Sacramento law enforcement from 1976 to 2017 can wear this failure like a yoke of shame. Their attempts to disregard potential VR connections was just the beginning. Sure we'll have apologist on here who will rush to their defense ("how were they to know) but it's bullshit and I don't absolve them for a second.
Absolutely. It is not hindsight to say JJD's arrest and subsequent prowling at his. chief's house should have been a red flag. It is a simple fact.
1. Cops talk to other cops-they are the biggest yentas in the world. A substantial event like firing for a theft would be across multiple jurisdictions in 48 hours. Want to hear all the dirt on a jurisfiction-talk to a cop from a neighboring jurisdiction. I worked only irregularly with local jurisdictions but I learned (without asking) who had a negligent discharge in the station house, what local politician kept a mistress, what cop got fired for drinking at a biker bar (after being warned). That is just how it is.
2. The fact it was a minor theft is not a reason to disregard it. It is behavior so outside expectations as to justify a second look. And all cops know...the found behavior is not exclusionary of more serious offenses-it is indicative of an inclination to violate boundaries.
3. Unless the Auburn chief told no one a fired cop was prowling his house (very idoubtful) LE supervisors in nearby jurisdictions would take note. This would include Sac PD/SO.
I wonder if the Chief failed to let others know about his night time visitor (embarrassed? or afraid?) I'm guessing he was afraid. It may have been one of those things where the Chief was very, very glad to see the guy ride off into the sunset without engaging him any further.
And if he was afraid, he was also embarrassed.
I couldn't agree with you more about the "found" behavior.
