I have posted the below information on the AETV site before, but now we have a new board, I think that it is right that the British serial rapist Delroy Grant, who seemed to have many similarities with EAR/ONS, has a thread devoted to him, if you will pardon that turn of phrase:
There was a rapist in England whose modus operandi bore striking similarities with EAR/ONS. He was also known as 'The Night Stalker', but to the police he was known as 'Minstead Man' after the police 'Operation Minstead' which was set up to catch him.
Minstead Man was a voyeur and an accomplished cat burglar. He was also a prowler who put his victims under surveillance. His planning was so meticulous that in several hundred offences he was never known to have broken into the home of someone who was not there alone.
He also had a preferred building type, always targeting houses but never flats. He was known to remove whole window panes in order to gain entry, and make use of tools found around the property. Once inside he would rip out telephone wires and cut off the electricity, then wake his victims in bed by shining a flashlight in their eyes.
He would often stay in the house for a few hours as well. He targeted particular areas of South London, and once hit three houses in the same street. Although his known crimes occurred between 1990 and 2009, he also stopped offending for long periods. He had a break between 1992 and 1997, from 1999 to 2002 and then another for some time after 2003.
He would strike most often in the early hours of Friday or Saturday mornings, and was of average height or a little taller, with a slim, athletic build. He wore a balaclava and gloves as well. His footprints were found in the gardens of houses he hit, and as he didn't wear condoms, police had his DNA.
Now before anyone gets too excited, thinking that Minstead Man might be EAR/ONS, he isn't. Obvious differences are that he was black guy from London, he never killed anyone, and his victims were mainly elderly women, but also a few elderly men. He was a gerontophile (someone with a sexual interest in the elderly), and was caught by a huge police operation while still actively committing offences in 2009, and identified as Delroy Grant.
It has been speculated in the British media that the police missed two opportunities to have caught him many years before. According to the media, one time the police showed up at his house, he wasn't in, and they never bothered following it up. Another time, someone put his name forward, the police obtained DNA from someone who shared the same name, DNA which obviously cleared that man, and as such they eliminated the name 'Delroy Grant' from their enquiries.
Like with EAR/ONS, there was a criminal profile in which all sorts of suggestions were made about the offender, some of which turned out to be true and some that didn't. Once identified, one thing that was interesting was that he had worked as a decorator in the past, where he quite possibly picked up the DIY skills required to be doing such things as removing windows etc. Another occupation of his was working as a minicab driver, therefore having a good excuse to be out in his car late at night, without anyone being too suspicious of his movements.
