The Golden State Killer for most of us, was still at large. A 42-year-old cold case that garnered the interest of many while captivating the imaginations of many more. A serial rapist turned murderer, whose ten year span of activity befuddled law enforcement and terrorized lives. Many victims survived and some went on to advocate for his capture, while bravely putting themselves center stage to bring attention to the case. Many of those victims were not so fortunate, as their families took the mantle of advocating to the public that justice be sought.
Ugly things came and went. Time passed. Alliances were created in this pursuit then destroyed for just about any reason you could possibly fathom. Emotions flared and tears were shed. During this time, information was shared. We have his DNA and his behavior. This thing is solvable. In all fairness, each of us began with not knowing the truth but at the end of the day, the frustration came from not knowing the government name of a man that Northern California dubbed the East Area Rapist from June 1976 to August of 1979, the same man known in Southern California as the Original Night Stalker from October 1979 to May of 1986.
Over fifty rapes, twelve murders and decades of uncertainty later... we know his name now. The news first broke on
Joseph James DeAngelo was identified one month ago to this date as the prime suspect for the crimes committed by the East Area Rapist, Original Night Stalker. It was done through a series of researching that began with the most minuscule of a DNA match. While late author Michelle McNamara coined the name Golden State Killer for this offender, many preferred acknowledging him as the EARONS. What truly mattered at the end of the day was that of the survivors, who knew him as the murderer who took away my sister. My mother. My father. My brother. My uncle. My niece. My grandmother. My aunt... this list continues to this date as we learn more and more come forward.
We saw DeAngelo in court with handcuffs to his wheelchair that very Friday. We saw the man we so long sought. Emotions once again flared, anger began to seep from the pores and finally, we were at odds once again.
My point guys is that our answers will come. Not all of them, but you must admit that now knowing what we so long sought is coming to fruition will only generate more questions before the answers have time to come.
Have patience. We've waited 42 years. It won't take that long to get what we need to know and in that time, we can do everything we know how to do best to get by. Let's not fight, be ugly or consider this case as being something redundant. Survivors are happy but all the same, understandably, many are still wary of the horrors which they have faced due to the actions in which DeAngelo is being prosecuted for.
This is an emotional time. Let's just try to stick together if we can. I've understood the futility of this effort for many years but now more than ever I will strive for everyone to at least trying to get along. It should be all against one, not factions against one.
Anyway, that's my thoughts after one month of knowing the name behind our guy.
