New Theory....go with it....Vietnam Vet and a Sac Cop who left the force when the Sac Rapes Stopped

I have followed this case on and off for a long time and have been on this board all night. I find it endlessly facisnating and disturbing. Let me introduce myslef by saying I retired from the military last June after 20 years and I am a veteran of the Iraq war. Alot people have put forth that EAR was military or LE. I have insight into that psychology having been in the Military and having worked with alot of Cops when I supported reservists for three years.

I am going to attempt to thread togehter some of clues, posit some new one, offer some new psychological theories (and refine some of the others) and hpoefully add something to the profile that I have not yet seen on this board.

First off the one theory or profile nobody has put forth was that this guy was a Vietnam Vet, and possibly a very disturbed one at that. Think about it: His age is estimated to be 26-30 at the time EAR. That has him graduating from High School in the Late 60's, which in turn has him getting drafted to go to Vietnam, which would have exposed him to some very bad stuff which could have affected him. We'll come back to this.

I think the whole micropenis clue has been severly under examined. That would explain his rage towards women. He seems like he was an intelligent and possibly attractive man, who would be able to initially attract potential girlfriends, but who probably rejected him once their relationship became sexual because of his short, thin penis. This would certainly explain his rage towards women and his desire to emotionally castrate men as he probably felt somewhat like a Eunuch himself. Unless he married a deeply religious women (which is entirely possible as did BTK) who viewed sex as something for procreation only, an excessively small penis would be an issue for most women. As a result of his inability to maintain a relationship or sexually satisfy a women, he probably turned to prostitutes, which in turn escalted as he became consumed with rage over his rejection from the type of women he truly desired. Rape was a means to "have" those women.

Let's not also forget that if he was probably in the military. Communal showers with 50-100 men, especially at boot camp, would have made him painfully aware of this underendowment and, especially back then, he may have had to endure ridicule.

Let's get to the Bottom Line: He was a Cop. PERIOD. Why was able to keep such odd hours? BECAUSE HE WAS ON PATROL LOOKING FOR THE EAR. How was he able to blend in? HE WAS COP SO NO ONE WOULD EVER SUSPECT HIM. As a cop he could stalk neighboorhoods and people would barely notice, if anything they would feel safer when they saw him or his cruiser. This would also explain how he knew the geography so well. The German Shepard? THOSE ARE POLICE WORKING DOGS. THE GUY WAS PROBABLY A DOG HANDLER. Also, the way he would initially control couples when he blitzed them and cleaned up the crime scene is indicative of someone with LE training (I know this has been explored before.

In the early 90's there was a serial rapist in San Diego who was a cop. He eluded capture for so long for that very reason. He was part of the daily briefings on his crimes and had inside info on the investigation. He could be out at odd hours on patrol. He used LE techniques to control couples when he confronted them. He even used the same MO as EAR which was to attack couples, tie up the man, and rape the women in earshot, except he committed his crimes on the beach. He was eventually caught because he attacked two cops posing as a couple in the area where the rapes occured and he got shot. This guy was married and had kids.

So here is the guy we are looking for: A Vietnam Vet who joined the Sacremento PD in the 74-76 timeframe. He also probably worked with Police Dogs at some point. Here is the key clue however that will allow us find him pretty easily: He didnt just "leave" or "move" from Sacremento when things got too hot: HE TRANSFERED TO ANOTHER PD NEAR WHERE THE ONS MURDERS OCCURED.

So here is our guy: Vietnam Vet (probably from Sacremento and drafted from there); Dog Handler; Sacremento PD 74-79; Orange County PD 79-until mid 90's when he retired. I'm thinking that someone with the resources to hire a private detective could could go through the public records in Sacremento and find out which cops transfered out of the dept to another PD in Orange County or near the ONS murders in 1979. That name is out there..........

Let me posit one more theory: CHiPS. That would also explain how he was able to move around CA so much, remain above suspicion and hone his craft. Although he probably started out at the SAC PD before he was accepted to the Highway Patrol. Maybe that's why he left in 1979. For no other reason than that's when he was accepted to the Highway Patrol. Either way, that name is out there also.......I bet he was a dog handler too....that should help narrow down ther search.

I'll add one more thing: It may sound like I'm bashing cops and Vets. I'm not (or at least not trying too). I am Vet and have worked with many Cops. 99% are fine men and women. One poster asked if he was a paranoid schizo and I think most posters debuked that. He was way too "good" at whathe did to be that disorganized. He did clearly however fall along the narcissitic personality disorder spectrum and people who are inclined towards that will be drawn to military or LE careers. If they want to belnd in and make a living they would be drawn to the authoritative allure of military and LE careers. Their NPD would also not stand out as much either in such an authoratative, macho environment.

Thanks Aaron, I put forth the dog hanndler theory because I though that might be one way of narrowing down suspects. Also, did he ever break into any houses with dogs? I haven't done enough research yet but if he did then he knew how to control those animals. Also, if he brought a dog to a crime then that dog was very well trained and disciplined....didn't bark etc....and here is a chilling thought: It was comfortable being at crime scenes.

Good Theory

That EAR/ONS was a police officer DOES make sense. However, wouldn't his patroling areas that later were crime scenes alerted witnesses to the fact? It's also possible this guy was a police acadamy washout; possibly due to a female trainer that failed him. The fact that he cleaned up the crime scene, and left no clues leaves me to believe he either studied true crime books, or had first hand training in CSI.

Conjecturing further, what if he was related to someone in LE? Growing up in a LE environment would have helped him elude capture. JMHO

Setrpeoh, anything is possible, but here is why I'm sticking to my theory by offering counterpoints to yours.
As a cop, he would know the whole city and/or have an aptitude for urban geography. He could operate outside his patrol area.I don't think he was washout for one simple reason: He was too damn "good" at what he did. So "good" in fact that I would posit he was "good" at what he did in his "normal" life. In fact, I would also posit he did well at the academy. Also, based on the sheer number of attacks, over a relatively short time period, in a pretty tight geographical grid square, that indicates to me he lived in worked in that environment. That also means he had to "get along" and "blend in", especially if he lived or worked in a densely populated area. This is not someone like the UNABOMBER who lived like a lone wolf in the woods who everyone would think is crazy if they met him who only came out comitt one of his attacks. Again, the sheer number attacks within a tight time period and geography indicates he lived/worked in the city and had to blend to in.As for a female instructor failing him at the academy: IT WAS THE MID 70S. Remember when "Police Woman" was considered progressive and forward thinking? (I don't actually....I'm only 41, but I know my pop culture) There were probably barely any women on the police force if there were any at all back then so I doubt there were any female instructors he had to deal with. Come to think of it that is another reason he would join LE. Very few women, if any, that he would have to deal with as peers.Also, if this guy exhibited regular hostility to women, thats just one more thing that would make him stand out. I'm convinced he could "get along" and I bet he got along ok with women in daily life. I think his problems arose when he attempted a normal sexual relationship with one.I'll also go back to being a cop would help him elude capture more so than any other profession. Imagine if he got pulled over at checkpoint. He would flash his badge and unless the same cop checked him different times he would wave him along without giving it a thought. That brotherhood is so tight, especially back then, you would have to get caught red handed in order to be considered a suspect.As far as growing up in a LE family that fit the profile. Strict upbringing (broad generalization I know), Dad helped him get on with the force (if he needed help) if there was something "iffy" about him that would have prevented him from getting in under normal circumstances.I'll also go back to the case of Henry Hubbard Jr. Google him. He's the cop I mention in my very first post (although I had to be reminded by another poster of his name) Sociopaths, even psychopaths, with a corimound condition of malignant narcissm are quite capable leading a normal life.

Well then, we may assume that EARONS had kept the names of his victims in order that he could find them later through internet providers....and I would guess that would make EARONS somewhere in his 50's around 2002. Ten + years and no word since?

Unknown how the EAR/ONS kept tabs on his victims. The phone number was unlisted (as most rape victims tend to do). Unknown if he has called any victims since the 2002 incident. TLS just posted the possibility that the EAR/ONS (if he created the "ear" profile) read the PM on 5/4/09. That is little over 4 years ago and might be why this case has been described as a "hot case."

December 30, 1979 - Drs Offerman and Manning

32 years ago today, Dr. Robert Offerman and Dr. Debra Alexandria Manning were murdered by the EAR/ONS. This is the first intentional act of murder known to have been committed by the EAR (who is now the ONS) in the commission of his 261's. He certainly was considering it when he attempted to attack the first Goleta couple on Oct. 1, 1979.

The question that is foremost on my mind was where was the EAR between Oct. 1, 1979 and Dec. 29, 1979. October was usually a busy time for the EAR, so why, after his screw up on 10/1/79, did he go dormant? Did he now have a wife (and kids, maybe) and he couldn't go out in the middle of the night without someone accounting for his whereabouts?

Are there any reports of "bizarre burglaries" anywhere in Goleta between 10/1/79 and 12/30/79? We know there were reports of burglaries on 12/29/79 as well as a stolen bicyle. But what about before that? Is the lack of "bizarre burglaries" suggestive of the fact that the EAR was somewhere else and returned to Goleta around Christmas time?

Yes, very true, guys. I remember my parents would avoid towns like Covina back then, because cops looked for any excuse to ticket you. And my dad would get harrassed a lot on account of his weird hair and clothes. It may be that ONS found he couldn't get any recon done.

"I’ve never killed before, but I’m going to now."

Which one of these statements is true? Does it depend on whether or not one believes that the EAR was also the VR? If the EAR was the VR, why would he not let both victims and investigators know that he has killed before? Especially when he is *ed off at law enforcement. Wouldn't he be assured of compliance if his victims knew he was a killer? Wouldn't the terror of such a revelation be off the charts?

Conversely, why did the EAR feel the need to reveal to #16 couple that he "killed some people in Bakersfield?" This was his first couple attack so was this because he was nervous and felt he needed the street cred so he padded his resume? Once his victims were bound, wouldn't that fact alone terrify them in a way that his threats would not and could not? So why not taunt all of his victims with the knowledge of a prior kill?

If the EAR was the Ransacker, wouldn't it be far more terrifying to tell your victims, "I've killed before so I have no problem killing again" or something similar? It does not compute. Especially with his statements later to Victim #21 about "I've never killed before".

If that statement is true, the EAR is not the VR. I am inclined to believe his statement to #21 is the truth (as of 5/17/77). It was a warning of where the EAR could go, if provoked. His statement to #16 seems self-serving because of his anxiety from attacking his first couple and the uncertainty of the situation. I can see no reason for the EAR to not tell his victims that he has killed before especially in light of the fact that he threatened to kill ALL of his victims.

Parsing Words

If the EAR was also the VR, this statement is not true: "I'll kill you like I did some people in Bakersfield". The VR is known to have only murdered Prof. Snelling and it was in Visalia. So, if two parts of the statement are demonstrably false, why would the third part be true? If it was true that he was a killer and wanted his victims to know that, why the need to embellish it? The point of it, if true, would be to gain compliance. So where the alleged killings took place and how many victims there were would be irrelevant.

There are other murders that some suspect the VR of committing. If the VR was responsible for additional murders, it makes no sense that the EAR (if also the VR) could gain the same psycho-sexual high just raping victims as opposed to killing them.

So turning to the other statement made to #21. If the EAR was the VR, that statement makes no sense. "I've never killed before, but I'm going to now". Why would the VR/EAR need to lie about that? His threat to kill his next two victims would have far more credibility if he said he had killed before. So why lie about that fact, if it was true? Both of those statements do not make sense if the EAR was the VR, IMO.

Why would he say "I'm only here to rob you.". He was a liar who liked to mindf*$ck people. The conflicting statements about killing can be no more confusing than the situation where he told the male victim to tell the pigs if this wasn't in the news he would kill someone and then he turned around and told the wife the exact opposite. Both couldn't be true, but he said them anyway.. . his idea of a hilarious joke.

EAR said and did a lot of stuff designed to confuse and misdirect. "All I want is money" was a ploy to help him gain control. Once he gained control the threats were to ensure compliance with his demands. And sow confusion. Worked too.

There may be an apparently logical reason for some statements, however it is just as easy to come up with a logical counter argument.

Your logic is sound in using the guy's own presumed words to show he was not the VR. But then I'm one who never did think the EAR was the VR. So to me you are preaching to the converted.

What I find striking in your original post is that you actually believe something the EAR said. The conventional wisdom of this board is to mistrust everything the guy said ... except of course when it is convenient to do the opposite ... like when posters constantly hype his statement: "I have been to counseling all my life. I was in Stockton State Hospital ..." p. 311, then in a different thread, say: "I refuse to believe anything the guy says" (words to that effect).

So ... congrats on seeing through the illogic of disbelieving everything the guy said.

If he made one true statement, then the possibility exists that he made other true statements. Of course, the trick is to differentiate the lies from the truth ... no easy task.

Yet, it is a mild step forward at least to acknowledge the logic that not everything the guy said was a misdirecting lie.

One possible explanation could be that the victim heard it wrong. He was under a lot of duress. He recounted what he thought he heard. The EAR, obviously, did not necessarily appreciate news coverage of his rapes. (Not in the way that the Zodiac or the Son of Sam did). The EAR, in fact, clarified his threat on his next rape. There was no ambiguity the second time around. So, it may have been a headgame but if it was, he discontinued it by his next attack.

The threat to kill his next two victims brings up another point that would seem to discount a connection to the VR. The criminal profile put together by the SCSD suggested that after the EAR killed, he would need less justification to kill again.

The EAR made a clear demand to victims #21 and #22. He told them that if he saw any news coverage of the rapes, he would kill his next two victims. Not only was there news coverage, the news coverage exploded. Would not that, in the mind of a demented serial offender, provide "justification" to kill? Could he not now blame "the pigs" for his actions of killing his victims? And yet the EAR did not kill. Why? Because he had not reached that point in his evolution, IMO.

Why would he say "I'm only here to rob you."

Port, when comparing that statement to what actually happened, it is obvious that he was not there to rob them. He didn't just want their "food and money". So by comparing what he said against what he did, his true intentions can be identified. (They are self-evident). The "lie" (his script) was used to gain compliance and keep the victims from resisting until they were bound (as F1guyus pointed out).

Notice the evolution of his M.O. between Victim #1 and #5. During the attack on Victim #1 he didn't use the "food and money" script to gain compliance and stated his intention outright. During attack #2, he still didn't use the "all I want is money" and the victim resisted. He didn't use it during #3 and not only did the victim not comply, he lost control of the crime scene. After that, he stopped targeting situations where there were more than one victim present (not including small children).

His standard script began to emerge with Victim #5.

Possibly but the sum total of his actions up until Dec. 30, 1979 leave one with the impression that he did not kill anyone (which would make his 5/17/77 statement true).

I would ask a different question: why are there no identifiable crimes in LA County? I think that there are additional crimes. I know that there were one or two failed attempts in Sacramento that should be on the list but are not. Unfortunately, I do not have the dates and locations of these other crimes.

There are a slew of burglaries that would help to broaden our understanding of this offender. I do not think that there are any EAR/ONS crimes after Janelle Cruz. There may be some in the gap between Sanchez/Domingo and Cruz.

Luckily, in this case, he provided us with two statements which could not both be essentially true. This does provide us with one criteria for judging when the EAR might have made a spontaneous statement of fact. When he is angry and "off-script". Not 100% reliable but that would be one circumstance when he might slip up and speak the truth.

After the EAR/ONS murdered Janelle Cruz, I wonder if he evolved into true serial killer (and stopped raping his victims). The problem with that is that if there is no DNA to connect the murders, there is no real way to connect the crimes. If he changed his "signature" (the binding and the rapes), it will be next to impossible to actually determine which crimes are his. If one case of homicide (with no rape) can be connected forensically to the EAR post-1986, his trail might be picked up again.

Personally, I think the EAR got religion. I think he was so repulsed by what he did that he stopped cold-turkey. I think he may have attempted or committed additional crimes between August 1981 and April 1986. But none after May 5th, 1986.

Applies to the Maggiore Case
This analysis of the EAR's statements regarding "killing some people" also applies to the Maggiore case. If the EAR was responsible for the Maggiore murders, when he moved on to Modesto, Davis, Contra Costa County and Goleta, there was never any mention of "killing some people". I cannot imagine why the EAR would not use such a "fact" to heighten the psychological terror he was causing his victims (if it were true). Again according to the psychologists (as well as serial offenders), the EAR would need less "justification" once he killed.

There were plenty of victims who gave him plenty of "justification" after Feb. 2, 1978 and yet the EAR did not kill. That is because he had not yet crossed that threshold from rapist to rapist/murderer, IMO. When he crossed that threshold, ALL of the subsequent victims were murdered as the Santa Barbara criminal psychologists predicted.

Progression
Arch- I think the whole progression theory needs to be reviewed. Both Ridgeway and Bundy most likely killed or attempted murder as very young teenagers, but their serial crimes didn't begin until much later. I think that there may be an unlinked crime prior to either VR or EAR and it could involve murder.

Ridgway and Bundy aren't necessarily the best case studies to compare as it relates to the EAR/ONS. Those two were bonafide serial killers. They were not serial rapists who graduated to serial killing. In fact, I do not think that either were interested in only raping any of their victims. They had murderous intentions pretty much from the beginning.

The EAR/ONS had no such murderous intent evidenced by the fact that he did not murder any of his victims until 12/30/79. Even after threatening to kill his next two victims on 5/17/77 and even after H/H resisted him on 10/1/79. Even though he continually said, "I'll kill 'em, I'll kill 'em", he didn't kill them (even though H/H believed he was going to kill them). If he killed either Prof. Snelling or the Maggiores without hesitation, why was he hesistating on 10/1/79? Both victims resisted. And he told them that he would kill them if they didn't do what he said. If he had already killed someone prior to 10/1/79 (especially the Maggiores), why would he hesitate on 10/1/79?

In my estimation, what we would have to do is find an example of a serial rapist who killed a victim first, then went on a raping spree (without killing any victims) and then began killing. The closest "match" that we have to the EAR/ONS is Jon Barry Simonis. He was following the same trajectory as the EAR/ONS. He said that he was "thinking about killing his victims" more and more and believed that eventually he would have began murdering them. That is the progression of a certain kind of serial rapist that both the EAR & Simonis were. (I forget the actual term).

After 8 years of looking at this case, I have to come down on one side or the other of both the Visalia Ransacker and the Maggiore murders. I have kept an open mind when reviewing the evidence. My initial view was that the EAR was the Ransacker and the Maggiore's killer. This was based on my ignorance of the case facts. I still have not amended the EAR/ONS website about either case.

After 8 years of looking at all of the cases in question, if I had to come down on one side or the other, I would have to say that I have not seen anything that leads me to conclude that the EAR was responsible for either the Visalia Ransackings or the Maggiore murders.

I had to make the same judgment call on the Goleta cases (before they were linked via DNA). There was enough evidence there to come to a proper conclusion. The Goleta cases provided the missing puzzle pieces in the continuum of violence as well as the maturation of the EAR/ONS' M.O. Both the Visalia Ransacker and Maggiore murders skew that progression from serial rapist to serial rapist/murderer. I keep "doing the math" and it doesn't add up.

I know that there are some examples of serial rapist/killers. Of the ones that I am familiar with, it took very little for one of those lunatics to kill his victim. It was almost the flip of the coin. This just is not the case with the EAR/ONS. In every case where there was either resistance or non-compliance, he did not kill when clearly he could have if he wanted to. The closest he came to killing (prior to 12/30/79) was on 5/17/77 when law enforcement did something that *ed him off (as opposed to the victims). Looking at this case from the perspective of the psychology of this criminal, I see nothing that suggests that he murdered anyone prior to 12/30/79. He thought about it and was thinking about it more and more (like Simonis). Eventually, the EAR found his justification and made the transition. After he made the transition, ever victim was killed after that.

I do not know what it is with certain low-lifes but some of them feel the need to take credit for crimes that they did not commit. I know that there is at least one such loon that took credit for murdering Prof. Snelling. (Hard to know if it was true or not). Lots of different scumbags took credit for the EAR crimes. We know of the one kook who took credit for killing Janelle Cruz. There is a god-like power (note the lowercase "g") connected with murdering someone. Once a killer "kills" someone, there is a change. You no longer have to "threaten" to kill someone, you just do it. This is true with "wannabe gang members", soldiers or serial killers. The most dangerous person you will ever confront will never tell you what he is going to do. He will just do it. The EAR threatened what he would do like any other wannabe and never did it until 12/30/79. After he finally did it, he just did it again and again and again.

Arch- I agree that Simonis offers us a glimpse into what EAR ONS progressions may have been. Simonis was already a compulsive peeper in high school and progressed to exposing himself to women while in the army. I think this excerpt from an interview with Hazlewood demonstrates how just one innocuous comment from a victim caused Simonis to escalate to extreme violence. His arrest also shows that he was prepared to shoot and kill a policeman although there is no evidence he had killed before.

Who shot Miller? Where are the Simonis-like progressive crimes in Sacramento? The Ransacker was clearly a prolific peeper and burglar. I think most telling to me is the careful placement of a single earring on a bed in one of the pre- Offerman Manning burglaries the night of their murder. This is precisely the behavior the Ransacker demonstrated over and over. The strangeness of the Ransacker burglaries certainly matches the strangeness of the Sacramento and Goleta burglaries. The Ransacker managed to gain note in an AP release, not for the vast amounts of goods he was pilfering but for the lack of items he was pilfering.

No one has brought to the board any pre-EAR crimes that align with progression better than those of the Ransacker. I keep an open mind and I look, but these are very unusual crimes. . .moving pictures around or in Sacramento placing jewelry in rape victim's neighbor's homes, etc.

Initially, Simonis’s motive was robbery. He would find a woman at a shopping center, accost her in the parking lot, and put a screwdriver to her throat. He would rob her, but not physically abuse her. As his spree progressed, he became more selective in his victims. He would drive through a neighborhood, pick what looked like an affluent household, or, at a shopping mall, focus on a woman driving an expensive car, wearing a gold watch, large diamonds, or flashy jewelry. Did a woman’s physical appearance matter? “Attractive ones would have an appealing effect on me. It wasn’t always the motive for following them, but it was a major one. I figured that if a woman was attractive and her husband was well off, he’d do things to keep her happy. Buy her expensive jewelry and other nice things.”

Simonis went on to describe other methods for procuring victims. At one time, he worked in a hospital as a cardiovascular specialist, and “I had access to all the medical records. I knew where the patients lived, what their husbands did, whether he worked in or out of town, who was home during the day, and who wasn’t.

Also, if they were having surgery, I’d have access to their keys, which they usually left in their nightstands by their beds. I’d go down and have a copy made, and return the original back to the key ring, and copy down their address and later on use that to get into their house.”

Over the course of his criminal career, Simonis’s violent impulses increased dramatically. He began to physically assault his victims, demanding anal sex, forcing women to fellate him, and punching them, often in the breasts. One night he broke into a home and assaulted the thirteen-year-old baby-sitter, forcing her to perform oral sex. She tried to frighten him off by telling him,

“You know, a police officer lives here.”

“No *,” Simonis responded. “What time are they going to get home?”

She told him it would be at least a couple of hours. Fine, he said, “Then I’ll wait.”

Not long afterward, the detective and his wife returned home.

They’d been out celebrating their fifteenth wedding anniversary.

When they came in, Simonis overtook them both, handcuffed them, and raped the wife in front of her husband. At one point, the husband asked, “Are you all right?” and she said, “Yes, he’s being a gentleman.”

At that point, Simonis became enraged, and began beating and burning the woman’s breasts so furiously that she later required a double mastectomy. When Roy asked him why he’d done that to his victim, Simonis said, “Who the * was she to tell me that I’m being a gentleman? I was no gentleman, and I proved it.”

Was Simonis himself aware of the escalation in his violence?

“Oh yes. It started out very mild and progressed very heavily.”

But ultimately, ordinary sexual gratification wasn’t his goal. What was important was “degradation to the women, making them feel completely dominated. My intention was to inflict fear in them.”

At one point, Roy and Ken asked Simonis directly if he was a sexual sadist. “Absolutely,” he said. “I enjoy their suffering.”

Later, after the video camera was turned off, Simonis told Hazelwood it was probably a good thing he’d finally been apprehended. The reason, he said, was that rape was becoming boring for him. More and more often now, his fantasies were of sadistic murder.

34 years ago today, Jimmy Carter was President and meeting with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for peace talks with Israel. Jerry Brown was Governor of California and the State Senate voted down the Peripheral Canal project. The U.S. Senate voted to halt the B-1 bomber program. Patricia Hearst appealed her 1976 conviction to the supreme Court. Roman Polanski fled the country to avoid being sentenced in his statutory rape case. The body of David Ferreira, the 20 month old victim of Richard Trenton Chase, still had not yet been found.

The 76ers beat the Nuggets 104 to 101. The Celtics beat the Lakers 103 to 100. Players' "Baby Come Back" and Randy Newman's "Short People" were #1 and #2 on the Top 40 Billboard charts. Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" had just charted. "Coma" and "High Anxiety" were in the movie theaters.

At 9:00 pm, Hawaii Five-O was on Channel 10. Barney Miller was on Channel 13. Channel 3 had a special called, "A Celebration at Ford's Theater". "Midnight Cowboy" was on Channel 40. The weather forecast was partly cloudy with a chance of rain.

At approximately 8:50 pm, 21 year old Sgt. Brian Maggiore and his 20 year old wife Katie took their dog Thumper for a walk. Approximately 20 minutes later, they would be shot in the backyard of a house on La Alegria Way. 34 years later, their murders would still be unsolved and still shrouded in mystery.

We will never forget what happened to Brian and Katie. They were just kids starting out in life. Whether or not they were, in fact, murdered by the EAR/ONS, there is at least one other person who knows what happened to Brian and Katie, maybe more. I hope that he comes forward as a matter of conscience and provides Brian and Katie's families with the closure that they need and have been waiting for.

If you take this secret to the grave with you, you will carry that guilt and shame for eternity. You will not be able to hide from it as you are able to do now. Without the fruits of repentance, there is no forgiveness. If there is anyone else who knows what really happened, I pray that they have the guts to come forward and do what is right in the eyes of God. Your righteousness will be rewarded eternally.

God forbid that we should let "facts' get in the way of understanding these crimes. Part of the reason that law enforcement is no longer releasing "case facts" is because of all of the baseless theories that have wafted onto this board like a stench from an outhouse. That is why I have to spend so much time reintroducing "facts' into the discussion.

Well-meaning people come onto this board and read these "theories" such as the EAR A/B Theory and the TK/Zodiac/EAR/ONS/Fill-In-The-Blanks Killer Theory and then start forwarding worthless case leads based on those fallacious theories.

Let's continue discussing the merits of the EAR A/B Theory. Let's not get confused by the "fact" that the Goleta cases have now been linked conclusively by DNA. And let's continue discussing the possibility that TK is the EAR/ONS and put pressure on LE to spend time and money testing his DNA. Let's not get confused by the "fact" that we have now seen TK's driver's license putting him thousands of miles away from Sacramento mere hours after he supposedly committed a rape here.

Let's not discuss any case facts here at all because they seem to get in the way of those people who care nothing about the truth or the victims and would rather perpetuate their own vain imaginings about what they think happened. It's so much more interesting than what actually happened.

The reason the case has never been solved in the first place is the opposite of what you have stated. It has not been solved because fantasy-based case theories were formed and then the facts were manipulated to fit the erroneous theory. The Cart before the Horse.

That happened in Goleta. It happened in Ventura. It probably happened in Sacramento in the sense that the EAR was believed to have been an 18 to 20 year old (although suspects 18 to 35 have been looked at). And it's happened on this board with EAR A/B and TK/Zodiac/EAR/ONS/etc.

I am sorry if you are intimidated by my insistence on injecting facts and reason into the debate. This is as serious as it gets. There is a monster who so far has gotten away with the rape of 50+ victims and the murder of at least 10 victims. 12 if you count the Maggiores. 13 if you include Prof. Snelling.

I have seen the real world damage that comes from suffering fools. I have also seen the damage done by people who have come on this board to intentionally or unintentionally manipulate and mislead potential witnesses. You have the luxury of not having to deal with that. You also have the luxury of not being committed to trying to bring a measure of closure to the survivors and the families of the victims.

Do your homework. Understand the case. Offer your perspective. But do not expect me to placate a theory that is found to be errant. I did this with the EAR A/B Theory. I left the board and let that lunacy metastasize to the point where witnesses were contacting me asking if it were true.

Same with the TK lunacy. I left the board and left that nonsense unchallenged to the point to where "EAR investigators" were taking it seriously. Regarding the Maggiore case, I still do not know if the EAR was or was not involved. What I am certain of is that if he was involved, he did not act alone. I am also certain that those men who murdered the Maggiores were airmen from the base. As mentioned, the original investigators believed this. It is not news except to maybe RM. This was in 1978 WHILE THE EAR WAS STILL ACTIVE IN SACRAMENTO. That should be your biggest clue. The original investigators did not believe this was an EAR crime. They looked at airmen. Why? Because that is what the preponderance of the case "facts" suggests.

But I get it. You're not interested in case facts. That's the good news. I am through posting "case facts" here. I now agree with LE about releasing any more case information. Look at what good it's done here. Now you will be able to concoct whatever fantastic scenario your heart desires and it will not be impeded by "facts". AK may as well come back right now.

Here is the rub. Something that you either miss or do not care about. If the EAR did not commit the Maggiore murders, then at least two people will have gotten away with murder so long as investigators continue to believe the EAR was responsible. That might sit well with you. I doubt that it would sit well with the families of Brian and Katie Maggiore.

That is why I insist on "facts". This is way too important to get wrong. Like the Goleta cases back in 1980. I am sure Sgt. Baker felt as you and RM feel. The EAR didn't commit the Goleta murders. He never lost control of a crime scene so it can't be him. Forget that he lost control of several crime scenes in Sacramento including the one right before he moved on to Goleta.

But, here I go again about "facts" and after all, what do facts have to do with a criminal investigation...

To state that you must be right about something today because you were right about something else yesterday makes no sense. No matter how many times you restate that you were right about the EAR a and b theory or the Goleta detective it really has nothing to do with the Maggiore murders. I knew Goleta was connected and I knew that the EAR a and b theory was highly unlikely does that mean that I am automatically right about the Maggiore murders?

I would like to chime in. I think arch makes an excellent point. We should focus on case facts. However this is a discussion board and everyone should feel free to express their theories, no matter how outlandish. Those of us who focus on facts should also be able to call BS if a theory is off the mark and can be disputed via facts. This is an unconventional case, and in my opinion, the perp does not fit the conventional profile of your typical serial rapist/killer. Maybe some theories may be correct. That is why those of you who post here with case facts, should point out what is wrong because you know it to be, based on your evaluation of the evidence. One thing that drives me nuts is that I continue to see people post that ear had blonde hair. I have stated this before, if SuddenTerror is correct, there were national police broadcasts sent out in the 80's that said, possibly dark hair, not possibly blond. I assume this is because LE thought he had dark hair. Several witnesses said he had dark hair when he was EAR. Some people rely on this board for facts, we should all do the best to state what we believe to be facts and if you have a theory state that this is my theory, or idea. You too should not be ridiculed. But if you are brave enough to engage the conversation, be brave enough to take criticism. That is what makes this work. Now let's try to find this guy.

Yes, I have found plenty of shoelaces on the ground throughout my life. They break, are littered, fall out of trash cans, and most commonly of all, fall from “shoe graffiti” often seen on power lines all over places like CA. Shoe graffiti has been around for decades and is even seen in rural towns. Laces are light enough to get scatter by wind. CA can be a very windy place.

You say, “I only want to hear from people who acknowledge that my theory is possible and can then politely argue their case.” Translation: there’s no way for me to respond. The only thing I have said that can be construed as impolite was to say you’ve been whiny and snippy. That is the way you come across to me. You haven’t done much to disprove that. Again I apologize that you are choosing to assume the worst about me. I am nothing like the person you are describing. I have said over a dozen times that Arc's theory is possible. I just do not think it is likely. As for your statements regarding the shoe laces. I went over them one by one to examine the relative strength of each of them. You feel that these are reasonable ways that the shoe laces could of wound up next to Brian. I respectfully disagree. This is a discussion board.
Yes shoes laces break. The ones found were not broken so that really doesn't explain the laces that were found. They don't fall out of trash cans. If they are in a trash can someone or something would have to physically remove them from the can. Shoes are indeed thrown over power lines where they hang by their laces. These laces are firmly affixed to the shoes so they can not be the source of the laces found at the crime scene. Laces are not light enough to get scattered by the wind. If you do not believe me then put some laces on the ground on a windy day and see how far they travel. I honestly appreciate your effort to come up ways that the laces got there. It really isn't an easy thing to explain. Which is my point. If you choose to believe another theory on how the laces got there I really do not mind. Please let me know if you come up with any other theories on how the laces came to be found at the crime scene. Arc is a pretty smart guy and he has been thinking about these laces for about ten years. The best he can come up with is that the Airmen planted them to frame the EAR. The best I can come up with is that the Police planted them to frame the EAR. Do I think that is likely? No. Do I think it is possible. Yes it is possible. Highly unlikely. But still possible. These laces are indeed very strong physical evidence that the EAR committed these murders. They are not proof beyond all doubt, but they do seem to indicate that the EAR killed Brian and Katie. Oh and I don't care that you don't agree with me. I only care why you don't agree with me. That is the point of a discussion board. To float ideas, listen to the counter arguments and then to measure their relative strengths.

As I think about the EAR's time in Rancho Cordova, it was a very small area in Rancho Cordova where he actually offended with the exception of the 1979 attack (and 1975 attack if he was responsible). His attacks were limited to the Cordova Meadows area. That was a neighborhood populated largely with Air Force families. The apartments in the area were primarily populated by AF personnel.

The subdivision was not unlike a small town. Most everyone knew (or knew of) almost everyone. (The apartments were a little different because of the transient nature of the AF personnel. But the families that lived in the homes usually were familiar and interacted with each other.

What I am getting at is that if the EAR was a local yokel, someone would have recognized him peeping and prowling in the area. The EAR was seen by so many people so many times that IF he was someone from the areea, he would have been recognized.

Also, Rancho Cordva had it's own neighbor policing. We all knew the deputies who patrolled the area. It was their beat. The deputies would have known who ALL the regular peepers, prowlers and burglars were. Someone as prolific as the EAR certainly would have encountered someone who knew him (if he was from the Cordova Meadows area).

I was pondering this factoid while thinking about the Maggiore murders. If the Maggiore's killer was the EAR and he was from that small subdivision in Rancho Cordova, he would have been recognized and caught already. So, that, at least in my mind, reduces the likelihood that the EAR sprang from the loins of some Rancho Cordovan.

I do think that the EAR lived in Rancho Cordova at some point. I do believe it was prior to 1976. He may have been a dependent and his family moved away and he returned. Or he was one of the airman (as he alleged to one victim) who was discharged. He has a familiarity with Air Force rank (and the fact that there is an Officer's Club on the bases).

He did seem to be familiar enough with the Cordova Meadows area to be able to traverse it at night. The Maggiore killer was not smart enough to run west into the American River Parkway (which was a shorter distance than his bizarre run to the east). That is an area familiar to the EAR and would be a no-brainer when seeking to elude LE. If the Maggiore killer was the EAR AND from the Cordova Meadows area, someone along the way would have recogized him -OR- recognized his composite sketch.

I have a friend who was an artful dodger in his youth. He hung around with other like-minded criminals. They would go out at night committing burglaries and other petty crimes. Rarely would they commit crimes in their own neighborhoods. Even these kids knew not to be seen prowling their own neighborhood. He was never caught and has a clean record. But then, he was smart enough to stop committing crimes. ALL of his cohorts who continued in their criminal ways were eventually arrested. (And no, he is not the EAR).

Rossmoor Cluster

The EAR's only attack in Rancho Cordova outside the Cordova Meadows area was Rossmoor. Here is an important question: why didn't the EAR feel "comfortable" in the Rossmoor area? Part of the answer is that Det. Shelby lived in that area at the time. Recall Shelby's account of the ski masked man who hung upside down and flashed a light in his kid's window.

This raises additional questions:

1) Did the EAR live in that area as opposed to the Cordova Meadows area?
2) How did the EAR know where Shelby lived? Is his father or a friend of the family a Sheriff's Deputy?
3) Was the 1979 Rancho Cordova attack 'sending a message" to the SCSD? It wouldn't be the first one.
4) Is this how the EAR got his inside information about the investigation. The EAR was familiar with police frequencies. He seemed to know where the TRAP teams were and he ALWAYS managed to elude the police.

(Note: in the post, I refer to this place as Rossmoor. On the Google Map, it is actually the Cordova Greens area. (I never heard that area referred to as such but there you go.)

EAR is believed to have at least on two separate occasions to have crossed the paths of waiting LE. There was the bicycle bridge incident in Dec 1977. The undercover detectives were at the waters edge and did not make it in time to intercept him. The other incident did not make it the papers and was learned by word of mouth. EAR seemed to have walked into a stakeout but was able to outrun SAC's fastest deputy, he also was supposedly helped by the fog. If he truly had inside information I dont think he would have subjected himself to those incidents.

By using common sense; listening to police scanners, willing to travel great distances by foot or bike at night and hitting all over the place were the true reasons he was never caught. He was not "all knowing." He did not tap into victims phone lines or was the son of a police chief. It was a combination of skill and luck, that is all.

With all due respect, that is not all. Because we do not know who the EAR/ONS is, we cannot definitively rule in or rule out some connection to law enforcement. I know that a criminal profile will show that he had educated himself about rules of evidence, etc whether formally or informally.

We know for a fact that he switched David Witthuhn's ham radio over to the police frequency. The investigators asked Witthuhn whether or not he had switched his radio over to the police channels and Witthuhn told them that when he left (for the hospital) his radio was not switched to the police channels.

So that is a specific instance of the EAR listening in on the police channels. So I would guess (based on that info) that the EAR/ONS acquired most of his operational intel by doing just that.

You cite two incidents where the EAR walked into a stake out. But out of how many stakeouts? (Not including the Narcs and other undercover details). And we are also not including all of the CBer's out there who were part of the EARS patrol? He also managed to avoid the pre-planned traffic stops.

No one can answer how he knew about the Del Dayo Parents Club meeting. I doubt that he had kids attending the Del Dayo school. There was no advertisement in the papers. I've checked. So, it is possible that he learned for the meeting through law enforcement.

No one (least of all me) is suggesting that the EAR/ONS is all knowing. That said, we do not know whether or not he tapped his victim's phone lines because ND says there was at least one instance when he did. ND's information was usually reliable. He managed to not call any of the victims who had phone traps on their lines. The only reason we have the recording is because the victim had an answering machine that could record the call.

So, I appreciate that you do not want us to over-estimate the EAR/ONS' criminal capabilities (and raise them to legendary status) but by the same token, we shouldn't under-estimate his capabilities, either. There are a lot of unanswered questions that are not explained by just skill and luck.

We do not know how he knew where Shelby lived. We do not know how he was able to get unlisted phone numbers of victims. And we do not know how he was able to track victims when they moved away.

His ability to do that required a little more than skill and luck, IMO. Until these questions are answered, we have to keep an open mind and not automatically discount certain uncomfortable possibilities.

It was SOP that whenever there is a suspected EAR attack, the EAR TRAP teams would go to pre-determined locations and stop traffic and check for anyone who matched the EAR's description. That is where some of the suspects (mentioned in Sudden Terror) came from. The EAR (as far as we know) managed to avoid the TRAP teams. Part of why he was able to do this is because he had about a 15 to 30 minute start when he left his victim's bound. But as we know, there were a couple of instances when the police were called immediately. And he still managed to avoid the TRAP teams.

Night Driver from the old A&E board. Night Driver's source was a sheriff's deputy. He says that there was a sophisticated tap taken from the phone box of one of the victims. I cannot indepently confirm this but ND usually did his homework. ND also said that on one occasion the EAR used a stolen boat to cross the river after an attack. Again, unconfirmed but that is what he said he was told by a deputy. It would surprise no one because he attacked on both sides of the American River.

Some of the victims moved away after the attack. and changed their numbers. The EAR was still able to call them.

Investigators knew that he was calling victims after he attacked them and in some cases had the line set up to be traced. This can be relegated to luck because he did not call with any predictable regularity. (Except prior to an attack).

Most likely a phone company but a connection to LE cannot be dismissed as we still do not know how he knew about the Del Dayo Parent's Club Meeting. It was to discuss Crime Prevention but the rumors of serial rapist were swirling through the community. The SCSD was bombarded with questions about the serial rapist and the meeting turned into an impromptu Q&A on the EAR.

How would the EAR have found out about a "Crime Prevention" seminar and why would he show up there? (His rapes had not yet been publicized). And we still do not know how he figured out where Shelby lived.

Debunking the Myth

The most logical answer to this question about how he knew about the "crime prevention" seminar is that he grew up in one of the neighborhoods of the early attacks. All the women would of been keeping each other posted about the attacks and the up coming meeting. Which neighborhood did EAR seem to know best? The neighborhood defined by the attendence boundaries of Cordova Gardens Elementary or Del Dayo. In short he knew about the meeting because people that he knew were talking about it. IMO that is the most likely answer.


As far as the TRAP teams go, they were primarily focused on vehicle traffic. EAR often had a head start and could have been on the freeway long before the police were notified. In a large number of the attacks he was only 1/4 mile to a 1/2 mile away from the American River Parkway (The attack on Casilada is a good example). Once he set foot in the Parkway at night it would be next to impossible to find him. It is rumored he stole a boat, he was known to steal bikes, hop over fences, climb rooftops and hide in garbage trucks. Does that sound like he knew where the police were? Most criminals dont plan. He did. He was willing to go where the police were unlikely to look.What I do know is this guy went to High School, worked and lived somewhere. All signs have always pointed to Rancho Cordova as the origins of this creature. If a laser-like focus was put there like what has been done in Visalia, I believe this case could be solved.

My guess would be: (1) maybe he went to a bar or cafe were cops frequented after work and he followed him from there to his residence (2) could EAR have done surveillance on police stations and followed them to their residences?

Being that the couple from the town hall meeting who later became victims attended the Del Dayo (Carmichael) meeting, then what you are suggesting is that the EAR lived in Carmichael. Which is what I have come to believe. He once lived in Rancho Cordova and then was living in Carmichael at the outset of the EAR attacks. This is also what Dr. Rossmo's geographic profile indicates.

There were several instances where the EAR didn't get a 15 to 30 minute headstart and he still managed to avoid the TRAP teams. And even though he rode a bicycle, he was usually parked approx. two blocks away (with a few noted exceptions). The bloodhounds would track his scent usually to the place where his vehicle was parked.

And speaking of bloodhounds, they would be able to track that creep in the American River Parkway and he was still able to evade detection. As for rooftops, remember, there were helicopter units looking for him and he managed to evade them as well. Helicopter units just started being used when the EAR crawled out of the sewer. Recall that even after the 3rd EAR attack, deputies arrived within two minutes and the EAR casually walked away with no pants on.

The same is true with the Maggiore murders (for those of you who believe that was the EAR). Deputies responded in 3 minutes. That perp managed to evade ground units as well as STAR 2 (the helicopter unit) with multiple witnesses calling in his whereabouts.

Even the VR managed to avoid all of the roadblocks that were put up immediately after he tried to kill McGowen. His ability to evade law enforcement was uncanny. You can chalk that up to skill and luck. I chalk it up to inside information and knowing exactly how law enforcement was going to respond.

We don't know that he actually avoided the TRAP teams. We know that the teams never took him into custody. We also know that a suspect was jailed but released when EAR struck while the guy the cops were sure was him was in custody. Fact is prior to DNA there was no way EAR was going to be convicted (repeat convicted) of anything. He knew the rules of evidence. Or at least that's what a Stockton policewoman told my wife. As well as "Don't plan on us catching this guy" And I remember one story in the Sac papers where one of Duane Lowe's deputies said they were hoping somebody would shoot him dead. LE was baffled or so they publicly said.

Good point, F1. One caveat, none of the people stopped by the TRAP Teams (so far) have turned out to be the EAR. Inv. Pool (and this is an assumption) checked most of those guys out and so far, no CODIS hit.

The one thing that almost worked (and this is how a serial rapist would normally be caught back in the '70's) is to wait for the serial creep to walk into a surviellance operation. This happened with Jack Jessup. It almost happened to the VR. And it almost happened to the EAR. If he had prior convictions (like Jessup) he would have done his time and been out re-offending in about 3 to 5 years like Jessup.

Why was this cluster so confined geographically? Why were the girls in this cluster so close in age? How was the EAR able to find so many young victims alone in such a small area? Why would he keep coming back to the same neighborhood when he could of gone East or West to find similar homes near the river to attack? To me the only logical answer is that the EAR grew up within the attendance boundaries of Cordova Gardens Elementary. He was their contemporary. In short he had a hit list. He probably did not live in the neighborhood at the time which is why four years out of high school he felt confident that no one could identify him. He was a commuter. Bottomline whoever the EAR was he had a special connection to and a intimate knowledge of the Cordova Gardens Neighborhood.

This is why he had the uncanny ability to find young girls alone in the middle of a neighborhood in Cordova Gardens. In many of the other clusters he discovered victims by chance and they varied widely in age and were spread out quite a ways geographically. Often they lived in homes that backed up to open space making them easy targets. In these other clusters he took what he could find, in the Cordova Gardens Neighborhood he already knew where to look. Only a kid who grew up in that neighborhood would know where all the girls lived.

There could only be about 100 to 200 men that live in that neighborhood and are the correct age. Odds are the EAR is on that list. PLEASE HELP ME point this investigation in the right direction. If anyone out there can help me get ahold of Private Investigator Mike Schott (mentioned in Sudden Terror for data-mining) it would be a great help. Please lobby G to tell her LE contacts to start looking where the offender most likely grew up.

Noob here, read the la mag article, read ST and then I started with the Internet.....when I found this site I started reading every post I could. Having read over half of the posts on this site, I stumbled across this post and thought it was one of the better posts I have come across. The phone tap found is very interesting to me since I always thought that EAR just sitting in the bushes for hours on end with no sound was kinda hard to glean any real info. I was thinking maybe he planted electronic listening devices, very far fetched I know, and I have exactly zero evidence to provide for this crazy idea. What is the general consensus about EAR and his ability to obtain very private information, from unlisted phone numbers to dates of vacations and even when one victim started a switched from days to swing shift position?

I have a couple on stalking techniques. The purpose of the books is to help the victims prevent stalkers from doing a lot of these things. But in the books they give a lot of info. on what one stalker did to his ex wife for example. It is surprising what even regular guys with an obsession can pull off. They put gps's in cars and cheap voice activated recorders hidden places. Phones can be easily tapped. I was told the only time you know you are having a private conversation is when you are outdoors walking and cell phones are turned off. But if you are being stalked by ear for example, I'm sure there is even more to this. Ear/ons is not a typical stalker. Maybe when the Cordova crimes were happening he had less technology at his fingertips.

I still think this would be a good starting point to look for EAR/ONS..., right down the road from his first reported attacks near Paseo Dr. is Coloma Shopping Center,ther used to be a Raleys' there I think it was just a neighborhood grocery before that.. This would have been a good spot for EAR to survey possible victims and follow them home .., ther was also a attempted carjacking in the same parking lot around attack # 8. I wonder if L.E ever showed that victim composits of EAR?...

Back in the 1970s and early 1980s, technology was way behind where it is now. As well as there being no internet and mobile phones, such things as listening devices were not cheaply available to the general public.

Even going back to 1997, when I was a fifteen year old living in London, when many people were starting to get mobiles phones, and the internet in their homes, it wasn't that simple to get hold of listening devices.

I remember there being a spy shop in central London, and going there one Saturday with a friend, only to be told that we needed an appointment. We would possibly have had to provide personal details too.

As fifteen year olds, we had only seen such things in James Bond films etc, and were just interested to have a look. That kind of stuff was really expensive then, and there is no way we could have afforded it, let alone have any reasonable use for it.

Back to the subject of how he knew so much about his victims. and of course it is known that he broke into people's homes in the build up to attacking them.

I would also come back to my postman theory, as someone who could read people's letters, could know their movements, could know certain areas very well, would not stand out in any area, and could return to crime scenes without arousing suspicion.

A postman may also be someone who would think it important to hide their face, which not all rapists do, and disguise their voice, which is really quite unusual. He could be finished his work by lunchtime, giving him the rest of the day to do whatever he wanted.

In the mid to late 1990's I discovered Radio
Shack sold small plastic voice activated digital recorders. You could buy several at a time for a few dollars. They could also be plugged into a phone and used to record conversations. That is the extent of my spy toy knowledge. Dennis Radar was an actual employee of one of the most common homealarm system companies. So, if he came to set your system up, you were getting a serialMurderer to set up your home alarm system. I know that is beside the point but it is ironic.

If the EAR had killed either Prof. Snelling or the Maggiores, the Danville husband and his wife would have been dead. The husband was in the EAR's face like no other intended victim. (Like Sgt. Maggiore is alleged to have been). The EAR allegedly had no problem chasing Brian and Katie Maggiore down and shooting them because Sgt. Maggiore supposedly confronted him. The Danville confrontation happened after the Maggiore murders and right before the Goleta 1 debacle. Rather than shoot the husband and his wife, the EAR hesitated like he had never been confronted in such a manner previously. He cr@pped himself and was allowed to slither out of the home to go clean himself up.

The EAR allegedly shot Prof. Snelling who confronted him in his own home while the perp was attempting to kidnap his daughter. That is the same scenario in Danville except that the EAR was preparing to rape the wife. Where is this impulsive killer who shot Rod Miller for chasing after him and allegedly shot the Maggiores because Sgt. Maggiore allegedly "confronted" the EAR? It does not add up.

Conversely, when Dr. Offerman "lunged" at the EAR or when Gregory Sanchez confronted the EAR, both were shot. That is because the EAR finally resolved to kill his victims. He had not done so prior to 12/30/79. The resolve probably came because of Danville and Goleta 1. The EAR lost control of both crime scenes. The continuum of violence does not fit any way you slice it if the EAR was either Prof. Snelling's or the Maggiores' killer. 12/30/79 was the EAR's first homicide. I am now certain of that.

Does this sound like the same guy who shot Prof. Snelling or the Maggiores with less provocation? Actions speak louder than words. His actions throughout his crime spree from June 18, 1976 through December 29, 1979 indicate that he had not killed until that fateful evening in December of 1979.

Because he hadn't.

He'd done how many of these B&E rapes and was _never confronted_ or caught off guard in a home by the man. This was a surprise. In contrast, at the Snelling home he must have been aware that that could happen, the father's pursuit, so it wasnt really unexpected. If he were VR. Im just saying.

The Danville man also was in close quarters with ear in the room, Snelling not so. If Maggiore confronted him, it was on the street in some light, with the Danville man, they were in the dark. It is not the same set-up. The Danville man was 6'2 and 220 and in his face suddenly. There is no mention of a gun in that situation, but dig, it might have been in his jacket pocket or holster when he was pulling the mask over his head, which takes two hands to do. By the time he went for his gun, that bear of a man could have taken him down and sat on him.

But I can see what youre saying. That if he hesitated then to shoot, that he hadnt been ready to kill anyone in that moment and why not if it would be reflexive to him to do so, had he previously shot others the same way? But the siuations were different.

Youre putting a lot of faith into the idea that the continuum of violence is not fallible and that it fits every criminal.

He probably shot Offerman because he was knocked off his cocky high horse by the Danville man and he realized that, yes, he could jumped by a guy while in their home, and was either prepared to do it if it happened again or set it up to happen that way.

The killing of the victims for ear had to fit his fantasy. We know at that time of the Danville attack that he was ramping up to kill, it may have been swimming in his mind even as the danville man surprised him. But his killing had to be done in his way to fulfill his fantasy. What do we see what happens to ears when there becomes a hitch in his fantasy/plans? He becomes discombobulated. This is what happens because his head is occupied with fulfilling his fantasy exactly to measurement. Out on the street, where part of you anticipates exposure, his head is clear. But not in the home, not when he's in the midst of making his fantasy real.

Whoa. I never said he was either vr or the maggiore killer. I said that from the specious information on vr on this board, he seems to be very similar and its likely they are the same. What would obviously settle this is if they found dna or such to link them.
The maggiores is a tougher sell. especially since the shoelaces bit always gets changed: they were found on the ground, in a tree, with a diamond knot...wtf is the truth? Either way, this is a more tenuous link for anyone to make. If there is no truth in any of the 'info' given on these two cases, then yeah its a ginned up fantasy to link them.

There is no forensic evidence linking either the VR or the Maggiore murders to the EAR. And so the assumption should be that they are not linked. Based on an 8 year independent review of the cases, I have finally reached the conclusion that they are not linked. The only thing that will convince me otherwise at this point is a forensic link. That is how the naysayers were convinced that the Goleta cases were linked. I am now one of the naysayers and I do not believe that the EAR was responsible for either Prof. Snellings murder or the Maggiores'.

Arch, Arent you taking the same stance that Larry Poole did? I don't recall any officials stating they were looking into the VR as a serious lead. Because they go on the solid facts, like you are choosing to do. It sounds like it's been maddening to you, so stick with your convictions.

I have no idea what solid information about the VR would be, because Ive yet to see any here linked to a credible source.

I've kept an open mind about these cases for 8 years. I have gathered enough information on the Maggiore case to be certain that if the EAR was involved at all, he did not act alone. With regards to the VR, there are compelling similarities in their M.O. And there are, of course, dissimilarities. I have chosen to disregard the similarities as well as the dissimilarities and look strictly at the crimes as a series. With either the Snelling murder or the Maggiore murders included in the series, the EAR's evolution does not follow a predictable escalation. The explanations for this become tortured, IMO. First he is an impulsive killer with Snelling, then he hesitates during the 3rd EAR attack. Then he is an intentional, obsessed pursuer in the Maggiore murders, then he is an abject coward when confronted by the Danville husband. Once the Snelling case and the Maggiore case are removed, the escalation is clear.

As I said, it could be as you say that the EAR's inhibition to kill fluctuated wildly and unpredictably (until after 12/30/79). Or the EAR did not kill anyone prior to 12/30/79. After he did, his actions were quite predictable and were predicted.

Perhaps the reason why EAR-ONS did not shoot anyone at Danville and the 1st Goleta attack is a simple one:
He did not have a gun with him! No gun or knife was seen at Danville and in Goleta no gun was mentioned! The EAR-ONS used a knive from the victims kitchen. At least in the 1st Goleta attack EAR-ONS was not equipped in his usual EAR-standard with a Gund and a (hunting)knive. While during the most attacks EAR was well prepared und equipped (skimask, handgun and/or knive, shoelaces..) there where also those attacks in which he seemed to be ill-equipped, using inprovised weapons such like an axe. These ill-prepared attacks could be spontaneous offences, in which EAR (for what reasons ever) did not have his usual "kit" with him. What if Danville and 1st Goleta where such unprepared attacks in which EAR was carried away by his compulsion to attack...?

That is possible, even likely given that the EAR didn't do much beyond soiling himself. He didn't brandish a gun with Victim #48 (47 on the website). He only threatened to cut her. This was a week before the Danville attack. In the prior Danville attack on 6/11/79, he had a gun and threatened to "blow their heads off".

We know that he had some type of weapon at Danville 3. Because the intended victims did not see any weapon, it is impossible to determine whether a gun was present or not. It would be atypical for the EAR to attack a couple (male present) without a firearm.

In Goleta 1, one explanation would be that the EAR was visiting at the time and probably did not have his usual "rape kit" with him. At Danville 3, I would be at a loss to explain why he didn't have a firearm with him. But that would explain why he loss control of his bowels and didn't gun down his victims. It is too bad that the Danville husband didn't come to that conclusion (whether true or not). The EAR's reign of terror would have ended that night.

One would assume that if the EAR took a weapon from the Danville home, it would have been out, ready for use (like it was in Goleta 1). Whatever weapon the EAR had with him was concealed as was his flashlight. I would guess that it was holstered and if the EAR attempted to get it, the Danville husband would have tore his head off.

That brings up another issue. Does anyone believe that the killer of either Prof. Snelling or the Maggiores would ever show up at a crime scene without a firearm?

Very unlikely, the maggiores were hunted down with the intent to kill them. If the EAR just wanted them off his trail while he was actively prowling in the area, he was was sucessful because the couple was fleeing in terror, no need for him to chase them down. He could have vanished in the darkness without a trace. Chasing them down and killing them in a mess of screams an ringing gunshots would only increase his chance of being caught with a smoking gun in his hands. So, whoever killed the Maggiores did it because he WANTED THEM DEAD and would not show up without a firearm!Whoever killed Prof. Snelling had also a murderous intend. Trying to abduct a young girl while the father is also in the house is very likely to end up in a violent confrontation. No father would step back when he encounters a masked madman who drags his beloved daughter aut of the house in the middle of the night. So the abductor had to be prepared to encounter desperate resistance. He WAS PREPARED and brought a gun with him und used that gun without hesitation. So again: no, ist is unlikely that he would commit this sort of crime without a firearm!

We don't know if he had a gun at either Danville or HH. What we do know is that before he could kick off the script, he already had victims fleeing in different directions and out in the yard. We could argue that he learned his lesson on that one from Snelling and McGowen- never a good idea to have shoot outs on suburban streets.

The VR didn't learn his lesson well. He attempted to kill Det. McGowen after he had murdered Prof. Snelling and I believe that there were a few ransackings after the McGowen incident. I hear that some allegedly were committed in 1976 but I don't know if we'll ever get confirmation on that.

Also, if the VR is the EAR and is RM's assailant and the murderer of the Maggiores, he didn't learn anything from past mistakes. We know that the EAR "evolved". We could chart his evolution. That is part of this "continuum of violence". Without these anomalies, we could see the EAR moving predictably toward committing homicides. With the anamolies forced into the crime series, this predictability is spotty and confused.

And by the way, it was the continuum of violence that allowed me to figure out that the Goleta cases were part of the series while certain others argued that they were not. Remove the Goleta cases and the EAR's evolution into a serial killer makes no sense. Add the Goleta cases and it makes perfect sense. The Prof. Snelling and Maggiore cases have the opposite effect. Add them and the evolution to serial killer makes no sense. Remove them and the evolution makes perfect sense.

Arch- I don't necessarily buy into the peeper-hot prowler- rapist-murderer progression. I study quite a few cases. This one has always interested me because the perp is in the right age group and place, but is, of course not EAR because the DNA is in CODIS. These monsters are predictable only in their unpredictability.

Del Dayo Townhall Meetings

These are newspaper articles about the first townhall meetings about the EAR. It was one of these two meetings where the couple allegedly attended and were later attacked by the EAR. In retrospect, it is plausible that they attended the meeting but their encounter with the EAR had nothing to do with the townhall meeting. It is possible that the EAR never attended the meeting and it is coincidental that the couple who did attend the meeting later became victims. Just food for thought.

The first meeting took place on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1976. It was supposed to be a "crime prevention" seminar hosted by the Del Dayo Parents Club. Instead, it turned into an impromptu EAR townhall meeting because of the rumors circulating through the neighborhood about a serial rapist. After the news broke, the SCSD held a second meeting either or Nov. 4 or Nov. 5.

After the A&E Cold Case Files and the THS Investigates shows aired, the chances of posts by pranksters increased. Now that Det. Crompton's book has come out, the phenomenon of false confessors and false witnesses has also increased. There is still "hold back" information that only the investigators and the EAR know. Det. Crompton's book has only told half the story.

That is what gives credence to the "ear" and "EAR" profile. The first profile, created 9/29/00 was before the DNA link between the EAR crimes and the ONS crimes was even established. The term "Original Night Stalker" did not become popular until after the A&E Show aired. He was called the "Night Stalker" in the newspapers (before the term was applied to Richard Ramirez).

So it makes sense that he would use "ear."

email... did read it... and then didn't respond... doesn't necessarily mean they're
a modern day Jack The Ripper...

It could mean that they signed up for an account here for... who knows what reason...
and their interest waned... but the email they used to sign up with was still their
primary email...

And so when someone sent them an email... and they opened it and read it... and
perhaps did not respond to it... maybe all that means is that perhaps that person was just
too lazy to respond to an email sent by someone who was from some website that
he no longer had an interest in....

But based on some of the things that's being written about "ear" and "EAR"... it
does give one pause as to who the hell was behind those accounts....

Of all the places on the internet, this Message Board is a Mecca for all things

joined the A&E Message Board on dates that predate the EAR-ONS shows, the

Due to these reasons... I find it hard Mr. Lowercase "ear" and Mr. Capitalized "EAR"
may have any connection to this case....

If they both joined in say... 2005... 2006.... or even right now... different story,
perhaps...

The usernames are odd... to be sure... they are that... odd.... but considering
the dates in which both users signed up..... and the relation of those dates in relation
to the shows and the book and other relevant news media that has since come out
about this case.... I fail to see what relevancy the A&E Message Board has in regards
to Mr. EAR-ONS Pre-2003.

I just know I am missing something....... someone......... anyone.... give me
the missing link.... please....

Oh... one more thing....... although I can't speak for everyone... when it comes
to choosing usernames... some people might choose something blasé because they
either don't care.... or they're signing up for a forum or website that they know they
might possibly get disinterested in.... so they choose a name they don't care
about... they choose a name with indifference...

"ear" and "EAR" is the kind of username that someone might choose if they HAD
to choose a username and they didn't CARE about being unique... it's the kind of
username someone might choose because they HAVE to choose something in
order to be granted access to the message board/forum/website... whatever....

It is simple and easy to remember after all....

or a forum or a message board... and once admitted access to the board.... either
grow tired of it quickly or they realize after a time that the board is not for
them.............. and so, they leave the website/forum/message board behind
them like a distant memory and carry on with their life......

They could have been longtime lurkers who WANTED to post but just got shy,
nervous... and never worked up the nerve to post.... this message board has
seen a lot of examples of longtime lurkers who all of a sudden show up and
right out of the gate they're armed with months and months worth of information...
and they're ready to go...

Maybe Mr. Lowercase "ear" and Mr. Capitalized "EAR" were longtime lurkers who
never worked up the nerve to post on whatever message boards existed back then
from 2000 - 2002.

I know I am missing something, Mr. Archangel........ tell me........ what is it, sir?

The User ear and EAR
If these accounts pre-date the a+e network episode on the eponymous EAR....
it seems likely ear is actually e.a.r., as in the initials used by Eric Andrew Reiser et.al.
The same person might, forgetting their account, create a new account, such as, E.A.R.

As for stuff like OriginalNightStalker's you-tube channel, well, in college (and beyond for some) we sat around thinking up good band names. OriginalNightStalker's not a bad choice.

As for the "join" dates being dates of the EAR-ONS crimes--I'd only put weight to the dates pre-dating any major publishing of EAR activity articles. jmo

A: The A&E "Cold Case Files" Discussion Forum existed as early as 2000. The "Original Night Stalker" discussion thread was ADDED IN 2003 when the program aired for the first time. (That would be obvious as he created a User Profile on 9/29/00).

Related Question: Why would a serial rapist/murderer monitor a discussion board dedicated to publicizing cold case files?

A: The same reason that at-large criminals monitor America's Most Wanted and cringe. It is an avenue to bring publicity to the case which might help in solving it.

The Cold Case Files Discussion Board has been around at least since the year 2000 as mentioned in the previous post. If you were the EAR, where would you go to read about cold cases? This was basically the ONLY place where cold cases were being discussed. There is some indication that the "Original Night Stalker" production started in 2000 but got pulled. It may have been about the SoCal murders only. (That DNA connection was made in 1996).

What purpose would the EAR have to sit in on the town hall meeting unbeknownst to even law enforcement? Same motivation here. To gather intel. To find out how much law enforcement actually knows. And to show how stupid LE is because he's been right here under their noses (again) and no one knows it. (Except TLS). It is exactly what the EAR has done in the past and what he could be expected to do.

If he is alive, and I believe he is, he most certainly lurks here. He may have posted under a different user name (to amuse himself). He could not post under either "ear" or "EAR" because law enforcement would have had some justification to traced his IP back to a source. He knows what happened to BTK. That is why whoever created the user profiles could not and would not reply to private messages.

Relevancy

More publicity brought to the case means a higher chance of a resolution. That is why criminals hate America's Most Wanted. "Unsolved Mysteries", MSNBC Investigates, A&E Cold Case Files and THS Investigates each have moved this case forward, in terms of disseminating case info, witnesses coming forward and suspects being named. Without the publicity, this case would have long been forgotten.

This was the only place discussing cold cases. I think UM and MI both were broadcast in 2001. CCF followed. The EAR ALWAYS followed his own press. If he's alive, he's following it now and HE'S CRINGING.

Where are you going when you die? Oh, of course, you probably don't believe in God. Actually, even the devil believes in God. Well, what if you are wrong, and there IS a God? Even you might have some good in you. I noticed how you were more gentle (and the word tender) was used with your younger victims. You never killed a child. You let some people go. Why don't you just do the right thing and confess and take your medicine. You might be able to like yourself a little bit. You might be able to come to grips with your past. Possibly you are sorry. God forgives those who confess and ask for forgiveness no matter how bad they have been but you need to confess and face justice. Why don't you consider doing the right thing? Or how about a half-way measure. How about writing a letter to LE and the families, explaining if you are sorry, and explaining you have changed, why don't you do "something" good.

Per the Official Scrabble World List, there are 1016 proper three-letter words in the English language. Let's look at one row of 24 of them, incorporating the word "EAR":

Of those, I'd say only 13 or 14 are words you'd find in any standard English-speaker's vocabulary. By that, I can improperly estimate that there are about 592 three-letter words in the average English speaker's vocabulary, barring acronyms like ATM or ESP. One must also consider monograms.

"Ear" is one of the more common words in the English language (more people know what an ear is than an elk or an eel), and for a message board handle, it could imply an intention, on the part of the subscriber, to maybe just be a lurker and not actively write, or any number of other things. I think the initial "ear" profile is nothing of significance.

However, the capitalized "EAR" profile, though I don't think it's as concrete a connector as Archangel believes, is definitely worthy of at least some scrutiny. The odds are something quite slimmer than even 1-in-365 that the creation of the username "EAR" would take place on an EAR/ONS-significant date such as the day of the Maggiore homicides.

I would be predisposed to believe that the "ear" and "EAR" user profile was created by "the EAR" (sort of like counting blue cars). One thing that needs to be factored into the equation is that neither "ear" or "EAR" has ever posted (or responded to PM's). You do not need a user profile to be able to lurk here and read posts. That's a waste of time and energy. You only need a user name to post. So why create a user name necessary to post -and then don't post?

It's the EAR, IMHO. Town hall meeting all over again.

(When I have some free time, I think I will peruse some other discussion boards and see how many times I find "ear" or "EAR" as a user profile that has never been used once created.)

Early Morning RapistThere were several investigators who believed that the EAR was a continuation of an unsolved series of rapes committed by a perpetrator known as the "Early Morning Rapist." Not much is known about this series of rapes committed between 1972 and 1974. What intrigued me was the composite of the EMR as compared to the San Ramon composite of the EAR.

The first ones are labeled but then there are others that are not. Can you tell where these other composites came from? Can you tell me which one is the San Ramon sketch?

Also the patches with the dragons were new to me and I think really add to the probability that your theory of the Maggiori killings is right. Thanks!

This is the San Ramon sketch. There is not a lot of information about who provided it. I thought it was from a witness in San Ramon. There is some indication that the victim provided it based on a person she saw in the neighborhood before the EAR attack so it's reliability (like the enhanced composite sketch from the Maggiore case) is tentative. But there are similarities between this composite sketch and the sketch of the Early Morning Rapist.

It is one thing to plan the perfect crime, but it's another to be able to carry it out. I do not remember anything about the EMR. That is mainly because the newspapers did not give him the same coverage as they did the EAR. So far, I cannot find anything in the papers on the EMR. The link that AT provided says that the EMR committed at least 36 attacks in the Sacramento area between 1974 and 1976. I cannot confirm any of this. That secret witness article is the only thing I've seen on the EMR back from the 70's.

That is part of the difficulty of identifying the EAR/ONS. We do not know where he made all his mistakes. Visalia is a possibility. However, Sacramento is now a possibility with the EMR information (and composite sketch).

For people to keep saying "No one has ever seen EAR" perplexes me. All of the individual sketches bear a striking resemblence to eachother. At least in my opinion. That leads me to believe that the numerous independent witnesses that gave information so the sketches could be drawn cannot all be wrong. They have basically drawn the same guy over and over.. g

No one has ever seen
Gotta say, in Visalia, there were sightings of what was thought to be he VR, in the Snelling's neighborhood, prior to Snelling's murder. There are other sightings in the area known as Oak Estates, which is south of Tulare Avenue, and south of Snelling's home. Several homes were hit in the Oak Estates area. One of the homes hit also had threatening phone calls. Then, there are even more sightings around College Avenue, a culdesac, across the football field of C.O.S. If anyone is interested, enter College of the Sequoia, Visalia on mapquest. Go west of Mooney Blvd. You will find Woodland Avenue (n/s) Campus (e/w) and Redwood & Whitney...four-five blocks west of College of Sequoias. The sightings were all similar in nature, and obviously the footprints in Visalia matched EAR/ONS as far as size. Also, VR was thought to be left handed, as was EAR/ONS, right?

Questions

Do you agree that EAR could not be VR and EMR too? Would have to be one or the other?

Did VR do the dish trick by putting dishes on door handles? If that is true that is pretty strong indication that he is EAR. dengas said there were lots of sightings and a threatening phone call before the Snelling break in, isn't that more consistent with EAR?


Also, I personally don't see the connection between "all" of the sketches. I do between clusters of sketches. On the board where guessting posted all the sketches, the bottom 4 and the two on the right on the row above are obviously the same person.

I wonder if 5 of these sketches were drawn at the same time with the same witness or were they drawn with multiple witnesses at different times. If only one witness it would account for the similarities and I wouldn't look at that cluster of sketches more seriously than the others but if the sketches were from different witnesses and different times, then I would have to say that those bottom sketches must be very accurate.

The one that appears older (the one on the bottom far right)... was that just the same sketch but time-enhanced to show what he might look like? or was that another actual sighting after the Cruz murder.

The following is an excerpt from "SUDDEN TERROR".

Chapter 33. Pages 267 - 269

In 1976, the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office and City Police investigated
more than three hundred rapes. Estimates vary, however unreported
rapes may fall somewhere between six hundred and twenty-five hundred
annually. Official statistics show that there is a rape almost every
day. Although investigators denounce the figure as over inflated, the
Sacramento Rape Crisis Center estimates that seven other rapes daily
go unreported.

The U.S. Law Enforcement Assistance Administration surveyed
thirteen cities in 1975. They determined that in some urban areas, as
many as 66 percent of all rapes were never reported. And of those that
are reported, most are never solved. Only 44 percent of the three hundred
and twenty-three forcible rapes reported in Sacramento County
were solved.

Sacramento isn’t alone. In 1976, nine thousand five hundred and
fifty-two forcible rapes were reported in California. Only 45.7 percent
were cleared. This calculates to only four thousand three hundred and
seventy rapes solved. Although unsolved rapes remain high, media concentration
on a single rapist can obscure the total picture and create fear
in the minds of the entire population.

Although the East Area Rapist commanded the attention of the media,
he was not the most active rapist in the area. In a twelve month period,
EAR had raped twenty-two times. Approximately three hundred
other rapes had occurred during the same time period.

Over a four year period ending in 1976, a rapist identified by law enforcement
as the “Early Morning Rapist” attacked and violated at least
thirty-six women. He disappeared in 1976 and was never identified.
Although a number of the Early Morning Rapist’s attacks occurred in
the same unincorporated area as the East Area Rapist attacks, the offenses
were not widely reported and very little panic ensued.

It is felt that possibly the absence of publicity with the Early Morning
Rapist was due to the fact that many victims were on welfare, divorced,
and from lower income groups, therefore lacking political clout.
During the East Area Rapist’s attacks, another serial rapist, nicknamed
“Wooley” due to his wet wool odor, was invading Sacramento
apartment complexes. Wooley’s M.O. was to place the victim in a closet
and tell them to count to one hundred backwards before emerging. In
one rape, he tried to confuse law enforcement into believing EAR had
committed the rape. He placed dishes on the victim’s seventeen year old
brother’s back and then after the rape, returned to his familiar M.O.
He placed the victim in a closet. Still wanting to “confuse” law enforcement,
he ordered the victim to count backward from fifty. It took the
Wooley Task Force less than a month to make an arrest.
Sacramento was not unique in being unfortunate to have serial rapists
terrorizing communities.

During this same period the Los Angeles Police Department was
actively pursuing the “Pillowcase Rapist,” a psychopath who had raped
approximately fifty-four women in South Central Los Angeles. His
trademark was placing a pillowcase over the heads of his victims. In
January of 1997, two of the Pillowcase Rapist’s victims traveled to Indiana
for the start of a trial to put Reginald Muldrew, age forty-nine,
back in prison. Muldrew, the Pillowcase Rapist, was investigated in as
many as two hundred sex crimes in the Los Angeles area from 1976
through 1978. He was released from a California prison in December
1995 after serving sixteen years of a twenty-five year sentence. At the
time of his release, he was determined to still be a danger, but had completed
his sentence, shortened for good behavior. On August 5, 1997,
he attacked a Gary, Indiana woman.

In Berkeley, California, a Rapist Task Force was searching for a serial
rapist known as “Stinky” due to his foul breath, body odor, and
oil and gasoline scent. Stinky raped at least forty-seven women before
leaving Berkeley to continue his career in the nearby city of Oakland.
Stinky was never caught, although Berkeley P.D. investigators were
sure they knew who he was. The Alameda County District Attorney’s
office refused to file charges due to “insufficient evidence.”

The “Car Key Rapist” attacked more than forty women in Los Angeles
in 1977 before being caught. He earned his nickname by raping
women in their cars then fleeing with the car keys, dropping them a
block away.

San Diego police arrested the “East San Diego Rapist” after thirty
women had been raped.

Police in Dallas, Texas investigated the “Friendly Rapist” for two
years before finally arresting him, but not before he had violated more
than fifty women. He was nicknamed “Friendly” because victims described
him as “polite.” Friendly was a former journalist who learned
police tactics while covering the crime beat for a newspaper.
EAR remained on everyone’s mind throughout the summer months,
not because of continued attacks, as there were none, but through the
articles that appeared weekly and sometimes daily, in one or both of
the major Sacramento newspapers. Many of these were anti-law enforcement
due to their inability to capture the rapist. Rumors that the
rapist was known to investigators as a police officer and therefore had
not been arrested because officers were reluctant to turn in “one of their
own” was alluded to in several articles.

Although thinking about it further, I doubt there would still be evidence available as it was so long ago. It was probably tossed as, I believe, the statute of limitations was only 6 years for rape in California at the time.

I agree with you--he started off young, and he had to have some experience prior to 18 June 1976. I think that the nucleus of it all is his catburglar skills. He had to have been an experienced, accomplished catburglar long before he started his career as the EAR--and/or the EMR and VR. $20 says our perp had a juvenile record, and, that his name is sitting in a file somewhere in Sacramento. Somebody this prolific couldn't be perfect all the time.

The End of EAR A/EAR B

Before investigators finally released the results of the DNA tests connecting the murders of Cheri Domingo and Greg Sanchez to the notorious EAR, I had to deal with the lunacy of the EAR A/EAR B theory. I went into great detail outlining why the Goleta cases (the first failed attack, Offerman/Manning and Sanchez Domingo) were ALL committed by the EAR. And yet logic and reason did not prevail with the author of the EAR A/EAR B theory.

I dredge this back up because potential witnesses were being thrown off and confused by the EAR A/EAR B Theory and asking me if it were true. (I still get asked that question even now). Putting that assinine theory out on this board as if it were fact did untold damage to anyone attempting to see if they had any information pertaining to the EAR/ONS case. They were left with the impression that the Goleta cases were not connected to the EAR/ONS.

More damaging than the EAR A/EAR B theory were the investigators who suffered from "linkage blindness." Because they were unable to see the M.O./Signature link between the cases, the thrust of their investigative efforts were going up blind alleys looking for the elusive EAR B (who never existed in the first place) or trying to pin the Goleta cases on Brett Glasby.

Here are some selected quotes:

From August 1981:

“There is a person out there killing people,” said Sgt. William Baker, head of the
sheriff’s major crime division. “We believe there is a strong possibility that the three
(Santa Barbara cases) are connected.”
Regarding the Orange County and Ventura murders, Baker said:
“I would say there is a strong suspicion (That they are linked to the Santa
Barbara cases) but to a lesser degree because I’m not as familiar with those
jurisdictions’ cases.”
But authorities in Ventura and Orange County are skeptical that the murders in
those jurisdictions are linked to the Santa Barbara cases.
“We see no connection between the killings,” said Ventura Police Sgt. Larry
White, in charge of the Ventura homicide investigation. “We don’t know what if any
link there might be.”
He contended that Santa Barbara County authorities “jumped the gun” with their
announcement of a suspected link and said there had been no communication
between the two departments immediately prior to that statement that a link is
suspected.
Similarly, Orange County authorities are unconvinced.

This quote is ironic because Sgt. Bill Baker did not see a connection between Offerman/Manning and the EAR back in 1979.

From October 2000:

While Santa Barbara sheriff's detectives say there may be a connection between
the Goleta killings, they are not convinced the same person is responsible for the
others.
"There was DNA evidence in our investigation that does not match the DNA from
their killer," said Lt. Mike Burridge, spokesman for the Santa Barbara County
Sheriff's Department. "We obviously would like nothing more than to solve these
homicides. There are still surviving victims, and surviving and grieving family
members who would like to see these cases resolved."
But while there are similarities among the cases, there are just as many
inconsistencies, Burridge said.

And here is an explanation of the nonsensical EAR A/EAR B theory:

In a nutshell, this theory posits that there were a minimum of two criminals who committed the EAR crimes. The first was the same person later linked by DNA with crimes in Contra Costa County and in Ventura and Orange county. I call him EAR-A. The second person was more rash and less deliberate and was the original EAR who emerged in Rancho Cordova in June 1976. I refer to him as EAR-B. Not all of the EAR-B crimes, however, may have been committed by EAR-B. Several of them are even more unique and may have been the work of others.

I pray to God that no one ever asks me about this mind-numbing waste-of-time theory ever again.

This has been one of the greatest hindrances to this case. By not seeing the cases as linked to the EAR, investigators robbed themselves of developing any real leads as far back as 1979. And they were told the cases were linked by Det. Crompton and Sgt. Bevins. They chose to ignore what these two veteran investigators told them. And who knows if leads were ignored that pointed to someone from the Sacramento area. And who knows what leads could have been developed if Sacramento was told the the cases were definitively linked.

Now, with the DNA results in hand, hopefully we can move forward with both a new understanding and appreciation of how the 3 Goleta cases fit into the larger puzzle. My hat is off to the dedicated investigators in Santa Barbara who took away any doubt of a connection so that we are all now looking for the same person. (And not some non-existent fantasy called EAR B).

There is only one DNA profile of one perp. And hopefully, if there is anyone either in Sacramento or Santa Barbara with case information, they will come forward with the lead that will close this case. That would be a wonderful "miracle" on the anniversary of the loss of Janelle Cruz.

when I first learned about these crimes, that portion of JJ's site (EAR A/EAR B) was just plain confusing to me. Obviously there were other rapists operating in Sacramento at the same time, but still--not with those similar characteristics.

You know that you and your family are always in my thoughts and prayers. Of all the cases, hearing about what happened to Janelle brought me to tears. (I consider myself to be pretty emotionless). But her story has touched me deeply. She was so young and so beautiful and suffered so much in her 18 short years. And I know that she would have contributed much to this world if she were here with us. Even in death, she is still touching people's lives.

I do this for all of the victims and their families. But it is Janelle's story that has so moved me and connected me back to my humanity. Life has a way of hardening you and making you not care. What Janelle and all of the other victim's have suffered has made me care. Knowing that justice has not been served all these many years makes me angry. And when people ask me why do I care?

I ask them, "why don't you care?"

I wish I could hear the other recordings and read the other poems/writings of Mr. EAR-ONS.... maybe those will be released soon....... there might be a a cornucopia of evidence in these other recordings and writings... there is a "Lenny" or a "Charles" out there who will either hear and/or read this information that has not been disclosed....... and this "Lenny" or "Charles" will play connect-the-dots.... and then you'll know the name of the man who got away with all those crimes many, many years ago, you know what I mean?

This case needs a Donald and Bettye Harden... someone who sees something no one else can..... also, I wonder whatever happened to Mr. Jonkat..........

It is critically important that we keep a clear distinction between case facts and case fiction. EAR A/EAR B is case fiction. TK/EAR/ONS/etc. is case fiction. That theory will be put to rest once DK's DNA is tested. (We're too busy right now testing real suspect's DNA. Maybe when AK gets the time, he can have DK's DNA tested).

I have had similar situations where people ask why dont you just let this go. I feel the same way you do. I cant give up and why now because it is uncomfortable to hear about it or think about? We believe the offender disguised his motivation for the crimes because he did not want the murders linked together. Manipulating lawenforcement into investigating the crimes separately would decrease the total information collected and therefore would decrease the likelihood of the cases being solved.

Does this sound like an offender that would be stupid enough to bring his own dog to a murder scene in the same town that he lived in???

Research has provided information on the likely characteristics and traits of this type of offender. He would likely have been described by those who knew him as being neat, articulate, intelligent and organized. He also would likely havebeen described as rigid, arrogant, domineering and possessing an attitude of superiority.

He would be further described as manipulative, a chronic liar, and unremorseful. The offender was very methodical. Your offender when in a relationship, would be able to come and go as he pleased, being the dominantand aggressive member of the relationship.

If the two sources are right and the 3-toed dog was located, then it appears as though the EAR did bring the dog along as a ruse. It was someone else's dog and he took it along to confuse investigators.

I just have not been able to confirm that Woofy was, in fact, located. The 3-toes on one paw is a pretty unique identifier. (Colleen Cason says that it was a white German Shepherd which, if true, makes it even more unique).

The two sources will not provide the name of the owner of the dog so I can't follow up to determine for myself what is true.

If the dog did belong to the EAR, then all that is needed to be done is identify the dog and then you can identify the EAR. I'll try again to get the name of the owner of the dog.

Dog -- confuse the investigators
Archangel, If ONS borrowed someone's dog, do you imagine he rode a bicycle to the Offerman-Manning condo with the dog alongside, or are you picturing him on foot? Personally, knowing what the surrounding area looks like as far as folliage, I see him easily disappearing -- once again jumping a fence to the greenbelt behind their condo.

As for borrowing someone's dog: This guy was either a dog trainer/handler or the dog knew him well. I can't see a creep in a ski mask waltzing into a back yard and a random German Shepard just coming along with him for the ride and sitting silently while he attacks and shoots people. German Shepards (especially if kept on hand as a guard dog) can be pretty aggressive. ONS is lucky he didn't get this throat torn out. So, I'm going with the theory, the dog knew him and knew him well. As for the bike in relation to O/M, we don't know ONS stole it. And even if he did, if he was staying nearby, it would take little effort to take the dog back home and then go steal the bike for whatever reason.... I think he took woofy with him to the crime scene, took woofy back home and then stole the bike and ditched it in order to throw off the cops.... I don't think he considered the dog tracks would be noticed at all.

Why the dog...
I think the reason for the dog was to quell suspicions while entering and exiting a localized crime scene area he already screwed up at. Remember, ONS left three witnesses (one of which was an FBI guy) during the October attack. Goleta was looking for a lone prowler dressed in dark clothes and might be on a bike. The small neighborhood obviously heard of the attack and in December, a dude on a bike or on foot, alone, dressed in dark clothes could have aroused concerns from anyone who might have caught a glimpse of him. So talking a dog along makes him look less threatening and certainly less suspicious..."hey man, I'm just walking my dog since he's been kooked up in the house all day." The fact that the dog was white makes the dog even more obvious to any passerby in the middle of the night.

And I don't think the dog was his nor does he need to be some sort of dog trainer/handler. If ONS changed his shoes and mask for crimes, he doesn't want things connected to him, and a very particular dog breed stands out. The dog just needed to be older and approachable. If it truly had three toes on one foot, chances are it was an older shepherd. Somewhere along his route, all ONS had to do was peek into a backyard and if a dog comes up to him sniffing, licking and wagging its tail, all ONS had to do was pet the dog and give him a treat and the dog would follow. Yes, German Shepherds are protective and all, but an old, nice and approachable shepherd is not really hard to find in backyards. ONS doesn't need to be an LE dog handler, he just needed to be careful.
