Blood Types and Non Sectors

Regarding non-sectors and blood type. See below text regarding the Andre Chikatilo, one of the worst serial killers in history, who started his murders spree in 1978, and who was initially let go by police because his blood type did not match the suspect blood type profile.

"In 1983, Moscow detective Major Mikhail Fetisov was seconded to Rostov to assume control of the investigation. He recognised that a serial killer might be on the loose, and assigned a specialist forensic analyst, Victor Burakov, to head the investigation in the Shakhty area. The investigation centred on known sex offenders, and the mentally ill, but such were the interrogation methods of the local police that they regularly solicited false confessions from prisoners, leaving Burakov sceptical of the majority of these “confessions”. Progress was slow, especially as, at that stage, not all of the victim’s bodies had been discovered, so the true body count was unknown to the police. With each body, the forensic evidence mounted, and police were convinced that the killer had the blood type AB, as evidenced by the semen samples collected from a number of crime scenes. Samples of identical grey hair were also retrieved.

When a further 15 victims were added during the course of 1984, police efforts were increased drastically, and they mounted massive surveillance operations that canvassed most local transport hubs. Chikatilo was arrested for behaving suspiciously at a bus station at this time, but again avoided suspicion on the murder charges, as his blood type did not match the suspect profile, but he was imprisoned for 3 months for a number of minor outstanding offences.

What was not realised at the time was that Chikatilo’s actual blood type, type A, was different to the type found in his other bodily fluids (type AB), as he was a member of a minority group known as “non-secretors”, whose blood type cannot be inferred by anything other than a blood sample. As police only had a sample of semen, and not blood, from the crime scenes, Chikatilo was able to escape suspicion of murder."

Very interesting.

So now we have an historical precedent for saying that the East Area Rapist's blood type might be incorrect, given the existing profile. I have always suspected there could be something wrong with that profile, and that some suspect in Sac was released in error.

I wonder if LE is aware of this historical case ...

I thought EAR's blood type was determined from blood when he was cut during an attack... I might be mistaken though...

If not, then this could indeed open up a whole new can of worms!

 also the blood was assumed to ne ears only cause it didnt match vics not cause a police  witnessed ear nleeding it  unfortunately we dont know how much blood was found who did testing im assuming there was not much ....they can tell a persons a non secretor by body fluids can they tell a nonsecretor by just blood or do they need body fluids to test for antigens?

20% of the population are non-secretors.

Ok, 34% of Americans have type A+ Blood, and 20% are non-secretors, so people with the same make up as EAR would be 6.8% of the population. Please check my math.

Regardless of secretor status, ALL suspects should be swabbed for a DNA match.....

-Interesting thing i found out from a biologist is that nonsecretor status is independent of blood type. in other words if a person with A blood is nonsecretor that doesnt mean he had to have a non-secretor parent with A blood one parent could be a different blood type say O NONSECRETOR ...Example Parent 1 blood type O NONSECRETOR Parent 2 A SECRETOR well any NONSECRETOR offspring nonsecretor Also You guys probably all know this but its news to me

Ok i am going to copy paste my email with biologist about secretor types  Its actually  well for me  complicated ...i have no business talking a subect i know nothing about ,It makes me look like and feel like i'm talking s**t  ..Why do that if i don't have to ??..I love facts and getting my story straight !


the status of secretor vs non-secretor has nothing to do with the blood type. In other words, inheriting the trait to be a secretor/non-secretor is not linked to inheriting alleles that determine blood type. Therefore, yes, it is possible for a non-secretor offspring to carry a different blood type from a parent who shows the non-secretor trait.

The non-secretor trait is from a recessive gene. In order to actually see the recessive trait in the offspring (e.g. to be a non-secretor offspring), the offspring must inherit the recessive non-secretor gene from both parents. In your example, parent 1 (a non-secretor) has two recessive non-secretor genes and will definitely pass one onto the offspring. Since the offspring in your example is also non-secretor, Parent 2 must have one dominant gene (secretor) and one recessive gene (non-secretor) but will pass on the recessive gene to it's offspring.

e blood type (A vs O), however, is based on the sharing of different alleles. If you receive A type from your mother and B type from your father, you will express both alleles and have blood type AB. However, if you receive a recessive O allele from only one of your parents, then the A or B received from the other parents is dominant. If you receive a recessive O allele from both parents, then you will have O type blood. This link provides an easy to read guide to understanding how blood type is inherited 

in your example, since one parent has blood type O and other A, the genotype of the offspring will be AO with a blood type of A (A is dominant over the O allele).
