Rapist Strikes Again. Twelfth Time In Fifteen Months. The so-called East Area Rapist attacked and raped a young woman resident of the Madison Avenue-Sunrise Boulevard area early today in the twelfth assault attributed to the man in the last fifteen months. “It was exactly the same as all the rest,” said a sheriff ’s detective. Officers said the rapist gained entrance to the twenty-five year old woman’s home shortly after midnight, bound her with rope and raped her “several times.”

The woman told officers she was asleep when the man entered her home, apparently through an unlocked door. Because it was dark, she was not able to provide a full description of her attacker. However, she did say he threatened her with an ice pick. She also said he wore gloves–as the suspect has in most of the other attacks in the east area of the county and city dating back to October, 1975. Officers said the victim is separated from her husband and was home alone. In other attacks, the rapist always has struck when the women, most of them married, were alone in the early morning hours.

It was the second attack by the man within a week. Last Wednesday morning a rapist forced his way into the home of a pregnant woman. Sheriff ’s officials have assigned six detectives to the investigation full-time. City police have three detectives working full-time on their case. Following the assault in the city last week, police and sheriff ’s detectives met to coordinate the search. According to authorities, the rapist always has struck between eleven p.m. and six forty-five a.m. Detectives say there are indications some of the victims’ homes were watched before the attacks.

35 years ago, the EAR attacked his 13th victim (listed as #15 in the newspaper article). This is the attack where the victim got hold of the EAR's gun. A suspicious white van was seen in the area by the victim's husband as he was leaving for work.

This is one where the victim's husband had warned her as he left that morning about a white van parked at the schoolyard that didn't belong there. She was also one of the few victims to fight back, trying to get his gun, until she was pummelled into submission.

The EAR attacked his 16th victim 35 years ago today. There was no newspaper article on this attack. This was the first known attack committed by the EAR with a male present in the home. Because of that, investigators did not initially believe that this was an EAR attack. This attack would not be publicly acknowledged until May 1977.

Greg one thing we may know is that this pervert was not pawning the stuff that he took. The L/E in Sac was constantly checking pawn shops and other sources of exchanging stolen items for cash. Nothing came up. So when he made statements to the victims about what he was going to do with some of the items that were being taken from them. Maybe he was lying. This may be an indication that he was planting false information to the victims. What I am hoping for was that there was a slip up. Maybe he unintentionally said something which was true.


No doubt he kept them as some sick keepsake, and in the case of their names and addresses to still put the fear in to them he was coming back at some point.
As you read Sudden Terror, and the accounts and statements people give, a few place him over 25 - 30, but many seem to go for the age range between 18-25. I couldn't help but thinking if I followed that line of thought and re-read some of the incidents that there were times his immaturity showed through. He was evil and cunning, but he clearly in terms of physical attacks was fairly weak due to the way he had to restrain people with the use of weapons. Without a weapon he would probably have been very easy to overpower and harm. So he amy have been athletic, but was physically unable to defend himself.

You just have to think though. If this guy lived out of a van, chances are that at least once or twice he would have maybe, smelled a little bit you know. Such a confined space, not always the chance to bathe properly... it just seems that someone would have said relayed that he smelled or had a bit of BO or whatever other kind of scent you can imagine. So far in reading I haven't seen anything of that nature.

JAG, some people claim in ST that he smeeled of body odour and I am sure one account said he smelt strongly of aftershave. I really think it was his games to keep LE at a distance that he varied certain aspects of his crimes in terms of things he said or acted, but kept to the basic blueprint. It was all part of his sick make up and no doubt he saw it as a joke.

Yeah, I'm not too far into it at this point, but have read many of the rape stories. So I'll move forward. But that could be an indication then that he was trying to cover an odor... too much aftershave. Or, who the heck knows what... this guy was a strange cat to begin with.

I am not trying to make him out to be a criminal mastermind, but he clearly did enough to throw law enforcement off catching him. He was smarter than your usual criminal. I just think that even though he was worked up during his attacks he was still a cunning and evil enough SOB to throw in certain bits of misinformation. Plus the lack of co-operation between LE agencies didn't exactly hamper him much either. He was smart to an extent and lucky to another.

I think it's more likely EAR lived at a fixed address given that he made frequent use of the telephone and, in one call, expressed great concern about his phone number being traced. He fitted in well, it seems, and didn't attract attention. It points to a normal day life. If he lived a nomadic existence, what was he doing with all this jewellery he was stealing? Why did he sometimes leave behind cash? I suspect he looked pretty normal for all intents are purposes (during the day).

But during the night, he became his alter ego and he played a character, the macho man he wished he was. The clenched teeth, the hissing, the angry voice, the brutal lover -- it was an act. Like he was reading from a script, one victim described it as. Was the EAR an actor? Something to do with the performing arts? I would have liked to see a sketch of Jack from Quincy, the singer.
I have to say that I agree with most of your posts. Why do you think earons kept losing his erection during the rapes, or never got fully erect? Some people thought he had diabetes, but cant you tell that from his DNA? (I really dont know.)

One did smell aftershave on her window after a he had tried and failed to get in though it.
He had what one girl said was either 'b.o. or bad breath.' So he may have worked up a sweat creeping around outside, or have eaten a pizza with onions for dinner that night.
But as i recall, a lot of the victims said they smelled no identifiable odor on him. Other than the baby lotion.

The official victim count changed throughout the 1970's. The list was revised several times before the EAR finally moved on to Southern CA. As of April 15, 1977, there were two rapes that we considered EAR attacks and later removed from the official list. One was in Oct. of 1975 and another was in 1976. If you refer to the EAR attack on 3/18/77, that is officially victim #15. The attack is listed as number 17 in the newspaper article. The attack on 4/2/77 was not originally considered an EAR attack because a male was present in the home. Up to that point, the EAR was attacking when the male was not present. The article posted here does not even mention a male being present but there was one present in this attack as well. The EAR was now attacking couples.

So how in the world did EAR know that an attractive 25 year-old woman would be here? On page 229, the text says that the woman "had a very uneasy feeling while driving to" the man's house.

The implication is that her attacker was following her in his car. That doesn't sound like EAR to me. Yet, every other aspect of this particular attack is consistent with EAR behavior. The confrontation came as the woman was leaving, at about 12:15 a.m. "The dogs were the first to go out the door and immediately turned to the right and began barking. She could see the hair on the dogs' back stand straight up."

The EAR was probably lurking nearby and saw this couple park and get out of their car or cars. I can think of no other likely scenario that would explain how he would know that she would be there.

That is an important observation. So the question needs to be ask (and I ask these questions all the time): How did the EAR end up in that neighborhood? Did he follow the victim to the neighborhood -OR- was he prowling that neighborhood? If he was prowling the neighborhood and ended up there by happenstance, what brought him to that neighborhood in the first place?

Keep in mind, this attack was not the first attack in Orangevale; EAR attacked there one month prior, at a house merely 1.5 blocks away.

In that instance, the victims had been at the Thunderbird Drive-In earlier that evening. That drive-in was located at 11091 Folsom Blvd., Rancho Cordova.

Things that stood out for me
in this article are the fact that the description of EAR is that of an experienced burglar with an age estimate of 25-35.

The article quotes the detective saying EAR committed acts of sexual perversions on the woman - does anyone have specific details of these acts EAR carried out on the woman? This is of interest because in the "MSNBC investigates" episode on EAR the profiler and psychologists mentioned that usually the offender will carry out the acts he did on the victims with a consensual sexual partner therefore if such details are revealed a woman might recognize a boyfriend who liked carrying those sex acts in their relationship back then in te 70s

Some Unique Behaviors Only Used Once..
Some of the sexual acts EAR used in his rapes were only done one time. It is my opinion EAR watched couples being intimate and then forced his victim to engage in an act he witnessed her participating in with her husband//boyfriend. Just my opinion.g

Unless thiings were held back, ears was very conventional in his sex "perversions". He didnt experiment much. I do doubt that he saw & copied though. Its unlikely that he saw a woman having sex with he high heels on and copied it. Its more likely that in his years of porn & media consumption, that was a minor fantasy of his. The way he tied sherri domingo, too. He saw that in bondage porn, he didnt witness it or make it up.

Earons, in the criminal world, is a shark. And like a shark, is territorial. He was spending a lot of time prowling and attacking in that area. He wasmost likely peeping into the home while he was out creeping around and liked what he saw. And maybe also that they were a couple. As far as he knew, they were married, and the risk of anyone else coming into the house was nil. He was probably watching them through the windows waiting for them to go to bed, and when she gathered up her stuff and headed for the door, he realized his mistake and ran around to the door to meet them there and push them back into the home.

This is also an example of what I was talking about when I said ears could be impulsive. He was a class A psychopath, not a mastermind. Yes, he was OCD and organized, but he was also impulsive, and again, sex(+violence) was fueling his crimes. If he got an erection for her and decided he wanted her, he was bold enough to try something new to get her right then. After all, he probably didnt have his car parked right there and he wouldnt be able to follow her home to where she lived. So, it was now or never.

Too bad there wasnt a mention of every breed of the victim's dogs. It sounded like a lot of puppies and poodles, lap dogs. A poodle isnt going to attack a man who breaks into a house. A terrier might, though. And he never surprised an adult german shepherd inside a home, I noticed.

Back to the idea of copying what the victims did sexually: He did not witness the victim having sex with her high heels on that night for sure, because they had come home tired and went directly to sleep. Also, wearing high heels during sex isnt a usual thing, even if you do it, you dont do it every night, and I would believe she would have mentioned it.. as in, You dont think he saw me and my bf doing this the night before? last week ?, or whatever. And because it was a one-off on ears m.o., the cop would have/should have asked those questions himself.
Also, in this particular case, ears may have been hiding out in their garage during the time they came home and went to bed.

Only one couple in ST mentions that they were engaged in foreplay when ears broke in. He obviously must have seen it, but he only engages in vaginal and anal sex(RAPE), and that only briefly. Nothing that resembles foreplay. The victim is asked specifically about it and says no oral sex happened and he only touched her breast, didnt fondle.

Close Encounter with Law Enforcement

Something happened to the EAR between the last attack on 5/14/77 and 5/17/77. Some encounter with law enforcement *ed the EAR off and set off his rant about "those pigs". That is a pretty narrow window. We're talking about a 4 day span of time. Also, if the EAR intended on killing anyone in Northern CA, it would have been here. The only murderous rage exhibited here was directed toward "those pigs" and his threat to kill his next two victims stemmed from whatever "those pigs" did to * him off.

This is also where the case went off the tracks with the release of the phony artist's conception. This victim also received one of the post-offense phone calls from the EAR and was supposedly mentioned in the EAR poem.

Ironically, I think that law enforcement contacted the EAR (or maybe Mommy D"EAR"est) and just didn't realize it.

I know by this time he was really following the press coverage, and was quite aware of where L.E. was concentrating in the vicinity.....Ear slowed down for some reason around this time ....I wonder if L.E. got close to him?.....I bet they have his name.....

Hours after the Sacramento East area rapist attacked his 23rd victim,investigators yesterday released a psychological profile that said he suffers from "homosexual panic"and tries to prove his manhood.Chief Sheriff's Deputy Fred Reese told a newsconference, "I frankly hope someone blows this guy's head off in the commission of one of these things."

As far as I know there are no archives/police logs available to the public. I do not know if LE ever looked at any police contacts made between 5/14/77 and 5/16/77. I do know that by the time the EAR made his infamous threat, the panic was on and LE soon lost control of the investigation. They were swamped with calls about the bogus composite sketch. Once that genie was out of the bottle, there was no putting it back in.

One thing that occurred to me. There was increased TV coverage of the EAR case because the EAR was now attacking couples. It is possible that the EAR was upset because the news was upsetting Mama EAR. He said that the "news scares my mommy" twice. He reiterated this point during his next attack on 5/28/77. During the 5/17/77 attack, his message was confused. One victim said that the EAR would kill two people if he saw it on the news. The other victim said that the EAR said he would kill two people if he didn't see it on the news.

The EAR cleared up the confusion from the 5/17/77 attack during his next attack on 5/28/77. He told Victim #22 that he would kill two people if he saw a report of the attack on the TV news because it "scares my mommy".

This may have been what was upsetting the EAR between 5/14/77 and 5/17/77. Hard to tell. He was either extremely cunning and convincing in the stories he made up to manipulate everyone (recall that he was near tears both times when he mentioned "mommy") -OR- he was a real-life "Psycho" who had serious Norman Bates-type mommy issues. Recall that in later attacks, he would say, "mommy I don't want to do this anymore" and would be crying. Hard to determine if it was all an act.

One of the victims mentioned that the sobbing seemed real and not put-on. I dont know what to think. Is she a victim who has a heightened sense of whats happening around her during the course of the traumatic event? Or did her mind play a trick on her during the stress of the traumatic event? Im more likely to think the former, but only because that happens more often than not.


But why would he do anything in front of a victim to make himself look weak? He was all about being in control, not vulnerable. There are other ways of misdirecting the cops that dont include him hamming it up by pretending he's Norman Bates. How many Norman Bates-type leads did he think the police would actually find? (I know, that one creepy kid. But that was luck!) Wouldnt it be more logical to hint that he was in a certain type of job, or he lived in a certain place by saying or dropping something at the crime scene to misdirect them? Rather than putting on a melodramatic scene that only lasted 3seconds and came from out of nowhere? If his fake clue was more generic, it would give the cops a rougher more time-consuming job of finding the rapist.

The EAR attacked his 24th victim. The EAR went dormant during the summer of 1977, apparently sent underground by the intense patrolling by law enforcement and the EARS CB patrols. This was in response to his threat to kill his next two victims back in May of 1977. After his summer recess, he turned up in Stockton, CA on 9/6/77. He resumed his attacks in the Sacramento area 34 years ago today.

This is the composite sketch associated with this case. It is of a suspicious person seen in the area after the attack. Hard to believe that the EAR would stick around in the area after an attack but he may have been emboldened by the fact that the SCSD released the phony "artist's conception" which looked nothing like him.

Another point of note: the EAR's attack of victim #24 was opportunistic. It was her boyfriend's residence. She had argued with him earlier and had returned to her apartment in Rancho Cordova. She and her boyfriend made up and returned to his place. No hang-up phone calls. No bizarre burglaries. Her mother did live in the area. (Closer to other victims in the area). The EAR may have followed her from her mother's place of residence to her boyfriend's place of residence.

This scenario seems very similar to Offerman/Manning.

Two questions
Firstly, I am confused by Arch stating above that this may have been a crime of opportunity and that the victim was followed to her boyfriend's home from her own apartment. I am confused because EAR/ONS had already apparently been in the boyfriend's apartment evidenced by the removal of the bullets from the gun ahead of time. Am I missing somthing? Arch can you clarify why you think that. #2 My thinking on calling the victim by her sister's name is that EAR/ONS was bluffing and trying to make her think he knew who she was, probably trying to terrify her more, is that the accepted theory?

I do not believe that the EAR followed her from her apartment. She lived in Rancho Cordova. I believed that the EAR was in the area of La Riviera and either saw her earlier in the day and followed her from her mother's house (who lived in the area of the attack) or simply saw Victim #24 and her boyfriend returning from her apartment.

By opportunistic, I mean that he did not attack her at her place of residence (where she could be expected to be). She could not have been expected to be at her boyfriend's house. There weren't the usual "hang-up" phone calls which indicates that the EAR had been watching his victim for a while. There weren't the usual pre-261 break-ins.

The assumption is that the EAR removed the bullets ahead of time. I believe that the EAR (after challenging the male to go for the gun) took the gun and removed the bullets after the victims were tied up. There was a 2nd firearm under the bed which had bullets in it. The male victim ran outside and fired the gun (some say to get attention; others say that it was in frustration and anger).

Not sure what the accepted theory is regarding the EAR using the victim's sister's name. The EAR had access to the victim's CDL, so he was smart enough to know what her real name was. IMO, the EAR was playing his usual headgames.

If there are grad pictures or grad books from that period in school libraries in Sac and surrounding areas schools maybe we can take a look at them to see if there are any students who look like this sketch.

Interesting picture, I couldnt help but wonder what they look like now considering that they looked so young and fresh faced back then...............

it will be like finding a needle in a hay stack if this avenue is pursued but I think it could be a good approach to revealing the EAR because I kinda have a sneaking suspicion that if EAR ever encountered LE while "out and about" he could have probably provided them with a false name and address whereas if you look through high school year books and similar publications were he may have been photographed before his activities its very likely that his real name will be in there which could also facilitate tracking him down . The picture on the link is quite interesting especially the two blond haired guys at the back row (fourth from left and the third from the right)..............

Private swim teams

There are lots of private neighborhood and public city swim teams all over the Central Valley. Usually the kids who start in them swim until they either get bored with swimming or get to High School and join the HS team. It's a wonderful program because you really have to get in shape and work hard. You better have a strong work ethic 'cause swimming isn't for lazy folks. Now having done my unpaid commercial for youth swimming looking at pics of swim teams from Visalia (or Sac) and the surrounding is really a good idea. Because it's also a great sport for loners and people who can't play on teams. And 1962 might be a good year to start because if EAR was say 13-14-15 then he'd be just about the right age. Good thinking. Might want to cross reference any POI with someone who coached teams later in life. I'm thinking that if this mook is still breathing he's one of those pillar of the community guys.

I agree he has got to be one of the "Pillar of Community guys" that is why we have not been able to catch him as yet. He does not stand out. I am going to try to check to see if there were any swim competitions or swim teams in training in the areas where the ons murders took place.

The EAR attacked his 25th victim 34 year ago, today. It was the start of a new cluster in the Foothill Farms area. As far as I can tell, whenever the EAR started a new cluster, something drew him to the area. So, I feel that this attack is significant and needs to be looked at closer. I am already seeing a connection to construction and the Mather area.

Thank you for the response. I remember noticing that on the list at your website, and for some reason, that particular attack stood out. I don't recall him--prior to this attack--ever implementing forced entry the same night of an attack. What I wonder is whether or not homeowners noticed this prior to the attack--probably not since it was a successful attack.

Perhaps I'm in a minority, but I know the in's & out's of my house, and if there was forced entry I'd notice it. It sure seems like many people were quick to dismiss such things.

He also forced his way into #29 and #30's house. Literally kicked in the door. I remember that attack when it hit the news. It was pretty frightening. It seemed as though no matter what precautions one took, the EAR would find a way around them (as mentioned by Sandia). Welcome to EAR hysteria. Recall that he confronted some of the victims outside their homes at gun point. That is why I initially thought that one of those encounters involved the town hall couple. I assumed that the town hall couple had taken all necessary precautions to prevent the EAR from breaking and entering and therefore forced him to accost them at gunpoint.

I was wrong on that one. The town hall couple apparently didn't take advantage of all the advice that the SCSD was giving to citizens to help keep the EAR from waking you up in the middle of the night. The one thing that I've learned through the years about victimology is that no victim ever truly believes that they will be a victim.

Sure, they will take half-measures to protect themselves (in a high profile case such as the EAR). But in their hearts, they never really believe that they will become a victim. Statistically, they are correct. Those that are aware that they could become a victim, take the proper precautions and in most cases, are prepared should they ever be confronted with a predator. After one has been victimized (or had to deal with people who were victimized), you begin to take the necessary precautions to reduce the odds of your becoming a victim (and also training yourself to properly react to someone attempting to victimize you).

So in the instance where the EAR forced entry, the fact that they did not install deadbolts on the door allowed the EAR to force entry in the first place. They took half-measures. But I understand where they are coming from. We shouldn't live in a world where we need to lock ourselves in a self-imposed prison at night. But we do live in such a world and it is probaly wise to install anti-burglary devices. We can live in denial or we could face reality and proactively protect ourselves.

Does not eliminate the risk of being victimized. It just reduces the risk. The EAR (and many others) has proven that time and again.

Ah, I see! So in these instances he literally kicked in the door--I recall this vividly in January 1978 when he kicked in the door on a pair of teenage girls. He was always brazen, but he was constantly escalating, morphing into the complete monster he finally became when he reemerged in SoCal in '79.

I like what you wrote about awareness--protection from victimization--being "a state of mind." You're spot on about that, Arch. I consider myself fortunate in that regard; my father was always vigilant towards such preparations--I'm certain this is due to his military background--and the gene passed itself along to me. I agree with you on your other point: statistically, the chances of becoming a victim are "small;" nobody should have to live with fear, the kind of fear EAR/ONS set in Sacramento in the late 1970s, but ultimately, it's up to the individual to be proactive about such vigilance against victimization. Unfortunately, the citizens of NoCal were unlucky to have been embroiled in the mess known as the EAR--he chose Sacramento as one of his first stomping grounds.

One observation about these blitz, kick-in-the-door attacks: like so many other instances, these had to be strictly opportunistic moments. He wouldn't dare kick in the door on a home owner he'd know to be armed, or in some way prepared against such a crime. I have always wondered how many attacks he aborted after having done his research based on the conclusion that he'd risk too much going up against a homeowner vigilant towards victimization. "Victory always favors the prepared mind."

If you ever have to use deadly force in your home make sure the perp is in the house and make sure he/she is dead. Long before EARONS was wreaking havoc on whole neighborhoods in NorCal there were intruder issues. We had a sort of pre neighborhood watch program and the Deputy Sheriff who spoke told us that. Right out in public. BTW if you live in Sacramento County the new Sheriff has announced that he will be much more "friendly" about CCW permits than previously.

Fund LE, Fund jails and prisons, top priority
My suggestion is vote and fund budget for jails and prisons. I would put this funding as top priority in the budget. Lock these criminals up and protect the public. If we get very tough on criminals the word will get out and it will be a deterrent. Proof of punishment being a deterrent is in Singapore where people are caned. It is so strick there that it is a very safe place to live and very clean because there are strick punishments for everything, even litering. I don't think our society has the stomach for Singapore justice yet we would all live safe, carefree lives and not have to buy alarm systems and guns. I have been watching a lot of crime t.v. lately and it is so alarming the evil that is out there and if you are a young pretty teenage girl or even an attractive woman, you are in danger! They are closing jails in my area and that means a lot of criminals are going to be roaming the streets as the article LadyofTheLake furnished and so dramatically points out. It is going to be getting worse. I can't help but think of Lindsey Lohan. They aren't going to put her in jail, if they are releasing the people in the above mentioned article. She can just continue to thumb her nose at the judge and the judge will keep saying, this is the last time I'm telling you, this is your last (and 76th warning)!.

Nice! It's awesome that you're going out to get your first firearm. Studies have shown that women not only take to paper punching, but it's been found to be very relaxing for them. F1 and A76 have offered good advice to you, and I would only add the following:

1. Find a weapon which you are most comfortable with; especially, find one that fits your hand well--i.e., that isn't too big for your hand.

2. If I may, I would recommend to you a revolver as they tend to be a bit easier to maintain than autoloaders. I would highly recommend the .357 Magnum; it's stopping power is tremendous, and if you're more comfortable with lighter pistol loads, you can shoot .38 Special through it instead of the full-house Magnum loads. Experiment with both, and for self-defense: jacketed hollowpoints for certain.

3. Practice. Practice. Practice--that's the fun part!

I agree with you! The proof is Florida. It was getting bad down there when the German tourists kept getting killed (it seems they were always German). The word was getting back to Europe, that Florida was a deadly place. Florida armed the citizens, and it worked! Now the criminals don't know who they can victimize, they don't know who has guns and will fight back.

Hi Sandia--


Brief breakdown for you: the .38 Special is a medium size pistol cartridge. The .357 Magnum is also a medium size pistol cartridge--the difference between the two is that the .357 (its projectile diameter the same as the .38 Special) has a higher pressure (the moment when the trigger is pulled and the gun discharges, thus igniting the powder in the cartridge) than the .38 Special. As a result, the .357 projectile has a greater velocity and greater stopping power than the .38 Special. With a bit of practice, the .357 Magnum is very manageable.

You could attach a laser sighting if you so choose on any pistol you purchase, including any revolver chambered in .38 Special/.357 Magnum; however, my suggestion would be to take lessons, and practice whenever you can. I'm sure it seems heady now, but once you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake.

Smith & Wesson makes an excellent line of personal protection firearms. The S&W Bodyguard 38 has a built-in laser sight. I would recommend a firearm with a built-in laser especially for anyone not familiar with firearms. A revolver is easier to shoot and generally speaking more reliable. Another added benefit of the laser is that anyone who sees that dot on them will usually cr*p their pants. It has a deterrent effect but one should never pull out a firearm unless one has the full knowledge and intent to use it (meaning you believe that your life is in imminent danger).

I am a firm believer in law abiding citizens being the first line of defense against the criminal element. I think it was a mistake to make the citizenry reliant upon law enforcement for their protection. If nothing else, the EAR/ONS demonstrates that law enforcement cannot protect society from the criminal element. By their nature, they are reactionary. They come a-knocking after the crime has been committed. Rarely are they there before to prevent the crime in the first place.

The law should be that anyone who is a responsible, law abiding citizen and demonstrates the skill and aptitude to handle a firearm should be able to legally conceal and carry a firearm if they so choose. So long as the citizen continues to be responsible and law abiding, they should be able to continue carrying a concealed weapon (again, if they so choose).

They should have similar training as a peace officer, they need to know and understand the circumstances under which they can legally use deadly force and when they cannot. Anyone who shows that they cannot be responsible and law abiding, should have this right (or privilege) revoked (such as spouse abusers).

My feeling is that it is the criminals who should fear the citizens, not the other way around.

Arch makes a good point about the laser sight--especially if you're new to firearms. I would emphasize what he mentioned earlier; the golden rule of firearms: when you point the weapon, always be prepared to destroy what the weapon is aimed at. This especially holds true if you're ever placed in a situation where you must exercise deadly force on an attacker.

The EAR attacked his 27th victim 34 years ago today. His victim was 13 years old. It was the 2nd attack on La Riviera Drive. Several of the neighbors had received hang-up phone calls and there were the usual prowler incidents.

Some Inconsistencies

Yes, this attack is the one I have identified as attack number 30 (Stockton ... "Park Woods area"), described in Sudden Terror (ST) on pages 318-322 (paperback). Some inconsistencies in the article Arch posted and the article on pages 320-321 of ST probably can be attributed to different newspapers. ST fails to identify the date of this attack in its description pages, but does identify it as March 18th at back of book, on page 480.

Aside from the inconsistencies noted above, this particular EAR attack, as described in ST, references items that this message board doesn't seem to put much credence in, and I've never understood why.

Item 1: "an old faded van was seen in the Rivera Drive area" (ST, p.318). "The mother had seen a faded VW van parked across the street from ..." (ST, p.318).

Can't tell you how many times ST refers to a "van". Yet, this message board doesn't seem to talk about it ... at all. And though the "ear-ons" website shows an "Oldsmobile Coupe", a "Yellow Step-Side Pick Up", and a "VW Bug" in its "Update" section, there is nary a word about a ... van. Very strange. Why the apparent inconsistency?

Item 2: "It was him [EAR] ... Not a doubt in the world. He pulled his sobbing act again ..." (ST, p.321).

EAR's sobbing / crying is well documented in ST. Yet, LE and this message board seem to think this behavior is somehow ... an act ... a put-on behavior for the benefit of the victims. Why?

What evidence exists to support the idea that EAR's crying was "an act"?

Post-investigation analysis thus ignores "the van" and discounts "the crying".

I agree. There isn't any evidence to suggest it was an "act". To the contrary, the sobbing is consistent with the phone call to the counseling service - "I don't want to hurt these women anymore". He was reaching out for help.

31 and the other Stockton attack
What is the connection between Stockton 31 and 23. I-5 had recently gone through the west side of Stkn and a new housing area was built west of the new Interstate 5. Along with the new housing area that had lakes and waterways, it also had a new shopping center. A new supermarket, shopping center and a new marina with a cool restaurant overlooking the marina. Stkn 23 lived in that new housing area that hand cool marina street names like Merimac Circle, Harpers Ferry and Chesapeake Dr. People who lived east of I-5 had done their grocery shopping at places like Sanguinites Market on Hammer and Lower Sacramento Road. It was a market that was getting older and much smaller than the new one a few miles away that across the new freeway on Ben Holt Rd.
Did victims 23 and 31 frequent the same establishments?

A victim mentions she heard a van pull out of the driveway when he left, but i thought he didnt drive his car up to people's homes.

Is the reason people pass over the van sightings because earons mentions that he has a van to a few victims, and they think he is always trying to misdirect people away from the truth/him? why would he tell them he had a van, anyway> He did it more than once, maybe 3 or 4 times to different vcitims.

Sociopaths are compulsive liars, so Id expect ears to be, too, and unless you were around him a while, youd probably buy whatever he said as convincing.

However, the crying... is weird. I think this guy was young, fit, superdriven, and a meticulous planner. I also think he was a little frayed mentally, and not everything he did was a conscious misdirect. Its odd that he would choose to sob at the moments he did. Or sob at all, because to what purpose would it be as a misdirect? Would it make the cops go easier on him if he was caught? No. Did he even think they were buying all his misdirects? They werent. One misdirection, however, doenst confirm every odd thing he did or said as a misdirection. Earons may have just done a sobbing act because it amused him in some weird way, but again, why would he? He did everything else for a purpose.


Another thing that didnt make any sense as a misdirect, was talking to himself and saying, Im going to kill them. Im going to kill them. Because everything he did in his attacks was to keep the victims compliant, and the reason he stressed to them so much that he was just there for food and money was to make tem feel secure that he wasnt going to kill them, and thus getting them riled up. He would know damn well that if they thought they were going to get killed, they would try like hell to escape or attack him. And I doubt he did it to make it more of a challenge for himself, because he really wasnt keeping an eye on the woman who could hear him say that, aa=nd that woman was already out the door before he had a chance to shut it on her, and he had to go outside and drag her back indoors, which was a risk he obviously never wanted to take. So why would a guy with his level of planning and cunning say a thing like that out loud? Because he couldnt control himself from doing it?



As for the question of whether a psychopath of his porportions can also feel other things, like some remorse, that's a good question. Research on psychopathology would say, No way. But I dont know how broad that research is, considering that its pretty new and have they seen the whole range of psychopathy enough to make blanket pronouncements? I dont know.

This victim received hang up calls at her work. If the hang up calls were made by EAR, it suggests that he had surveilled her for awhile and that her house was not randomly chosen.

Could Modesto have been his home town?
Does anyone think that possibly Modesto could have been his home town? One scenario I am imagining is that he was in college in Sacramento. After school he went home to Modesto and struck (like Port mentioned above the victim got hang up calls at her work. That does sound like she was not random.) now that he has struck so close to home he has to throw LE off and strikes almost immediately (2 days later) in Davis. Two weeks go by and he can't control his urges so again he strikes in Modesto so now quick, quick to throw LE off only 1 day later in Davis, then 12 days later in Davis for good measure and then he takes 3 months off while in Modesto or while on vacation with his parents. I wonder if he stole the unusually large amount of $1,500 because now that he has graduated, he is expected to carry his own weight and go and get a job. Summer vacation over he starts his treck down the coast starting in Concorde and the East Bay area in October and then down to Goleta, searching for a job? The poem Excitement's Crave does give me the impression that he is educated. Just thought I'd throw that scenario out there, I know it is just one of many possibilities.

Review the CSUS academic calendar and then note the dates of the first Stockton and then the Modesto Davis series. These attacks could be consistent with someone heading north to Sac in the Fall and south to the valley in the summer.

Port -- Those school dates really are interesting. March 18, 1998 would have been a Saturday (Stockton attack), Monday, Mar 20 thru Friday, March 24, as you point out was Spring Recess. Arch previously pointed out that there were two additional attacks that were not mentioned in Sudden Terror, March 20 and March 28. March 28 would have been a Tuesday though. I don't think Arch mentioned where these two additional attack occurred. Then School out June 2 and Modesto attack June 5, 1978.
Lady -- I'm wondering if EAR/ONS rented or possibly stayed in motels. His first attack in Davis was 6/07/78 and his last was 7/06/78. After he moved over to the bay area, starting in Concord in 10/07/78 he jumped around so much and his last attack in Danville was 7/10/79 only 9 months later. Come to think of it though, he struck H/H in Goleta on 10/01/79--closely coinciding with a one year lease. I just can't visualize him leasing though, seems too stable and also would leave a paper trail, but definitely possible. Arch--can you tell us more about the attacks on March 20 and March 28, 1978? Where they occurred and anything you can share about them?

Somewhere I posted the wrong year as I recall. The attack on March 20th occurred in 1979 in Rancho Cordova. The March 28th (or 29th) 1978 attack was not an EAR attack. It was committed by an EAR copycat and I believe that there was an arrest in that case.

Interesting scenario !
I was also wondering about that 2 day gap...........either his urges were out of control or he was playing at something, your scenario certainly makes sense ! The stealing of a large sum of money is also interesting, I thought maybe since the guy now had to travel to his crime scenes he stole the money to help pay for fuel for his travel costs.......................
