So sorry for you.  I'm sure it's a mind boggling thing to get your head around.  If any member of my family was a murderer I would want them caught and punished but it would still be a heart breaking situation and something very hard to come to terms with I'm sure.  Are you able to enlighten any of us as to what may have caused your brother to do this?  Was there any of the typical things they say about serial killers in his background?  Again,I am so sorry for you that are completely innocent and also have to suffer.

Thank you Sandia. Alex is the 3rd child of four children. I am the eldest of the four children. All four of us are military brats. Alex was born at Cherry Point MCAS, in NC. He was classified as a hyper active child, when he was about seven/eight years old. He was a handful, and since I was the eldest, I would have to watch him off and on. Lets just say that our mother was a bit hard on all of us kids. She was really hard on my brother, and he would get it more than the rest of us kids. Don't get my wrong, Alex could be an angel, but he was a handful, and I can tell you, that about the time I was seven years old, he was about three or four years old, and he killed a kitten right in front of me. From that moment, I knew there was something going on with my brother from that day on. We had to watch, that he would not abused our pets, or destroyed something of value of ours. Alex could be the sweetest child, but you realized that he was after something, and as we got older, we would take anything he said, or by his actions, with a grain of salt. Lots of stories from our childhoods, about Alex. I will not get into a lot of details. My brother could be good, but there was a rage under it all, and I and my sisters didn't know how to help him. You see other stories about people doing horrible things, and the excuses that are given by them, for the horrors that they did unto others. Then one of your own, goes and does the same stuff, and the other children, like my sister's and I, don't go off and do those things that he did. The crimes were so extreme, depraved and void of any humanity.  And raping a child ... the whole thing is unfathomable to me.  Did he ever suffer a brain injury or accident as a child?  Did he ever get any psychiatric help as a child?  How about at school, the teachers or councilors contact your parents regarding issues at school?  Did he ever try to sexually and/or physically assault a sibling, a neighbor?   Was there a turning point in his life?  Puberty?  High school?  Did he have any girlfriends?  Did he start abusing drugs or alcohol?  Have you tried to contact him or has he reached out to you or the rest of his family? 

Sorry to ask so many questions but you are presenting an opportunity to try to understand what happens to people to turn them into killers.

That animal killing thing at a young age seems to be the thing you hear the most that sets these guys apart from everyone else.  I have read that so many times.  What is also scary is that usually it is sort of unexplainable.

Alex's actions have nothing to do with his family members.  You all are just more victims left in his destructive wake.

Sandia, you are not asking too many questions. Yes the crimes were extreme, the murders, and the raping of the women, and the child. It is very unfathomable for I and my sisters, and it's so hard to try to wrap one's mind around the idea that a person can do such horrible things to another human. Alex did not suffer a brain injury or an accident as a child. He was consider a hyper-active child, and had been on Ritalin around 8 to 10 years of age. Ritalin, instead of calming him down, it seem to make him more active. Alex was a handful, during those times, and other times. Since I was the eldest, I would get to watch him, a lot of the times. As for school, he was in classes for hyper-active children during the early 70's. At the time we lived in the Sacramento area, and move here and there in North Highlands, Citrus Heights, and Orangevale areas. In his teens, he was on drugs, I'm not sure what drugs other than weed. I quit talking to him in the last 20 or so years. I used to let him call me, and we used to write to each other, but I'm at a point, and been at this point for the last few years, of not wanting to contact him. When he writes to me, in the last few years, I would get his letter, and may not open it for months, and then would finally open and read the letter. Very rarely, would I answer him. I felt bad for not responding to him, but I still care about him, just all that has been done, wears me out, and it is depressing.

mtf65, yes it seem to set my brother apart from the rest of children. I don't know if he was trying to get back at us other children, but he would abused our pets, and his pets. You had to watch him, when he was interacting with the animals. Our mother would be maniac, and then she would have times of being very depressed. When she would get angry, she may whip you, or pick up something, and beat the heck out of you. I think Alex might had been born damaged, and with the way our mother was, it may had made him worse.

Thank you so much for answering heddyfram.  I absolutely agree with almagata -- you are a victim too. I really hope you put absolutely no blame on yourself.  It's really heartbreaking what you have had to go through and still are going through. 

There is one case that always stays in my mind.  Glenn Edward Rogers.  He is on death row and I don't think he should be because of extenuating circumstances.  I would have given him life without parole because of the horrific abuse he suffered from his mother mainly and his father allowed it.  I would have put his parents in the jail cell with him.   He was very good looking.  He would hook up with red heads he met in bars.  These poor women were so smitten with him and he killed them.  Turns out his mother had red hair and was a bar fly.  So that was easy to see the cause and effect but your brother didn't seem to have that bad of a background.  

I just hope you can just go forward and have a good and happy life. You deserve it.

Sandia, let me tell you a story about my brother. I was staying at my parents, I was about 21 or 22 years old, and I was just out of the service. I was walking out of the back of the house, where most of bedrooms were located. While walking down the hallway, I heard my little brother, finish cursing at our mother. I came into the living room, and told my brother, that he would not speak to our mother, like he had just done. He told me where I could go, and he would do what he wanted. I punched him in the face. He swung on me, and I hit him again, and he went down. A little bit of information about my brother, he is slightly taller than I, he was in very good shape, and he was on some type of drug. After my brother went down, he jumped up and ran to our parent's room and grab my father's Winchester '94 rifle off of the rifle rack. The rifle is always loaded, and it was ready to go at a moment notice. Alex ran out of our parent's room, and was cocking the rifle, and bring it down to use on me. I stepped into between his arms and pulled the rifle out of his hands, and turned it around, and smack him in the face with the butt of the rifle. He went down again, got up and scream he would kill me. He ran out of the house. My brother never acted upon that threat, and while I was standing over him, emptying out the rifle, I was thinking was I going to have to kill him. I had never seen him like this before, and it worried me, that he would be so enraged. A couple of years later, my mother told me that about two weeks after that incident, Alex came to her, and apologize for his actions to her. I told my mother, that was good of him, and I was happy that he did tell her, he was sorry. Then my mother told me that Alex, said to her, "I never want to make Heather angry". That is the only time I had seen my brother, be so not himself.

I grew up in Concord, CA.

At the time of the rapes there we lived a very few blocks from both attack sites #37, #38. Additionally I had friends living in the El Divisadero neighborhood of the Walnut Creek attacks. So, needless to say I've been fascinated and horrified with the GSK story most of my life.

I was in high school at the time and I remember how afraid all the girls were (I suppose the boys too.)

From the crime blotters it appears that JJD was prowling my neighborhood and I have to wonder if he was responsible for several strange occurrences at my home. For example, fence boards disappearing from our backyard fence. Late night noises, etc. At the time we didn't think much of it, or report it to anyone. I imagine that for all the known suspicious activity, there must have been so many unreported incidents.

We always like hearing about people's personal experience related to the case.  If you think of any more details about the weird happenings around your home please share them if you feel comfortable.  It sounds like you probably had some EAR visits and you are fortunate not to have had a more serious encounter.  

Can you tell us the nearest street and cross street when these incidents were occurring so we know which neighborhood you lived in?

Greetings from Sydney, Australia. 

I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself - obviously not being a resident from the states, don't confess to know even a fraction of what you peeps would know about GSK, but none the less, have become a huge follower of this and try to read and learn everything I can. Really grateful to be given acess to this and looking forward to reading all of the amazing information you have all shared with everyone on here.
