The EAR attacked his 39th victim 33 years ago today. It was the 2nd attack in Contra Costa County occurring 6 days after his first attack in Concord. I would like to know why he stopped attacking victims in Concord. Was it because the CCC investigators were more thorough in their canvassing and they unknowingly encountered the EAR?

His next attack in Contra Costa County will be two weeks from now, in San Ramon. After he was seen in the backyard of a witness in San Ramon (and it was confirmed that the EAR was in San Ramon) no more attacks in San Ramon.

This is why he left Sacramento. There was a witness who saw him on the Sacramento River levee. There was a witness who could ID him in San Ramon. That seems to be his reason for leaving an area for good.

EAST BAY ATTACKS
We must remember when EAR attacked in the Bay Area he hit all over. There were no tight clusters of attacks like you saw in Rancho Cordova. IMO it is unlikely that he had a connection to these areas like he did in Rancho Cordova.

I understand one of the sketches is from San Ramon, the one with the darker, longer, curlier hair. Is that correct? and if so is that sketch from the woman who saw him in her back yard?

Unfortunately, the composite sketch from San Ramon did not come from the witness who saw the EAR in her backyard, during the day, without a ski mask on. It came from a witness who saw a suspicious person in the area. This person was later identified and determined not to be the EAR.

He did hit in clusters. He just abandoned the clusters once he was seen in those areas. The Concord attacks were very near each other. The San Jose attacks were very near each other. I believe this is the case with the Danville and Walnut Creek attacks. He continued his clusters in Goleta and Irvine.

The real question is why did he abandoned his clusters? It seems like once he was seen without his ski mask on (and could later be identified by a witness), he moved on, never to return.

Thank you Arch. I always thought that sketch looked very different from the rest. Have any other sketches that have been posted on this board been eliminated?
Also, about your theory that he abandoned the clusters once he had been clearly seen and vulnerable to being id'd if caught, I think you are right on. It fits his past history, as you said, and simply makes sense to me. Therefore, can you tell which sketches would coincide with these spottings that caused him to move on? It seems those would be the sketches to focus on.

Some of the Rancho Cordova attacks were practically on top of each other. You can barely throw a rock in RC and not hit a crime scene. These attacks were not only closely clustered but they were sustained for several years. If you add the confirmed EAR crimes and the probable EAR crimes in RC I believe the evidence is very compelling.


Is it likely in 1975 or 1976 EAR beleived that his crimes would be front page news and the subject of the most intensive manhunt in Sacramento history? I dont think so. The EMR crimes were barely reported. But by 1978 EAR knew he was being carefully watched and changed his strategy accordingly.

Hopefully when your website is updated later this year I hope that the confirmed and probable attacks will be reflected on the map. I think people will realize why I believe the that any potential POI with a RC background should be put on top of the list.

Composite Sketches Eliminated

As usual, nothing is simple with this case. Of the witness sightings of the person who most likely was the EAR, no one in LE bothered getting a composite sketch from the witness. The sightings where there is high confidence was in Carmichael (Del Dayo) on 10/17/76, on the Sacramento levee on 4/14/78 and in San Ramon on Nov. 1, 1978. In each of these cases, a composite sketch was not created. I have no explanation as to why.

Every other sketch was of a suspicious person seen in the area of the attack sometimes days before the attack. So the confidence is low that any of the suspicious persons seen are the EAR. Some of the composite sketches can be eliminated as being the EAR.

This sketch, which I refer to as the "Michael Bolton" sketch (many thanks SOE), can be eliminated as being of the EAR. It came from a 261 one that had none of the EAR's M.O./Signature. Additionally, the suspect was not wearing a ski mask during the commission of the crime. That's not EAR.

This sketch below most likely is not of the EAR. This suspect is too young to be the EAR, IMO. There is a small chance that I am wrong on this. This is definitely of a prowler seen on at least two occasions.

The San Ramon sketch below is of a suspicious person who was later identified and cleared of any involvement. I thought this came from the witness who saw the EAR in her backyard. Unfortunately, it did not. The San Ramon PD was too busy trying to convince this witness that she saw a teenager in the area and that is why no sketch exists of the person she saw who most likely was the EAR.

The enhanced Maggiore composite below released 4/16/78 is not of the Maggiore's shooter and therefore cannot be of the EAR (if the EAR committed the murders).

As of now, there is no composite sketch that can be considered with high confidence to be the EAR. There is a 1976 sketch that resembles the 1977 sketch below. I do not have enough infomation about the 1976 sketch but the 1977 sketch seen below is of a person seen in the area of the #24 EAR attack on 10/1/77.

It is possible that the 1977 sketch is the EAR because he may have been emboldened by the phony artist's conception released on 5/17/77. Also, there is a resemblance to the Maggiore sketch seen below released on 2/16/77. It may be of the same person, or the resemblance could have been enough to make the EAR avoid Rancho Cordova.

I have a good feeling about the way things are moving lately - although it is true that this board is not the easiest to navigate.


The zodiackiller message board is a fine example of how a case should be presented online - I wish that I had the skills to create a more user-friendly board for this tragic case.

I still cannot believe that LE failed to get a sketch from ALL THREE of the witnesses who actually saw EAR-ONS!!

It also almost defies belief that 1970s California was releasing serial rapists from jail after a few years, yet LE did not bother to investigate known sexual offenders!!!

IMHO when solved, the EAR-ONS case will ultimately become known in true-crime circles as 'THE CASE' and we will all look back at the many missed opportunities and seemingly moronic approach of LE.

Arch, thanks and another question about the sketches

Thank you Arch for clearing up the sketch situation. There previously was put up on the board all of the sketches. There were 5 little sketches posted side by side that I think looked quite similar. I am not sure if you know which ones I am referring to. If not, I will try to find them. I was wondering where they were from and if they were different versions of the same incident or from different incidents. They all look rather similar to the one above (which I refer to the dreamy eyed one, or the one with the vague look in the eyes, the one you thinks probably was too young.) They all had the exact same hair style and all appeared to be blond. One of them was wearing a plaid shirt and had a squarer face and a more evil glint in the eyes. Anyway do you have any info on those can you share. Thanks again Arch for all you do.

Because I haven't updated the website as you well know. And one or more of them may well be the EAR. When I update the website, ALL of the composites will be posted with my OPINION about each of them. Because the deficiencies in the investigation, we cannot say with any certitude that any of the composites are or are not the EAR.

The only composite that is actually of the perpetrator is the first Visalia Ransacker composite. If the Ransacker is also the EAR/ONS (which we cannot say with any certitude) than he looked like a fatboy in Dec. of 1975.

That, unfortunately, is as good as it gets. As mentioned, all of the other opportunities to get an accurate composite of the EAR were inexplicalby missed.

There are many more composite sketches of "suspicious persons" seen prowling in areas frequented by the EAR. Some I do not have enough background information on and others have not been ok'd for release. Those that have been ok'd for release will be posted on the updated website.

The EAR attacked his 40th victim 33 years ago today. It was his only attack in San Ramon even though he was trolling around SR in search of additional victims. He was seen by a witness on Nov. 1, 1978 in her backyard during the day without a ski mask. Probably the best sighting of the EAR and as usual, LE did not capitalize on this incident and have a sketch artist create a composite.

Part of the problem is that they were in denial that the EAR had struck in their jurisdiction. Then when it was confirmed that he was, in fact, in San Ramon, Capt. Rupf still failed to obtain a composite. Here is a quote from a newspaper article about the incident:

"I'll never know why they didn't get a composite from Mrs. Appel," said an Eastbay police officer who lives on Northland Ave. "You'd think they'd be hot to get the guy."

That says it all. As the EAR had done in Sacramento, once he was made by a witness, he left the area. Unlike Concord, Danville and Walnut Creek, the EAR did not return to San Ramon. This may be an indication why he did not return to Ventura.

To me, the story the lady told to the paper sounds exactly like him. Now we don't know if its true or not, but a lot of the things she said ring true- he wasn't nervous, he was in good shape, the height and weight, sandy colored hair, disguising the voice, casually and confidently creeping around. How many fences do you think he had jumped in his career at this point, 10,000?!! Scanning out a new yard is like a walk in the park for him at that point, mask or no mask. And I think he would look a bit more suspicious during the day wearing a mask no? If someone spots him he can just say "oh hey just walking through..."

Also it is interesting that the lady was told by cops that the guy she saw was just a kid in the neighborhood and they were satisfied with that for some reason. Then she states that she saw the kid at a later date and concluded that it wasn't him?!! If her account is true then WTF honestly...

The behavior of LE in this case is typical of the jurisdictions that did not want to admit a serial rapist was or even could be working in their suburban paradise. It eventually cost ten people their lives.

33 years ago today, the EAR/ONS attacked his 41st victim. This is the first time that he was known to have attacked in San Jose. This attacked occurred after he was presumably seen in the backyard of Mrs. Appel. Despite what the CCT newspaper article says about the tripwire and the footprints, Mr. Tank Top and the EAR were never seen again in San Ramon after the Nov. 1st sighting. And no one is disputing that there were no more EAR attacks in San Ramon after the 11/1/78 sighting. This strongly suggests to me that it was the EAR who was sighted and he knew he was sighted. If he was arrested in San Ramon (or Sacramento) there was now a witness who could positively identify him.

Note had he had no problem hitting a 2nd time in San Jose approximately one month later. Something significant happened in San Ramon, IMO. The only event that we know of was the 11/1/78 sighting. The Sacramento levee sighting caused a change in the EAR's behavior (or the Maggiore sighting for those who believe that) and the Daville encounter caused a major shift in the EAR's behavior. We know the Goleta 1 debacle caused a deadly shift in his behavior. The blood spatter in Ventura caused another shift and supposedly the publishing of the diamond knot info caused another shift (still unconfirmed). Something happened in 1981 during or after his attack on Sanchez and Domingo. I have a feeling that Sanchez getting back up made him cr*p his pants.

Don't know what caused the EAR to stop after 1986...

... there probably is something that happened in the Domingo\Sanchez attack- things probably did not all go according to his plan , another thing is the ambiguity of whether Cheri was raped, as far as has been revealed semen was on the bedding and I have not seen anything to confirm he raped Cheri hence I suspect something happened which precluded the sexual assault , could it be that Greg tried to intervene before EAR carried out the sexual assault?

Only once did the EAR injure himself. That is why they believe they have his blood type. It happened when he attacked Victim #13. She managed to get his gun from him and it is believed that he cut himself while wrestling the gun back.

The EAR claimed his 7th and 8th victim 35 years ago today. The 7th victim was attacked around 2:30am. The 8th victim was attacked around 11:00pm. The EAR attacking two victims with a 24 hour period was the last straw. The rumors about the attacks created a problem for the SCSD which wanted to keep these rapes from being publicized. The rumors took on a life of their own and by November, the SCSD were forced to admit there was a serial predator stalking Sacramento's east area. Ironically, the case could have been over before it ever hit the newspapers had the Oldsmobile information been followed up on.

A certain sadness
Arch, it seems like every day when I open up the forum, another attack anniversary is staring me in the face which leads to a certain sadness untempered by the years. I don't mean to carp on it, but the multitude of incidences leads me to believe this guy came from a broken home; either he lived alone, or with a single mother with her own problems, or a aged grandmother or aunt. I cannot see how anyone coming from an upper middle class home, which implies a certain stability, could be out at this much at night committing these crimes without some form of intervention by the parent or parents.
Maybe his mother, if he lived with her, was an 11pm to 7am nightshift nurse.

I just want to remind everyone that where there is a will there is a way. The arrest of Canada's Kinky Colonel says it all. He was able to command an air base of 7,000, was pilot for the Queen of England, volunteered in community acitivities, had a seemingly happy marriage - yet was still able to peep, stalk, rape and murder. His wife was unaware that he kept a collection of several hundred undies catalogued in the garage of their vacation cabin. I don't think EAR was married until possibly 1981, but he probably had friends and may have even dated. I do not believe he was a teen living at home.

Living in the '70s
I was 26 in 1975. I have the capabilities of remembering those years well because I was one of the minority who didn't get into the drug scene, though I had lots of friends who did, some losing their lives as a result. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that youthful offenders had their names put in the paper back then. I remember Cody W. (Visalia PD) telling me stories about how one of my first POI's parents lied and covered for him. Even when my POI was arrested and convicted for murder, the mother maintained that he was home studying the Bible with her, at the time of the murder...and that is no joke.

"X" Marks the Spot

Looking over the little map that is included with the newspaper article, an "x" marks the approximate location of one of the EAR attacks later removed from the list. It is in Rancho Cordova further to the North East. I think by looking over all of the previous EAR attack maps, we might be able to find the approximate location of the other EAR attack later removed from the list.

If anyone thinks they see it, let me know and I will attempt to verify it. One of those attacks should not have been removed from the list according to one of the retired investigators. I think the other attack took place on Paseo Drive but the date is unknown. It was a failed attempt but I have no details other than that.

Port, you are correct about those two attacks that were removed from the list. They were committed by two EAR "copycats". These copycat attacks occurred toward the end of the EAR's Sacramento crimes. Both in 1978, I believe.

There were at least two attacks that were included on the original list early in the EAR's Sacramento series. Here is a SacBee Map from 3/18/77. Notice how many "X's" there are in Rancho Cordova:

We know that the official tally is 5 attacks in Rancho Cordova, not 7. The Oct. 1975 attack is shown in the Rossmoor area of Rancho Cordova. The other attack took place on Paseo Drive. The Oct. 1975 probably should have been removed based on everything we know about the EAR. The other attack, I have been told, should not have been removed. Would be nice to know more about that attack.

There is another attack from 1975 that I know little about. It was later removed from the list. If that other 1975 attack was committed by the EAR, that is another indication he was not the VR. I believe that it occurred in March of 1975.

As It Relates to the Maggiore Murders

It is important to note that the murder of the Maggiores would occur 5 days after the brazen attack on the two sisters. With those shocking attacks fresh on everyone's mind, none of us ever suspected the EAR in the murders of the Maggiores back in 1978.

The EAR's name came up twice during the investigation when witnesses were asked who they thought may have committed the murders. A lot of the investigators who worked the Maggiore case also worked the EAR case. One would have thought that the EAR would have been suspected immediately. But the first witness saw two suspects walking together. She also did not see Katie Maggiore and the dog. Another witness saw Brian, Katie and Thumper walking along West La Loma Drive within the same time frame that the first witness saw the two suspicious males walking down La Gloria Way.

The EAR only became a serious suspect in the Maggiore murders decades after the fact. Now that the memories of the witnesses have dimmed and the case has remained unsolved. It is important to provide the context of the times. Even more important, the newspaper article about the 1/28/78 attack was published on 1/30/78, 3 days before the Maggiore murders.

And with that, the EAR was not the obvious suspect in the murders in 1978.

(Also note that none of the articles on the Maggiores mention the EAR as a possible suspect unlike the VR articles and the articles on Offerman/Manning).

Arch I am not trying to argue, and I know you want to know the truth about this case. With that in mind how come you never mention Guessting's contention that the Maggiore witnesses' testimony morphed after being re interviewed several times and hypnotized. I really don't get how you can believe that these witnesses statements were not corrupted when Guessting's source has clearly stated that they were. Of course everytime I ask about this you begin a fresh round of personal attacks. Which to me is an indication that deep down you know I have a point. So....bring on the attacks and insults. All I care about is the truth.

Witness Statements

Guestting is referring to only one witness. The first witness. She was 10 or 11 years old, I believe. Highly suggestible even without hypnosis. It was her account the changed over the course of two interviews and a hypnosis session.

So, you back up and look at her initial statement and go by that. What was consistent in all of her statements is that she saw two men walking together down La Gloria Way. That never changed. She said that when she last saw them they were near the corner of La Gloria Way and West La Loma Drive. At no time did she mentioned seeing a woman and a dog.

To my knowledge, no one is disputing that the first witness saw two men walking together down La Gloria Way toward West La Loma Drive.

Only 3 Witnesses

Only 3 of the witnesses were hypnotized. The first witness. The 17 year old who imagined a ski mask. And the witness who saw Mr. Orange Dragon Jacket. The witness who saw the suspect in the green jacket with the gun in the back pocket (or waist band) was not hypnotized. There were probably more than 30 witnesses altogether.

Back to the first witness. She was the only witness to see two men together before the shooting. None of her descriptions (either before or after hypnosis) were consistent with what Sgt. Maggiore was wearing that evening. The lead detective believes that Sgt. Maggiore was one of the two men seen by the first witness.

If Sgt. Maggiore was not one of the two men, then there were two people stalking the Maggiores as Lt. Biondi concluded back in 1978. The first witness would have to be wrong on every point of her description in order for one of those men to have been Sgt. Maggiore. If she was right on even a single point, the 2nd person could not have been Sgt. Maggiore.

If this turns out to be an EAR attack that should not have been removed from the official list, then that lessens the likelihood that the VR and the EAR are one and the same.

Arch- There was only one ransacking on March 1, 1975 and none in April 1975. How would that eliminate someone from being in Sacramento? I think you are forgetting that there are many professions that are highly mobile- EAR ONS or VR could have been staying in motels with a permanent address in Southern California. The VR and EAR really favored weekends with only an occasional Wed/Thursday thrown in every now and then.

My point being
The most difficult crimes to solve are stranger crimes where there is no connection between victim and perp. And this was the problem for law enforcement in the EAR crimes. This creep knew how the cops work. And their methods of working in circles outward from the vics through their family, friends, neighbors and contacts in the community didn't work because EAR wasn't any of those. But he knew exactly how the cops would try to ID him. And when LE flooded the zone in Sacramento and Stockton he just outran them and escaped. Which is why the policewoman told my wife what she told her.

I might be misremembering but, Col Russ Williams picked out victims and broke in when they werent there and took or tried on their clothes, then he attacked later. So that would have been his m.o.
VR's m.o. was to break in and ransack the home. Ears m.o. was to break in and check out pictures of the women living there and look for guns, then attack later. If VR stopped sacking homes, ok. If VR was Ears and Ears decided he wanted no link to VRs crimes (& murder), then he would not ransack. Or maybe he couldnt stop himself from that compulsion, so he ransacked in a more conrolled way (during the attacks).

Anyway I digress. If Russ Williams (hes not a Col no more) and Ears broke into a home first, it was usually for a reason. The main reason: the attack they planned later. Ears didnt get the chance to follow up on everyone he wanted to attack after breaking into their homes, maybe that was the same for Wms.

With all of those witnesses, where did they track the "two" men in their escape? Where did they go? Two men to assassinate someone/s on foot in the street in a nice neighborhood doesnt sound very smart. Because of witnesses. If there were two, youd expect one to be the getaway driver. So if there were two, maybe there were actually three.

Anyway, I hear rumors of diamond-knot tied shoelaces were found near there, but I never see an actual confirmation that, Yes, its true.
Also, Ears didnt use diamond knots in his rapes and his murders were a year off. So, it sounds like an urban myth.

Stockton has a high murder rate. Most murderers arent caught in high crime areas like that. I saw a depressing stat from another high crime city and the rate was something like 1 in 3.

If we want to forego conventional thinking on this case, Russell Williams is not the poster boy for that. Except for the fact that he was a late bloomer, his crime series follows a rather predictable trajectory. His "continuum of violence" is not unlike the EAR's (minus the VR and the Maggiore murders). He started off as a voyeur and sex burglar. He escalated to sexual assault and finally to murder. What he didn't do is murder someone, then rape someone and then steal their panties.

Here is an excerpt from an article on William's:

Profilers have it right; sexual criminals escalate, and they start with peeping and burglaries. Colonel Russell Williams is a textbook case. As of Thursday, April 29, police have now tacked on additional burglary charges to the professing rapist and murderer, bringing the total to 84 burglaries! And the burglaries, supposedly, preceeded his murders in November 2009 and January 2010.

The Ottawa break-and-enter charges are centred around the Fallingbrook neighbourhood, where Williams once lived. A man whose house was among those burglarized said he and his wife came home one day to find family pictures on their bed and underwear drawers open.

“It was pretty upsetting,” said the man, who didn’t want to be identified.

The couple has four children, including 11- and 18-year-old girls. Photos of the girls were taken and the person who broke in rifled through his wife’s panty drawer and his two girls’ panty drawers, he said.

Unlike the VR, Williams showed no murderous intent until the end of his crime series. And that is what I maintain about the EAR. The EAR didn't show any murderous intent until the end of his crime series. The VR showed murderous intent BEFORE he committed a rape. That is primarily why I do not believe the VR is the EAR/ONS.

There were at least 3. Mr. Dragon Jacket was numeral 3. I believe that the plan was to murder the Maggiores at the corner of West La Loma Drive and Capitales. That would have been their normal route of travel. There was a suspicious male loitering at that corner. There was an empty field to the west. Unfortunately, there were witnesses jogging by at the time. The Maggiores changed the direction of their normal route of travel (when they returned to that corner) and headed north down W. La Loma instead of south. That is where Dumb (clean shaven) and Dumber (mustache) were headed -- west on La Gloria toward W. La Loma.

As the Maggiores rounded the corner and traveled east on La Gloria, Dumb and Dumber followed them. A confrontation occured at some point, guns were produced and we know the rest. Dumb was originally headed west on La Alegria to link up with Mr. Orange Dragon. But he ran into the 17 year old. He changed direction. Dumb was then headed toward the open garage of airmen when another witness stepped out of her duplex.

Dumb changed directions again and headed up Malaga Way and kept on running. Dumber was seen running west down Capitales and into someone's backyard. He hopped their fence and ran into the apartment complex and disappeared.

A retired Sacramento detective, when interviewed for ETHS investigates, acknowledged that the Diamond Knot or Chinese Decorative Knot or Knife lanyard was used in almost all the EAR cases which they attributed to "nautical experience." His words, not mine.
Arch- Even after the Kinky Colonel murdered, he was still creeping in his Tweed neighborhood where he lived during the week without the wife. When he returned home to her on weekends in Toronto, same thing. The activity in the neighborhoods the night of the Offerman Manning murders and the Smith murders are gauges of how little control EAR really did have with his obsessive home invasions.

34 years ago today, the EAR attacked his 29th and 30th victims. This is one of his more brazen and impulsive attacks. He kicked in the front door of the residence to gain entry. This was discussed in a previous post. The EAR's last successful attack occurrred on Nov. 10, 1977. There was the aborted attack on 12/2/77 and the Watt Ave. chase on 12/12/77.

The fact that the EAR abandoned his usual careful and calculating M.O. of sneaking into his victim's homes while they slept shows that his frustration had built up to the point where he lost control. He switched from an organized offender to a desperate, disorganized one. Unfortuately, he was still able to commit his crime and get away.

Of note, the Maggiores would be murdered only five days later.

Now knowing this it shows that there is no reason why this guy would stop killing and raping after Janelle's killing. In my opinion he would only stop unless 1. On another thread (What Can We Extrapolate about EAR from The Case of Richard Ramirez), Lawstudent1 and Warren mention that in a book "What Cops Know" a rapist in Chicago used the dish tricks on a husband while he raped the wife. I would love to know more about that case, if he was a serial rapist, did he murder, was he caught?

It could be a possibility that this guy is the rapist in Chicago. But I think he would have killed again not just rape. He most likely believed in his mind that he killed before so he can get only one execution. So there was no stoping this bum from murdering again.

What do people think of Det. Crompton's theory that EAR needed a justification to kill his victims? Whilst having respect for Det. Crompton’s views formed at the coalface, I have doubts. Where was, for example, the justification to kill Janelle Cruz? It’s highly unlikely a single female could have escaped.

For some time, I’d always assumed the ONS phase was nothing more than his graduation from rape to murder as he finally released his pent-up anger. But I had doubts: I could not explain the change of city, the removal of some of the bindings or the lack of dishes. Personally, I find myself warming more and more to Arch's recent suggestion that someone discovered who he was near the end of the EAR phase. Burdened by guilt, he may have even confessed to a family member and an agreement was made to stop or else they would report him to police.

Arch’s theory provides, in my view, a very simple explanation as to why the modus operandi had to be modified, and also why the victims had to be killed. If the victims were left alive, they could have given a sufficient description — the five feet nine or ten, the hissing, the routine lie about food and money — that may have resulted in further ‘EAR’ media headlines and the other party going to police. This theory makes more sense to me.

Hello aus_sherlock, Now that you mention it, what you say could make sense.

I had always thought that EAR/ONS simply felt free to kill once he was far from home, far from relatives or people that would know him.

Listening to the pod cast interview of Larry Crompton, his theory is that since the couple in Danville escaped and then H/H in Goleta escaped, EAR/ONS decided that was the justification he needed to start killing, something he actually always wanted to do from the beginning.

Regarding Arch's theory that that someone threatened to turn EAR in (I'm wondering if it could have been a mother, father, brother?) and so now that he moved to So. Cal EAR/ONS had to be careful this person did not hear of his continuing crimes so he started killing people so they could not identify him by description, voice, things he said and did that could make sense too.

However, I think Larry Crompton's theory holds the most water.

If we embrace Det. Crompton's 'justification' theory we are still left with some unanswered questions. Why do you suppose the ONS removed some of the bindings? Why didn't use the dishes trick which had worked so effectively for him in the past? Alternatively, if you embrace Arch's theory, you have answers to both of these questions. If he had succeeded in tying up Janelle and raping her, what then was the point of then killing her? His control of the situation was in no way threatened.

During the EAR phase, he loved the media coverage. He wanted as much publicity as he could get. A movie about his life.But during the ONS phase, there were no further taunts to LE, no more poems, no more 'Afraid' letters, no more "I'm the EAR and you can't catch me" phone calls to the police.

Does it not strike you as odd?

Well, I could accept any of those three theories above.

Det. Crompton said in his pod cast that EAR/ONS started removing ties from the victim because since the victims were dead, he didn't need to leave them tied up to allow him time to escape.

I don't have any idea why he didn't use the dish trick. In the case of H/H, it appears from the lack of mention of it in ST that he didn't.

I have the theory that Dr. Offerman got loose immediately and lunged at EAR/ONS and that is why Ms. Manning wasn't removed to another room and why he had to resort to shooting them. If it is a fact (and I'm not clear if it is) that Ms. Manning was not raped, that would explain that also.

Det. Crompton said that he learned from O/M to not use a gun because of the noise so he started to bludgeon. In the case of Sanchez/Domingo, when Sanchez lunged at him, again he shot and it did not kill Sanchez so then the monster bludgeoned them.

The not wanting it publicized when he became ONS would fit with Arch's theory. Or could it be that now that he would be facing the death penalty and he is now actually a serial killer, he no longer wanted the publicity?

Regarding Janelle, and all of his murder victims, Det. Crompton said he had always wanted to kill but needed justification, maybe after he actually took the step to be a killer, he no longer felt he needed justification.

The whole thing strikes me as odd. He was odd. It's kind of hard to figure out pure evil or pure crazy.

I think the reason he didn't use the dishes trick down south is that he was changing his MO. So he couldn't be linked to his other crimes. However if he went in planning to kill there is no reason he couldn't have used dishes and then put them away after he executed his victims.
I didn't know that Greg Sanchez attacked the EAR I suspected as much but its nice to have confirmation. I wonder If EAR kept telling his victims they were about to die like in goleta1 "I'm gonna kill em, I'm gonna kill em" maybe that's the reason people started fighting back so much down south.

Just wanted to run something by you all. This maybe far fetched but here it goes. We know that Glasby spent time in Sacramento, we also know that he was involved in the drug trade. Is it possible that Glasby was the second suspect seen at the Maggiore murders? Is it possible that he was involved with ear? I guess I was thinking this because I have a problem with ear committing the Goleta crimes. I know that some LE believe Glasby was good for Goleta. Is it possible that Glasby got to know ear, and tried to copy him? I don't want to go all in depth on here regarding this, but just wanted to get some opinions and ideas.

Just a little clarification here on the Glasby family's addresses in Goleta.

Both JJMCGR's map and Goletagirl are correct. From the early 1970s, and possibly before, until 10/14/76, the Glasbys lived at 5590 Pembroke Ave, in Goleta. Then they moved to 1409 Camino Rio Verde, which is the area reflected in JJMCGR's map. This is also where they were living during the timeframe of EAR's presence in Santa Barbara.

Gaviota is north of Santa Barbara along the coast. There is nothing there. There used to be a restaurant that has been closed, I don't ever remember it being open. Gaviota is probably about 10 to 15 minutes north Winchester Canyon offramp in Goleta. I think it is a good surfing spot? Jack WayneGlasby, the dad, died in Grants Pass, Oregon 2/25/10. Audrey Kirby Glasby died in 2001.

Quick question--the truecrimediary site said that EAR's large calves could have come from roofing work...is it possible that Glasby met EAR when he did roof work in Sacramento? Regarding Glasby since he died in 1982 and EAR struck in 1986 , there is no need to clear him via DNA...........
As for the bodies discovery I think a newspaper report from the time said someone stumbled upon the scene after they had been shot...........Im not 100% sure but off the back of my head I think it was some tourist or something and curiously enough a local man standing at a distance was reported to have witnessed the murders occur..................

Regarding Glasby meeting EAR , I guess its possible, look at it this way no one knows for sure if the two individuals met apart for EAR himself and Glasby....thre are interesting tid bits of info supportiing the possibility of EAR being aware of Glasby................I guess the day we know the answer to your question will be the day EAR has been identified and apprehended but it is interesting both criminals were in similar locations twice- a few years apart and both had contact with the same dog ...........it really is food for thought ...........add to that both had some form of contact with the same doctor, and things really start to look interesting !

History of this Board?

I am a student of the case, having spent several months reporting on it in 2002. When I check postings on the message boards, I see my own story sliced and diced in ways I never imagined.

I wonder what she is referring to?

Rarely a month goes by without message-board detectives contacting me via e-mail to share a theory. Often, after an orgy of Googling, they detail how a homicide elsewhere mimics the Smith killings.

When a poster links the Zebra Killer and Unabomber to the Smith homicides, it does set off my easily triggered conspiracy-theory alarm.

Murray said he is open to any idea these DIY detectives might hatch that could break the case — as long as they have some compelling evidence.

“I think any tip is valuable,” he said, “I’d much rather get a tip than have someone withhold one that could be important.”

I hope the identity of the Smiths’ killer does not remain one of the enduring mysteries of Ventura County. I’d like to see it solved for the sake of everyone who loved Lyman and Charlene.

Beyond that, it gives hope to other families who have lost loved ones to a violent death without seeing the killer brought to justice.

And who are we to say these message-board sleuths don’t have the first clue?

Rather than deal with the substance of my information, which she apparently never even bothered to read, she decided instead to portray me as a nutcase conspiracy theorist. Odd, as my evidence shows one man and one man only as the killer, and a conspiracy is two or more people joining together to do a crime. She made another huge mistake in writing that I said the "Zebra Killer" was involved. Get your facts straight. The Zebra killings in San Francisco were done by Black Muslim extremists and of course have nothing to do with the ONS. The ZODIAC Killer - like the ONS - wore a hood, targeted couples, bound them and then killed them. Is it crazy to think they could be one and the same. Police have long questioned if there could be a link, and a link is now the subject of renewed investigation.

The Ventura Detective quoted, Sgt Rick Murray, has in fact welcomed my information and is looking at it.

People used to ridicule the idea that the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker could be one and the same. Yet some top detectives and forensics people decided to actually investigate before deciding, and they produced the DNA breakthrough that proved these killers were the same. Guess what, some of those top detectives and forensics people who discovered the link bewteen the EAR and the ONS are now investigating the possible link I propose, that the Zodiac Killer could have become the EAR/ONS, and that Kaczynski is a serious suspect to have been both. Their investigation has uncovered that Kaczynski has never had DNA drawn, and they are seeking it. They are doing other things I can't discuss publicly as well.

I wrote to her because she did one of the most interesting and complete stories on the case. She is - or was - a good writer and investigative journalist. I can only hope she actually reads the information I sent her. I was a military policeman in the Army Reserve and have practiced criminal law as an attorney for over 10 years. Evidence - including physical evidence and witnesses - is now being found to support my theory.

I also thought that as part of this series of crimes the Zodiac Killer and/or Ted Kaczynski may have murdered college student Betsy Aardsma at the Penn State library. Based on information I provided, the police there showed a witness a photo line up, and that witness picked out a picture of TED KACZYNSKI as being present at the scene of the murder, the Penn State library, the day before it happened, acting strangely and perhaps wearing a wig. There is also an item of physical evidence linking the Aardsma scene to a Zodiac crime in California.

Thankfully the Ventura detectives are open minded enough, and experienced enough, to want to investigate solid tips, even if they seem odd at first glance.

Like so many investigators and tipsters before me on this case, in the end I may be proven wrong. Time will tell, but right now supporting evidence is being developed to show that I may well be right.

I'll have to get back to you about the non-secretor average life span figure, which might be in JAMA or some other specialized medical journal. It's a very good question. I imagine it's at least 65 or younger. The description above makes it sound like any non-secretor out there is an automatic gonner. It made me think of the Visalia Ransacker sliming down and becoming the Ear. If he is alive he may be obese, due to diabetes or his inabilty to break down carbs.

That article may overstate things, because 15 to 20% of the population are non-secretors. When they say "increased risk", who knows what that means? A regular person has a 10% of heart disease, and a non-secretor 12%?

If EAR died a free man and of natural causes, no autopsy, then we may never know who he was. They would have to get a court order to dig up a grave, and I don't see them doing that unless the evidence is amazing.

There is only one thing that cannot be disputed in this case whether we all agree or disagree with eachother. That little fact is that not one person has been right in this case yet about their poi. Basically anything should be up for grabs. We could all be shocked to find out who EARONS is. So until then I guess I will try to stay open minded..Even when I don't think it is possible.

I'd like to hear from someone's first hand experiance if they have this blood type.

I am a non secretor. So is my mother and so was my Grandfather. He died age 99, and had never taken medicine(it bothered him). We do all react very strongly to meds, perfumes, paint, etc. It's not that we are a death trap, it's just best for us to avoid as many man made toxins, chemicals, and pollution as possible. When we live very naturally, we are in fact, extremely healthy people. Just as we respond quickly to toxins, we also respond very quickly to good diets, foods, etc. It is not true that Non Secretors dies around age 65. That's a ridiculous statement. We learned about all of this because a Dr Perls had my Grandfather in a longevity study. Grandad was driving, gardening, active up until the week of his death(in bed--at home). I am 45 and and in perfect health. My mother is 70 and going strong. If you read further, you will discover that non secretors are immune to many viruses, have a heightened resistance to HIV, and age much better than secretors.

Today ResDpty posted pictures of various belt buckles with crossing guns on them. I got to thinking. What type of person would be likely to wear these buckles? While, of course, anyone who likes them can wear them, what I think of is a person who lives on a ranch or possibly in a house in horse country on the outskirts of town where people own some acerage with their homes and many people keep horses.

Then I remembered reading in the articles g. posted here from the Ventura Star about the Smith Murders in Ventura. It was mentioned that Lyman Smith grew up in Citrus Heights in an almond orchard. In 1945, 9 year old Lyman and his 1 year old brother moved with their parents to Citrus Heights outside Sacramento. Lyman worked in a grocery store when he was younger and eventually attended UC Berkely and then Boalt Hall School of Law at Berkely on a scholarship. He moved to Ventura in 1961.

This made me wonder if it was remotely possible the Smith murders weren't random after all. Could he have crossed paths with EAR/ONS while living in Citrus Heights on his ranch? Pretty slim connection but I thought I'd bring it up none the less.

Sacramento Ties and Vehicle Pass Keys

I recently read the Ventura Star article mentioned at the beginning of this post (http://www.vcstar.com/news/2002/nov/03/chapter-1-between-the-sea-and-the-stars/) and had thought to myself that it was possible that EAR-ONS knew (or at least was acquainted with) Lyman Smith when he lived in the Sacramento area. If this is the case, this would narrow down EAR-ONS age somewhat since Lyman moved to Ventura County in 1961; maybe not, though, if Lyman had family in the area who he returned to visit after moving. I remember reading in another post that Patrice (nee Briscoe) Harrington had also lived in Northern California prior to moving to Dana Point. Does anyone know if any of the other Southern California murder victims have Northern California (especially Sacramento) ties? Maybe this guy isn’t as random as I initially thought.


In Philip Carlo’s book, The Night Stalker, he stated that Richard Ramirez stole several Toyota vehicles with a pass key. Oldsmobile and Pontiac are both GM cars. I wonder if EAR-ONS had a GM pass key of some sort to make stealing vehicles easier (IMO, I think he was using stolen vehicles (cars and bicycles) that couldn’t be traced back to him when he committed his crimes).

I think your idea of a pass key is a first. It's seems like a very reasonable idea, especially when you are linking the cars to a maker such as GM. It's my understanding that VWs were easy to hot wire, and I watched my husband hotwire ours once, so you may be quite correct in thinking that the cars were stolen. There were just such a variety of vehicles. I've always thought that the guy may have had a couple of disguises as well -- glasses, fake beard, even possibly wig.

Hot Wiring VW Bugs
Growing up on the North Shore of Long Island in 1974, we would go prowling for unattended bugs cause all you needed was a screw driver to short across the starter which was under the front hood. The old bugs' hoods didn't have a lock either. We would joy ride all night long until we ran out of gas and abandon it where it was. I've often wondered about earons and his vehicles, -most likely stolen vehicles.

The starter is not under the front hood on a VW bug. It is under the car in the rear mounted to the transmission. VW's are very easy to hotwire.

I hope someone steals your drums and loads them up in your car and then joy rides all night long. Anyone that steals a car should get five years in prison. If someone breaks into a home then they should get ten years, and if they rape or kill they should be killed. People like you make me sick.

Did EAR steal some of the vehicles associated with him? It's an interesting proposition. EAR was inclined to take people's bicycles, and as others have shown it was very easy to steal the "rides" of that era. However, when you consider that EAR usually parked the vehicles that he DID drive far away from the homes of the victims, using a bicycle to commute to and from the household, I think it's clear that he probably owned most of the vehicles he drove. It wouldn't be necessary to go all that far out if the vehicles weren't traceable to his name. EAR did steal a car from his victims on one occasion, a white Chevrolet if I'm not mistaken. He drove it to an apartment complex and left it there.

If EAR/ONS stole bicycles, it seems he could have stolen cars too, except for one thing. If I'm not mistaken, wouldn't the police know that? People would report their car as stolen and I would imagine police would put 2 and 2 together, but then again maybe not. Ambercat came up with a very interesting possibility as to how he had access to so many different vehicles.

You know me; I'll always go back a parallel VR. VR rode TO SNELLING home on a stolen bicycle. The bicycle had been stolen about a 1 1/2 away and was found in the yard next to Snelling's. Question remains with this: What was the VR's intention with the young girl? Was he going to put her on the handle bars and peddle away, or was he planning to molest her on their patio? A couple of witnesses said that they heard a car speeding away, around 2:30 AM, from the neighborhood. Those who looked out their window in the immediate vicinity of Snellings, however, did not see a car.

To: Sandia and Dan Cartell - Dan he out-ran two officers and they "really" wanted him. They got caught up by a large dog next door to me when he came back into my house. The same night that he came to my house, the VPD told me more than once, that he had raped a woman in my neighborhood earlier that night. the reason that they arrived at my house so fast is because they were already looking for him and the small bicycle that he had stolen - after the 1st rape that night - but before he came to my house - was on my front walk. He left it there.
Sandia: We came back to the U.S. in 1971, rented a house where we had a dial phone and then owned our own house by July 1972, where we had a push button phone. My mom has arthritic fingers and she obtained a push button phone in 1973 . Steaming the envelope open and resealing it undetected is how I caught my ex-hubby cheating in 1982 - so it can be done but is time consuming. I woke up in the middle of last night remembering that my address book was stolen in either 1982 or 83. I think stealing address books is an easy way to find friends, family & unlisted numbers. I can't find our previous posts so if I missed any questions please re-ask. Must get back to work.

Q1 -- No. It was an older couple. The guy heard noises, got up and entered the hallway where he saw the guy (but light was off).
Q2 Said the guy had long legs -- which doesn't really sound to me like VR. Man went back into his bedroom, got flashlight and gun, searching house. Front door was open. This all happened right before Snelling was murdered...RIGHT BEFORE. So, it may, or may not have been, the guy who murdered Snelling. We need to remember that VR entered Snelling's home, taking out Mrs. Snelling's purse and putting it in a flower bed on the patio, then he re-entered. So, how could he do the purse thing and be in the neighbor's house? Prior to Snelling's VR had been to the McGowen flashlight incident home more than once...which makes it sound like he was stalking the gal who lived there. So...#1 July stalking gal; #2 Snelling attempted abduction; #3 back to #1 location -- which also ended badly for VR. He must have been extremely frustrated.

He traveled to the neighborhood via bicycle (likely), but left in a car (thus an accomplice). Otherwise, wouldn't it make sense for him to retrieve the bike and ride away on the bike?
Not neccesarily. He never intended on being confronted by Snelling, which made it too dangerous to return to that previous home and retrieve the bike, thus it's my belief he fled on foot. One of the more compelling aspects on the VR end is the time frame between the first break in and the attempted abduction of Beth. It's almost hard to believe it's one guy...but it's certainly possible given the proximity between the two homes.

Phone numbers were listed right on the phone up until the early 80's. EAR coul have easily taken the number right off the phone. He could of taken neighbors numbers out of personal phone books. But..remember EAR entered many homes he never attacked in. He called as many as ten surrounding neighbors of his victims. It was very easy to get numbers back in those days! G

Very true. As I read over old notes I found - a few pages were not about being stalked - they were about just the frustrations of each day. Things like my front and back door being jammed with a broken-off key, or the rag found in the roof vent to my kitchen sink, all the light bulbs being in place - but unscrewed, my red-gel toothpaste being smeared onto the bathroom mirror, whiskey poured onto the carpet, 90 hangup calls in 1 day. My girls were/are really good kids - I used to think one of my daughters had a "bad apple" friend - so I tried to never leave them alone in the house. I didn't know about the VR or anyone else back then, just that I had been harassed and followed by a guy for a long time. After my 1985 breakin - it all stopped. Most surprising -while my memory has always been pretty good, there are dozens of things that I had forgotten or never considered to be from the idoit stalker. Now it seems to be coming into focus.

This simple answer it the reason why this case will never be solved, not one dim bulb thought this answer deserved a 1 second google search because you know it all already, however developing bigger calves appears to be a common complaint of people riding horses. Think outside of a box? Hell, you can't identify the box you're living in.

Brilliant stuff, that is interesting info .... the guy certainly had a stalker fixation on those girls, this got me thinking : considering that stalkers continue their tendencies into old age, it is possible that this offender may still anonymously stalk some women and girls even as he gets older, less riskier than burglary but still good enough to re-live his good old days.....

Regarding the older couple approximately how old were they and was there any activity around their house before or after that incident?

Polk directories were available in the '70's. I have used the '73-'76 numerous times, but not all addresses have the needed information, say if the person was just renting the house.

You know I can't tell you what this character did in his youth to get big calves. It could have been a combination of biking, hiking, running, swimming or just genetics. I did all those things growing up. I was on the McClellan AFB swim team. I lived on my BMX. I loved going into the mountains and go hiking and free climbing. I ran only when I had to I just couldn't stand running. My calves are no larger than anyone elses. What I'm trying to say is this guy was a "Runner". He didn't jog he was always running or sprinting. He used to carry a small piece of broomstick with him. It was about the same size a Relay racers bataan. He did not start slowing a bit till around late 1977 I believe. Thats when he started running with a light colored dog. And lets just say it wasn't a German Shepard either.

No I haven't I'm trying to atleast get a name first so I can see if this individual followed in the same areas of travel as the later victims all the way to the final ONS attacks. This is the problem I'm having is that the converted hote/motel apartments he lived in were torn down in I believe 1979. This complex was right next to the freeway. It was torn down to build a CHP sub station. I can't remember the name of the place. When I try and look up anything before the CHP station was built I run into a wall. I need to go downtown to search through archive records. One thing Sac. county did & does is keep accurate records of apartment & hotel/ motel occupants. I don't know why exvept maybe a large percentage of vriminals are associated with hotels & apartments, I don't know. I just don't want somebody to look at me like I'm nuts If I just try to explain about a person with allot of cercumstancle evidance that points to them without more tangibal evidance

I think you are right to get all your ducks in a row. I don't believe LE will look at your poi unless you can locate him in all the pertinent areas. Port-of-leith is a great person for getting information on where to research. Like using the City Directory available in libraries which will probably give you the information on what was in that location before the CHP station. After you have done all you possibly can do, I would turn the info in to LE. It can't hurt and for all you know this person might already be a poi and the information you furnish might enhance what they already have on him. I wouldn't waste any time, so many records have already been thrown out and witnesses may be dying off etc. Good luck.

222urit mentioned that she had harassment and a stalker off and on until 1985, and I think she said Russ Whitmeyer told her they were able to obtain a fingerprint from her dresser and match it to VR. I am just going by memory so I may be inaccurate. But is anyone aware of any other victims that complained of being stalked as late as 1985, or after? The last known admitted murder was Janelle, but were there other
women he was stalking after 1985 that the investigators have discovered? At least that they will discuss..
