How do you know all the other marines in her life were identified? Alot of people in Janelle' life have not all been identified and properly investigated.

I said she was dating a guy who was in the marines. The guy could have been kitten man too. As arch said the guy was a consumated liar. The marine nor kitten man have been idntified to this day.

I happen to not believe that kitten man holds any significance to this case. Det.Montgomery interviewed the poster who relayed the kitten man story. Montgomery has an impressive reputation as a detective. Janelle's case was waylaid by a false confession, but I am convinced that Heany, Pool and Montgomery have thoroughly investigated Janelle's circle of male acquaintances. I personally have looked at two other Marines within her circle and neither were viable suspects.. .mainly because of where they were stationed during other EAR ONS crimes. They mystery Marine at the beach may have been known to one of Janelle's friends. Most teenage girls discuss attractive guys they meet.

I personally doubt it is someone she knew well; however, EAR thought he knew her well. So "know" him, in past posts I said yes but I tend to lean to more association and the fact the EAR thought he knew her. From a criminal stand point: Jannelle was his to watch and nobody else.

We can make calculated assumptions about his behavior and future behavior based on past serial offenders. Could he be a statistical outlier? Maybe, but staying within the standard deviation will give us more definition into his character.

Too many people who saw her the last week of her life can attest to that.

Janelle, like many girls, had a lot of guy friends and she wasn't one to stick around if the guy she was dating proved to be a scumbag.

I am not referring to Marines that were in her life on a constant, or limited basis.

Regardless of how unlikely, it should be one of the leads looked into. I'm not saying with 100% certainty she dated ONS/EAR. I'm just saying it's one of many possibilities as is most if not all the theories are on this board. If we all knew for sure who he was, what he was, where he is etc. he would be caught. Are next best bet is to look into as many angles as possible. Kinda of like going down the check list and eliminating people, places, scenarios etc.

I just feel if he didn't want us to know what high school Sanchez went to he shouldn't have posted his high yearbook photos. Because in that case it would be then reasonable for some to say great pics which high school did he go to etc. Most of us are only here to help each other not cause harm.

There are 2 and maybe more Marines that lived in the vicinity of Janelle. There was also another Marine whos daughter was friends with Janelle. I would hope that these Marines and their friends have been cleared. I think it would be possible that the Marines who lived in the neighborhood had their fellow Marines over for parties and used the community pool.

Because it can never be proven 100% that the 1990-91 phone call was made by the EAR/ONS (until he is identified), I think way too much emphasis is being put on this particular subject. It's value is only in the fact that if true (and I have no reason to believe that it is not true), it establishes the last known communication made by the EAR/ONS and therefore provides a date as to when he was last known to be alive.

My assumption all along has been that he is alive and well. This is based not on the 1990-91 phone call but rather on the fact that 99% of ALL EAR suspects have been found to be alive and well (and not in prison). The phone call happened. That is a fact. Whether or not it was made by the EAR or by a prank caller will never be known (unless and until there is an arrest in the case). What is relevant is that the victim, herself, believed that the call came from the EAR. I have never been in the habit of questioning what the victims have said or believed (unless there is a strong basis on which to do so).

What is important for all of us to know is that law enforcement has been aware of this phone call since 1990-91. And so far, it has not led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. So, us knowing the particulars of this phone call would not likely produce any different result.

It is a curiosity in a case full of curiosities.

Fellow board poster 222urit mentioned having found an AT&T service manual in her backyard, which coincided with several break-ins. Upon follow up, the manual was discovered to have been stolen from a phone company field technician.

There is more regarding the phone company manual. There are also two houses next two POIs homes that have those big telephone boxes very near them. The two POIs came to me via two different people, one being 222urit. The two may be connected in more ways than one. Also, recently 222urit told me she had figured out what some "twine" (for lack of a better word in my vocabulary) was, twine that she found back when she had one of the major break-ins (police came out). She said she would come to site today.

I'm going to make a graphic map of the following details about the 2d (Offermann-Manning) Goleta attack where the killer shot Dr. Offermann after he freed himself from his bindings (he was found with his bindings unyied around his wrists) and the killer stole another bike and broke into the empty condo next to the crime location.

Of note: larger shoe size than reported for the EAR
no mention of the dog
only case where apartment-style condo was an attack site in all the EAR/GK/Linked Killer cases
killer fled to the north and abandoned a bike near the general vicinity of his activities the night of the first attack

Earlier the same night (about 9:45 p.m.) there was a break-in at another private residence

In the area of the front (south) yard of 769 [the vacant condo next to the Offermann condo which was 767] next to the fence (east) separating from Offerman's, was an area of flowers that had been trampled. Detectives found Adidas Runner shoe impressions. These were the same type, design and size as those found at Offerman's and the 1st Goleta crime scene. [ measured to be 11 7/16th]. On top of the fence, fibers or hairs of some kind were found. It appeared to detectives that the subject stayed in this area for a long period of time. It was noted that the subject could stand in this area and look over the fence and have an unobstructed view into the Offerman master bed room. There were shoe prints from this position leading to the front porch of 769 [next door condo].

Detectives found on the front door of 769 pry marks in the wood doorframe by the latch. A pry tool had been forced between the wood molding and the doorframe. There were fresh pry marks on the striker plate. The door bolt was inoperable. A front window that was closed, the draperies were left open and from the outside it could be seen the residence was empty. (there were mattresses and blankets inside the residence in the various bedrooms. Not all the drapes were closed, allowing observation of what was in the residence at the time of the murders) [ie, the killer knew the next door condo was vacant before he broke into it and from its front yard could observe the Offermann condo's bedroom]

Pry marks were found on the sliding glass doors. There were fresh pry marks on the backdoor screen, though the door was found locked and the screen closed. The south bedroom window screen had been removed and was located on top of an eight foot high hedge on the northwest side of the residence. One shoe print was found in front of this window.

Detectives believe the subject made entry eventually through a living room window. [obviously after trying to enter through a bunch of windows and doors]

Inside, detectives found pieces of twine that was the same type used to bind Offerman and Manning, 1/16th three strand nylon. These were found on the floor of the master bedroom and on the floor and under the sink within the master bathroom. [also similar to that from the 1st attack]

The Detectives did not find evidence to confirm whether the subject was in 769 before or after the murder.

A Schwinn varsity 10-speed bicycle was stolen from 773 Avenida Pequena. In the yard behind 773 detectives found two more pieces of the same type of twine used to bind Offerman and Manning. [773 was to the west and around the corner from the Offermann condo in the direction of San Jose Creek (i.e. west) The bike was later discovered several blocks away in the vicinity of 936 Crown Avenue. [this location was north of Cathedral Oaks Street and very near where the assailant in the 1st Goleta attack was last seen. It was also a few blocks from where he stole a bike before the 1st attack].

The shoe size is consistent with the EAR/ONS. You're confusing measurement in inches with it's conversion to shoe size. A shoe measuring 11 and 7/16th's inches converts to a Size 9 or 9 1/2 Addidas.

There is no "GK". Only EAR/ONS. DNA link made by Santa Barbara this year. Victim #24 was attacked in an apartment townhouse/condo. One of the Davis victims was attacked in an apartment.

The dog's footprints as well as his hair were found at the crime scene. Additionally, the dog was fed turkey scraps taken from Offerman's refrigerator.

Even though the condo was vacated by the previous owner, the new owner was in the process of moving into it. The condo was having some work done on it. (I'd be curious to know what type of work and who was doing the contracting). The new owner's son was in the condo that evening playing "dungeons & dragons" with some friends. They allegedly left some time before the murders took place.

So the real question is would the EAR have still attacked the victims had the D&D group been present next door. The EAR broke into the condo next door possibly hiding out after the murders. Another question that I have is where was the dog when the EAR broke into the condo next door?

Did the EAR know the D&D group was present when he committed himself to attacking Manning? When did he see Manning? I believe that he saw Manning when Offerman returned home after going over to his son's house. A witness heard 3 voices outside of Offerman's residence when Offerman returned home. One was Offerman's. Another voice was a female. The 3rd voice was a male. Who was this 3rd voice and why has he not come forward to say he was the 3rd voice? (If the voice was not the EAR?)

Other questions: Where was the dog when the EAR left the crime scene? Why didn't the EAR take the bicycle that he had stolen prior to the murders and was obviously going to be used as his getaway vehicle (as he had done on 10/1/79)?

I would certainly be interested in interviewing and running a criminal check on the owner's son and friends today to see if there is a connection between them and the ear/ons. There could be a connection to the ear/ons that got overlooked. It may take a few LE manhours but it could be well worth it.

He likely chose Manning because he was a violent sexual predator, and she struck his fancy. But if he chose her for some other reason, as you seem to insist, then I think he's the only person who can reliably answer your question. (Doubtful he would.)

Funny, creepy and sadly true. Creepy for the boys to realize after the fact that this may have been the case. Because of the burglary activity though I don't think he was in the closet (at least that type of closet, considering the post under the other thread that his jacket may have come from a gay leather shop.)

Read the thread titled "Davis 6/24/78 Golden Bear Sportswear Jacket" Guessting supplied us with new, very interesting information about the jacket. It appears the EAR/ONS left behind a blue suede Golden Bear brand jacket. Trying to trace the jacket, they could only find two stores in San Francisco that definitely carried that jacket in that color and both were gay leather apparel stores. (That jacket was carried in Sacramento but the manager and an employee say they don't believe they carried it in that color) In a psycological profile it is stated that they believed EAR/ONS was in a "homosexual panic" and now the connection to the gay apparel store, ergo the double meaning of "in the closet".

Time of burglaries
Hi Port, Well, I am just passing on the information I have. It is curious that it was reported one burglary at 8:00, one at 8:05 (that is strange) and like you say the people were gone. Possibly the police were putting together estimates based on information that was not included in what I have. It is specified that the estimated time of the other burglary was 9:00p.m. but the people were gone from 6p.m. to 10:15p.m. so I have no idea why they give the estimate of 9p.m. I have limited information. Nothing I am saying is coming from my personal knowledge except for what was taken from my neighbor's home. It is interesting that a neighbor on Queen Ann saw a woman knocking on the door of Mr. H.N. at 6:10p.m. and Mr. H.N. was gone, then she saw a man knocking on Mr. H.N.'s door at 7:00p.m. then she saw the same man knocking on another neighbor's door at 7:30 p.m. Mr. H.N. was burglarized at some time that evening, yet Parejo is stated as being burglarized at 8:00 which makes me imagine EAR/ONS going back and forth several times. First up above Cathedral Oaks then down to Parejo area, then back above to Queen Anne area. I accept what you say though as you are much more knowledgeable and I consider you the expert.

11/30/74 -- Visalia had ELEVEN ransackings within a few hours. Walking, bike, or car? They happened in TWO distinct neighborhoods. Sandia, can you say what specifically was taken in the Goleta cases?
The only reason I know what was taken in one of the burglaries is that I know the homeowner and she told me they were throwing loose change into a Sparkletts bottle and there was quite a bit of it in there. He stole mucklucks and she theorizes that the mucklucks were used to transport the coins, and some spilled coins were found in her back yard. He stole another item, which I can't recall for sure right now if it was one earing or a ring. I don't know what was taken from the other burglary victims homes.
This guy must have been driven by some kind of compulsion/anger/excitement , although its not the subject of this thread I have to say seeing coins turn among the loot taken (again) leads me to conclude this guy was the VR (plus the multiple burglaries in one night) . VR/EAR/ONS seems to have followed certain patterns he repeated in various areas over time.

Yes, and that is what is so incredible. This guy should have been caught so many times. Who knows maybe his luck did run out and we just don't know about it.

I think the biggest problem with all these cases is that Santa Babara LE originally dismissed these crimes as having any connection to the other rapes and murders. In addition, there was a lack of communication between LE in different counties where these crimes occurred. DNA finally proved and dismissed all possibilities that this weren't by the same person.

In fairness to the Santa Barbara Sheriffs Department they were one of the first if not the first to suggest that the cases were linked and they were absolutely right (http://www.jjmcgr.org/BK/Clippings/810802.pdf)
What also impressed me about this article is how they even dubbed him the night stalker in 1981! Its unfortunate the other departments refused to see sense and Santa Barbara threw their toys out of the pram!! LOL . Its quite eerie how the article 30 years ago correctly states that there is a pschopathic killer murdering SoCal couples............

Read the thread titled "Davis 6/24/78 Golden Bear Sportswear Jacket" Guessting supplied us with new, very interesting information about the jacket. It appears the EAR/ONS left behind a blue suede Golden Bear brand jacket. Trying to trace the jacket, they could only find two stores in San Francisco that definitely carried that jacket in that color and both were gay leather apparel stores. (That jacket was carried in Sacramento but the manager and an employee say they don't believe they carried it in that color) In a psycological profile it is stated that they believed EAR/ONS was in a "homosexual panic" and now the connection to the gay apparel store, ergo the double meaning of "in the closet".

I like the closet comment.. nearly cracked my ribs laughing and rolling..........on a serious note :.considering that EAR never exhibited any gay tendencies during his crimes despite having numerous opportunities to do so after the male was tied up in attacks on couples I am inclined to believe that either the jacket was stolen or he simply fancied it and bought it in a SF gay store..............or maybe EAR had a secret fetish for leather (and possibly bondage since the two go along together with most individuals) ; funny enough this got me wondering maybe EAR was into some kinky behaviour and since he travelled around a bit maybe he dropped into the gay leather shop on a spur of the moment;...........

Crompton's book mentions -- and I don't recall exactly which page -- that Offerman was sodomized, possibly after being killed.

If I am not mistaken, that is because of the position he was found in. I don't want to go into it because it is not respectful of the dead. But other than the odd position he possibly fell into, I am not aware of anything else that would suggest that. And not to beat my idea into the ground, but the more I hear the more that is coming out that convinces me that he tried to frame people, possibly as a red herring or possibly as a vendetta against some people. The jacket could actually be one of those red herrings. He dropped a badge at one crime scene and then a jacket at another, was he getting careless or was this on purpose?

Funny how so many people have these anecdotal stories about friends or relative, etc. Usually theres some kernel gleaned from the case and sh!t built around it. It never passes a sniff test.

And like the jacket story, too. Theres this jacket that might be earons or not and it could only come from earons because a meeting was called and the cops put an ad in the paper and there were only 100 of them made and they were only sold in gay-bondage stores.

The cops took the jacket as evidence, but there's no talk of them dusting it for prints, combing it for physical evidence, etc? The witness who talked to this man in this mysterious gay jacket didnt give a physical description or help make a composite, even though she was a resident and they knew they could come back to her on that matter? And no store clerk in the only 2 gay bondage stores that sold a BLUE leather jacket, which were in limited supply, ever noticed this buy or the same customer buying a leather hood. Could any or all of these things have happened? Yeah, but these things are built by rumor and leaps of logic by some of the people on this forum into semitruths, if not outright facts. There is more than wiggle room around all of these 'facts'.

Also, the idea of a perp in a "sexual panic" sounds like something that would have been believed in the 70s because they also believed in enought stupid sh!t about homosexuals to put them in the DSM and even dumber things about serial sadistic killers. Like the 'dominant mother' theory, which it's own theorists have debunked, years later.

Also, let me point out that people also take their cues from popular culture or popular culture reflects the dumb sh!t that some questionable science pushes, at any given time. For example, Looking For Mister Goodbar (1977). How closely have people here probably unknowingly (?) shaped earons to fit the villain of the book/movie? A. Lot. And that premise, that men who are latent homosexuals have to prove to themselves that they can f!ck women and when they cant they get murderous, is sort of ridiculous. Especially when we know much more about rapists and sadistic rapists and sadistic serial killers liek we do nearly 40 years later from ears reign and when that crappy movie came out. Ears is in control, he never loses his sh!t and beats or kills a woman, because he cant get his penis hard. He doesnt even take anything like this out on them verbally. And in 50 rapes, youd expect it at least once. But no.

Rapist dont always have perfect erections. Rapists dont even ejaculate a lot of the time. And tellingly in this case, the focal point of all of the attacks which are probably 50+, are women. Ears shows no interest in anyone but the women. The men are dealt with, the kids are dealt with, the dogs are dealt with. The women are all sexually assaulted and/or killed. Because he wants to be in complete control of whom he desire, a woman. He's a sexual sadist, and he wants to hurt the object of his desire, because hurting them is what sates his desire. Which he did, half a hundred times, at least.

The prescient person in this story was the spokeswoman for the women's crisis center, who said, 'He's not a latent homosexual; hes degrading and hurting women because it gets him off (sexually).

I was being facetious in that post. I guess it went over your head. Within a few posts, ears was turned into a leather daddy. Nothing in his crimes suggest he had a leather fetish. His mask in the first attack sounds like something he made out of two of his dirty socks.

I am sure LE has since revisited this connection. However, for a long time I researched Marines for these reasons:

1) If VR is EAR ONS, Lemoore NAS was a naval air station with Marines present

2) On July 1, 1976 all branches of the service consolidated navigator training to Mather including Marine aviation units- first attack in Sac was June 18, 1976

3) The bull tattoo that is discusssed looks more to me like Chesty the Marine Corps mascot

4) The orange dragon patch mentioned in the Maggiore murders matches several Marine helicopter squadrons

5)Goleta had several defense contractors who developed and tested military aviation simulators

6) The Ear absences could have been military OTC or other training, e.g. Yuma

7) If EAR was in Marine aviation he could have been at Tustin, El Toro, Pendleton or Miramar

How old was Janelle's boyfriend? Did she meet his friends from the corps? None of the Marines I researched panned out, but there is always the possibility that Janelle was exposed to a killer through that relationship. One older Marine I looked at was stationed in Yuma in 1976, so I didn't pursue that line.

Janelle had many friends...

Many of her friends from school were male. Janelle was with a friend named Jon who was with her at the house that evening. After Jon left, janelle was killed. Jon was eliminated through dna. I'm wondering if this marine guy was watching her and Jon, and he got upset that she was with another guy. Could the marine have gotten jealous and killed her? I guess it is a possibility....

Jon probably came close to being a victim also that night. The marine friend would then been "ear/ons" and he would have been most likely min of 28 years old ( my guess 34) or up to high 30's so she would have had to been dating much older guy than she was. It could be the Marine but he has to match the age limits. It could be a friend of the Marine who she didn't like.

The perp felt some kind of rejection, something he could not handle and he killed her. Because he let the boyfriend go, leads me to believe the perp was not as sure of himself as he use to be. And as soon as the friend left, he was very upset and acted out because she had to "pay." So I would aim my age of the perp to 35-45 years old. The Marine could of had a contractor buddy or a relative or roommate that had a grudge against Jannelle. Anyway you slice this scenario, Janelle or her family cause the perp intentional or imagined rejection and the perp acted out. There is no way she was just random and this is why I believe the killer knew Janelle is some fashion. But I could be wrong, nothing is set in stone.

I tend to think he deliberately attacked single females in Irvine to ensure that those two crimes weren't linked to the other murders. I can't get past that he tried to make the Witthuhn murder appear like a robbery when as far as I know he did not do that at any of the other murder scenes. I know he took stuff from other crime scenes but I am unaware of him actually trying to set the scene (i.e. tv on patio) to make it look like the motive of the crime was first and foremost robbery. That just stands out for me.

But you could be right waterfrogger and he just wasn't as sure of himself as he used to be. That theory is just as sound. He was ten years older at this point and if he truly had been dormant since '81 it makes sense that he might be less confident than he once was.

The theory that he was injured in some way after '81 that reduced his physical abilities is an intriguing one that I have seen bandied about. Considering the physicality of his crimes, it could explain the five year hiatus (with all his running, jumping, biking etc. even a moderate say knee injury could seriously curtail his criminal career). The prowling etc. seemed an aspect of his MO and possibly had a pyschological as well as practical application for him. I don't know but I do get the sense this last murder was more impulsive. Maybe its the five year gap that makes me think that I'm not sure.

Either way, something makes me think he didn't anticipate the friend being there.

Good analysis huberti. We can not for sure know what his reason was; however, I will say that impulses are usually a lack of control and EAR showed some control until 1986. So I believe he was exerting a great deal of control while committing the crime in 1986. He had no control over something about the Cruz family and he needed that control back.

Another example, if you belive ER staged the crime scene at the Witthune's, he did so because he knew the family or knew something of them. The reason why I say he knew them is because a staged crime scene is done by someone that is close to the victim, not a random stranger or someone trying to change his M.O.

Of course we don't know everything about him and why he did these things. Was Janelle was his last? Who knows, EAR could have been out for only a month due to an accidental parolee or a prison escapee but those are abnormalities. I think like many, that he is walking the sreets.

I like the reduced physical ability approach. For whatever real reason caused his physical limitation, it could be an angle that he just had some sort of physical disability. An angle to run down like so many other fruitless angles.

They were not sleeping.
My take on it is that the male friend got out the front door before EAR/ONS could attack, they both heard a noise and thought it was the dryer in the garage, so he was in the house. However, what stands out to me is that he always attacked sleeping "couples", and when he attacked sole women they were usually asleep, but not always. Besides the seeming 5 year gap, this also is different.

Anyway, Mr. AmateurSleuth theorized Mr. EAR-ONS might've gotten a job as a cop in Orange County sometime around 1979, I believe...

By using his theory, this Theoretical Vietnam Vet/Cop/Dog Handler Suspect would have been around 29 - 33 years old in 1979........... which would make him 36 - 40 years old in 1986 ........

On an EAR phone call which was recorded on an answering machine you can hear voices in the background coming from the EAR's line.

However, these voices sound as though they were almost certainly being played directly from a television or a tape recorder. Perhaps the EAR was calling from a hotel room and had the television on at the time of the call, or perhaps he recorded the voices and played them on a tape. Listen to the way the women are talking in the background. It sounds like something from a television sitcom.

When an EAR victim received another phone call in the early 1990s, she noted that she heard children crying in the background.

It seems unlikely that in the case of the 1970s call there were living humans within audible distance of the East Area Rapist. They almost certainly would have heard his heavy breathing and his making death threats though clenched teeth.

The early 1990s call was never recorded on tape so no one can ever know what went on. But it does seem right up the EAR's alley to try and fool police by leaving false clues, such the illusion that he is a family man or perhaps working at a daycare, a hospital, etc.

The EAR did show somewhat of an interest in tape-recording devices. He stole answering machines and left calls on at least one answering machine. Relatives of ONS victims noted that they had recieved odd phonecalls in the days leading up to the murders. One caller was described as very odd and "obviously an older African-American male". The EAR was known to alter his accent in order to hide his identity. He sometimes talked through clenched teeth and with a gruff voice, and other times he spole with a southern US accent. It's very possible the "older African-American male" was really the Original Night Stalker.

One explanation could be that he was living in Visalia, Bakersfield or Porterville in 1974-1975 and was reading news accounts of the "Southern Drawl" serial rapist in Porterville. This is a description of the Southern Drawl Rapist's MO. Incidentally, Southern Drawl was arrested in July 1976 and had committed similar offenses in Sacramento. I think EARS ONS was a hollow man who mimicked other crimes he read about. He had no original thoughts as demonstrated when he rode the coattails of the Bedroom Basher in later crimes. The Ransacker was probably ready to move on and Southern Drawl provided his inspiration. I even believe he may have begun his ransackings at the same time another cat burglar was gaining notoriety for committing over 100 burglaries in Tulare and Kern Counties.

It would be nice to hear any other recorded messeges from EAR. There was more voice recordings correct? I would love to hear what some of his messeges sound like. About ONS calls.. that would be very odd if he was calling family members BEFORE the crimes took place. After they took place would be extremely creepy. Before would be too actually. Makes you wonder if this happened to more than one family, and if the messeges seemed simular in any way.

One of the ONS victims -- I believe it was Patrice Harrington* -- was very distressed in the days leading up to the murders. The implications are that she felt she was being stalked. Perhaps she heard footsteps in the night, perhaps she saw signs of an intruder in the house.

Multiple hang up calls were reported on the night of the attacks.

Hangups at the victims home or at neighbers/ family, relatives? I have read Mrs Smith was also paranoid the night of the murders according to a house guest, who was told to get inside the house fast. That would definitely be ONS style to stalk a victim.

Apparently, he raped more women in Sacramento than did the EAR and in a shorter time frame. From 1974-1975. To my knowledge he was never identified.

Since years of combing-thru case files have produced no viable suspect the most likely avenue to apprehend this offender is to locate where he originated from. I read on this Board a year ago that Det Shelby said that there was a burglary where a dog was murdered in Rancho Cordova. As far as we know there is no police record to back up his claims. However, after countless emails to Cordova Alumni, property record searches and telephone calls I can tell the readers here on this Board that this crime did in fact happen. This is what I was able to confirm.

One night in 1974 a neighbor noticed that there was a prowler outside the house next-door to him. He immediately called the police. The police did not find any suspicious activity and left. The neighbor noticed that after the police left the prowler observing the police leave, jumped off the roof and hopped over a fence that bordered a concrete ditch and dissapeared in the night. The police arrived a second time to investigate this roof-top prowler and entered the home where they found a dog that was beaten to death with a piece of firewood.

The neighbor decribed the prowler has a blonde teenager in military-style clothing. I was stunned on the similarity of this crime and the EAR and ONS attacks. The roof-top prowler has a similar MO to EAR in several attacks in Cutrus Heights. ONS was believed to have murdered a dog in Goleta during a burglary. The Smiths' were murdered with a piece of firewood just like this dog in this incident. The VR and EAR were know to wear military-style clothing. The description of the offender seems to match the prowler that shot R. Miller in 1977 (a 20 year-old with long blonde hair).

The location where this senseless attack occured was on the intersection of Dawes and Dolecetto. This is only a block away from where the EAR reign of terror would begin 2 years later. IMO we now can place EAR in Rancho Cordova in 1974. (Special thanks to Repoman and SOE for assisting me in researching this.) This is the lead that we have been waiting for!!

Yes, a dog was definitely killed in Goleta (oops Port said he was kicked but survived) and don't forget the dog that was knifed in someone's back yard in Goleta and the bloody dog prints on the foot path in Goleta.

A thought just occurred to me. It seems like everyone is thinking that if EAR/ONS was the VR that this crime could not have been by him. However, as was cited in the FBI study of serial killers, most of them come from broken homes by the age of 2 yrs. Could the connections between Visalia, Sacramento be that he was living with one parent (I wager his mother) in Visalia and visited his father in Sacramento in 1974. Then in 1976 he moved in with his dad or possibly both he and his mother relocated to Sacramento. Then at a certain age he moves out and starts moving on to the other locales.

I'm not aware of any dog in Goleta that was beaten with a log. We have three notable dog incidents on the periphery of the ONS crimes:

1) p. 446 Sudden Terror The dog stabbing incident two weeks before the HH attack where the dog owner asked to borrow a phone.

2) A burglary that occurred on the night of Offerman Manning in which the homeowners returned home to see from their driveway, the outline of a young man in their living room kicking their dog. The dog survived.

3) Dog's blood found on a footbridge after the Domingo Sanchez murder per newspaper and television accounts. A young blond man was seen standing with a dog earlier in the evening near the crime scene by a jogging mother and daughter.

I will defer to you Port, as I consider you an amazing researcher but I did get information that a small poodle was beaten to death on the night of the Offerman/Manning murders. No information was given on what EAR/ONS used to beat the dog. Anyway, I truly hope the dog was o.k.

Establishing A Timeline

In establishing a timeline, the Ransacker crimes started as early as April of 1974. There were notable breaks but he was quite busy, especially on weekends. The question is where does the dog beating fit into that timeline?

Also, what is the description on the 1974 blonde teenager? Was he a knock-kneed doughboy? At some point, I'm going to check with the description of Snelling's killer. I do believe he was rather chunky. I don't see Poppin' Fresh climbing and hiding on a roof.

I wish I could have gotten an exact date of the burglary. But too much time has passed to be that detailed. However this is not an either or situation. I believe EAR the Rancho Cordova Dog Killer and VR are all the same person. If the offender was originally from Rancho Cordova (the evidence points to that) and then went to Visalia for employment it would make sense that he would periodically visit back home. This would explain if the burglary occurred after April 1974 and also the disputed 10/21/75 attack in Rancho Cordova. This theory would also explain why you are not able to find the paraphilic behavior that an offender like EAR would most likely have pre-June 1976 in Sacramento. The bulk of his time he would have been in Tulare County which explains the VR crimes and the lack of similar crimes in Sacramento.

Eyewitness Descriptions are not always acurate

McGowan described the VR as a doughboy. Yet this "doughboy" was able to leap over a fence and avoid a police dragnet. Maybe he was just wearing a puffy jacket? Fat people are not known to leap over fences. He had blonde hair, a military jacket and a high-pitched voice. These facts match EAR. The VR profile said the he was trying to seek excitement. Didn't EAR write the poem Excitements Crave? These are the same people.

It is far easier to lose weight as a young person than someone who is older.

The Half-Mask composite sketch is a game-changer. We can no longer play the composite shuffle and rely on the fact that witness descriptions are unreliable. We know now with certainty what the EAR looked like in 1977. We are also certain what the VR looked like in 1975. These clearly are not the same individuals.

Both Det. McGowen and Snelling's daughter described someone between 25 and 30 years old in 1975. McGowen provided the details that made up the Ransacker composite sketch. Police officers are trained (either formally or informally) to be observant. He also was certain that he could identify the Ransacker if he saw him again.

His description of the Ransacker does not square with #15's description of the EAR. Further, if the blonde teenager seen in 1974 is, in fact, the EAR, that description does not square with either McGowen's or Snelling's description of the VR. It does square with the #15's description of the EAR. So, with all of this new information, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that the VR is also the EAR, IMO.

I am willing to believe that the teenager from 1974 MAY BE the future EAR. That is consistent with the new information. I am willing to believe that he MAY BE responsible for the 1975 attack in RC. It is becoming difficult for me to believe that he is also the Ransacker (based on this new information).

Beth Snelling was confronted by a man wearing a ski mask. Her description of him would have been tenative at best. We both know there was some dispute of the description and age of the person McGowan said he saw the night he was shot. A sketch was possibly redone to fit a particular suspect.

You say the EAR was a teenager in 1974. McGowen says he was 25 to 30 years old in 1975. It doesn't fit. No cruelty to dogs in Visalia. No gloves in Visalia. No rapes in Visalia. I possibly found a description from the 1975 attack where the victim said her attacker had "long, slender fingers". Ms. Snelling said her attacker had "short, stubby fingers". These are the facts.

I want to believe that the VR and the EAR are the same. I also want to believe that the EAR committed the Maggiore crimes. I argued incessantly that Goleta was committed by the EAR. For the sake of all of the different victims, I have to follow the evidence, not what I believe. Because if these crimes were committed by separate perpetrators, two perpetrators will get away with murder if the VR and the Maggiore murders were not committed by the EAR.

Refocusing back to Rancho Cordova

I forgot to mention that a teenage girl that attended Cordova High Shool lived at the house where the burglary occurred in 1974.


Why was this cluster so confined geographically? Why were the girls in this cluster so close in age? How was the EAR able to find so many young victims alone in such a small area? Why would he keep coming back to the same neighborhood when he could of gone East or West to find similar homes near the river to attack? To me the only logical answer is that the EAR grew up within the attendance boundaries of Cordova Gardens Elementary. He was their contemporary. In short he had a hit list. He probably did not live in the neighborhood at the time which is why four years out of high school he felt confident that no one could identify him. He was a commuter. Bottomline whoever the EAR was he had a special connection to and a intimate knowledge of the Cordova Gardens Neighborhood.

This is why he had the uncanny ability to find young girls alone in the middle of a neighborhood in Cordova Gardens. In many of the other clusters he discovered victims by chance and they varied widely in age and were spread out quite a ways geographically. Often they lived in homes that backed up to open space making them easy targets. In these other clusters he took what he could find, in the Cordova Gardens Neighborhood he already knew where to look. Only a kid who grew up in that neighborhood would know where all the girls lived.

The EAR's paraphilic activity followed him wherever he went. As far as we know, there was no paraphilic activity in the area of Dawes back in 1974. That is an issue. Everywhere else the EAR went, so did the mulitple prowlings, burglaries and hang-up phone calls.

Why would he do it everywhere else but not Rancho Cordova in 1974? He did it in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981. According to you, he did it in Visalia in 1974 and 1975.

So why not in Rancho Cordova in 1974?

If the VR is also the EAR and the EAR committed the 10/21/75 rape, that would have been probably the first time that the VR struck on a Tuesday. He was also back in Visalia 3 days later committing multiple burglaries. And he wouldn't rape again until June of 1976.

Starting in 1974 I believe this offender left Rancho Cordova and went to work in Tulare County, possibly as a construction worker or a defense contractor at Lemoore NAS. The reason that you do not see paraphillic activity in Rancho Cordova is because he was gone for most of the time period between 1974-1975. IMO this why there is only a handful of crimes we can possibly link EAR to in Rancho Corodva in the early days such as the March 1973 burglary (El Cedro Ct ) of a home where a teeenage girl Cordova High School Student (who would later become an EAR victim), the 1974 burglary / dog beating, another teenage girl from Cordova High School lived at that home as well and possibly the 10/21/75 sexual assault in the Rossmoor area.

As D'Ambrosia stated, paraphilic activity occurs in clusters. Rare does an offender indulge in only one. The EAR clearly was a peeper/prowler/burglar. Your theory is that he is from Rancho Cordova. so, you have yet to explain where the peeping, prowling and burglaries occurred while he was attending school? I can accept your explanation about 1974-75. But what about 1972 or 1973? Visalia sent out a teletype in search of crimes similar to the Ransacker. They came up nil (until the EAR showed up).

Most of these offenders start their peeping and prowling at around 15 or so. Where are these types of crimes in 1972 and 1973, if the EAR is from Rancho Cordova? We need to find them. I suspect that when we do, we will also find the young, future EAR.

You already probably found it Arch. That 1973 burglary where nothing of value was taken most likely was one of the very-first crimes committed by an ever-increasing psychopathic criminal. El Cedro Ct, where I believe this burglary occurred is only like a block away from several EAR attacks. Coincidentally (or not) this site is only down the street from Cordova High School. Since there was no police record on the 1974 incident I doubt we would find anything on lesser crimes such as peeping. We dont need to look any place else. This is where he was from.

From what I have read there was call placed to one of EAR's former rape victim allegedly apologizing for what he had done. She heard what she thought were childeren on a breezy day. I do have reservations on the honesty of the apology. I am thinking it was a low-risk way for EAR of reliving his fantasy under the guise of remorse. He knew that night when she went to bed she would be thinking of him and the attack, another way for him to control his victim. If EAR wants to clear the air I am all ears. If anyone has a different theory or knows more about the call please jump in.

Last year I posted something about a friend of ours in Stockton who very definitely fit the victim profile. She had a plainclothes officer posing as a boyfriend for about six weeks because she came home and found a glass in the sink with a "sample" in it. Could have been a neighborhood kid who thought she was hot (She was, still is). Or the EAR. This happened right after the first Stockton attack. And cops never tell you everything they know. Sad thing is they didn't tell each other everything they knew about the EAR.
I was shocked and intrigued about this incident, I was wondering was this "sample" taken in as evidence and if so was it ever tested?. And one thing I couldn't get out of my mind is what sort of mind cooks up ideas like leaving "samples" in a woman's glass .......
