I'm hoping the many much deeper experts on the case that frequent these boards can add to this list of known circumstantial evidence linking VR to EAR/ONS (or, potentially just as constructively, dispute those connections.) I want very much to fully buy into the connection as Visalia provides such a useful starting point and filter on the suspect list, but I'm somewhat bothered by the thinness of this soup. Yet I know many in LE and among civilian investigators believe the connection, and I suspect some posters can offer pretty compelling additions. [As a sidenote, I think it's just as important to close the VR murders as the EAR/ONS, even if they are not connected.]
Please offer additions if you have them:
1) Timeline - The ransackings end, seemingly forever, six months prior to the beginning of the EAR attacks.
2) Volume - The prolific nature of both sprees suggest a few links:
a) Elusiveness - I would estimate the likelihood of capture during a 20 month spree of ~80 - >100 home break-ins within a concentrated middle-to-upper-class zone to be roughly 100%, yet here we are websleuthing 40 years later. So too with EAR.
b) Motivation - The rate of VR crimes implies an addiction that would be hard to break even after the McGowen shooting. Relocation and a resumption of crimes is more likely than retirement.
c) Brazenness
3) Motive - Sexual predation; no financial incentive.
4) Pattern. In a couple respects:
a) Summer breaks through from Visalia through Sacramento, and weekend preference from Visalia through early EAR.
b) Escalation - VR makes sense as a precursor to EAR.
5) General MO -
a) Night entry
b) Firearm proficiency
c) Rifling through belongings
d) Phone harassment
6) Specific MO - Dishes - In Visalia, placed by the door to alert of suprise arrivals; for EAR, we know the story.
7) Back of the 1978 Danville map - Some see "Snelling" or "Come from Snelling."
8) Witness descriptions? - Apparently, Det. McGowen found some witness descriptions of the EAR to match his own recollections. I'm not sure though how good of a look he got at the VR that night. Also, the VR sketches I have seen bear no resemblance to any of the EAR/ONS sketches.
