The day of using DNA and now genealogical sites to capture serial offenders is most definitely here and I have a grim prediction for the future.
First some foundation, The modern car has been beefed up with more advanced and complicated anti-theft devices that have been making stealing them much more difficult for the average criminal so the trend turned more to carjacking rather than stealing a car while it is unoccupied. The theft needs to have the keys and have the car running in order to steal the car and it has to be done with a weapon or threat of violence for that to happen. There are of course people who are still able to steal cars while parked but its much more difficult and time consuming making a carjacking quicker.
There are several cases since JJD where Genealogical sites have been used to identify unknown serial predators that would not have been possible without this method. There are experts in LE and forensics all telling the public it is a matter of time before many more cases will be solved using this method and there are some saying if you commit a crime you will leave trace DNA at minimum and they will submit it and locate a family members and work their way down your family tree and catch you. I am afraid statements like those will make the average serial rapist (whatever that means) who may not want to kill earlier in their criminal career but will force them to kill and hide victim'stims body in order to avoid capture.
I am not saying the current status of DNA technology is bad but it may have far-reaching repercussions such as those rapists in the start of a series that may last for years graduating immediately to murder after sexually assaulting a victim rather than just committing the rape. I understand rape can be devastating to a victim and I do not have any intention to say rape is not a terrible life-altering event but at least there is life after it even if it is seen through traumatic eyes.
I suppose there are also rapists who start out raping and killing victims from their first but many more escalate up to the murder and in fact up to rape. The best solution is identifying behavior traits while the offender is in the sexual burglary phase which has been my work over the last 10 plus years looking for patterns that can be passed to LE officers on the front line while the offender has yet to harm a human being.
These are just some of my thoughts does anyone else have anything to add?
