The drugs connection ..... + another theory

At various points in reading about this case I have always been intrigued by the drugs connection as I like to call it

 - the car connected to a drug dealer
 -in Goleta EAR conducted himself in such a way that cops quickly suspected a local drug dealer
 -EAR a lot of the times left items of value - this has lead me to think either he is from a very well off background or he has other means of income and one of the few I can think of which would make a guy like him not need to steal items of value from his victims would be if he was connected to the drugs trade were people make lots cash  ...
 - there is also the intriguing stuff about how the dogs reacted to his scent ..... , this may possibly link to legal and illegal drug use

This really makes me wonder about the several other aspects on this case  - if EAR had metabolic /hormonal issues this suggests he used some clinic or hospital and things get interesting when you start to look at the medical connection with regards to a good chunk of  the SoCal victims . ...

Possibilities that spring to mind include that maybe he spotted Patty when she was in her workplace when  he went for some treatment or check-up and took it on from there.  I have always wondered about how the Harrington`s were selected as victims given that they lived in a gated community and I havent read or heard of any prowling in their neighborhood prior to their murders   ...if this is true then EAR specifically went into that neighborhood to target them which rises all sorts of possible theories....

Some open questions:

Were there any weird incidents or prowlers prior to the Harrington`s being targeted ?
Is there any other evidence which is in favor or disproves the whole drugs connection ?

I think there's potentially a strong connection. I know albion (where is he!) was pursuing something along these lines. I had also had a discussion with some folks about Glasby, who was originally a suspect in the SB murders and he was known to be a drug dealer, and whether he (Glasby) was framed by the GSK.

What is the stuff about dogs reacting to his scent? I know he avoided dogs...

Indeed, the selection of the Harrington's seem to standout, as they lived in a community that would be difficult to prowl.

I also think the Harrington location is the most atypical of the crime scenes.  A neighbor did report sounds in the bushes and in this article a neighbor indicates they had a few bicycle thefts.

to clarify, on the first article, it sounds like the sounds in the bushes was AFTER the murders:

Mark Carey’s home, where he has lived since 1974, is right across the street from the Harrington house, added that many neighbors, like his family, bought dogs and installed more locks. “We all began reacting to even the smallest noise coming from the bushes,” he said. “Everyone was sleeping much lighter after that.”

Interesting articles, Port, especially the second one. Roger Harrington sure gives the impression that the killer was someone Patti knew.

Lots of home construction in the general area, as with other attacks; and there's that hospital connection again.

Dan- We do not know if there were other reported incidents in the Orange County murders. There was an article in the Visalia paper that did indicate there were "strange burglaries" in the Orange County cases, but we have no examples of these incidents. The Santa Ana Register for this time period is available online at newspaperarchives.com. I periodically look for burglaries there. There was a rash of burglaries in Northwood around the time of Janelle's murder.

Drifter- Yes sadly, Mr. Harrington did not live to learn that Keith and Patrice were killed by a madman.

Cerulean-  Crimes like this did not happen in places like Niguel Shores.  LE always looks for motive- this crime doesn't have a motive like jealousy or greed.  Mr. Harrington sounds like he was a logical person who couldn't imagine that one of his sons would ever encounter someone like the GSK.

Bit, since Patrice's father was a retired Air Force Colonel, I do always wonder where GSK encountered her.

Patrice's father was a retired Air Force Colonel? These medical/military/construction connections just keep going on and on! I had always felt it was a medical connection but now that military connection jumps off the page!

If you look at the case, and as is the first instance for any police force, they concentrate on those closest to the victims. And unfortunately, in this case, the killer just happened to pick a few victims who the police believed their killers were individuals close or assoviated with them, and concentrated on those individuals.

I think he purposefully prowled around conspicuously before these murders in order to make LE think the crimes were random. It sounds crazy, but in those days (and due to his own vast experience as EAR) this guy could pretty much count on people not calling the police to report just about any manner of prowler hijinks. But he could certainly bet they'd recall such things later after the neighbors up the street were murdered.... I suggested on the A&E board some time ago that San Diego should be looked at for possible connections because Dana Point is right off the freeway when you're on your way to SD. If you see it, it's either your destination or you're on your way to Escondido or San Diego... There aren't even shopping centers and such (these days even)right around Dana Point, so it's unlikely he stumbled upon Pattie out and about.
