Conquistador's take on school breaks & medical connections

I've been meaning to post Conquistador's study for several days and in light of our present conversations about what profession he may have been in, I thought now would be a good time.  Agent 99

I took a long break and reexamined the case with fresh eyes. I went back and looked at the best arguments and evidence that has been presented on this board. I also have tried to figure out LE's strategy in apprehending the suspect and I think I might have of found it.

As has been stated before the 1977/1978 Calendar year for Sacramento State and the EAR crimes are closely linked.
Tuesday September 6th 1977 Instruction begins
Tuesday September 6th 1977 First Stockton Attack (50 miles South of Sacramento) possibly returning from Tulare County.
Between October 1st and December 2nd 1977 there are 5 EAR attacks
December 27 th thru January 29th 1978 Winter Recess
Saturday January 28th 1978 EAR attack (1 day before the end of Winter Recess).
February 2nd 1978 Maggiores killed (4 days after Winter Recess ends)
Saturday March 18th 1978 2nd Stockton Attack (50 miles South of Sacramento) possible heading toward to Tulare County
March 20-24th 1978 Mon-Fri Spring Recess
2 EAR attacks in April 1978
June 2nd 1978 Last Day of Instruction

EAR completely unattatched to Sacramento committs 5 attacks in June and July ranging from Modesto to Davis on nearly all days of the week.

EAR can be traced in Sacramento for roughly two years. This is not enough time to complete a degree unless he recvd some lower division classes. This is where I believe his trail can be found. Look at Sac State students with transfer credits from the College of the Sequoias.

Some will say also look at American River College. I put my money on Sac State. Before the rapes made headlines the bulk of the attacks occurred either on or near Paseo Drive in Rancho Cordova or on the other side of the river off American River Drive. La Riviera Drive is roughly right in the middle of these two clusters. La Riviera just happens to be where the bulk of Sac State students live. The poulation is largely transient and live in low cost apartments and duplexes.

SAC STATE CLASS OF 1978
"ATTN SACRAMENTO LAW ENFORCEMENT"

1. Go to California State Universiry Sacramento
2. Obtain records of transfer students from the College of the Sequoias
3. Filter for candidates that have ties to Southern California at the right times.
This is how the case will be solved.

BAD MEDICINE
In the past I have been critical of the medical connection. I was wrong.  I believe the evidence of some type of medical connection is undeniable. 

If we examine the crimes, we see that the offender closely followed the Fall 1977 and Spring 1978 schedule at CSUS. We know there were 5 victims tied to the Science Dept at Sac State. 4 were nursing students 1 person visited the campus that day.

January 1978 EAR Targets Teenage daughters of doctor
EAR has knowledge of generic drugs
We know that the offender closely followed the UCSB schedule for Fall of 1979 and spring of 1980.
10/1/1979 1st Goleta attack (weekend instruction begins)

3/13/1980 Ventura attack (Instruction ends)

The March pattern can not be overlooked. Three out of the four mid-March attacks occurred far outside the last place EAR was known to be. At this time of the year he seemed to have greater flexibility thus allowing him to travel greater distances than normal. Why? Spring Break is the best answer I have seen. If anyone has another idea please toss it out.

J. H. (female) - Computer programmer A. H. (male) - Computer programmer they're thanked in a book. Here's the quote, from the book "Management Science In Sport" (1976). And this is all the Google Books shows me:"for his support of this project, Ron K. for gathering and sorting the raw data, A.H. for developing the software of the steepest gradient search routine used to develop the field goal kicker model, and J. H. for her editorial.

EAR/ONS was not in Sacramento long enough to receive a degree. That means he most likely transferred credits to another institution. UCSB AND UC Irvine would be the ideal places to check, his name should overlap somewhere.

Interesting question about poetry, in the Valerie McDonald murder case -Michael Hennessey who liked Valerie wrote her poetry and its said he came from a good family ..........this makes me wonder about our EAR ...

I believe he was in a post secondary institution. I think he may have also been associated with some type of traveling varsity sports team.

I find the student and medical connections less and less compelling each time I consider them.

EAR/ONS was a physical sort of guy, not cerebral. He ran, he climbed, he biked, he apparently walked roofs, he physically attacked; he apparently hot-wired cars; he spent much of his time outdoors. About the only "studying" he did that we know of was to physically observe the comings and goings of neighborhood residents as part of his physical reconnaissance, a skill he could have learned in the military, hardly an academic institution. These physical traits are part of the guy's recorded history that cannot be ignored. Except for the poem he presumably wrote, what info do we have that lends itself to the idea that he was cerebral?

Further, if he was so cerebral, how do you explain the inane gibberish that he supposedly wrote, in the notes published in the L.A. magazine article? We can't have it both ways ... either the guy was a cerebral/intellectual sort of person suitable for academic studies ... or he was lacking in brain power, if we are to believe the L.A. article. Which is it? Can't be both.

In addition ...

If he was a university student, where exactly did he live while "studying"? A dorm on campus? ... an apartment off campus? ... in a private residence with a friend? If any of the above, there would be some record, some history, a paper trail ... LE never found any.

Using university dates to show that the guy was connected to some university can be a bit misleading.  The dates could relate as much to potential victims as to the attacker.

But most important of all ...

Given that the guy had a dreadful compulsion to physically terrorize, do you really think he could concentrate on his academic studies? How would it be possible to get through just one semester of university studies with a physical compulsion so extreme?

As for the hospital connection ...

The medical field was and still is a big industry. Given the number of people EAR/ONS attacked, there's bound to be at least a few victims that had some medical connection. Conquistador lists a handful of such victims, an entirely routine finding, given that so much of the general population worked in that field.

There are universities and medical facilities all over the place, throughout California. It's hardly possible to be a criminal and not be fairly close to some university or hospital. That EAR/ONS schedule seemed to coincide with some university dates or that a few of his victims had a medical connection seems to me largely circumstantial and coincidental.

Drifter,  Just a couple of points: of course none of us really know if he worked or went to school or how smart he was or was not, but if he wasn't involved in dating, partying, sports activities, television watching, his "hobby" could have been his reconnaisance and criminal activity. "Leisure tempts excitement seeking" from his poem. There have been rapists who were married and had jobs that I have seen television programs on, just can't recall their names. I specifically remember the Canadian Colonel Russell Williams.  He was dubbed  "the pride of the Canadian Forces".  Who would ever suspect him?  Where did he get the time and he was married.   

I am trying to recall if it was Conquistador or if it was Repoman that told me that when he tried to find himself nothing shows up for where he was living in his college years.  We can't shoot things down just because he doesn't show up in my opinion.  That might be exactly why he hasn't been found. 

So you might be right but you might be wrong (sounds like a Billy Joel song). I just want to keep an open mind and explore different possibilities.

About the inane gibberish in the journal, it was from the 6th grade.  I wonder what I sounded like and what my spelling was like in the 6th grade.  Probably not very good.

Most of us I think want to maintain an open mind. I certainly do. I haven't written off any reasonable theory.

But the university and hospital theories have lost some degree of credibility with me, for the reasons I itemize above.

That you bring forth Russell Williams, or any other known serial offender, as a surrogate for the EAR/ONS kinda seems like grasping at straws. Course, most everyone does it. The point is that no matter who we use as a criminal reference to EAR/ONS, the difference is that the referenced criminal has already been captured; as such, he is unlike the EAR/ONS. In other words, we can't compare apples and oranges, except in the most generalized and unhelpful ways.

Hi Drifter, I shouldn't have checked this post. It's so late! Just a fast response. Of course you are free to have your own opinion that could turn out to be right. However I have to disagree with the Colonel Russel Williams comment that it would be comparing apples with oranges. Just because one serial killer was caught and one wasn't doesn't make it apples and oranges. But the point was that Williams must have been a very busy person and even was married and yet found the time to do his reconnaissance and crimes etc.

Also, I do have to disagree again on that we have to prove anything.  We only have to prove a theory in a court of law. 

Good point about the journal being written the past tense.  Yet, it did sound like a kid writing it so it could have been written in the 8th grade, but like you say we don't know when, just that it was in the past tense.  I do think he sounded very young though.

Nice work, Sandia! Posting the link above because I noticed how in 1976 through to '77, EAR was offending regularly in Sacramento from early June. Could be he graduated highschool and started college in Sacramento. There are a lot of professions that offer degrees that take two years or less: fire science, building inspection, heavy equipment operator, police officer, etc. He didn't appear to be leaving for summer break in '76.

EAR/ONS was not in Sacramento long enough to receive a degree. That means he most likely transferred credits to another institution. UCSB AND UC Irvine would be the ideal places to check, his name should overlap somewhere.

I took a long break and reexamined the case with fresh eyes. I went back and looked at the best arguments and evidence that has been presented on this board. I also have tried to figure out LE's strategy in apprehending the suspect and I think I might have of found it.

As has been stated before the 1977/1978 Calendar year for Sacramento State and the EAR crimes are closely linked.
Tuesday September 6th 1977 Instruction begins
Tuesday September 6th 1977 First Stockton Attack (50 miles South of Sacramento) possibly returning from Tulare County.
Between October 1st and December 2nd 1977 there are 5 EAR attacks
December 27 th thru January 29th 1978 Winter Recess
Saturday January 28th 1978 EAR attack (1 day before the end of Winter Recess).
February 2nd 1978 Maggiores killed (4 days after Winter Recess ends)
Saturday March 18th 1978 2nd Stockton Attack (50 miles South of Sacramento) possible heading toward to Tulare County
March 20-24th 1978 Mon-Fri Spring Recess
2 EAR attacks in April 1978
June 2nd 1978 Last Day of Instruction

EAR completely unattatched to Sacramento committs 5 attacks in June and July ranging from Modesto to Davis on nearly all days of the week.

EAR can be traced in Sacramento for roughly two years. This is not enough time to complete a degree unless he recvd some lower division classes. This is where I believe his trail can be found. Look at Sac State students with transfer credits from the College of the Sequoias.

Some will say also look at American River College. I put my money on Sac State. Before the rapes made headlines the bulk of the attacks occurred either on or near Paseo Drive in Rancho Cordova or on the other side of the river off American River Drive. La Riviera Drive is roughly right in the middle of these two clusters. La Riviera just happens to be where the bulk of Sac State students live. The poulation is largely transient and live in low cost apartments and duplexes.

This is how the case will be solved.

BAD MEDICINE
In the past I have been critical of the medical connection. I was wrong.  I believe the evidence of some type of medical connection is undeniable. 

If we examine the crimes, we see that the offender closely followed the Fall 1977 and Spring 1978 schedule at CSUS. We know there were 5 victims tied to the Science Dept at Sac State. 4 were nursing students 1 person visited the campus that day.
