This is a continuation of the series of crime articles I found in the Goleta Valley Today archives in the fall and winter of 1979. Some of the incidents sound like EAR-ONS; others do not fit his MO:
* On Oct. 24 a San Bernardino girl was raped at knifepoint in a creekbed near North Patterson Avenue at around 6 p.m. The victim met a man while riding her bike on the Maria Ygnacio Creek trail (which lies to the east of Patterson Avenue). The girl said she was looking for her two sisters when the suspect claimed he had seen them. She entered the creekbed on foot and the man followed her, where he produced a six-inch knife and forced her to lie down on a board and raped her. The victim provided a vivid description of her attacker: 21-22 years old with blond, shoulder-length hair and a handlebar mustache. He was wearing a dark green jacket with “a stitched design, black shirt and a ring with a dark red gemstone on the middle ringer of his right hand.”
* A suspect wearing only a short tan coat was seen peeping through the rear window of a Cordoba Road sorority house at 10:35 p.m. Nov. 1. He was said to be “engaging in lewd conduct.” Cordoba Road is in the heart of Isla Vista.
* On Sunday, Nov. 4, a 43-year-old San Vicente Drive woman was grabbed from behind by a man who threatened to kill her. The resident said she was walking to her brother-in-law’s house at 2 a.m. when the attacker put his hands over her eyes. After struggling with him, she broke free and “fled down San Vincente (sic) without looking back.” San Vicente Drive is south of Hollister Avenue a few blocks east of south Patterson Avenue.
* A 28-year-old Dartmoor Avenue resident reported receiving a midnight call from a man threatening to kill her Nov. 7. She said the man sounded like the same person who called her the week before making threats. Dartmoor Avenue is in northwest Goleta.
* A 16-year-old northwest Goleta resident was raped near San Pesaro Way on Sun., Nov. 12. The teen-ager was walking her bicycle on a bike path when the assailant grabbed her from behind and pulled her to the ground. She said the attacker tore off her clothes and raped her on a hill next to the bike path.
* A 47-year-old Dorado Drive resident reported Nov. 18 that someone entered his garage twice in the past week and rearranged items. Also, a 14-year-old Dorado Drive girl reported receiving a threatening phone call. The sheriff’s department said the teen-ager thought the caller was a high school acquaintance.
* A 42-year-old Nueces Drive resident reported Nov. 20 receiving an obscene phone call in the afternoon. (Nueces Drive is in an area east of Turnpike Avenue.)
* Also on Nov. 22, a 37-year-old St. Ives Place resident (northwest Goleta) reported receiving an obscene phone call shortly before noon from a man who said he was “reading Penthouse magazine and calling numbers at random.”
* A 25-year-old Mission Canyon woman reported being raped on Nov. 22. The victim said a man was waiting for her in a darkened stairway inside her home at around 2:15 a.m. She was attacked soon after her boyfriend left. The woman tried to flee but the suspect, described as a white male adult, caught her and raped her on the stairway landing inside the house.
* An Oxford Place woman reported receiving about 15 annoying phone calls a day between Nov. 21 and 24. Oxford Place is near Berkeley Road.
* Two homes on Berkeley Road were broken into and ransacked between 10:15 am and 3:30 pm. Wed., Nov. 28. Nothing stolen. Also, homes on Merida and Hanna drives (both homes just south of Berkeley Road) were broken into and ransacked during the same day.
* A Chilton Way (sic) resident reported in early December 1979 that an intruder tried to break in but fled when the occupant “interrupted” him. (There is no Chilton Way in Goleta/Santa Barbara; however, there is a Chilon Way near San Marcos High School near Turnpike and Hollister avenues.)
* Also in early December an Aberdeen Avenue resident (neighborhood north of Fairview Avenue) reported an attempted break-in around 10:30 p.m. The resident was on the phone when she heard a noise in the back of her house. When she went to investigate, she confronted a “young man with curly black hair” entering through the back door. The suspect fled.
* A Berkeley Road resident reported that someone had been climbing into her backyard while she was at work and unleashing her German Shepherd early January 1980.
* A Goleta resident reported receiving 12 consecutive obscene phone calls in the morning hours, also in early January 1980.
-- I think the "rearranged" stuff in the garage sounds ear-like. . .calls as well. . .
