Good point about him possibly living with relatives in Visalia/Goleta, but on second thought, would he take that risk returning to VR territory as a fired cop? I think you're right about his massive grudge and resentment toward LE in 1979, though I still don't understand how Carpenter fits into the picture--can you expand on that? What we know about JJD's life seems to be all about payback, except for Bonnie's dad, who seemed to be an exception, maybe because he was a man of God with great wisdom.
As for Irvine, my theory is simply that he might be delivering auto parts to auto or parts dealers in SoCal, which could take him along 101 south to highway 5 and Irvine, and allow him to find perfect stalking areas such as Goleta, and easy access like Ventura. I could see a situation where he might be involved in a Sac area business that broke down wrecked or broken down autos for their parts, and sold them at competitive prices to big vendors or higher end dealers. By removing parts, he learned how to replace them, making the transition to mechanic much easier. But of course many other delivery jobs fit this too.
I'm still puzzled why JJD would rob a store for hammer and dog repellent. The planner he was, I wonder if he wasn't broke at that time (1979), and desperate, and may have gotten away with theft many times before then, just as he tried to "steal" grades using Bonnie. It seems his job as a replacement cop was somewhat comparable to a substitute teacher--lots of time off before getting an assignment, but also the possibility of significantly lower pay. The late 70's was a recessionary period with both high interest rates and unemployment, which is how Reagan got elected over the incumbent Carter. So once he got fired, it seems possible he already had another low paying job to go f/t on. If you think about it, he may have already been making the drive down to SoCal before he got fired--as 101 connects to 680 at San Jose, and highway 5 was not completed yet. Also, DeAngelo seemed to be a true family man (by what we read), who did well with kids--a Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde. I can't see him leaving his wife and later kids for more than a week or two, and there are no records that give him addresses for different locations, and he didn't seem to be cautious about listing his Citrus Heights address later on.
