Police obtain search warrant in missing Iowa news anchor case

Former KIMT anchor Jodi Huisentruit disappeared June 27, 1995, and it is a day Kevin Hook remembers well.
“When I was younger, I lived by Harding Elementary School, and I would ride my bike to the park a lot,” Hook said. “My mom, for the longest time, would freak out and said I should never ride my bike near the apartments where she was abducted.”
The Mason City Police Department continues to follow up on leads in the case.

KIMT News 3 learned that within the past year, Mason City police requested a search warrant of two vehicles.
Those vehicles belong to Arthur “John” Vansice.

According to online court documents, police requested in March 2017 GPS data for a 1999 Honda Civic and 2013 GMC 1500, which is giving hope to Hook.
“Just being an open case for so long I, think it would be very good to know what happened, what her last hours, days, were like,” he said.
Mason City Police Chief Jeff Brinkley said he can't discuss why the two vehicles are important to the case or details about the search warrant.
“There’s investigative integrity that we are looking to preserve,” Brinkley said. “I’m not going to talk about the technology that we use to do this kind of stuff.”

But he does want the public to know they aren’t done searching.

“We are going to continue to use all of the resources at our disposal and the disposal of other agencies that we have been working with since day one,” Brinkley said. “I think at some point, someday, it will pay off and we will clear the case.”

Those are words of confidence that Hook is glad to hear.

“I think it’s good that we have a police department that is trying to cover the bases,” Hook said. “As a citizen, if it were me or my wife, I would want to know that every action possible is being taken even if it doesn’t yield any results, someone was trying to find out what happened.”

Police investigating a 52-year-old missing person cold case have found skeletal remains beneath a home in Long Island’s wine country.
The remains are believed to be those of Louise Pietrewicz, who was 38 in 1966 when she disappeared, leaving behind an 11-year-old daughter, The Suffolk Times reported.

Suffolk County homicide detectives on Monday dug up a burlap bag wrapped around the remains in the basement of a North Fork home that once belonged to Pietrewicz’s married boyfriend, the weekly paper reported. William Boken, a former Town of Southold cop, died in 1982. He was the prime suspect in Pietrewicz's disappearance.

“I was in shock,” Pietrewicz’s daughter Sandy Blampied told the paper after being told about the discovery. “It’s hard to believe. It hit home after 51 years.”

Boken’s ex-wife, Judith Terry, directed police to the basement of the home, where she said a body wrapped in burlap was buried soon after Pietrewicz’s family reported her missing, the paper reported.

“I said from the beginning Judy Boken Terry was the key,” Blampied said. "I said, ‘She knows.’ And she did.”
The Suffolk Times published a lengthy special section on the Cutchogue woman’s disappearance last October that prompted police to reopen the missing person case.

The basement had been searched and parts of it dug up in 2013 with no results, Suffolk police said Monday in a news release.
Detectives conducted the new search using ground penetrating sonar to guide them on where to dig.

“The remains were taken to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner to determine the identity and cause of death,” the news release said.
A Suffolk police spokeswoman said detectives would release more information on the case at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Police believe missing model’s body found in shallow grave

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police believe they have found the remains of a missing model and aspiring actress in a shallow grave 50 miles north of Sacramento, authorities said Tuesday.


LAPD detectives investigating the February disappearance of 25-year-old Adea Shabani were led to the banks of Dry Creek in the Spenceville Wildlife Area in Nevada County, where they discovered the remains.


Capt. William Hayes with the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division said at a Downtown Los Angeles news conference Tuesday that investigators believe the body belongs to Shabani but cannot say conclusively because of the condition of the remains.


He said investigators believe foul play might have occurred but are waiting for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Anthropologists from California State, Chico were also on site to help investigate the remains. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Hayes said investigators were treating the case as a homicide and suspect that 33-year-old Christopher Spotz, who had an “intimate relationship” with Shabani, was somehow involved in her disappearance.


Spotz shot and killed himself with a handgun Thursday, police say, after leading officers on a chase from Hesperia to Corona in a stolen Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.


KNBC-TV, citing anonymous law enforcement sources, reported that the dead man was Shabani’s boyfriend.

LAPD spokeswoman Rosario Herrera said Shabani had last been seen in the Tacoma.


Shabani, who friends said had come to L.A. less than two years ago to pursue a career in modeling, was last seen near her home in Hollywood on Feb. 23.

Shabani graduated from high school in Skopje, Macedonia, in 2010 and from the American University in Paris in 2014, according to her Facebook profile. Her family has offered a $25,000 reward for information that might help find her.


Shabani, a student at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting in Hollywood, was set to graduate in September, said Jayden Brant, a private investigator hired by Shabani’s family.


Shabani was 25 years old when she went missing. Her 26th birthday was March 16.

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man tied up two teenagers, stabbed them to death and dumped their bodies in an abandoned mine shaft before they were reported missing nearly three months ago, police said Thursday.


Jerrod W. Baum, 41, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, kidnapping, abuse of a dead body and other charges Wednesday, hours after police recovered the bodies on a shallow ledge inside a deep mine shaft near Eureka, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.


Baum caught the two teenagers after they visited his girlfriend at their home, then bound them in their Jeep and drove to an abandoned mine where he killed them, the woman told investigators. He said he'd already warned her about having male friends at the house and "it was too bad because he has never killed an innocent before," she told authorities, according to police documents.


He told her he'd made Riley Powell, 18, suffer but kept the death of Brelynne "Breezy" Otteson, 17, quick and painless because he felt bad, Utah County Sheriff's officials wrote.


Defense attorney Michael Petro did not immediately return a message seeking comment.


Family members of the two teenagers said they didn't know Baum, and were at a tragic loss to explain what happened.

"What went wrong? Why did he have so much hate? There's no reason," father Bill Powell told reporters.

"You don't kill kids out of jealousy," Otteson's aunt Amanda Hunt said, she added that finding their bodies after nearly three months of searching puts at least some questions to rest.


Bodies believed to be Powell and Otteson were recovered after police found a Facebook message thread showing the teens planned on going to the couple's home on Dec. 29, shortly before they were reported missing, according to police documents.


Baum's girlfriend Morgan Henderson, 34, told police in January that the teens had come over, smoked marijuana with her and left, and that she hadn't seen them since. But after police found an axe, a rifle and knives in her car in an unrelated traffic stop on Sunday, she talked to investigators again.


The couple had come to the house, but after they left Baum came to find Henderson and showed her the teens were tied up in Powell's Jeep. He put her in the car to "go for a ride and have a talk," and took them all out to an abandoned mine site. He killed the teenagers, then took her back home and threatened her as well, police said.


Henderson dumped the Jeep at a nearby reservoir, she told police. A lawyer listed for her in a previous case did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Additional arrests in the case are possible, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said, though he did not elaborate.

Court records show Baum has a rap sheet dating back to the early 1990s including theft, assault and weapons charges.


Last year, Baum and Henderson were found in a car near Yuba State Park with a tactical knife tucked in the small of his back and another knife on a necklace under his shirt, along with a container of meth, a pistol and prescription drugs, according to court records. He was convicted of weapon and drug charges in that case.


Baum was also accused of helping his girlfriend load and stash a handgun in their home earlier this year, despite being barred from possessing a gun as a convicted felon. He has not yet entered a plea in that case.

A woman found strangled to death in Ohio back in the 1980s has been identified thanks to new technology.
Investigators in Miami County, just north of Dayton, announced Wednesday that they have made a positive ID on a woman found slain there nearly 40 years ago.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office said an unidentified woman who became known as Buckskin Doe because of the coat she had been wearing was found dead on Greenlee Road on April 24, 1981.

They said she died by strangulation and blunt force trauma.
Officials said they worked with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on the case, who created a facial reconstruction in 2016 of what she may have looked like.

This week, investigators identified her as Marcia L. King, who was 21 at the time of her death. They said she was from Arkansas, but may have had ties to Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania shortly before her murder.

Now that she had been identified, the Sheriff's Office said it will move forward with a homicide investigation.

The Colonial Parkway Murders were the slayings of at least eight people apparently by a serial killer along the Colonial Parkway of the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia (or nearby) between 1986 and 1989. During that time, three couples were murdered and one couple is missing and presumed to be dead. The killer has not been identified.


First couple

The first two known victims were United States Naval Academy Class of 1981 graduate Cathleen Thomas, 27, and College of William & Mary senior Rebecca Ann Dowski, 21. On October 12, 1986, Columbus Day weekend, their bodies were found inside Thomas' white 1980 Honda Civic at the Cheatham Annex Overlook along the Colonial Parkway in Williamsburg, Virginia. An autopsy found rope burns on their necks and wrists, signs of strangulation, their throats had been slashed, and diesel fuel was poured over the bodies and the car but the car failed to ignite. Their purses and money were found inside the car. It appears that Thomas may have struggled with her attacker as a clump of hair was later found between her fingers. Both women were fully clothed and there was no evidence of robbery or sexual assault. It was considered a murder.



Second couple

On September 20, 1987, David Knobling, 20, and Robin Edwards, 14, were shot to death in the Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge, on the south shore of the James River in Isle of Wight County, near Smithfield, Virginia. Knobling's black Ford Ranger pickup truck was found at the refuge parking area next to the James River Bridge with the wipers and radio on and some articles of clothing inside. Three days later, the two bodies were discovered by Knobling's father and a search party along the water's edge of the James River.



Third couple

On April 10, 1988, Christopher Newport University students Cassandra Lee Hailey, 18, and Richard Keith Call, 20, were reported missing after attending a party in the University Square area in Newport News during their first date together. Call's red 1982 Toyota Celica was found, unoccupied, at the York River Overlook on the Colonial Parkway the next day with some articles of clothing inside. Their bodies have never been found but both are presumed dead.



Fourth couple

On September 5, 1989, just after Labor Day weekend, Annamaria Phelps, 18, and Daniel Lauer, 21, vanished while en route to Virginia Beach. Phelps had been dating Lauer's brother at the time they went missing. Lauer's car, a gold 1972 Chevrolet Nova, was soon found abandoned at the I-64 New Kent rest stop in New Kent County and it was discovered to have been heading in the wrong direction, away from their intended Virginia Beach destination. On October 19, 1989, the skeletonized bodies of Phelps and Lauer were found in a wooded area by hunters along Interstate 64 between Williamsburg and Richmond. The hunters discovered the bodies on a logging road about a quarter-of-a-mile from Courthouse Road, a location about a mile from the I-64 New Kent rest stop where Lauer's car was found. At least one of the badly decomposed bodies appears to have suffered knife wounds.

I have relatives in western Wisconsin, and I visited them just a week after she vanished. The TV stations they picked up there (one was from La Crosse) were airing ads describing her and asking people to call in if anyone had seen her. It was spooky.

DNA leads to arrest in 1986 cold case slayings of two young women

FREMONT, Calif. -- The 1986 killings of two California women who disappeared after attending a birthday party were committed by a man convicted in an unrelated murder three years later, according to DNA evidence linking the suspect to the crimes, authorities said Monday. At the time, the murders sent a panic through the Bay Area city of Fremont-- and despite a $35,000 reward, the case went nowhere, reports CBS San Francisco.

The Fremont Police Department announced they arrested David Misch, 57, on suspicion of two counts of murder in the slayings of two young women whose nude bodies were dumped along a road, the East Bay Times reported. Fremont is southeast of San Francisco.

Misch was charged last week with two counts of murder in the shooting and stabbing deaths of Michelle Xavier, 18, and Jennifer Duey, 20. Information on his defense attorney was not immediately available.

The women had attended a birthday dinner and were last seen together later that evening at a convenience store.

After their bodies were discovered, Xavier's car was located parked six miles from the crime scene in the parking lot of a shopping center but investigators never found their personal belongings, including purses and identification.

"The deaths of the two women were highly publicized and left many in the community shaken and fearful in their own neighborhoods," police said in a statement Monday.

Officials say investigators re-examined the files and evidence in recent years and DNA test results identified Misch as the main suspect. According to a statement released by the Fremont Police Department Monday, "Misch lived in the area at the time and was a known commercial burglar and drug user."

Police do not believe he had any prior history or contact with the two women.

Misch is serving 18 years to life for an unrelated homicide in 1989.

The women's families issued a statement thanking the Fremont Police Department. "We have been in constant contact with them, so we know how deeply they care and how hard they work," they said.

In 2016, the Fremont Police Department created a position within their Crimes Against Persons Unit to focus on cold case homicides and missing persons, according to the department statement. The 36-year old double murder "became a top priority for the detective in this new role."
"The department is grateful to be able to provide this level of closure and consolation to the victims and our community. Generations of investigators have carried this case and the interest of the families has never faded from their priority over time," said Chief Richard Lucero.

Disappearance of two Okla. girls stumped police for 18 years. Then they learned about the Polaroids.

The accused killers kept the Polaroid photos as trophies, witnesses would later tell investigators. The frozen moments were reminders of what they had done — and useful threats to anyone who was thinking about talking.

There were rumored to be about a dozen pictures, secreted away in a soft leather briefcase. In some images, the two missing 16-year-old girls were bound and gagged, thrown together on a bed, facing one another. Others showed the teens duct-taped to chairs. Although law enforcement in Oklahoma never discovered the photos, the lost images were burned into the memory of enough witnesses to serve as vital clues to unlocking a horrific cold case that had stumped investigators for 18 years.

On Dec. 30, 1999, Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible vanished from the scene of a double murder and arson in rural Oklahoma, sparking a hunt stretching to Mexico and Canada.

After years of false starts and small gains, on Monday investigators announced they had finally identified three men in connection with the abduction and death of Freeman and Bible: Warren “Phil” Welch, David Pennington, and Ronnie Busick.

Both Welch and Pennington are dead. Busick was arrested on Sunday in Wichita. On Wednesday, the cane-using 66-year-old was returned to Craig County to face four murder counts. He has not filed a plea and no lawyer was listed for him. In interviews with police before his arrest, Busick denied any part in the crimes.

The 33-page arrest affidavit released by the Craig County prosecutors lays out how whispers about the Polaroids, a missing insurance card and a newly discovered box of evidence reignited a stalled case. The document provides the first detailed account of how the teens allegedly fell down a black hole of backcountry meth dealers and violent misogynists who leveraged fear to keep their crime hidden for nearly two decades.

But a key question remains unanswered: The girls’ final resting place is still unknown.

“At this time all focus is on finding Lauria and Ashley,” Bible’s family wrote on Facebook this week. “We welcome all information leading to their recovery. Until they are home with us, this will never be over.”

It started when a birthday party went horribly wrong, authorities say.

Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible were best friends living in Craig County, a rural area in Oklahoma’s northeast corner. Freeman was a basketball player; Bible a cheerleader. They had been close since kindergarten.

“Lauria and Ashley would call each other at least once a week,” Bible’s mother Lorene would later tell “Unsolved Mysteries.” “What one was thinking, the other was thinking. It’s kind of like when two people — one can finish the sentence when the other one starts one.”

Ashley turned 16 on Dec. 29, 1999 and to mark the occasion, Lauria asked her parents if she could spend the night at the Freeman mobile home.
“Lauria, she said to me, ‘Daddy, is it all right if I spend the night with Ashley in the Freemans’ home?’ ” her father recalled to “Unsolved Mysteries.” “I said, ‘Well, just make sure you’re home by noon tomorrow.’ And, noon tomorrow didn’t happen the way it should’ve.”

By the next morning — Dec. 30, 1999 — firefighters were rushing to the home. When they pulled up around 5:30 a.m., the couple’s trailer was swallowed whole by flames. Investigators would later determine the blaze was arson. Ashley’s mother, Kathy Freeman, was found inside the smoking ruin near the couple’s water bed. The back of her head had been blasted away with a shotgun.

Still missing, however, were her husband, her daughter Ashley, and Lauria Bible.

According to the Tulsa World, it was originally thought that perhaps Danny Freeman had killed his wife and fled with the teenagers. But on the day after the fire, Bible’s parents walked through the crime scene looking for clues to their daughter’s disappearance. The couple noticed Danny Freeman’s Rottweiler loyally sitting near a charred piece of debris. A closer look showed it was the badly torched body of Ashley’s father. He also had been gunned down.

But the two 16-year-old girls were still missing.

The frantic days after the disappearance produced no sign of the girls.

Searches of a nearby lake, mine shaft and water-filled quarry were fruitless, Tulsa World reported. As the years piled up, promising leads burned out into hoaxes. At least two convicted killers — Tommy Lee Sells and Jeremy Jones — confessed to the crime, but later recanted.

The missing girls were featured on national television programs such as “Unsolved Mysteries” and “Vanished: With Beth Holloway.” The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released age-progressed photos of the girls.

The Bibles refused to take apart their Christmas tree after Lauria went missing, hoping one day she would return home and the family could pull down the holiday decorations together. In 2006, the tree fell apart.

But according to the recently released court documents, in the world of prairie meth cookers and users, among lives bouncing between homes and violent relationships and jail stints, there was little question about what had happened to the girls. That was because so many people had seen the Polaroids.

Phil Welch was allegedly a Bible hymn-singing “meth cooker,” according to witnesses who have recently spoken to police, a man also described by others as “evil” but given to breaking into unhinged “preaching rants.” Pennington was a “king pin,” another witness told investigators. Both had previous criminal records before the December 1999 incident.

In the scenario alleged by prosecutors, Welch, Pennington and Busick came to the Freeman trailer to settle a “bad drug deal.” Witnesses told police that after killing the couple, the three suspects decided to “take the girls and have fun with them,” according to the affidavit.

Another individual told police the girls were held for a “matter of days” at Welch’s trailer and were “raped and violently strangled to die.” The men allegedly said “if they wouldn’t have taken off running . . . they would still be alive.” The bodies, police allege, were “thrown in a pit.”

A former girlfriend of Welch’s told investigators that when she lived with him in the months after the murders and disappearance, the alleged meth cooker actually decorated the walls of his trailer with the missing posters promising $50,000 for information about the girls.
Then there were the Polaroids.

The girlfriend told police she discovered them after Welch was jailed for beating her a few months after the Freeman murders. Welch kept the photos in a leather briefcase, she told police. She “was certain the girls in the Polaroids were the same two girls identified in the reward poster,” according to the affidavit. The photos showed the girls bound and gagged and lying on a bed. According to the police affidavit, Welch’s girlfriend “reported she recognized the bed as being the one that was in her and Welch’s bedroom.”

The girlfriend threw the photos in the trunk of an abandoned car at the trailer, then fled to a friend’s house. When Welch got out of jail, he phoned the girlfriend, demanding to know where the Polaroids were. He told her he knew she had seen them. “Don’t you ever tell anybody or you will end up in a pit . . . like those two girls,” he allegedly threatened.

Another witness told police Welch and Pennington had tried to show him the pictures years after the crime, shoving them in his face: “Here, look,” he said. They acted as if they were “proud” of the images. A different individual described walking in on the three men looking at the photos together, which they quickly covered up when the witness entered the room.

One of the keys to pushing the case toward actual arrests arrived in February 2017. Craig County Sheriff Office discovered a box of documents related to the investigation, which was handed over to the current team pulling at leads. The box pointed investigators to new witnesses, many of whom told investigators about a pair of private detectives who had worked the case in the early days.

The investigators eventually tracked down one of these detectives, Tom Pryor, who unfortunately no longer had his files on the case. He did, however, have one item: an insurance card found at the scene on the day after the Freemans were killed. The card belonged to a woman who happened to be living then with Welch. He often drove her car. The insurance card put Welch at the crime scene.

“The man charged with murder and the other two men mentioned but now deceased were all names we have had for years from tips received,” the Bible family wrote this week on Facebook. “The Polaroids mentioned, we’ve known about for years. None of this information was new to us, although seeing it on paper made it real for us. ”
