I'm turning on the bat signal because I've seen how badly these kinds of amateur sleuthing projects can go when the momentum gets out of hand.

I was part of the Reddit contingent that tried to find the Boston Bomber back in 2013 and I am now deeply embarrassed by what happened there. I was SURE that this innocent person I saw in those crowd pics was the bomber. Other Redditors started harassing innocent people because they speculated that some rando in a crowd pic was a murdering terrorist. The families of innocent people were harassed. There's a guy in the EARONS community, Dexter, who harassed innocent people he assumed were EAR. I'm just very wary of how these kinds of missions go once they've been goosed with some adrenaline. People are likely to harass and stalk some innocent person because some internet sleuths got a wild hare up their asses that they just found DB friggin' Cooper. "DB Cooper wore a suit....and THIS GUY wears a suit! They must be the same person!"

So many people have been accused of being EAR. All the pieces seemed to fit. They lived in the right places, they were the right age, they resembled a composite, etc. NONE of them turned out to be right.

Like I said above, a week or two before JJD was arrested, many good people on here were SURE that EAR was some lowly dude who worked for a glass company - based on the flimsiest of criteria. "he MIGHT have worked with glass...therefore this guy who works for a local glass company and is over 50 MUST be him!" It's fine to speculate, but it can go haywire sometimes.

This case is solved. JJD is in custody. How can anything go awry if CBK was actually some innocent guy out there? He might get a funny post out of this someday, a la Manzanita. CBK? Oh, that stands for Certified Butterfly Keeper. Haven't posted for awhile 'cause I was busy volunteering for Entomologists Without Borders.

The time to stand athwart of sleuthing yelling stop! was a few months ago, back when POI's were being developed out of thin air.

MJP brought up the Verla Street composite back in March: thread link.

Here is a side-by-side view. There should have been more composites like this in my opinion. Hard to say why not. The unreliability of eyewitnesses? DeAngelo disguising his appearance? Even factoring in both possibilities, it seems like more composites should have had the face closer to reality.

You can also set you online status to invisible. So that possibility is in the mix.

Or you could be right and CBK was indeed JJD. If so, he had to have multiple accounts, don't you think? There have been a lot of infrequent posters with styles similar to Trig, Trigger, and CBK. It's very generic.

That feels like a trick question. Facts are primary, but who cares whether they came first or second in your thinking process? If you, say, generate a good idea for an avenue of investigation, that favorable result is what matters. Either (1) start with the facts and base your assumptions on those facts, or (2) start with a few assumptions and later vet them with the facts. Either approach seems fine to me.

Assumptions... conjecture... speculation... They can make a great initial step for problem solving. Then again, how do we not start with the facts when we learn about a problem in the first place?

In February of '78 Joseph DeAneglo was 29. He had gone from being the Exeter Ransacker to the Visalia Ransacker to the East Area Rapist, completely outsmarting the police along the way. From what we know, he had compiled at least 30 victims of rape or attempted rape, at least one victim of murder, and well over a hundred home break-ins and burglaries. The actual numbers are likely much higher.

So here's twenty-one year old Brian Maggiore, all 5'-7'' of him, attempting to confront DeAngelo. Twenty year old Katie possibly says something as well. To tick him off even more, they have one of those little yappy dogs which he loathes. Outraged over what he views as their impudence he decides to teach them a fatal lesson. As in, who do you think you are to be bothering me?

The driving motive? Not a possible identification. It's DeAngelo taking an immediate and intense dislike to the young couple. Otherwise it went down like you described.

Just something I've been thinking about lately.

We always wondered, how did the EAR avoid getting pulled over after an attack? That was assuming he was driving a vehicle which now seems like a given. Well, maybe JJD did in fact get pulled over a couple of times. Is that you, Joe? What are you doing over here in Sac?

He has a handy excuse ready and no field interview ever gets written. He's a fellow cop, after all. More of a theoretical possibility than a prediction.

Regular ol' Joe? This guy was an active duty cop in Exeter and Auburn for crying out loud. Not only was he the ONS and the EAR and the VR, it appears he was the Exeter Ransacker before that as well. DeAngelo now looks like a good possibility for even more murders and other types of crimes that had completely different MO's. Regualr ol' Joe? This guy may have been as bad as some of our worst fears. I can't see how anybody could be let down. More like bewildered by his prolificacy.

A future book should list some of the best POI's. Names not necessary -- merely the boxes they checked off so excellently well. Nothing could make the point better. Investigate a case long enough and you'll find a few, but none may be the right guy.

As I've said before, this puts a great perspective on other cold cases. Bill James and his daughter (Rachel McCarthy James) may not have found the Villisca axe murderer. Larry Harnish may not have identified the killer of Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia. James Jessen Badal may not have nabbed the Cleveland Torso Murderer. What they all found were strong POI's. Impressive, but not definitive. Those of us here on this message board know not to get too excited, no matter how convincing a circumstantial case may appear to be.

Yes, there were a few indications. That's why we have multiple threads that discuss the possibility. My point is that we might expect more reports of this type if he did it all the time. Maybe he did and was simply very good at it. Hard to say, but there was no slam dunk consensus before April 25th that he was an inveterate wig-wearer who relied on fake hair to stay incognito.
