I emailed Crompton to see if he was interested in communicating with me but he never answered. I guess any story I had was not significant. Maybe it isn't but I want to tell it anyway. In June of 1979, I had just returned back home to Walnut Creek after college final exams. I was 19 then. I believe it was an early June evening around 7pm when I rode my bicycle, a royal blue beat up Gitane brand 10 speed bike from my parent's home three blocks to my friend's home on San Carlos Drive for what we thought would be a fun night of harmless poker. The house was an old Eichler model home with an atrium inside the outside front door. Instead of bringing my bike inside the atrium, I laid it up against the adjacent garage door. At around midnight, we noticed flashing police car lights and heard sirens as they zoomed up the slight incline about 150 yards up San Carlos Drive and then left on El Divisadero Drive across from San Miguel Elementary School (now Berean Christian School?). We ran outside to the driveway wondering what the hell was up. I almost immediately noticed that my bike was missing and initially went into a rage ironically shouting I would pound the guy who did this not knowing what I was about to know. We walked up about halfway up the incline across from San Ardo Court (unbelievably the next EAR crime) and only heard that a home had been broken into. I found a cop possibly searching for either the suspect or clues, and asked him if he knew anything about a stolen bike. He literally froze, and asked me what, when, where, etc. When I gave him the details and description, he demanded "come with me!". We walked briskly to the driveway of the victim's home where the panicked family members i(except the victim who presumably was taken to the hospital) were being questioned by WCPD and presumably CCC investigators (Crompton?) I spotted my bike laying sideways in the low bushes on the left side of the walkway leading to the front door. I confirmed to WCPD it was my bike and it was stolen earlier. They explained to me what had happened and I was stunned and frightened myself. A young agreesive WCPD officer anxious to be a hero had already decided I was the suspect.seeing that my fingerprints were all over the bike. He didn't take kindly when I sarcastically replied "it's my goddamn bike". Another officer had to explain the suspect was a white male and other physical characteristics completely diiferent from me (I'm Asian and was 19, 5-6 140 lbs then). After that moment of insanity, knowing the area like the back of my hand, I urged WCPD to check out the massive grass field directly across the street from the home. EAR was known to commit his crimes near such open fields where he could ran like a cheetah an dissapear. I beleive he originally ran to end of that field (approx 200 yards) and initially hid behind a rotting wood baseball field backstop before climbing a fence into a residence possibly located across the street from the San Miguel Swim Club. From there he was out of the search range. My guess is his car was parked in one of the cul de sacs beyond the intersection of San Carlos Drive and El Divisidero. He must have spotted my unguarded bike as he drove by earlier and realized it was in the perfect line for the crime and ultimate getaway plan. Maybe PD and investigators like Crompton already know these details are find them irrelevant but one never knows for sure. For the record, if you read Sudden Terror, Crompton includes a mere one general sentence about my "role". "An adolescent was questioned but not considered a suspect". Good job of reporting Crompton. Less than 10 words and no attempt to contact me at all.
