I think it likely that there was an external event that was either an aggravating factor or acted as a stressor because of the fact that he most likely moved. The external event could be anything; loss of job, old lady kicked him out, his mom kicked him out, he failed out of school, etc...
I think the other likely scenario is that he was being questioned, possibly being looked at more closely and he split. Just left town. Or he was told to leave town. Maybe something happened during his last EAR attack that seemed like a glaring mistake that would identify to him but waa overlooked by investigators. He thought He was recognized. Who knows.
My thinking is that the circumstances of the transition were not organic. Something had to have happened to in the very least, nudge him along a Southern trajectory.
Being the mid 1970s, I think EAR likely wore his hair on the longer side as opposed to shorter military side. In fact, the earliest EAR sketches show guys for the most part with longer hair styles. I think EAR may have cut his hair short to look less like those longer hair sketches, resulting in what we see in the Maggiore sketch. Once that amended sketch was released, EAR stuck out since he didn't have the longer hair like most people did, thus the need to escape the area. As far as my Suspect goes, his early 1970s photo looked identical to the Maggiore Sketch, same hairline, same part, same spot, same facial features, etc. At the same time, pics of him with long hair from the mid 70's match the long hair sketches of EAR. My Guy left the area and headed to Orange County. If my guy turns out to be EAR,reverting back to that less common short hair cut that looks identical to the Maggiore sketch will be his downfall
What date was the amended sketch released and which paper(s) was it in? I can find the article but it never mentions the date. If you know the date and paper. I figured you would.
