Carpinteria is just a few miles south of Santa Barbara on the coast between Santa Barbara and Ventura. I only have a zerox copy from the library of a news story so I’ll have to retype it here. Note the date March 1980.
Incident Two below is of the most interest to me but in light of the other crimes I am now wondering if incident one could be connected.
CARPINTERIA HERALD MARCH 28, 1980
“Police Investigations of Three Incidents Underway”
INCIDENT ONE:
Carpinteria police are investigating an incident Wednesday when a 30 to 35 year old man reportedly exposed himself to an 11 year old girl.
According to police reports, the suspect pulled up next to the young girl and asked where Nipomo Street was. When she neared the car, she told the police, she saw the man’s trousers were around his knees.
NOTE: She was only 11 years old, probably in shock BUT I wonder if she would have been able to say if he was little? Or big? In his privates. I wonder if that police report is still available? If it is mentioned that he was small that would be REALLY interesting.
The girl told police she had been walking to school, and after giving the man directions, she was allowed to go on.
She told police she thought the man was driving a blue Toyota.
NOTE: That is pretty good for an 11 year old to know the make of a car. I could understand getting the color right.
INCIDENT TWO
The police also reported a March 24 residential burglary where an estimated
$15 FACE VALUE IN SILVER COINS was taken.
The victim of the burglary said she came home and found the front door open and the interior COMPLETELY RANSACKED.
Suspects apparently entered the house through the garage, where they found a lawn tool and pried the kitchen entry door open. The burglar already had tried to enter through a bedroom window, where the screen was found bent away from the window, but the window itself was secure.
NOTE: So much trouble for coins? I’d like to know if other things of value were left. I would imagine so. It seems there would be more things of value in a home than $15 of coins. COINS! The night of O/M my neighbor was one of the 5 burglary victims and random coins were stolen along with one earing (it might have been a ring) but COINS!
INCIDENT THREE:
In another burglary, a stereo and public address system was taken from the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 941 Walnut Avenue. A groundskeeper, March 25, found the double entry doors open and a volunteer later discovered the PA system missing while dusting. Entry apparently was made through an open window.
All three incidents still are under investigation.
NOTE: I have notes on this next "dog shooting" incident but am not clear if I read this in the Carpinteria Herald.
Wednesday, April 2, 1980, Carpinteria resident (name redacted) of (address redacted) Casitas Pass Road, said that about 7 a.m. her GERMAN SHEPHERD came home with BLOOD STREAMING FROM TWO .22 CALIBER BULLETS.
NOTE: This home is not in a tract neighborhood. It is located near Foothill in Carpinteria (NOTE! H/H, O/M, S/D in Goleta were located on either side of Cathedral Oaks which is actually Foothill, it changes names from Cathedral Oaks to Foothill about 4 miles down the road. The Smiths lived a few houses above "Foothill!") It is large acreage properties up there with groves etc. I called and spoke to the adult son of the woman mentioned in the article. He said they always suspected the dog stumbled into some pot farm operation but don't really know.
I asked him if there was any other suspicious activity, break-in’s in the neighborhood or attempted break-in’s, hang up calls, strangers noticed in the neighborhood driving, or biking, walking, anyone with a German Shepherd in the neighborhood? He said no.
NOTE: Another dog incident! And the timeline makes this of real interest to me.
By the way, the dog survived, shots missed vital organs.
I don’t frankly see how any of this is going to help except for the exposure incident that makes me wonder if there were other such incidents that have never been connected to him if they did not include home invasion, rape, tying up, teacups, couples etc.
Additionally: I suspect he was responsible for a failed “robbery” of an 18 year old girl in a shopping center parking lot in Rancho Cordova. Was going to be a kidnapping but didn’t get that far? An 18 year old girl does not seem to be the best robbery victim as someone that might have a lot of money, but I think might be more of a sexual attack type victim. And the cincher is the sketch of the suspect. I think it is him! It is startlingly similar to several other sketches of the EAR/ONS, complete with Pendleton jacket and hair style. He almost killed the pursuing police officer by driving him off the road to escape, which seems extreme for the crime. He did escape, the policeman was very badly injured but survived, thank God.
I can't seem to copy over the sketch of this incident and news article of this incident. However, it has previously been posted on this site somewhere. Title of Sac Bee Article was "Speed Chase Crash Victim Still Serious".
I wonder if EAR/ONS changed his m.o. to kidnapping and that is why we think he has not offended after Janelle Cruz. We know he removed several victims from their homes in Sacramento and if he is the VR he was attempting to kidnap Beth Snelling and there is that mall incident mentioned above that I personally suspect might have progressed to a kidnapping.
