Basic questions?
If there was a large drug ring at Mathers, wouldn't they be selling the drugs to the civilian population around it? At some point those servicemen would have had to have found local drug dealers that they could trust with their product. Just guessing, but it might have been heroin in Sac, and cocaine in SB and OC. Aside from looking at rapes during this time, should we be looking at male drug dealers who were murdered in home invasions or something Maggiore like? There were a few during the EAR crimes and one prominent one I know of in OC.

If gsk didn't look physically intimidating would he have had to enforce his rules in some other way. He couldn't have gone to LE. He might not have wanted his victims to appear to have been drug related victims. Could any of the Santa Barbara victims have used cocaine or even have sold a modest amount to friends? When I consider the amounts of cocaine that hetrick was smuggling could any of his helpers have been skimming some off the top to sell on their own? Could Offerman have been receiving cocaine like this and the janitor found it and was threatening to make trouble? Or the other way around? Maybe Glasby was supposed to handle quieting the Janitor for GSK and he didn't. And with Glasby's other troubles he became a liability? Could the GSK have been one of the dealers in SAC and then followed the drugs to Santa Paula airport and then down to OC? Would he have kept a job during this time, maybe something where he could meet potential users? Or a kite shop like Wolfe had? Or was he a building contractor and used the money to cover the times when business got slow? He might even have paid his trusted employees with drugs knowing that they could then turn it around and double their money.

Interesting possibilities. Considering how large the amount of drugs were supposedly coming into Mather, I would think it would be both distributed locally and elsewhere. Maybe they were sending some south. There was supposedly very heavy govt. and LE involvement in the CA drug trade (PAT is one example), but I don't know if the Mather ring was supposedly part of that. There were allegations that drugs were being flown into El Toro and other bases, too. Col. Sabow's death at El Toro seems hinky, but it was ruled a suicide. 

I have a hard time thinking all of GSK's victims were due to his enforcing drug rules, but I'm trying to keep an open mind. If he was doing that, there may also be other rapes he did that went unreported if the victims thought it was related to drugs. 

Glasby and his cohort were supposedly breaking into Dr. Offerman's office to steal drugs and that's why the custodian was attacked. Could be that there was more to that.

There are lots of ways to launder drug money, but one of the favored ways back then (still is) to launder drug money is - REAL ESTATE. So the drug and real estate theories in relation to GSK, may go hand in hand. 

Funny you mention drugs money and real estate _- I read a book about a 1970`s drugs smuggler who said most of Miami in the 1980`s was built on money laundered from cocaine

In another thread (I think), Sandia indicated that the SB cop had a roofing business in Sacramento. Someone (either Port or Sandia) indicated that Brett Glasby's father (Glasby Sr.) was a building contractor.

So, we have a SB building contractor in tandem with a roofing business in Sac. That's pretty close ties to ... real estate /realty.

Glasby was a drug dealer.

Port does not seem to put much credence on the Brett Glasby connection to the SB cop nor to the apparent fact that Brett's father was a building contractor.

Why is that, Port?

Not trying to box you into a corner. Just curious. Is there some reason that we should not pursue ... "building contractor" with "roofing" with "Glasby as drug dealer"?

Drifter- Glasby was a very small time drug dealer.  I have researched this connection until I feel I have beaten the horse to death.  I do find it interesting that Glasby's co-hort in crime later was involved in a murder in Sacramento- once again small time drug gang thugs.  I find it interesting that the Glasby's took a tape recorder surfing deep into Mexico.  Could they have been informants?

There is a woman who maintains a website who came on the old board and argued for a huge drug conspiracy involving Santa Barbara.  She even felt that Manning's mother believed Dee was killed in a drug hit. She posted as shewhowatches on the old board. Frankly, conspiracy theories have to be grounded in some reality

I find the whole Maverick operation to be of more interest- they were the big boys with tenuous ties to some very questionable operations to which Lyman may have been oblivious.

But has any of this gotten us closer to GSK?  I don't think we can deny the ties to military, construction and medical.

I am open though to all theories and research.

The rapes strike me as a mixture of stocked victims and peep/prowl opportunities. I think he was out of control and he was driven. This may sound twisted (and it is) but I think he was dating. Sometimes he was courting, sometimes he was getting lucky. Peeping and prowling was his foreplay. He did it all his life.

I agree. I don't think all the ons crimes were either stalking or planned murders meant to look like something else. Many of the people I read about committed crimes for various reasons at various times. Especially concerning drugs. It would seem that regardless of your level in the business that every deal might be the one that breaks you if it goes wrong. And since by its very nature, the more laws you are willing to break to achieve your goals the more successful you might be. An unsuccessful criminal gets caught, a successful criminal gets away with it, would you be an average citizen if nobody even knows a crime occurred. I was talking with a guy that served time for drugs. He said that on one occasion a guy owed him a good sum of money. He couldn't go to the police and he couldn't kill him. So one night he snuck into the guys house and took a picture of himself standing over the guys bed while he slept. He waited a couple days and then gave him the picture. He got his money. Whats interesting also is that this guy is a Choctaw Indian and has bright blue eyes. It seems unless LE already knows that a suspect or victim is involved with drugs not many people are going to tell them. I read that Delorean was threatened by Hoffman with the claim that they were going to kill his wife and children. I read also that Hoffman was already associated with Hetrick three years before the sting. Could ONS have been the one who carried out these threats. Is that why he searched for items from the house that were very personal? If these drug dealers killed the one who owed them the money how would they ever get paid? If they killed those around them, and could prove it with some item that they could only have gotten at the crime scene, they could still get paid. I think somehow Delorean was able to slip through. I would guess that with the amount of drugs being bought and sold in SB that there was a steep vertical progression between the traffickers and those that controlled the money. The fact that Gordon Liddy, who was a personal friend of Hetrick's father in law, called him is amazing to me. It also reminds me of LBJ in that the same law firm handled many of his friends legal issues. Lyman was partnered with Drenscher and I have seen Drenschers name in other places also. Could a law firm be responsible for the framing? Especially one handling numerous drug cases? Could the Marine have contacted a lawyer about the rape allegation? This is another article Frednedna found concerning drugs in CA during this time period.

Another member of a former drug-smuggling ring known as the "Coronado Company" has been arrested on new drug charges, authorities said Wednesday.

John Edward Wade, 47, of Del Mar was arrested Monday in the Northern California town of Leggett, the San Diego County Integrated Narcotic Task Force announced. He is the third former "Coronado Company" member to be arrested in the task force investigations since Friday.

Wade was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to import marijuana. He was described by authorities as an "alleged partner and financier" in a plan to smuggle 10 tons of marijuana into the country by boat. Agents seized about $55,000 when Wade was taken into custody.

Among the nine other people arrested in connection with the smuggling plot was Edward R. Otero, 34, of Del Mar, another member of the "Coronado Company," a drug-trafficking ring that so named because it had its start among classmates at Coronado High School in the early 1970s.

Otero was taken into custody Monday in Rockport, along the Northern California coast. Authorities said Otero was the leader of a group that had gone to Rockport to rendezvous with a boat off the coast.

A third Coronado Company member, Robert Kent Lahodny, 39, of San Diego, was arrested Friday in San Diego by FBI agents in connection with an alleged plot to sell 11 pounds of cocaine.

Guilty Plea on 4 Counts Halts Trial of Attorney

Ending his trial on its 22nd day, attorney Phillip DeMassa, a central figure in the government's investigation of the "Coronado Company" marijuana-smuggling ring, pleaded guilty to three counts of illegal currency transactions and one count of harboring a fugitive.

Local defense attorneys and others familiar with the trial called the plea-bargain agreement favorable for DeMassa because prosecutors agreed to drop drug-related counts. Since the crimes he pleaded to do not involve moral turpitude, DeMassa may be able to keep his law license.

But the plea bargain, which was reached late Tuesday afternoon, prohibits DeMassa from practicing in federal court until the California Bar Assn. investigates the matter. In its investigation, the bar will decide whether DeMassa should be allowed to practice in state court.

U.S. Atty. Peter K. Nunez, whose office has prosecuted the case aggressively since the investigation of DeMassa began in earnest in April, 1983, called the plea bargain a victory for Assistant U.S. Attys. Herbert B. Hoffman and Joan P. Weber, who prosecuted the case.

"We were satisfied with the disposition. He pleaded guilty to four felony counts . . . and he agreed to resign from (practicing in) the federal bar," said Nunez.

The highly publicized case grew out of charges by Nunez that DeMassa was involved in a drug conspiracy with members of the so-called Coronado Company marijuana smuggling ring.

The government's investigation of DeMassa created a national furor among criminal defense attorneys in April, 1983, when federal agents conducted a three-day search of his office and home. Agents from the Internal Revenue Service, Drug Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Attorney's office justified the raid on grounds that they were looking for evidence that would link DeMassa to Coronado Co. smuggling activities. Ninety-five cartons and more than 1,000 of DeMassa's files were confiscated.

Last September the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the search was illegal because it violated DeMassa's clients' right to privacy.

Agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration in 1977 began probing the Coronado Company, which was founded by young men who used surfboards to bring marijuana into the United States from Mexico. As the ring's smuggling techniques became more sophisticated, the investigation was broadened in 1981 to include a task force of agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Internal Revenue Service, Customs Service and other federal agencies.

About 60 people have been indicted and convicted since 1977, and about 20 have served time in federal prison. Louis Villar, the ring's mastermind, turned government informant and was placed on five years probation in exchange for his testimony against his former ring members.

Here is a synopsis of the Coronado Company according to court documents:

In 1972, Louis Villar, Edward Otero, Paul Acree, and Lance Weber agreed to work as partners for the purpose of smuggling and distributing marijuana. This partnership became known as the Coronado Company. In its early years, this partnership conducted smuggling operations on a relatively small scale. As the size of the loads increased, employees were hired to help with the off-loading part of the operation. In 1977, Bob Lahodny joined the Company, replacing Weber as a partner.

Late in 1979, the Company began to plan a fifth smuggling operation. Lahodny contacted a previous supplier, Lux Phaksuwana, and his associate, defendant Bibbero, about procuring a load of Thai marijuana. In a series of meetings at Santa Barbara and San Francisco, Bibbero met with the partners of the Company to discuss the operation. It was agreed that Bibbero would buy seven tons of marijuana and ready it for shipment to the United States. The Company would oversee the transporting of the load to Neah Bay, Washington, and land the shipment by helicopter for warehousing and distribution. The financial terms of this agreement were that Bibbero and the Company would each pay 50% of the cost of the supply, and Bibbero and the Company would receive 40% and 60% of the load respectively.

After a series of mishaps, the off-loading operation was abandoned with only one ton of the load safely landed and warehoused. Six tons of marijuana were recovered by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents on the shores of Neah Bay. Bibbero successfully renegotiated the division of the salvaged marijuana and received 45% of the load.

During the spring and summer of 1981, Bibbero met Villar and other partners at Santa Barbara, Palo Alto, and LaCosta, California, to plan a sixth smuggling operation. Because of the debacle at Neah Bay, it was agreed that Bibbero would receive more than half of the load. Bibbero also succeeded in getting a friend, Joe Siegfried, onto the off-loading crew so that Bibbero could maintain closer contact with the off-loading operation. The landing was planned for Bear Harbor, California. Marshall was recruited to work as a crew member and arrived at the site several weeks early to help prepare for the off-loading operation.

When the boat transporting the marijuana had engine trouble near Japan, Bibbero loaned the Company $25,000 to cover the cost of repairs and was scheduled to receive 100% interest on this loan.

A six-ton load was successfully landed at Bear Harbor in October, 1981, and transported to a house at Arcata, California, where it was weighed and packaged. Marshall participated in the off-loading. Bibbero stayed at a hotel in Eureka during the operation. He later arrived at the Arcata house with Siegfried, congratulated the crew members, and departed. Sometime after the operation was completed, Lahodny hosted a victory party, which was attended by Bibbero and Marshall.

On August 3, 1982, a federal grand jury in the Southern District of California returned a three-count indictment against Bibbero, Marshall, and twenty-five other individuals pertaining to the drug smuggling operation. Count one charged Bibbero, Marshall, and twenty-five others with conspiracy to possess marijuana, exceeding 1000 pounds, with intent to distribute in violation of 21 U.S.C. Secs. 841(a)(1), 841(b)(6), and 846 (1982). Count two charged the same individuals with conspiracy to import marijuana with intent to distribute in violation of 21 U.S.C. Secs. 952, 960, and 963. Count three charged Bibbero and twelve others, not including Marshall, with possession of 3000 pounds of marijuana with intent to distribute in violation of 21 U.S.C. Sec. 841(a)(1).

The district court divided the twenty-seven defendants into three groups and ordered three separate trials. The defendants were tried as a separate group, and judgments were entered after the jury found Bibbero and Marshall guilty as per the indictment. The defendants filed a timely appeal from the district court's judgment order.

A couple thoughts on the articles posted above.

What kind of footprint would many of these individuals have had for these various places that they brought drugs in to if they weren't caught or snitched on?

I would think a lawyer would know that too much evidence can get a client off just like no evidence. If not for dna. it might be hard for a jury to decide if the ear was guilty or not with all the evidence in these crimes.

Demassa was even linked to Sonny Barger in one article.

I wonder also who they met up with in Santa Barbara?

Is it possible he chose to write about Custer? What if Custer was one of gsk's heroes? Maybe he identified with him from a shared similar physical description? A similar birthday? The same hometown or family background? What if he actually joined the 7th cav like Custer and served in Vietnam. Custer died almost exactly one hundreds years before the first attributed gsk crime.

You saw the post from Sandia that included a response to her from Inv. Pool stating that Glasby was cleared by DNA.  Glasby was also cleared by fingerprints very early into the Offerman Manning investigations.  There were detectives that were so convinced that these murders were committed by a young local juvenile offender that they tried to make the evidence fit.  Let's face it - that middle class neighborhood could breath a sigh of relief when Glasby died in Mexico, if the rumors were to be believed.  I believe it was actually a neighbor of the retired cop who owned the roofing business.  The retired cop owned a KFC.  I am still open to Glasby having made the acquaintance of GSK somewhere along the way.


I look at the timing of the first crime in Goleta for clues.  1979 was a huge year for the defense industry most especially in Goleta due to the missile testing at Vandenburg.  Occtober 1, 1979 was also the first day of class at UCSB.  Why was GSK in Goleta?  We know Glasby was not GSK.  Why was GSK in Goleta?  Why did defense contractors advertise shuttles and housing between Irvine and Goleta during this time period?

I also ask why was a 70 year old woman bludgeoned to death in a seemingly sexually motivated crime two blocks from Toltec Way in 1974 and  a Raytheon screwdriver was found at the crime scene? That is why I continue to look at sim techs who would have been at Lemoore and then Mather for navigation training.  If not a sim tech, then perhaps someone like one.  I believe that the construction angle is about method of operation.  I will say, though, that the notebook development drawing has weakened my theory, if the drawing belonged to GSK.

A defense contractor or military man does not exclude drug activity from being a factor.

That Brett Glasby is not the EAR/ONS has been clear to me for quite a long time. The real question is ... did Brett or another Glasby cross paths with the EAR/ONS at some point? If so, that would be a major lead.

From the A&E board, I have copied some messages from Arch, Bear99, and guessting. All three posters speak to this possible lead.

Some of these messages are from two or even three years ago. And I would not expect that either Arch or Bear99 or guessting would necessarily still agree with what they wrote so long ago.

But I post those messages here, for the sake of case continuity, and relevance to this thread.
