Is it safe to post about a POI? (update: cleared by DNA)

Here is what I can say for now:

My POI is alive, and currently between 60-70 years of age. I can connect him to several areas where the crimes occurred. I have thoroughly read all of the psychological profiles, including the FDLE profile (which was very thorough), and my POI matches these very closely. He is the right height, shoe size, and eye color. He has connections to military, law enforcement, and forensics. Can tie multiple knots. His pictures look similar to some of the sketches. There is one sketch that looks exactly like him. He was very athletic in his youth. He has displayed behaviors that match with things EAR did. He also has a history of mental illness, but I am not sure what year this arose.  

I have many more details about his life that fit with the profile of EAR, but I am hesitant to post too much.

Maybe I would feel comfortable discussing this with a specific and trustworthy person? What about Drifter, Quester, or Michelle McNamara (of True Crime Diary)? I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this. Thank you for your time.

Take a look at the contact lists which abound on this and other websites. Give your POI's name to them. In other words, call the cops.

Welcome Geometry, there are a few basic things you can do without giving away any sensitive identifiers. First check shoe length of your POI: the EAR wore tennis shoes between 11 1/4 and 11 1/2 inches long. Also check if he was a student in Universities/Colleges located near to the target areas: the EAR attacks map onto the academic calendar. Then have a good look at photos of your POI from 1976 then take a good look at the open-faced balaclava composite created from EAR attack #15 (see attachment). This is the only sketch that shows the face of the EAR for certain. Finally find out what your POI was doing between 1981 and 1986, because the EAR appears to have refrained from offending during this time period. If your POI fits all these criteria, speak to the police. If you want to discuss things further, there is a retired member of this forum who knows a lot more about the case than I do - I can put you in touch with them.

Who is the 'retired member of the forum'?

It seems strange to guide people away from this forum - there are plenty of extremely knowledgeable posters here and I know I'd like to know more about this POI...

Also I wouldn't rule out a POI for not being a college or uni student - although it's a good possibility, we don't know for sure that EAR was a student.

I don't know how to run a background check other than some online services which may be flimsy, but to find old court records you will want to visit the various counties in California Superior Court pages. For instances, Sacramento Superior Court criminal cases go back only to 1986 but still a good place to check and see what your POI has been up to. Sacramento also offers archived civils cases going back forever this is good to determine divorces, and other civil disputes, which  POI may have  been a party too. Most of the Ca countries Courts are online with this information, but they all charge. The best bet for records regarding where he may have lived would be Phone directories which Ancestry.com has some but not all the countries. They do have Sacramento minus Rancho Cordova for most of the EAR's period. Good luck. Hope that helps and if you don't mind me asking which drawing does your POI look like?

You're welcome geometry: with regard to the shoe size issue, I was referring to length of the shoe print in inches, not the sizing chart. There is a lot of inaccuracy in shoe print sizes early on, but in the case of the Offerman/Manning murders the police precisely measured the shoe prints left behind by the EAR and they were 11 7/16 inches in length. Therefore if your POI is the EAR, he should wear tennis shoes of this length or very close to it.

Gemo, thanks for posting thesketches, interesting because a former poster who may have had a run in with EAR picked the same sketches.   If you don't mind me asking how did this poi get on your radar?

While we are discussing POIs how about those chronics who still think Ted Kaczynski had something to do with The Stalker crimes? Please enough already! Firstly they have his DNA so logic would deduce that a link would have been determined. Additionally Ted was a loner living in essentially a wooden shed in Montana. Now we are going to think he is going to invade homes and commit rape and murder?

Kaczynski was a brilliant maniac! He was a killer but did it from afar. The profile of this man in NO way matches someone as brazen as this offender. How this even was possibly linked is mystifying. Maybe because of the proximity during the time while he was at Cal Berkley. But this was even earlier than the first VR attacks? I keep hearing this and while it is good to put forth plausible theories Kaczynski was no way VR or EAR. BTW talk about " A mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste!" his PH.D thesis in Mathematics was so complex even his instructor couldn't grasp or figure it out. The instructor admitted "8 or 10 people in The U.S. could really appreciate its true meaning." How does a man who went to Harvard at 16 become a bomb maker looking to maim and kill people?

On another topic I did consult with someone with a decent knowledge of forensics. Even second cousins can now be linked through DNA. But here is the question. You know how someone can take a swab of their DNA and submit it to these 3rd party for profit companies who often can determine a tree of their descendants? I wonder if someone in LE submitted his DNA to these agencies? I mean they didn't have to say who's DNA it was. Why not? Yes there are certain samples that come back with only small details regarding location of their descendants.

My point is these are corporations or for profit entities. If they can tell something about the donor specifics what the hell has LE not figured out yet?

I was thinking the same, and that all you had to do was plug in the EAR DNA from the A&E program. Profiles are shown at different parts of the show with Hong and others. Bill Kurtis says in the narrative "this profile belongs to.." while a profile scrolls across the screen. Then reality set in and I realized he meant "this profile" as the EARS not the one scrolling, and I'm sure the profile logged into the screen with Hong is also just for theatrics.

These types of crimes attract more than their fair share of cranks to become involved. That is not a comment about anyone specifically on here.

Even if you Google "Original Night Stalker" or "EAR" there is Ted's mug on full display. I am like what? Here is a theory that will really rattle civil liberty groups. Is sounds far fetched but after this case I am willing to do anything to ensure it never happens again.

I would be in favor of every child born cataloging their DNA profile which would be kept under the strictest of confidence and security. Yes there is always the possibility of hackers but ask yourself, "If you are an honest innocent person why in the hell would you be concerned about someone seeing a code and your name?" I know police framing, privacy but ask yourself this. What are the alternatives? We already know! How many cold homicides exist where LE has a DNA profile but no match? If it saves just 1 life is it worth it? One human life. Ask yourself this question and ponder.

I would gladly submit my DNA in a New York Minute!!

The concern should not be for what good a government could do with our DNA profiles but what is the worst thing a government could do with our DNA profiles. 

What do you think the Nazi's would have done with everyone's DNA profiles if they had been able to sort people with DNA?  The concern should not be over an occasional homicide it should be over what can happen to the masses.

Well yes there was a very horrible time in the world where singling out people because of religion and race occurred. Yes I have considered this. Look I make the same argument with liberals trying to disarm the public. The reason my father fought The Nazis in WW2 and oppressive governments such as in The Philippines when giving citizens 2 weeks to turn in their guns or face the death penalty is scary to me. Can it happen again? Well I certainly hope not and if you are implying that a certain class of people would be singled out by government tyranny is beyond disturbing. But I agree there is a precident so I understand your concern. Again I don't have all of the answers but their are cold blooded killers such as this lunatic that killed and still perhaps enjoys freedom as you and me today. This is a travesty of justice. I will say this the government already knows more about us than we can ever imagine. Would a DNA code make a difference? Well again good point and it is something just thinking outside the box that is concerning. I am just tired of psychopaths getting away with murder ok? It sickens me to no end!

Like recently I was told in order to go to California and carry my firearm legally I would have to fill out some forms. It would get done but will take a few weeks. This is because I am a non-resident of CA. Are you kidding me? I can legally carry a firearm on a commercial aircraft but to carry within my own country I need to go through another bureaucratic process. How much does that cost the taxpayer in California and can the money be spent on let's say finding this madman?  Look I am for reasoned gun control to an extent and don't want criminals near guns nor purchase them. I rip The NRA for lax polices on gun control we need better screening, training and checks for mental illness. But law abiding citizens need to defend themselves against the rapists and murderers in this country. The government is NOT taking my guns and I am not worried about it nor do I lose sleep over it. Again it just goes to show you how ridiculous our laws can be regarding certain states and what is going on here?.

But I get your concern about your point of the government's perhaps over stepping boundaries. Now they want Apple to unlock the San Bernardino's shooter's iPhone. How this crazy man got a gun in the first place is mind boggling in itself! People ask me if am a Republican or a Democrat. I am an independent for a reasoned approach to anything that makes us safer as a nation. I don't take sides and I don't have an agenda. I am for victims rights and to hopefully prevent another Stalker.
