I have a theory that it was revenge.
I believe that DeAngelo tried to become a sheriff in Santa Barbara, flunked the psychological test and was furious about it and had to blame someone, certainly not himself, so he blamed the sheriff's office and specifically the big Kahuna himself, Sheriff John Carpenter, 8 times elected, very popular sheriff. DeAngelo was failing abnormal psychology in college and Bonnie broke up with him because he kept badgering her to cheat so he could pass.
I knew a very mean kid when I was a kid. He was scary. He eventually tried to become a cop and thank God he failed the psychology test and they turned him down.
I wonder if that is why DeAngelo ended up in tiny Exeter, a patrol cop yet with all that education. His co-worker questioned him about that and said with all his education he should be with the FBI yet there he was in tiny Exeter. Then he ended up in tiny Auburn. I wonder why? Did the small departments not have psychological exams perhaps?
He had stated to Bonnie that he planned on being a Highway Patrolman. (Highway Patrol is the highest paid of the various LE agencies, so why didn't he?)
I am saying I think he decided to target Santa Barbara Sheriff John Carpenter. "How'd you like to have a dead body in your back yard sheriff?" Eva Taylor lived behind the sheriff 4 houses away on the street behind. She lived on Parejo and Carpenter lived on University Drive. There was an easement running between the houses on University Drive and Parejo beginning at Patterson and traveling behind ET's then dog legging out to University right on the property line of Sheriff Carpenter.
I think when DeAngelo was fired in Auburn he was in a murderous rage. He went out to kill Chief Willick and didn't. He probably knew he'd be caught. So I think he decided to take him murderous fury out of town. He knew right where to go, to where he had murdered before and what could be better than to target Sheriff Carpenter again.
So I can't prove it, it's just a theory but when SBSO says they lied to Detective Crompton and covered up that there were murderers in Goleta because President Reagan had his ranch in the area, I don't buy it. It wasn't because of Regan's ranch, 22 miles north of Goleta in the Santa Ynez Mountain, driving time of 32 minutes...no it was to protect Sheriff Carpenter. Carpenter's home surrounded by 5 murders plus 2 attempted murders. Might be just a tad bit embarrassing! And I think that was the whole point. Eva Taylor behind him, Offerman/Manning and Sanchez/Domingo and on the other side of him just a couple of blocks away and then there is H/H who escaped.
There is a bust today in front of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office of Sheriff John Carpenter.
