I find it very odd that nobody from Ione has come along to share this information / rumor / legend before now.

John made it sound like the whole town was abuzz with this knowledge. So where are they?

  I feel satisfied that John's story was verified by an independent person.  I take this fireman at his word that he has heard about the legend.  I've done quite a bit of calling.  Someone else that is not satisfied with the answer can pick up the phone and call the various firestations and/or bars.  I called the one that was the closest to downtown Ione because I had no luck with getting through to the downtown one, had to leave a message for the chief.  No call back.  The other fire station, is less formal and a random fireman picked up the phone and said the chief was in and out but had no problem chatting with me.  Calling again perhaps a still different fireman will answer and you will have your third verification.

I applaud you for not being satisfied and wanting to chase down this lead sfbay if you want to.  Calling Tilly's right around the corner from the fire station when there are a bunch of locals in the bar in the afternoon might be a good idea too.  Good luck.

You want a wilder conspiracy theory?  The motorcyclist was killed by EAR  or family /friend of his,and  EAR is the guy who plants the map to get him or family/friend off...Maybe John from Ione still needs to be looked at?

If you're on a jury and they tell you this maybe the sick freak raping women in Sacramento? I know I would be thinking he deserved it..just a wild theory..

For my theory to work?...There has to be a freaking so called map,and not just somebody in court saying they saw a map,but it was not collected or thrown out...Which is what I bet went on in court..I really find it hard to believe there was a physical piece of EAR evidence that the media didn't jump all over at the time..

That is an excellent point and LE would know about this also and I've been told they don't.  So back to urban legend I'm afraid.   I am also not a lawyer but I've seen enough t.v. shows to think that a map wouldn't be admissible, because it would have nothing to do with the self defense justification.   John from Ione waffled on where the map was found, which at first I found suspicious but now I'm thinking he just heard a rumor of a map and really didn't know. 

I hope Sfbay does follow up on this to be absolutely certain.  There should be court records of the trial for sure.  It was a murder trial, so I doubt they would be thrown out just because the 3 defendants were found not guilty.

I do indeed know what slander is, a verbal remark that could be damaging to one's reputation. However, I feel I should've said "liable" instead(I believe would be the term), as this is print and not actually speaking. For that I apologize.

As for the leads, I'm not saying that his story and the proof behind it isn't important. I agree with Sandia in the sentiment that you are in the right looking into it. What you yourself is doing is not my concern. My concern is that people are looking at him a little too seriously as a suspect with no shred of evidence to support it.

I also agree that the sooner some confirmation comes forth that he is a just some guy who was interested in a radio show, the better for everyone involved. That's not what I am trying to prevent.

The reason people may be reluctant to "remember" the shooting is because it is a small town that may be wary of outsiders coming in and asking for dirt. It's also possible they knew one or more of the families involved and would rather not comment on what was obviously a controversial tragedy.

My guess regarding John in Ione and his failure to leave contact info is that John had second thoughts about his phone call.

John, if you are reading this register and post on this forum. You may have information about the EAR crimes (without realizing it) that helps ID this creep.
