The first BR attack takes place in Coronation Avenue in May 1991.
A woman is attacked at 2am, when she returns home unexpectedly early from her night shift work. She is feeling unwell so leaves work early.
She has just parked her car, when the BR attacks her. A noise disturbs him and so he bundles her into her own car, and drives her 5km to an isolated spot and rapes her.
He then drives the woman back to Bath in her own car, before escaping on foot. This becomes his MO in several of his other attacks.
This attack takes place around 2km from most of the other BR attacks. Is this a sign that the BR lived near to Coronation Avenue and was starting his spree close to home? Or did he have some connection to the first victim? David Mulcahy's first attempted rape victim was a pre-targeted victim - a woman who had annoyed him.
Why is the BR hanging around outside the house at 2am? Police think he is a burglar who launches an opportunistic attack when the victim appears, but I'm not so sure. Why does this burglar scope out a house with a male (the victim's husband) at home? Is he waiting for the man to go to sleep before entering the house? Is he watching a neighbouring house?
He has the knife and balaclava of the rapist, but why doesn't he have the torch, backpack and crowbar of the burglar?
Is he waiting for the victim to return home? I doubt it because she returns home hours ahead of schedule. Does he know her change of plan somehow and get home before she does? That could suggest a work connection. I'm guessing she was a nurse - I might be wrong but I doubt a middle class Bath woman would be working night shift in a factory.
Why doesn't the victim call her husband to tell him she is coming home early? Perhaps she thinks he will already be asleep and doesn't want to wake him. Perhaps she is in a hurry to get home and rest, or in the pre-mobile phone era just doesn't have access to a work or payphone.
If the BR is a burglar who just decides on the spur of the moment to become a rapist, then why do none of the subsequent attacks reflect this? If anything, the BR crimes show an offender who doesn't feel comfortable in the homes of other people. He's comfortable with cars, but IMO he's no seasoned burglar.
The BR goes on to attack many times, yet he never decides to try a home invasion attack. He isn't an offender like JJD or Waller who wants to spend hours with his victims. JMO but I think the 1991 BR is married or cohabiting and has a fairly tight schedule. I think he knows the local beauty spots because its where he has taken prostitutes in the past.
IMO he never begins home invasion crimes, because he's not a burglar. He doesn't get his buzz from being in other peoples' homes.
Attack #1 isn't reported to the police until at least 1995. The attack isn't reconstructed on Crimewatch until 2000. Once the 2000 programme is aired and the local investigation heats up, the Batman seems to stop offending.
Why don't the couple report the attack for at least four years?
People have their own reasons sometimes, which must be respected, and sadly a lot of rapes go unreported.
It seems strange to me though. The victim is abducted, carjacked and raped in an awful crime. The offender increases the torture by driving her home afterwards.
She must have been in real shock, pain and trauma when she is returned home. Yet she and her husband decide not to report this sickening crime.
