(I couldn't get my post to appear under the quote, so here is my reply to the above quote)
Red, I share that desire to understand aspects of this individual which will forever elude us. For me, I don't especially care to understand what made him the monster we all know too well. Rather I wish to understand what drove him during his active period. He put such an astonishing amount of time and energy (not to mention the immense personal risk he assumed) into harming so many people. Sadism is a tendency that baffles me, but I understand on an intellectual level that a person may enjoy inflicting pain. I wish I understood what role his peculiar MO played in his sick, twisted fantasies. In particular, a seemingly necessary component to his crimes was the home itself. Many serial offenders have a preferred type of victim (JJD included), but Deangelo had a preferred type of residence he liked to attack. Some of this can be explained by convenience. Single story houses facilitated his extensive prowling and stalking methods. Tall fences helped conceal him. But there seems to be more to it than that. He peeped into houses that he never attacked; he called homes he never intended to attack. He seemed to want to dominate whole neighborhoods. Also, during the attacks he took extra time to become the master of the domain. Why cook and eat in the home? What was his purpose for such petty, domineering behavior? His MO was as strange as it was cruel, and I just can't understand why someone, sadist or no, would expend so much effort to commit crimes of such a deviant, peculiar nature. If anyone has any theories as to what JJD was trying to accomplish with his more bizarre behaviors, I would appreciate your insight. As we all know, JJD is a strange, twisted man, even when compared to other serial killers.
