EAR Timeline Events

12/2/77 - SCSD PBX Operator receives a phone call from someone claiming to be the EAR saying that he will commit another rape. Later that evening, the EAR attempts to commit another attack but was thwarted by the noisy teens.

12/9/77 - One of the EAR victims receives a phone call from the EAR. He said, "Merry Christmas, it's me again" and then hung up.

12/10/77 - SCSD PBX Operator receives a phone call from someone whispering, "I'm gonna hit tonight. Watt Ave." He called back and said the same thing.

12/11/77 - The Sacramento Bee, the Mayor's Office and KVIE TV receives the poem from the EAR.

12/12/77 - The mysterious masked bike rider was seen on the Watt Ave bridge and a chase ensues. The masked bike rider abandons his bicycle and eludes his pursuers. The bicycle is later determined to have been stolen from Redding, CA.

1/2/78 - The EAR makes the "gonna kill you" call to one of his victims.

Channel 40 Special

Fox Channel 40 aired a special on Sunday Dec 18, 1977 in primetime throughout northern California: "In a Terrified Community: The East Area Rapist." This hour long special aired at 8:00 pm against the usual Christmas specials(Dean Martin etc.) Did the content of this program appease or ignite EAR? I think it speaks volumes to the atmosphere in the affected communities, that a network would offer this special against the primetime hoiday fare.

Port, hard to say whether the 12/18/77 special appeased or ignited the EAR. The additional publicity certainly had to curtail is prowling activity because of increased public awareness. I know that the increased vigilance as well as the anti-burglary precautions had to put a crimp in the EAR's ability to easily break into homes in Sacramento.

If that was him riding on Watt Ave., the police almost catching him also had to anger him (especially if he was the one who tipped them off). That anger and frustration apparently reached the boiling point and motivated him to call and threaten to kill one of his victims on 1/2/78.

Within that time, he was trolling around an area of Rancho Cordova a little further west from his usual comfort zone. He was clearly intending on committing another rape in the area of where the Maggiores were murdered. There were the bizarre burglaries as well as the hang up phone calls. I suspect that his efforts to attack a new victim in the Rancho Cordova area didn't pan out. That resulted in him losing control and just kicking in the door of his 29th and 30th victim.

For those that believe the Maggiore murders were committed by the EAR, it would follow that a confrontation in Rancho Cordova would have been inevitable. In either case, the Maggiore murders would have made it certain that the EAR wouldn't show up any where near Rancho Cordova. He, in fact, showed up in Stockton and then in South Sacramento where he was seen without his ski mask.

The EAR wouldn't need a psychic to tell him that his days were numbered if he continued offending in Sacramento. So, he goes to between Modesto and Davis (two communities that were previously unaffected by the EAR). Once he spread the terror to those communities, he left for Contra Costa County.

EAR vs Airmen

If the majority are right about the EAR and the EAR alone being responsible for the murder of the Maggiores, then there is no problem. We're ALL looking for the EAR/ONS and we will eventually find him. If he is alive (and I believe he is) he will be brought to justice not only for the EAR/ONS crimes but also for the murders of the Maggiores.

If I am right and 2 or more airmen were complicit in the murders of the Maggiores, then one or more people will be getting away with murder. We've got to get this one right. Everything that I have seen and heard so far lead me to believe that 2 or more airmen were directly responsible for the murders of the Maggiores. One of them may or may not have been the EAR.

For Brian and Katie's sake, I want to be 100% certain that only the EAR was responsible. Right now I am only 10% certain. And that is only because of the shoelaces. If it were not for the shoelaces, I wouldn't believe that the EAR had anything at all to do with these murders.

It is a "IF/Then" statement. The key word is "IF." IF the EAR committed the Maggiore homicides, all you have to do is find the EAR and the Maggiore's killer has been found whether he confesses or not. A little waterboarding should do the trick.

If he is not the killer of the Maggiores and believed to be (whether he confesses or not), then whoever actually killed the Maggiores will have gotten away with murder. For the longest time, some people believed that Brett Glasby committed the Goleta murders. The case was closed as far as they were concerned. Well guess what? Glasby didn't commit the Goleta murders. The EAR did. Case not closed until we find the EAR.

You could get anyone to confess to the Maggiore murders if you waterboarded them, but that’s a different subject for a different message board. The investigator(s) for the Maggiore murders is working on that case. Let him/her/them develop leads and theories as they see fit. The Maggiore case should not be a focal point for catching EAR/ONS since there is much debate as to whether he is even responsible. First we need a suspect for all of the other crimes we know EAR/ONS committed. THEN see if you can connect him to the Maggiore murders. He may not be responsible at all and although I don’t have a strong feeling either way, I don’t think he is the killer in this case…

Sherlox, I was not serious about the waterboarding. It's called being facetious.

As for the Maggiore and EAR/ONS cases, we've let the investigators develop leads and case theories for over 30 years. We have seen the evolution of case theories in that time. We've gone from the EAR not being connected to the Maggiore case. The EAR not being connected to the Goleta cases. The Goleta cases not being connected to the Ventura/OC cases. The Ventura case not being connected to the OC cases. To all of them being connected to the EAR/ONS. We still do not know about Visalia which seems as though it should be connected.

If the original investigators had their way, Brett Glasby would have been sitting in jail for the Goleta cases. Joe Alsip would have been sitting in jail for the Ventura case. If Joel Davis didn't intervene in the Riggins/Gonsalves case, David Hunt would be sitting in jail for their murders and Richard Hirshfield would have been freed from prison to do God knows what.

So, you'll understand if I don't take your advice about just letting the investigators develop leads and theories. Respect their opinions and position of authority, yes. Letting them develop leads and theories? We've had over 30 years of that with no arrests.

The information about the Maggiore case came as a result of my interest in the EAR/ONS case. So now I am supposed to ignore it? I don't think so. I remember the night that Brian and Katie were killed. I also remember living through the nightmare of the EAR. Brian and Katie deserve the same justice that John and Sabrina eventually got. That justice did not come as a result of investigators "developing their own leads and case theories."

And justice still waits in their case. It's also waiting in ours.

In the case of both the EAR and the Maggiores, whatever we find is forwarded to the investigators and they make the final determination. Right now, the lead investigator believes that the EAR/ONS committed the Maggiore murders. For the time being, that is going to have to be good enough for me. I must note, that Santa Barbara believed that their cases were separate from the EAR. It could very well turn out that the Maggiore murders were, in fact, committed by the EAR. So I am ever mindful of that.

I also realize you have put a lot of time into the case and care about it a lot and I respect that, but you are awfully self-entitled aren't you? Hey, if it wasn't for Arch's website, it would be very tough to come by the necessary information to gain an understanding of this case.... As great at the A&E and E! specials are, they both contain certain inaccuracies. The Bedroom Killer site is fine, but wastes it's breath on the EAR A/B theory and hasn't been updated in ages. Arch's sight is THE authority on the case aside from LE! Arch is a straight shooter who's care and dedication to this case has nothing to do with his own ego. If anyone around here is not self-entitled, it's him. He's certainly walked the walk and could talk the talk a great deal more than he cares to.... All he's doing is letting anyone who cares around here know that he won't be posting for a while.... Big deal!

As for water-boarding: I actually know a couple of guys, old friends, who were curious about water-boarding so they decided to try it on each other. They got a board and a garden hose and set up a water-boarding shop in one guy's garage..... As it goes, the experiment turned into a fist fight and these guy haven't talked since....... My point being, let's not be silly like these guys and create needless chaos and drama.

EAR/ONS and Couples

Two questions came to my mind over the weekend that I hope maybe some of you provide somewhat of an explanation for if at all possible:

1. Why did EAR continue to attack couples after leaving Sac? Initially, EAR took it upon himself to start attacking couples after the Sacramento press releases stated that he was only attacking single women. If EAR was attempting not to be connected to the crimes up north in Sac by altering his M.O., then why not go back to attacking lone females? After all, it is not likely that Det. Crompton or Investigators Pool and Heaney would have thought that Goleta was related if not for the fact the the victims involved couples. This goes back to another post that was discussed a few months back whether EAR got to the point where he liked having a male present or if it was incidental. I realize that only EAR/ONS can answer this, but any additional insight would be appreciated.

2. The FDLE profile states that in most cases, ONS needed to see his victims first engage sexual intercourse prior to attacking them, thus bolstering his justification for their deaths in that they were "whores." Why is this the case in the majority of the SoCal murders but not so in the EAR rapes? Why did he need to see this in SoCal, but not in Sac? Is it to prove that these women were "whores" in his mind as the profile suggests or was it just because he enjoyed it? If it was to justify his actions in his mind, then I feel that this says a lot about EAR/ONS. My understanding is that the majority if not all serial killers are sociopaths in that they do not feel remorse for their actions. This would cause me to believe that they would not need any justification for committing their crimes. Why does EAR/ONS? Also consider Goleta 1, where EAR tries to build himself up by chanting repeatedly, "I'll kill them..." One would think that the average sociopath would just kill them instead of trying to psych himself up for it.

I agree with your comments. First & foremost: EAR/ONS is a pure psychopath. He has no conscience; I'd go so far as to say that he felt he was completely within his rights to rape the women, murder his victims, and worse, psychologically torment his victims. If he's sorry, he's only going to be sorry when he's captured--and ancillary to that, when he is unmasked, the stigma that his family will suffer. I agree with with A76 has said for years: he wears "the mask of sanity." He will look "normal." He will blend in.

The Offerman circumstance is interesting because the more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to believe that he deliberately bound Dr. Offerman in such a manner that would assure the doctor of breaking his bonds and naturally anticipating the man lunging at him to stop the intruder from working the female over. I'm at a loss for how to explain the "justification" for this except to say: you can always expect an irrational mind to rationalize irrational actions. He had no reason to murder Dr. Offerman, Ms. Manning, his other victims, or to rape 50+ women in NoCal. The only observation I note is that this would fall in line with his concept of "scripting" his crime. In the 2003 SACRAMENTO MAGAZINE article, one early EAR victim described the attack--his actions during the attack--as being part of some script that he had preplanned and that he had to adhere to. This always remained in the back of my mind, and it would jive with how he behaved--how he evolved--during the ONS crimes. It makes sense: he's already enraged because he sees a woman acting like "a whore;" he loosely binds the male victim; the male breaks his bindings and lunges at EAR/ONS; EAR/ONS gets homicidal and murders the man and his partner. "Bang! I had to kill them."

Another thing to remember: I don't believe shooting victims was sexually arousing for him. Consider this:

1. 1 October 1979: Goleta I (A Five-Alarm F*** Up--he lost control of the scene); 2 Survivors

2. 30 December 1979: Goleta II; Dr. Offerman & Ms. Manning murdered (firearm).

3. 13 May 1980: Ventura Co.; Lyman & Charlene Smith murdered (bludgeoning; Mrs. Smith raped).

4. 19 August 1980: Dana Point, CA; Keith & Patrice Harrington murdered (bludgeoning; Mrs. Harrington raped).

5. 5 February 1981: Irvine, Orange Co., CA; Manuela Witthuhn murdered (bludgeoning; rape).

6. 27 July 1981: Goleta III; Greg Sanchez & Cheri Domingo murdered (non-fatal firearm wound to Sanchez; bludgeoning; Ms. Domingo raped).

7. 4 May 1986: Irvine, Orange Co., CA; J.L. Cruz murdered (bludgeoning; Ms. Cruz raped).

With the exception of Ventura and Dana Point, EAR/ONS uses a firearm at Goleta II & III. Common denominator? Couples. Why does he use a firearm here in these two instances, but not in Ventura or Dana Point? Did he spend more time at the scenes in which he didn't use a gun? Was there more psychological torture being doled out? I wonder if perhaps he played Goleta III the same way he did Goleta II. He took his time with the lone female victims in the ONS saga, and weirdly, he goes from four couples back to a lone female (Witthuhn) in '81. Notice that the lone women were both in Irvine. In my heart, I feel that by this point he was permanently living in SoCal--specifically, in Irvine or close by. Why didn't he attack couples in Irvine is the question that's eating at me.

From observing EARs behavior it seems he used firearms when he was threatened e.g. Det McGowen, R.Miller, ............I think in the two Goleta attacks were he used the gun things did not go according to plan hence he dispatched them with the gun, in Goleta 1 evidence suggests he probably did not bring his gun thus when he lost control he fled and the weapon he had at that crime scene was the knife from the kitchen. Another thing that leads me to believe that things didnt go according to plan in the two Goleta attacks were he shot them is that there is very little evidence of rape of the females which in itself is revealing considering that this guy raped other victims...........hence I couldnt help but wonder if he had intended to kill Manning and Offerman why did he not bludgeon them like the Smiths and the Harringtons? It is also likely that Offermann loosened the binds as opposed to EAR not tying them tightly enough, ...........hence I couldnt help but wonder was shooting them another sign that he lost control of them and felt threatened? Unlike Goleta 1 this time he was armed and made sure they would not escape. The lack of evidence of rape to Alexandria Manning and Cheri Domingo , to me , indicates everything did not go perfectly and he thus shot them and left before completing all his rituals.
I thought Cheri Domingo was raped too.

I'm not sure Manning wasn't raped. I've heard various things. Rape kit lost/missing. She was raped, she wasn't raped. I don't know. Maybe someone else can step in and answer this. I wouldn't put money on the fact she wasn't raped though. This guy was a true monster. How can anyone really understand an insane mind, how can good people understand pure evil.

@dan: I agree with you. I believe that he always brought a firearm with him after Goleta I. Yes, he was known to use it if cornerned, but Goleta II & III differ slightly in that the male victims either freed themselves of their bindings or somehow got the drop on him. This didn't happen in Ventura or Dana Point. I'm just tossing the idea around that perhaps he deliberately bound them loosely in those Goleta cases so that he had reason to shoot the males--justification, if you will. Sandia made a good point: this might have something to do with EAR/ONS having had a domineering mother and/or some weird religious fanaticism. I consider this because it ties into this notion of "scripting." Everything he did was scripted, and I believe that he experimented a bit during the ONS crimes. His mind is a black hole, so who really knows what he was thinking. We won't know until he is captured, and even then it's a question mark: I don't feel that he's capable of telling the truth unless he's hooked up to a car battery.

It's always good when Mr. Lee Van Cleef makes an appearance on the board. Your insights have always been thought provoking and right on in my opinion and I'm glad to see nothing has changed.
You had me thinking about ONS deliberately loosening Offerman's bindings. I have never considered this before, but the more I thought about it, the more it began seeming very plausible. Here's my reasoning: 1) ONS recently botched Goleta I - which had to be embarrassing for him. He had been successfully committing attacks for years on couples up north. He last attack in Danville I believed was thwarted by the light sleeping husband who probably scared the shiz out of EAR. More than likely, this bruised his ego to a great extent. Coming off this failed attempt, his first attack in SoCal (Goleta I) was also a disaster. Whether ONS would have killed the Goleta I victims if given the chance at the time, we will never know. They obviously felt that he was going to, but so did many of the other EAR victims as well. I'm inclined to think that he was still not fully ready to kill yet evidenced by his trying to psych himself up. To me, he still needed some sort of justification in his mind. When they escaped, that was it - no more witnesses. He had made the decision to kill. However, I still think he was in need of the necessary justification to actually do it.
By deliberately loosing the bands, he enticed Offerman to come at him, leaving ONS no other choice in his warped mind to shoot him. This eerily reminded me of the EAR attack previous where EAR taunted the male victim to go for the shotgun in the corner. Now once he had killed, there was no turning back and he therefore justified that he was already going to hell, so he might as well enjoy the ride. I'm just speculating and thinking out loud.
As far as Irvine goes, I agree that he he lived there post Ventura. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think it was a coincidence that David was at the hospital. It is just odd to me that Witthuhn and Cruz both lived so close to each other and both were killed when they were alone. It had to be that way so it would not be connected to the other slayings and would not attract the attention of LE who were already considering a connection among the other crimes as evidenced in numerous articles. Furthermore, after the Goleta III slayings, there were articles speculating a link between all the Goleta, Ventura, and Orange County Crimes...but did not include Witthuhn's murder as possibly being related. Couple that with the fact that the Witthuhn crime scene was staged. How coincidental that Janelle Cruz also happens to be murdered when her family also just happened to be absent as so no to attract LE attention of being linked either. Speaking of coincidences, was it also just a coincidence that Sanchez just happened to be passing through Goleta that night? Who knows. I do think he travelled back up to Goleta in July of 1981 to commit an attack so that investigators would focus their investigation up there instead of in Orange County.

Likewise, and same to you. I still keep tabs--maybe one day, sooner rather than later, we'll be seeing his ugly mug on television or on the Internet with CAPTURED under it.

It was only recently that I started considering the possibility that EAR/ONS deliberately bound Dr. Offerman in such a fashion so as to assure the man's freeing his person with the belief he would lunge at EAR/ONS, but the more I consider it, the more it makes sense. Yes! You mentioned the shotgun episode in an EAR case in which the suspect dared a male victim to reach after a shotgun in the corner. Furthermore, there were also instances in which he had emptied victims' handguns and made it clear that had they gone for their weapons that they'd have pulled their triggers on empty chambers. This behavior makes it clear beyond doubt just how methodical and sadistic EAR/ONS was. It's a game--and in a way, so is this idea of requiring "justification" for murdering the victims. Make no mistake, though: EAR/ONS--and I would LOVE IT if he read this--was, is, and always shall be a coward and a pathetic weakling of the highest order. Suppose that we are correct with our hypothesis; that Dr. Offerman was bound lightly--do you think EAR/ONS would turn his back for a second? Of course not. With few exceptions, EAR/ONS took calculated risks and he would NEVER place himself in a position whereby a victim might have a fighting chance.

I know this was discussed months ago, but it's good to bring up again: like you, I believe that he was situated in Irvine in the early '80s, and that he is most likely still there if he is alive. I don't believe in coincidences, especially in these cases. The facts cannot be denied: Irvine ought to be a focal point as the Witthuhn and Cruz residences are within a mile of each other and there is a park that separates the two--a classic EAR/ONS hallmark. I would also mention that I'm glad to have read poster MovieMan's comments pertaining to the Janelle Cruz case as he shed light on the cases that I was otherwise unaware of. The incident of the prowler the night before Ms. Cruz' murder and the description of the fence by which this prowler--certainly EAR/ONS--conducted his surveillance reeks of HIM. After having read your thoughts on the matter, I now feel confident of two things: one, he didn't attack couples in Irvine because of a greater probability of failure due to having a male present; and two, per your comments, if he did couples in Irvine, he'd have the local PD and OCSD on top of him in his (presumably) own back yard. Goleta, Dana Point, and Ventura were far enough away--all he'd have to do is hit the interstate arteries snaking through SoCal--but close enough that he probably wouldn't draw attention to his whereabouts from family, friends, co-workers. With the exception of Goleta, he was "one & done" in Ventura and in Dana Point. I do believe that by this stage in his life that he had a relatively stable existence that precluded him from hopping fences, peeping through windows, and burglarizing homes to the extent that he did in Sacramento/NoCal. Honestly, I suspect he liked Goleta because it was far enough away to stymie Orange County from making a connection to Santa Barbara--and subsequently, NoCal in the '70s--and because the general area in which he hit provided him his ideal battleground: well vegetated, cul-de-sacs, circular avenues, green belts, and the San Jose creekbed. He had plenty of escape routes, but much like in NoCal with the drainage ditches and canal networks, that dry creekbed would enable him to prowl the neighborhood privately and unseen. I don't like giving him credit, but it's really genius when you consider just how effectively he used the canal systems in California.

Remember that he was monitoring the news closely--television reports and newspaper articles--and after the disclosure of the ornate notes in Ventura after the Smith homicides, he began taking both the bludgeoning instrument and victims' bindings. He was already sophisticated with regard to concealing his identity. He discovered that the human head bleeds profusely when subject to blunt force trauma--he learned to cover the victims' heads to miminize blood spatter. True, he wasn't aware of the future developments in DNA identification, but I believe that after having been successfully engaging in these activities for so many years that he could manipulate LE to an extent by altering his crime scenes, diverting attention from one zone to another (think Irvine and Santa Barbara). He probably banked on LE either not making connections--as was the case with the NoCal and SoCal crimes for years--or being UNWILLING to make the connections: remember Santa Barbara made clear in no uncertain terms that Goleta I - III was not EAR/ONS. How did that turn out for them?

One other note about Goleta: Goleta was ideal for his purposes because he had contacts living there, and by that I mean that I suspect he had family living in Goleta. I don't think it was friends--family is more likely; I would expect family to be more likely to cover for a monster such as himself than friends. Gut feeling: I do think he is alive, and I do think he has family who know WHO & WHAT he really is. That second part especially sickens me.

The only other observation that I have is a grisly one: having considered this new possibility of deliberately binding the male victims loosely so as to ensure their fighting back thus justifying deadly force, I now wonder just how bad it was specifically in the Witthuhn and Cruz cases when he reverted back to lone female victims. This thought of mine was also brought about by a comment MovieMan made about Ms. Cruz being EAR/ONS' "Mary Kelly" and by a tidbit I recall from the now obsolete FDLE profile: I suspect that in these Irvine cases the lone female victims were subjected to some kind of enormous, over-the-top psychological and physical torture. Now I get the feeling that OCSD held back a great deal of intelligence. I will close with a paraphrase from a poster named Blinkyred from the Old Board: "If he had kept up at his rate, the murders would have gotten very bizarre; he'd have employed extreme torture because he was getting bored with usual routines." That alone defines what kind of monster EAR/ONS is.

I'm not convinced that his choice of Cruz and Witthuhn as women home alone was deliberate. I think he may have fully expected Cruz's male companion to spend the night. @dan: I agree with you. I believe that he always brought a firearm with him after Goleta I. Yes, he was known to use it if cornerned, but Goleta II & III differ slightly in that the male victims either freed themselves of their bindings or somehow got the drop on him. This didn't happen in Ventura or Dana Point. I'm just tossing the idea around that perhaps he deliberately bound them loosely in those Goleta cases so that he had reason to shoot the males--justification, if you will. Sandia made a good point: this might have something to do with EAR/ONS having had a domineering mother and/or some weird religious fanaticism. I consider this because it ties into this notion of "scripting." Everything he did was scripted, and I believe that he experimented a bit during the ONS crimes. His mind is a black hole, so who really knows what he was thinking. We won't know until he is captured, and even then it's a question mark: I don't feel that he's capable of telling the truth unless he's hooked up to a car battery.

I thought maybe as he tried to alter MO in Goleta he cut corners in his methodology and hence this resulted in males untying the binds and he had to shoot them as opposed to his favored method of killing which seemed to be bludgeoning.....

Another theory on getting loose

I just thought of another possibility. Offerman and Manning undoubtedly knew about Goleta 1 (H/H) that had just happened a few months before and close by and probably knew how EAR/ONS had been chanting that he was going to kill, and how the couple knowing this was not a burglary and they were going to be killed had nothing to loose by trying to escape and did escape successfully.

Now remembering what EAR/ONS's M.O. was, which was to have the woman tie the man up, then EAR/ONS would tie up the woman and then re-tie the man very tightly, could it be that Alexandria Manning tied up Dr. Offerman loosely enough that while EAR/ONS was tying her up, Dr. Offerman knowing that this was not going to be a robbery, valiently got himself loose before EAR/ONS could re-tie him? (that was a very long sentence) After Goleta 1, they may have known they were dealing with a would-be killer and just like in Goleta 1, decided that every effort must be made to escape.

It's a theory, not saying it's correct though.

In terms of Cruz, how long had her mom been out of town when the attack took place? You bring up a valid question....is it initially her mother that draws him to the home in the first place?

Good point. As I'm sure you know from having studied these cases: anything is possible with this criminal. More than any other serial offender I've read about, he invested the most time and effort into the planning of his crimes, their commission, and his reminiscences of said crimes. His prolific activity proves this.

If I had to guess, I would venture to guess that he kept using the diamond knot post-Ventura (Smiths) but due to his monitoring of the press, he began removing the ligatures along with the bludgeoning instruments. I don't believe he would deviate from his established pattern: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," if you will. I think he made a conscious effort to alter the crime scenes even further than what he already had, to throw investigators off by making the crime scenes look like burglaries gone awry--think of the television set and the answering machine from the Witthuhn home. The Irvine murders stand apart from Goleta, Ventura, and Dana Point because they were lone women--I do believe this was by design.

You very well could be right, however: maybe he did start cutting corners and it cost him by forcing him to use a firearm in Goleta II & III.

I would agree with you; however, he was already present when the male was with Ms. Cruz. He could have initiated his "blitz" attack at any time, and I have to admit: I would expect him to be more brazen and less concerned with a male teenager as compared with an adult male (think of Danville and the light-sleeping 6'2" husband). I don't believe he wanted to take the chance that he would lose control. Even in the back of his own warped little mind, he had to consider the possibilty that the next job could be his last--really, it's a miracle for him (and a curse to the rest of the world) that he wasn't blown away by an armed homeowner. Likewise, if it was so important for him to attack with a male present, he could have easily waited until Mr. Witthuhn was discharged from the hospital.

Irvine is different--he didn't want heat on him down there. Just my two cents.

No doubt the cititzens of Goleta and Santa Barbara County in general were aware of Goleta I, and I believe that post-Goleta I, newspaper articles appeared mentioning speculation of potential ties to all the serial rapes/bizarre burglaries going on in NoCal. These citizens didn't live with the fear that Sacramento lived with, so I would anticipate them to assume that this offender was ready and willing to murder; therefore, they would take their chances and fight back. You very well could be right about that.

Goleta II is an anomaly itself. As I recall, Dr. Offerman lived in a condo, and the next-door condo was vacant--sounds so much like young EAR in NoCal taking advantage of newly built empty homes, or homes up for sale. Furthermore, he had to have spent some time with the victims--this was the scene in which he and Woofy snacked on leftover Christmas turkey. Unfortunately, we will never know the chronology until he is captured, and even then I don't believe he'll be truthful with LE. By keeping silent--or lying--he gets to win one more time.

I agree that at the time of the Witthuhn murder, I don't think that ONS viewed men as an obstacle...as long as he got the jump on them. He could never go toe to toe, as he struggled with the mother of the teenage girl on the 8/29/76 attack. Whether he preferred to have a man present or not, I'm at a loss. But i do think that sometimes he felt that they came along with the package - meaning that if he honed in on a potential female victim out in the public to his liking, he would have no other choice but to also deal with the husband.

As far as whether he attacked Witthuhn and Cruz because they were alone, it's anybody's guess, but I do agree with AE7 on this. However, in the MSNBC program, Pool states that they believed that ONS was surprised to find Witthuhn home alone. To LE's credit, I'm sure they have a good basis for believing this. However, the fact that David had to go to the hospital suddenly does not convince me. Besides, I thought I remember reading somewhere that David had already been in the hospital for one day already and that she was attacked the following night (this could be inaccurate though).

We have to remember that ONS blended in very well- so well, that we still have multiple sketches of suspects that don't look like one another. However, AK Wilkes will probably disagree with me. My point is who's to say that ONS wasn't out in the open surveilling the area when Manuela took David to the hospital? ONS was a master at recon. He had an uncanny ability to know when husbands were going to be out of town, when parents were going to be gone. Who knows, maybe he worked at the hospital David was taken to as their is evidence that possibly points to a hospital connection. Prior to the attack, there is no doubt that he peeked in the windows to make sure nothing had changed, such as family visiting, etc. He knows what he is up against when he enters. It would be too risky if he didn't. This is supported by the fact that he would sometimes break into houses prior to attacking in order to get the layout of the house. He prepares well. He wants to know what type of situation he's entering before he actually does.

As far as Janelle Cruz goes, her family had only been gone about 72 hours when they were notified of Janelle's death. According to Movieman, ONS was watching the night before but was run off. One of the questions that has always eaten at me is why was the attack so early...why did he not wait until she was asleep. I am thinking that the reason he attacked right after the friend left was to pin it on the friend. Misdirection.

Either school of thought on this is plausible though. To me, it is just reminiscent of the two BTK murders that took place right down the street that were not connected to Rader until later - those which he did not taunt the police with.

Toe-to-toe. I like that. That's spot-on. He takes chances, but his chances are ALWAYS calculated--he will never engage in a fair fight with any of his victims. I agree that once he decided to make a female a victim that he would plan accordingly and deal with the male.

The only program I haven't seen pertaining to EAR/ONS is the MSNBC program, so his being surprised that Mr. Witthuhn wasn't present is news to me, but like you mentioned, LE must have good reason for believing such. I wonder if perhaps this was last-minute; i.e., that he discovered Mrs. Witthuhn was home by herself and he decided to attack anyway. Keep in mind the following: Irvine I (Witthuhn) followed Goleta II (Offerman/Manning), Ventura Co. (Smiths), and Dana Point (Harringtons). Perhaps he was concerned about SoCal LE connecting the dots and realizing that their murderer was hopping from county to county. If he goes back to a lone female victim, it could be a myriad of possibilities--an angry husband/boyfriend, a burglary gone awry, etc. Also, and I feel very strongly about this: he did not want heat on him, especially in Irvine. By the way, LS: I recall reading as well that same information indicating that Mr. Witthuhn had already been in the hospital PRIOR to the murder of his wife.

I agree with you on the reconnaisance: this was a tactic he honed in Sacramento. He wasn't going to deviate from that. His crimes were high risk; he knew this--he had no choice but to be organized and as prepared as possible.

I never considered that angle--pinning it on the friend--but I buy that, LS. Again, it worked out well for him: Irvine PD scoured Ms. Cruz's inner circle, and over the course of the investigation, nothing came of the prowling incident the night previous, or of the mysterious Kitten Man.

the mom was out of town vacationing in Mexico with the step dad and brother. Janelle was left home alone.

Sociopathy

There have been many great points made in this thread and I am inclined to agree with them all. Yet, I do think I can add a little extra to the sociopath question.



Not all serial killers are sociopaths. I couldn't tell you what percentageof them are, but some killers, like Jeffrey Dahmer, clearly exhibit signs of remorse. (Dahmer would regularly drink himself into a stupor to numb the guilt.) Conversely, many sociopaths never commit violent crimes. Some, and I won't name names, even become much admired celebrities who do charity work. They're just able to mask their selfishness extremely well. It's something sociopaths are very good at.



Sociopaths certainly don't need to justify their misdeeds, but they generally do. They love to rationalise their actions, albeit it in very selfish ways. A sociopathic bully who picks on 'geeky' kids would say, "It's their fault for being so geeky." Likewise, EAR-ONS probably had all sorts of reasons in his head. For instance, a female victim might be blamed for being pretty, leaving her curtain open, being with a man who wasn't him, and what have you. The male victim is even easier to blame, because of EAR's own insecurity. He feels so inadequate as a man (not simply due to the small penis, but that's likely part of it), that he is incredibly jealous of his male victims. At first, he was probably a bit afraid of the men. As he grew bolder, he started to enjoy terrifying and overpowering men, then eventually killing them. It made him feel like he was tougher and more virile. According to his reasoning, the men got what they had coming, because it was their fault for making him feel so inferior.



Of course, this is but speculation on my part, till he's identified.

EAR/ONS PENIS SIZE

It is well documented in Larry Crompton's "Sudden Terror" that the EAR had small genitalia as described by his victims. I am currently assisting in an investigation in which strong circumstantial evidence suggests a man formerly from Visalia, CA may have been involved in the EAR/ONS crimes. The only road block we have come across to this point is penis size. Women who have had intimate relations with this man of which I am speaking, claim our POI had a larger than average penis when erect. Can anybody comment to the fact that the EAR/ONS did or did not have a large erect penis?

Malapropisms

Could be the Rapist-Murder was a helium balloon who tried to sound more intelligent than he was. For example, instead of him saying, "I resent that remark," he might say, "I represent that remark (malapropism)." Were there other words he misused?
Regarding "small genetalia" that might include testicle size. What's the word on EAR/ONS's testicle size? I recall (think Crompton's book) that LE exaggerated the small penis size when passing information on to the Media. Guys, what's the word on partial erections? How much difference can it make in the short and long of things?

My "Contra Costa County Con Artist" and "The Aerojet Man" thread would explain why he has slipped thru not only all the television shows but also the data mining attempts. If a POI did not live in Contra Costa County or perhaps lived in LA County instead of SB or OC people might be hesitant to contact authoties.

I love the discussion but I was just looking for a list haha. That's ok I'll just pm someone, there are probably a few people who know everything thats out there.

I just don't think enough Californians have seen those episodes, much less Americans. Of course the most important thing is it has to be watched by the right people (like people who lived/worked/served military in NoCal or SoCal in the 70s and 80s), so the more popular the better. It’s probably just not enough publicity.

I remember talking on the phone to an old friend I used to work with about EAR. Only reason I brought it up is because I knew he grew up in Sac. He said “oh yeah I remember that guy.” He was probably born in 1981 or so. I don’t think he knew about the ONS part of the story either. I don’t think the case is very well-known, even in Cali. Some work needs to be done in the publicity arena as we all know. What’s cool is that each one of us on the message board can be a word of mouth publicity agent. I know that I’ve brought this case up to a lot of people that I know who like true crime and watch CSI, that kind of thing.

One thing that doesn't seem to be known for certain is the color of EAR-ONS' hair. Searching Crompton's book, I have created the following list of all descriptions of the hair colors of either suspicious individuals that have not been eliminated, or the rapist himself (usually leg or pubic hair, which was reported as dark in all cases except one).

THE RASHOMON EFFECT. Everybody sees different things, remembers
different things. I agree with you, sir.

Some time back I asked if it would be an insane idea to bring a savant named
Daniel Tammet into this case and see if he could find any connections at all in
the crimes.

I was thinking the other day about another savant named Stephen Wiltshire.

If Wiltshire had been a victim of Mr. EAR, I wonder what he would have
remembered.

I wish former profiler, John Douglas would run his magic over the reports, pictures, and written statements in this case. His expertise in profiling is legendary.

according to Crompton (Sudden Terror) LE has the EAR's actual hair.

So his hair color is factually known but to my knowledge unpublished.

I'll bring up an old post where I ramble on about EAR's hair (actual physical hair) and some other mtDNA info I dug up~~after I finish BBQ stuff outside...

I'll cite reference after reference on the likely color of EAR's hair (which is dirty blonde/light brown) SO all you who've read this before can skip my coming post(s).

EARONS Pattern with Children

From 6/76 to 4/77, EARONS attacked single women and women alone with children. This is his comfort level. Children are not hindering his game at this level.

From 4/77 to 7/79, EARONS attacked couples and couples with children. He changes his comfort level. Children are not hindering his game at this level, either.

But, when EARONS decides to purposefully kill......there are never any children. I believe this is care and planning on his part. There is info that EARONS would have killed a child if he had to, but he never planned to and he never did. He wasn't comfortable with children on this level.

Maybe, EARONS was the youngest in the family birth order. I think he had at least one older sister and older brothers. He related to the children in the homes he entered, on some strange emotional level. Dennis Rader was the oldest in the family birth order and had no regard for children.

EARONS referred to himself as a Pest....."Your East Area Rapist and Deserving Pest."

Any thoughts about how birth order affects the minds of these primitive humans?

Jane, I think that is a noteworthy observation, no children present during the killings or for the So Cal crimes in general.
For what it's worth, I think that the EAR had children of his own by then. I read about another serial offender who stopped victimizing children after he had a child of his own. (I can't remember who it was, though).

This is my version of what earons would look like in a ski mask. Please notice that one of the front upper incisors protrude and are larger than the other. There is a significant over bite. The eyebrows are actually a little blondish. The eyes are blue and the skin is fair. The nose, which is not visible here, is large, and narrow and pointed. EARONS

What have you based your version on?

What does that mean your version of EAR in a ski mask? Are you a confirmed victim of EAR? I understand if you are a victim and I am not minimizing the impact of being a victim..I respect the fact that you may be a victim of some crime but not a crime related to this serial rapist/killer. How would you have the first idea of what EAR looked like? If your guy was EARONS you would be dead by now. That I can say with certainty. He would never allow a victim to be posting wildly on some board. Once EAR began fulfilling his fantasy of killing, I find it highly unlikely he would play this drive by game or keep coming back to the scene to taunt you. It just does not make any sense. As capable as EAR was he would surely be reading your posts. g

Notice the teeth....if you have read my earlier posts..

you will know what I've based my version on. I put this drawing here because I figured if there are witnesses or survivors who have described enough information for the other image, than maybe my version would be more specific. I know many of you have your doubts about it all, but it doesn't hurt to try to narrow things down, now does it? If I am wrong than that will be obvious at some point.

EARs quirky habits!

EAR had a habit of hanging around the victims houses for hours in some cases (and even tucking into food from the victims house ); this has always struck me because of the large number of rapists,burglars and serial rapists that have been known very very few hang around the scene of their crime : what can we assume about him from this behavioural quirk?

It was all part and parcel of his need to control his victims.He terrorized them before he killed,and the hanging out afterwards gave him a chance to savor what he had done.BTK did the same thing in 2 of his murders,as well.Once he establihed that pattern of behaviour I doubt he would deviate from that scenario.He possessed them after death in much the same way Ted Bundy did.

He hung around and came back so the victims wouldn't know when he left the residence. Gave him time to get to his car/bike/motorcycle before the alarm was raised. Guy wasn't dumb.

Ramirez apparently did the same sort of things: hanging around for longer than he 'needed' to commit his vile acts, eating food from victims' fridges, going through drawers and private possessions etc etc.


Guys like this are showing their contempt for the victims and for society by treating the house as if it were their own - "I'll do exactly what I like and there's nothing anyone can do to stop me"- and are also perhaps trying to keep the victims in a state of fear (and themselves in a state of arousal) for as long as possible.

In addition - as f1guyus so rightly pointed out - the wandering about opening and closing doors allows the offender to further confuse victims as to whether he is still on the property, allowing for a clean escape.

The wandering about also allowed EAR-ONS to scope the property during his crimes - mainly checking for signs of activity in neighbouring properties and for approaching cars I would imagine.

As Dan mentioned, most rapists do not hang around the crime scene like EAR-ONS did.

For me, this shows confidence/arrogance, but also a kind of loneliness in as much as EAR wanted to be able to take his time.

If the young EAR used prostitutes, paid by the hour and resented having to 'watch the clock'; then perhaps in his warped mind, EAR-ONS wanted to view the women he raped as 'girlfriends' with whom there was no need to rush.

I believe that 'Sudden Terror' shows a man crying out for sexual attention - illustrated in his eagerness for foreplay and in how keen he was for victims to talk during the act - and that the 'time' element of the crimes also reflects this need for attention.

"The House Hermit" David Snow. A Canadian killer who broke into cabins when the owners were away did the same things like EAR/ONS also. I eliminated him as EAR/ONS because he had no history of living in Sac.

Something that's been bothering me....

I was reading Collen Cason's Dragon's Lair article (or novella would be more appropriate) and it struck me how odd it was that many neighbors of the Smiths reported weird prowler activity that had occured in the days before the murders. People found screens removed, holes/cracks in window panes, jiggled windows, crying babies, barking dos, etc..... It seems odd that someone actively prowling a neighborhood and leaving evidence would be so stupid to come back right afterward and sneak into someone's home in that same small area. For all he knew, neighbors had discovered evidence of his prowls and had alerted the police and their fellow neighbors, loaded their guns and put them under their pillows, meaning they'd be extra aware and attentive to odd sounds, prowlers, strange cars etc... (which they sadly were not until after the fact) ... The only sense I can make of this is that ONS did such obvious hot prowling on purpose in order to create the idea that he was randomly going from house to house trying to find one that was easiset to get into.... Assuming he went to all this effort to make it look like The Smiths had not be specifically targeted, begs the question... why?

If this has been discussed to death before, please forgive me.

That most people don't think a serial rapist/killer is going to rape and kill them. And they don't even want to think about the possibility. So they don't. EAR/ONS knew this and counted on it. I can cite you chapter and verse on people who want to be secure in their home and live in a safe neighborhood and want somebody else to do the heavy lifting. And when the lifting is done they complain about the people who did it. It's human nature.

Oh, trust me, I understand!

I can write all that stuff, but do I own a guard dog or a gun? Nope! Do I make sure my windows and doors are all locked? Not all the time!

I guess what I'm wondering is.... if it was important for this creature to try to throw off the cops that the Smiths were specifically targeted, could it be because the fact that they were targeted might somehow lead the cops to him if they took that route? (which of course they did and it lead them nowhere: but there's still the possibility)

Was this weird prowler BS present around the time of the Harrington murders and Withun, Cruz? Goleta even?

I have learned from a good source that there was prowler activity in the Smith neighborhood, even after the murders. This was classic EAR behavior. The night of the Offerman Manning murders there were at least 5 burglaries up and down the San Jose Creek Bed and they were typical EAR burglaries- one earring left on a bed, coins taken, jewelry carefully selected. This behavior does beg the question though- did he target the neighborhood first and then randomly select victims or did he see his beautiful victims and then follow them into the neighborhood for his usual reconnaissance.

After the crimes.
I'll wager that for about a month after every EAR crime the folks in the target neighborhood called 911 every time a bird chirped or a dog barked. Then they went back to sleep and EAR could go back to work. I'm going to guess that the vics were chosen first and not necessarily in their neighborhoods. If you look at the HS yearbook pics in the first Stockton vics class it was a target rich environment. And most of the girls that stayed in Stockton lived in the North Stockton neighborhoods where EAR offended. And shopped in Lincoln Village, played tennis at the Marina, worked out at the local gym and washed their cars at the do-it-yourself at Rivara Road and Pacific Ave. In hindsight it's easy to see all this guy had to do was drive, ride, or jog through.

Do you think this guy might have been a Ted Bundy type who approached a lot of women while out and about. Not necessarily as potential victims, but as just a good looking, well built (as witness descriptions attest) young guy trying to get laid? I'm just asking because if so, someone might remember him..... I'm grasping as straws, I know.

After the First Stockton Attack
Gals in Stockton wouldn't respond if you said "Hello". Even ones you knew very slightly. I'm older, taller, skinnier (at the time) and nowhere close to the "broad muscular chest" in the profile. And going grocery shopping with my wife was a whole series of nobody making eye contact. Even some of the gals we knew wouldn't respond to me. This guy brought the social scene in Stockton to a screeching halt.

Why? the My-Dog-Was-Stabbed guy. Wow. How much more memorable could this guy be? and the ultimate hinkyness of it all...dog vicously stabbed, use the phone and most of all--returning. with a rose. oh, and a story of the dog's 80-stitch fate. Being face to face engaging SEVERAL people in this ongoing saga?

What was dog guy trying to do? establish an alibi? (my first thought b/c the whole thing is so memorable yet so out-of-whack....)

He was within houses of the Attacker's future Toltec murders, within days of his H/H attack! He's like a shark circling each of his past, present and future haunts. waiting til it's meal time again.

OR he could have been chatting someone up...I mean, why return with the dog update? the rose? did using the phone in 1979 entail going into the person's house? seems like it did.

Meanwhile someone of the same description is hanging around soon-to-be murder sites. In the light of day.

I was absolutely focused on Goleta because so many people talked to HIM (?) and were at arm's length away...

More than likely scoped the areas out several times: driving through, bicycling, even walking the neighborhoods looking for his next victim. Night recons, figuring which doors and windows were accessible. An organized serial offender, ( Ted Bundy type), fits EAR/ONS to a tee, and leads me to believe he was obsessive/compulsive.

His attacks in homes were carefully orchestrated. The homeowners whose guns had been unloaded prior to his attack must have made his self esteem soar; thinking they were going to kill him, and he having the last laugh, so to speak.JMHO

I have wondered that same thing myself. Does seem brazen to re-enter neighborhoods as you describe. Maybe EAR figured these working class people would have to get to sleep eventually. Even people who have difficulty getting to sleep eventually fall off.

With so many people, sketches must have been made. My question is 1) were sketches made? 2) If so, which ones are the Goleta sketches?


On another note, although I think this person was the ear/ons, here is another possibility, in my mind at least: An innoscent person walking his dog, had the dog run ahead and into a back yard and encounter the ear/ons who stabbed the dog and the person that asked to use the phone was just somebody that was walking his dog. He returned to thank the people, they were not home so he just left the rose he planned on giving them on their door step. (I kind of doubt this scenario myself, but think it it a possibility)

That is really interesting. Where did you read or hear that though? I would imagine the individual with the dog that borrowed the phone would have been the one to leave the rose whether it was ear/ons or an innoscent dog walker.
Please let me know if you can recall where you heard that though just to be able to clear that up. I would like to know about the sketches still if any were made from the Goleta sightings if anyone knows. Thanks, Sandia

I don't think there were any Goleta killer related sketches made, though I could very well be wrong. The sightings were mainly just a white guy jogging with a dog and or a white guy acting like Michael Myers, right? Just standing there staring. Things like that. Observed from a far with no face sketches. But like, I said, I could be wrong.

Eye color

This feels perhaps trivial and not deserving of its own thread, but so be it. It occurred to me and is something to consider.

Because of the conflicting reports of the EAR's eye color (between blue and green, or blue and hazel), one possibility is that he had gray eyes. Which I wasn't even aware was an eye color (loath as I am to admit it, I don't know everything).

From Wikipedia:

Gray eyes are most common in Northern and Eastern Europe. Gray eyes can also be found in parts of North West Africa (Aurès Mountains) among the Algerian Shawia people and in the Middle East, most notably in Iran, Afghanistan ([the Indo-Iranian Nuristani people), and Pakistan (the Kalasha, another Indo-Iranian people); Under magnification, gray eyes exhibit small amounts of yellow and brown color in the iris. Ultimately, there are at least two things that determine gray eye color. The first is the amount of melanin made, and the second is the density of the proteins in the stroma.

A gray iris may indicate the presence of a uveitis. However, other visual signs make a uveitis obvious. Gray iris color, as well as blue, are at increased risk of uveal melanoma.

The "Northern and Eastern Europe" part is consistent with what's believed to be true about the EAR's ethnic heritage.
