I want to make a new thread to be sure everyone sees this:
John from Ione was telling the truth. There really is an urban legend in Ione. He is not a poi, he was a helpful person. The caller was not the EAR/ONS trying to cast suspicion on John either.
It all started after the show, that I called the tiny local Ione police department to see if such an incident happened and the woman who answered the phone said she was working there at the time, but she said she remembered nothing about a shoot out or a trial or the urban legend. Really, it happened in down town Ione and you were working at the time and you don't remember something that must have been major news and a resulting trial with 3 men accused and acquited of MURDER!?
Well, that made me think this story must be false.
I called the Amador Sheriff's office this morning and a very helpful clerk looked up murders in Ione and in 1980 there were none on her books but in 1979 she thought there were none but on second look couldn't say because the way things were entered back then she couldn't tell if it was a murder.
Next I called the county newspaper, the Amador Ledger and talked to the editor. He told me nobody working there was working there back then, but would look into it. I need to call him and tell him not to bother.
I called the downtown Ione Fire Department, Station #1 a couple of days ago and the person that answered said he was not allowed to give me any information and that I need to call City Hall and be transferred to the Fire Captain's voice mail and the Captain would have to return my call. Still, no call from the captain.
I called Tilly's this morning and the girl said to call back in a few hours when some regular patrons will be coming in, so now I won't bother.
This morning I called an outlaying Fire Department and a young sounding man answered and was going to get the captain to call me back. When I mentioned what the call was about he said that YES!!! he remembered that story. Somebody WAS killed in front of the downtown fire department in a shoot out and there was a trial of 3 people that were acquited and that a map was rumored to have been found with the EAR victim's address on it and that there was an urban legend that the victim was the EAR because of the map and because after that the rapes stopped.
I updated him telling him that DNA does connect the EAR to the Original Nightstalker case and that the EAR became a serial killer and was known to have murdered someone in So. Cal in 1986.
Now I'd like to know what's up with that woman in the PD not remembering if she claims she was working then?
I am pretty bummed out but I really want to emphasize that John from Ione was a truth teller and was just relating what the urban legend was and was trying to help the victim Jane by telling her that maybe her attacker was dead.
Darn it! I really was hoping we had a very hot lead. So disappointed.
