I started reading Larry Compton's book online this morning. As it will probably takes some time for me to read through it, I will save my comments until I'm finished. I was a little rattled, however, when I noticed that EAR/ONS/GSK later struck in the Santa Clara community where my BIL and SIL live. It worried me because it would be so easy to hop over their back fence and enter through their always unlocked sliders into the first floor. My SIL also has the habit of walking her dog later at night in he dog park---assuming it's safe because it's generally well lit.

When we visited Santa Clara last year, it struck me that most people live in crowded high end row houses because a single family is so expensive. I would think those overcrouded conditions would make residents an easy target for rapists/killers. That and the fact that most residents of Santa Clara don't become acquainted with their row house attached neighbors, socializing mostly in sports and reading clubs.

I'm not sure whether or not to scare my SIL and BIL of he violent past history of their town. Most likely they would freak out.

I grew up in East Sacramento and I live here now. My family moved from Midtown Sac in Nov. 1975 around the time the EAR became active. I was 11 at the time. For the next couple of years EAR was THE thing in town. People were gripped with fear and started to put iron bars up on windows (my parents included). I recall nightly helicopter flights and wall to wall press coverage (which I'm sure he reveled in).

I lived out of state for 20 years, returning a few years ago. I've become reacquainted with the case through Michelle McNamara's LA Mag features. There's so much I didn't know as a kid. (fortunately, I think I would have been more scared than I was). I remember small details from some stories (e.g. stacking dishes on the men) but not others such as marking screens when he cased out locations and the targeted houses receiving hangup/crank calls. The biggest detail I mixed up as a kid is that I thought the rapes happened mostly in East Sacramento proper. It wasn't until I started reading McNamara's case history that I found out that the assaults occurred east of Howe Ave. A typical child's perspective; it was happening in my little world.

The big revelation was that he's also the GSK. I was living out of state when the DNA results indicated they are one and the same and missed the story entirely. I've been reading as much as can since. I haven't even lurked or read anything before registering. I found the link and here I am.

Thanks, portofleith. If I'd seen this map when it was published in the Bee I might have felt a bit of, um, relief isn't quite the word. Less fear, maybe. I live a straight shot west just on the other side of Sac State. I run errands and shop in the area and drive around there a bit. (Just the other day, I pulled into the Starbucks at 8200 Folsom and ordered a cheeseburger, but that's another story). I pass the Del Dayo school often. It's eerie to think that so many people experienced so much suffering around there...
