I've been reading Detective Shelby's book, one aspect of the investigation that jumps out at me is the lack of footprints inside the homes. Where are the footprints?
In multiple crime sites they noticed footprints in the victim's yard and adjacent properties (along with empty cans of Coors apparently)... sneaker print with herringbone pattern, waffle-stompers, etc. We know EAR prowled these neighborhoods extensively on foot including the times he attacked.
He's left footprints outside the home in a number of instances. Maybe I'm missing something somewhere, but where are the footprints inside the home? Walking around inside the house after walking around neighborhoods in the middle of the night, you would think there would be footprints left behind on the floor, in the carpeting, etc. Did he remove his shoes somewhere before entering the homes at the time of the attack? Seems like that would be inefficient and conflicting with his MO where he seems to quickly disappear once he finally chooses to exit the victim's home.
I don't know but in order to walk around without leaving footprints, it seems like:
- no shoes were worn inside, or shoes were covered (did utility workers practice covering their shoes during home visits back then, the way mattress delivery guys do nowadays?)
- was he avoiding rainy nights so that he wouldn't track mud around? That would make a lot of sense and speaks to his activities being preplanned/scheduled.
- was he sock footed during the attacks? If so, that seems to be at odds with his ability to run through backyards and leap fences without injuring his feet.
- Maybe he avoided carpeted areas and then wiped down any footprints from the hard floors before leaving.
Just something I was thinking about...
