I can see both sides to the quote above. First, these are not trails. This is a creek with some associated tributaries. I don't think anyone rides the creek, although there are some bike paths that run close to the creek in areas, but these are not the areas near the crime scenes. But second, this creek is quite prominent in this neighborhood and it is clearly in evidence to anyone who resides here or to those who visit. Bear in mind however, this is a very residential area, nobody really hangs out here who doesn't live here. I grew up in this neighborhood and was well aware of the creek, but I never traveled more than ten or twenty yards up or down the creek and that was only to look for frogs. It would take someone quite a bit more intrepid than myself to negotiate all the natural foliage, rocks, and water in the creek bed.
Glasby's first house in Goleta was at the intersection of Kellogg Ave and Pembroke Lane. The house is between a tenth and two tenths of a mile from San Jose Creek. As I have said, he and his crew would hang out at the Berkeley footbridge frequently and made it a scary place for neighborhood kids to visit or cross. (Parenthetically, the footbridge on Berkeley that crosses San Jose Creek is a very prominent neighborhood landmark. Berkeley Rd is the main east-west thoroughfare south of Cathedral Oaks and north of Calle Real. It has always been a source of frustration, since I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, that Berkeley Rd is divided by this foot bridge and so cars can't pass through. Ironically, to visit my friends on the other side of the footbridge, but still on Berkeley Rd, a distance of only three blocks, often necessitated a car journey that leads through Avenida Pequena--that's why I did, and still do, travel that road so frequently. (Anyone who travels by foot or bike, must go over the footbridge--or else travel around at a significantly increased distance.) The footbridge was only three tenths of a mile away from Glasby's house. (And the Toltec Way crime scene was only half a mile away and the Avenida Pequena site was only about six-tenths of a mile away. Of course he didn't live in this house when these crimes occurred, but I feel he traveled these areas frequently.)ย
The part of the Glasby situation that makes me think he could have had something to do with these crimes is the fact that when his parents moved to Camino Rio Verde
he again had direct access to the San Jose Creek. This residence is not nearly as close to San Jose Creek itself as his first house, but he was close to a tributary of it. The housing subdivision where Camino Rio Verde lies is in an upscale part of Goleta. It is in the foothills and is characterized by large houses, large lots, and no sidewalks. His house also abutted a green belt. To access San Jose Creek from this new house he could walk half a mile down his street to North Patterson, or he could navigate the green belt (without being seen except for the last few hundred feet) to the same place. Once he was at approximately 1107 North Patterson, he could enter the tributary creek that leads to San Jose Creek. This is definitely not on maps. The Queen Ann crime scene is the closest to the Camino Rio Verde house and would seem a likely first target due to its remoteness from the street and access from the creek. The other two are farther down San Jose Creek, but getting closer to his original Goleta home and the footbridge--and very familiar territory.
Again, I'm a neophyte at both this conversation and these crimes. I know very little, but am contributing the little bit that I have direct knowledge of. I respect the evidence that suggests that he can't be the killer because of the DNA.
I concur with what Brad said! ๐
