I'm Mr. S's daughter (Mr. S was possibly the 6th grade teacher of the EAR?).
I posted some of this in response to a much earlier post.. then realized I should probably start a new post if I want more people to see it.
I was listening to a Case File Podcast two days ago, about the EAR case. Since it took place in my hometown, Rancho Cordova, I was a little more interested than I normally am in True Crime podcasts. I can't believe I never heard of the East Side Rapist until listening to that podcast. It's a scary story, but it was extra scary to me, as there were uncanny similarities between some of the things that happened to the victims, and strange/scary things that happened to our family.
I went online and read up on the EAR, which then led to me reading the (partial?) EAR(?) journal entry about the 6th grade teacher that sounded a lot like my dad. Then, I found your forum where a few of you actually mention my dad by name.
After talking with my mom (who at least one of you has obviously talked to based on other posts on this forum, and under what may have been false pretenses, or at least my mom did not understand who she was talking to), I now understand that my parents didn't talk about this because they wanted to protect their young (at the time) daughters. However, my mom did not know of any connection with my dad, or about a journal entry that was found that possibly mentions my dad(?).
To those of you who have posted about my dad, you have some of your facts wrong, but mostly your accounts about his teaching style are right. My dad definitely taught knots to his students (there was a science? assignment that was based around a bucket and tying knots - I have his old knot-tying book that he lent to his students), and he also taught some basic wilderness survival skills, as well as conducted an ecology riverwalk along the back trails of the American River between Cordova High School and Goethe Park. The sentence writing also rings true, as well as the tough love. The pushups over spit, I can see that happening, but not the wiping the spit up with bare hands... or at least it's not consistent with what I know of my dad. The camp he started was not for at risk kids. My dad was a dedicated and caring teacher. Your accounts of him having students that went to prison for various crimes are accurate. He stuck with a few of them and continued to be in touch with them and mentor them even while they were in prison. Most students loved my dad (the turnout at his memorial service of former students and parents was overwhelming and touching). However, I can imagine that his tough love wasn't perfect for everyone.
Aside from my dad's possible connection, or perhaps because of, several chilling things happened to our family over the 70's, early to mid 80's, and again in the early 90's. We would find strange objects and jewelry in our yard and house that didn't belong to anyone in the family and seemed to just mysteriously appear in plain sight. One time we found a brown paper bag with some rope and what looked like a hunting knife in the back yard. Another time, all of our wire clothesline had mysteriously disappeared. I remember this one because my dad thought I had taken it down to play with. We had very scary calls (that sounded a lot like what I heard on the podcast) that came and went over the years (until *69 became a thing), and they lasted for weeks at a time. The caller knew my mom's schedule and where she worked, or where she had been before coming home. There was a constant feeling of being watched in the house until we started closing all the blinds on a regular basis, and there were several times where we saw a figure run through our back yard. Then, there was the scariest incident that I'm not going to put into details here, and while it does not compare to what the rape and murder victims endured, it was bone-chilling nonetheless and remains a defining moment in my life and my mom's life.
It may all be pure coincidence, but I'd like to know if it is or isn't.
So my questions ...
Does anyone know if the police or FBI have investigated the possibility that my dad was indeed the 6th grade teacher, and was maybe a trigger to the rapist/killer? Have they checked former Cordova Gardens class photos and done reverse aging on the sketches?
Can anyone tell me what the reference to "Bonnie" is that I've seen mentioned? That's my mom's name, and one of the most unsettling things to me is the description and age of one of the first victims (from the podcast I listened to -- keep in mind I know nothing but what I've learned in the past two days about any of this)... she could have been my mom's doppelgänger.
Also, does anyone know if there were any other incidents or possible connected incidents in Rancho Cordova as late as 1992? My mom and I don't remember the exact date of the most chilling incident, but we think it was 1992 when I was home visiting from college. There should be a police report of this, but my mom and I remember at the time that the police were pretty dismissive of what had happened to us. ***EDITED: something I just remembered - the police did get fingerprints from our incident.
I contacted the FBI tip line this morning because of the coincidences of things that happened to our family. For instance, I now wish we hadn't thrown away the strange objects we found over the years and I can't help wondering if they were connected to any of the crime scenes. Again.. maybe just coincidence.
If anyone knows anything more about the possible connection between the EAR and my dad, I'd appreciate the information. To my mom and my best knowledge, my dad was never contacted by the police or the FBI. My mom has not been contacted by them either.
Thank you, and thank you for your patience as some of this may be redundant from things you've all already covered on this forum. I would never normally be on one of these forums, especially publicly, but I'm hoping to find some answers, and to maybe help all of you figure this whole thing out. I can't imagine what the survivors and family members of victims must continue to go through without closure.
