I saw this in the poll section, and thought the discussion could be broken out into a discussion thread. As usual, Nick picks up on some important and often-overlooked details and understands that there might be some significance to it.
I got your info Nick! Sit tight, this is going to be a long one, lol
Well, here's the short version: there WAS a bearded suspect in the Winterbrook assault, and he was NEVER CLEARED!
Now here's the LONG version: The Winterbrook assault in Orangevale was on May 5th in the very early morning hours. Well, on May 2nd a neighbor was opening the garage door for her husband, and as she did, she spotted a car parked across the street with a man in the driver’s seat and no other occupants. It seemed a little suspicious, so she attempted to get his license plate number but the man drove off. Thinking this might be significant, LE put her and her sister, who had also seen the man, under hypnosis where they were able to give a description and recall the license plate. They described the driver as a white male, late 20’s, fair complexion, dark-brown, should-length hair, with no mustache but a full well-trimmed short beard. His eyes were described as large and attractive. His arm had been hanging outside the door window and was described as having very little hair, but the hair that was visible was lighter in color than the hair on his head. His build was medium to slender and all they could see of his clothing was a well-worn white t-shirt. The car was square in body style. It was a worn pinkish gray with a white undercoat beginning to show through. There was a lot of chrome on the front end of the car. It had single headlights. The tail lights were single, small, round and protruding out from the body of the car. A recessed area on the body stretched from one tail light to the other. The paint on the front license plate frame was pretty much gone. Still visible on it thought was the word “Mercury,” and the license plate was an old black and yellow California license place. They couldn’t recall the first letter, but the others were HD-951. They felt that the missing letter was J, or maybe even a I, T, or L. All possible combinations of letters and numbers were run through the DMV, and they got a hit. It came back to 1962 Ford.
A picture of a 1962 Ford was shown to the witness and it definitely wasn’t the car she had seen. The 11 year-old son of the witness heard the description and said that the man sounded exactly the man who drove the ice cream truck in their area. The driver of this truck was found and he did indeed match the description. In addition to that, he had green eyes that were very large and dark, a full Van Dyke style beard that was about about four inches in length, and he also had a very thin mustache with the ends drooping down. He worked for Mells Ice cream Company on Dry Creek Rd in Sacramento, and LE confirmed with his employer that he worked there. LE contacted him at his home in Orangevale, where he lived with his wife on Alma Mesa and drove a maroon 1960 Chevrolet with CA license plate AJD 777. His license claimed he was 6 feet tall and 143 lbs, with a Lincoln address. He did not appear to be more than 5’10” and was about 140 lbs with a thin build. He had A+ blood type. He was wearing a size 9 tennis shoe with a zigzag pattern that was nearly gone due to wear. Unfortunately, this suspect has never been eliminated as being the EAR. He left CA in the late 70s or early 80s, LE lost track of him (he now lives in Arkansas).

The day before the Merlindale assault, a woman on a bike in Rancho Cordova saw ta man in a white compact station wagon, he followed the woman even when she had met two other friends. The subject driving the car had a full beard from ear to ear on one of the passes by the women and then on another the beard was gone. Shelby stated "the bearded description closely matched a possible suspect in the Winterbrook assault." When did LE ever say EAR had a beard? When was this ever put out? It's very interesting to me that a bearded suspect is a casual mention in this chapter of the book.I got your info Nick! Sit tight, this is going to be a long one, lol
