For someone as detail-oriented and focused on total control as the EARONS, he relied on improvisation an awful lot, especially with regards to his tools and accessories. All of the murder weapons except for the gun were, to my knowledge, taken from the property of the attacks. A significant number of the EAR attacks also used ties that were taken from around the house, mainly shoelaces and torn strips of towel (side note: who would ever think to use strips of towel as ties? I'm surprised by the stories of him ripping the towel into strips, as it would be difficult to do with only your hands).
He seemed to bring his own gun, knife, and burglary tools, but based on the variety of these described in different attacks, we can't be sure where he obtained them. The same could be said for his various masks and maybe even the clothes and accessories he wore. Other burglaries and theft in general are definite possibilities as to how he obtained these. He definitely stole bikes from other homes, even immediately prior to an attack.
In most comparable cases, the attacker has a "kit" that he brings to ensure he'll have everything he'll need. Though the EAR did have his own "kits" as described above, he either didn't bring everything he needed or chose not to use his own materials in every instance. In some cases, where he had broken into homes in advance, it would seem he knew what was available to him and he may have even staged certain items for later use, so that isn't necessarily true improvisation. It did still require him to pull from his immediate environment, though, and trust that he could find what he needed in the moment.
This is all in contrast to the fact that his core behavior was far from improvised. As others have pointed out, he had a script and he stuck to it in most instances. Everything from his words to his movements to the rapes themselves followed a distinct pattern throughout the many attacks. He would occasionally deviate and eat something or meddle with something in the house that wasn't typical of him, but even those examples happened enough to reflect some kind of premeditation or pattern.
Perhaps using whatever he could from the scene of the crime was part of the thrill for him. He was tying his victims up with their own materials, having sex with them against their will on their own beds, eating the victims' own food, and later he killed them with their own tools and objects. It happened too often to not be a fetishistic component of the attacks.
Would anyone be willing to try and compile a list of instances where he chose to improvise? Items he used during the attack that were taken from the house/property he was currently in? Items stolen from other locations?
