Richard Prior was a heroin addict from Bath, who died in Weymouth from a drug overdose in October 2000. Thanks again to ttk for the original research.
In September 2000, Prior is arrested by the Operation Eagle team, for a 1994 abduction rape in Bath. He gets bail, moves to Weymouth and within a few weeks he is dead.
He is in Bath and is using a very similar MO to the Batman - before the series is linked or publicised.
Prior is a former motor mechanic. The Batman is comfortable driving all sorts of cars.
Prior dies in late 2000. The Batman series ends.
In 1999, Prior is part of a drug crew in Bath. Several people attempt to retrieve the Batman cap in Bath in 1999.
Prior is 30 years old in 1994. The witnesses in 1994 describe the Batman as 28-32 years old.
Prior lived in the BA1 area, which was the area targeted by the police for leaflet drops. He may not have been on any electoral registers, which might have allowed him to avoid the initial investigation.
Prior may be linked to Bath University through heroin dealing. Two of the Batman attacks take at Bath University. In September 2000, DCI James announced police will be targeting areas surrounding the university. It seems that a few days later Prior is arrested for historical rape.
The issue regarding Prior may (as usual in this case) be DNA related. The police have his DNA from his arrest for rape. They may also have a DNA sample from his death (although in this era, samples sometimes weren't taken due to fears over HIV risks).
If the DNA matches the DNA from the cap, then the case would be declared solved, right? Although DCI James does say in September 2000 that the sample may only be 'linked to' the offender.
