Maggiore

OK, I'm going to try to get this going. If this case is ever going to be solved, I feel that its going to be either from information found on Maggiore or Cruz. However, we don't even know for a fact that Maggiore murders were done by ear. I think it definitely was, but it would be nice to get some other opinions. I found it pretty interesting from looking through old posts. In the early posts many people thought that Maggiore wasn't related. It seems that now that most feel ear murdered both of the Maggiores.

Are we missing an angle somewhere? The Maggiores were targeted but why? Was ear in Maggiores unit? Did he personally know them? Who was the target, was it Katie or Brian? Is it a coincidence that ear stopped in Sac after the last sketch?

What do you guys think?

Almost seems there's a case for Maggiore being targeted by a co-worker or having crossed EAR in action, but it's highly unlikely EAR and the co-worker are the same person. The circumstances of the case suggest them being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In the Cold Case episode there was mentioned the case of a town meeting that was held at the time of the EAR hysteria at which over 600 people attended. One gentleman made a point quite forcefully at this meeting that he couldn't believe any man could allow his wife to be raped while letting himself be tied up. This man was subsequently targeted and suffered this exact fate. This would point strongly to the fact that EARONS was at the meeting and may have even followed the man home.
I would like to know if there are any existing lists of attendees of this meeting and/or any LE surveillance info.

Maggiore Theory Restated

My case theory regarding the Maggiore murders has not changed substantially. I believe that the preponderance of the evidence suggests that the Maggiores were stalked by two or more suspicious persons with military-style haircuts, Suspects #1 and #2.

Because the shoelace was left next to Sgt. Maggiores body, I am reasonably concluding that it was left there by Suspect #1. Suspect #1 MAY HAVE BEEN the EAR. But he was in the company of Suspect #2 right before the shooting.

So the Case Theory restated is that Suspect #1 and Suspect #2 conspired to murder the Maggiores. Because the EAR has been known to bind his victims with shoelaces, and a shoelace was dropped at the scene of the crime by Suspect #1, it is possible that Suspect #1 is the EAR.

However, because Suspect #1 was in the company of Suspect #2 right before the shooting, it is reasonable to conclude or surmise that the murders were not related to an attempted 261 as this is not consistent with the EAR's distinctive M.O. though not completely impossible.

So, I am certain, based on the available case information, that at least two people were involved in the murder of the Maggiores, one of whom may have been the EAR but that he did not act alone.

The witness statements are part of the factual record. What the witnesses actually said are case facts. That is the only reason you know anything about this case. As to whether what they said is accurate is disputable.
Exactly. You say the witness is correct and the lead detective believes that the witness is mistaken. Of course the lead detective has all of the case files and knows many things about the case that you and I don't.
I get what you are saying, but you act as if none of the detectives on the EAR-ONS case have ever been wrong!
As Arch has shown, the witness statements indicate at least two men involved in the Maggiore shootings - in order to get around this, one needs to claim that (numerous) witnesses were wrong.As you suggest, the shoelaces found at the scene indicate that the EAR was involved - to get around this, one needs to claim that the laces were 'planted'.Neither scenario is without flaw - so surely we should move on from all the arguments and pursue BOTH theories (plus IMHO the additional theory that EAR was there as one of the TWO men)...
I agree time to move on. I also agree that if there were two men (and for all I know there were) then one of them (99% sure) was the EAR. This is based on the strength of the EAR style laces being found at the murder scene.
...then it tells us a lot about EAR.
If EAR was part of a pair or a team that night, then he was not a Dennis Rader style law-abiding loner.If EAR was in part of a team, then he would seem to be more of a Phillip Arthur Thompson type - linked with other serious criminals, possibly involved with the drug trade, and by no means secretive about being up to no good.Perhaps EAR was like Thompson - a 'bad boy' with connections who got away with lots of 'official' crimes, and a murdering, raping monster in his own time.If we know that EAR was involved as part of a team, then we can almost definately rule out the idea that EAR was a mild-mannered accountant or civil servant.

Task Force?

You know I was thinking the same thing. It would appear that there is a task force looking for the POS. In most cases like this LE publicly annouces that a task force has been created and asks for the publics help. For some reason LE in this case prefers to pretend that there is no task force. Why do you suppose that is? It's a real puzzler.

Problems with this from where I sit. Gacy blamed his victims at times calling them "worthless queers and punks". I can't imagine he would have not spilled the beans on anyone else. The fact that some died of asyphixation not strangulation may be explained by Gacy shoving the gags of his victims down their throats (damn, can't get much more brutal.) This theory was presented to Gacy and he denied it but I would not consider exactly honest. Also, he did not copy the Houston mass murders he merely got the idea of binding his victims to a 2x4 from the torture board Dean Corll used.

Robert Offerman and Alexandra Manning, hands tied in a rare diamond knot, tortured, raped and beaten to death, were the first to die at the hands of a particular killer who takes his time...

- Has anyone ever heard that the infamous "diamond knot" was used on Manning? I have heard that her wrists were bound with twine, but have never heard any mention of the diamond knot being used. The details of this particular case are very conflicting. Was she raped or was she not raped. CCF says she was raped: "This time he enters the Goleta home of Doctor Robert Offerman. He rapes the Doctor's girlfriend, Alexandria Manning, before killing them both."

In the past, when it seemed that the consensus was that she wasn't raped, I have theorized that it was probably because Offerman tried to attack him and was shot and killed. LE states that they believe Offerman tried to attack the offender because Offerman's bindings were loose. On the other hand, maybe she was in the process of being raped when Offerman attacked. Scenario: ONS tied them up and gave them the song and dance about "I'm only looking for money, blah, blah, blah..." Then ONS proceeds to rape Manning which causes Offerman to react. Who knows what the real story is with all of the conflicting "facts". Does anyone know if Manning was found clothed?

It takes alot of confidence in a criminal to attack with no pants on. This guy was very confident that the cops would not be after him or the police dog would not be after him. I have never met a criminal who would want to be attacked by a police dog when wearing no pants. This guy was very confident that no plice dog was going to attack him while he wore no pants.



The question is why?





EAR always had a handgun and a knife so I think a dog would be the least of his worries. If I were EAR I would be more worried about cutting my legs or genitalia up on the fences. I guess EAR spent a lot of time naked (he was known to sun bathe) and got accustomed to it.


There are other criminals who choose to be naked. "General Butt Naked" is a famous warlord and cannibal from Africa who used to fight tribal wars with nothing but a pair of shoes and an AK-47.

During the winter months victims described EAR's legs as pale but during or after the summer months they were described as darker, the police memo I read said that this indicated he had a penchant for sun tanning during the summer season. Maybe EAR was in to naturism and heliotherapy. The Nazis were in to both of the aforementioned practices, and it was said that the ONS likely had an interest in "racial prejudicial groups." lol

It's easy to say that on the internet but most people who think about this case regularly get scared when they hear bumps in the night, even when the guy is probably dead or not killing anymore. Like that lady on THS investigates said, "we had a plan to get him but when he came in to our bedroom we just did what we were told".
That lady is said to have been a survivor of an EAR attack, does anyone know what victim number she was?

Picture of Security Badge left behind by EAR





I was just rereading Cromptons book and came across something I missed in my prior read through.

Its been said that EAR never left anything behind, by way of clues, to work with, what about the security badge in the front of a rape victims house?

Crompton says they contacted Bay Area security firms to match the badge without any luck (Perhaps because the rape was in Concord, which is considered Bay Area).

Once they determined it was the East Area Raptist, I wonder if anybody looked into Security Firms in Sac?

If you think about it, its the perfect job/cover to allow someone to be creeping around in the middle of the night with a flashlight. If they ignored thier duties, they would have all night (on "work" nights) to spy/terrorize/rape people? They would have to "be in the area" repeatedly on thier night shift security position. A security guard on the nightshift, maybe?

I think this is a valuable, perhaps, overlooked clue. Has anyone ever seen the picture of the badge? Have you ever heard anything about the badge?

Did the AFB's use or train Security personell (access to base to train or work)? Who hired the security personell on new housing projects in the victimized areas?? Golf courses?? Colleges?? Building projects in Sac 1976-78?

True. Good point. Perhaps looking at the list of CA state licensed security guards in 76 to 78, and seeing if any names jump out, or match names on other types of suspect lists, i.e., Mather AFB connected, sex offender, EAR file, etc.

Sacramento Security Companies In The 70's
I am aware of a security company that was owned and operated by a Sacramento family during the EAR crimes. The Bayer Security Company was in business and is still operating today. I am checking on some others that were here as well. g

Wilks: Actually, your thought could be right on the money concerning checking into New England areas. I know that many companies in Cali used that type of badge and the badge was sold nationally. However, what if the badge was a first issue type of deal or just sold in limited quantities for an initial release. A worn badge could mean several years old so thinking about that information; How long had those badges been in service; The New England angle is just an avenue but not one to dismiss lightly.

mentioned there was something about salesmen , could this be another clue? Maybe he was a salesman
Here is my logic:The crimes of EAR spanned a large chunk of the state and if you think about it some salesmen travel a lot (EAR also did).; being a salesmen could have also given this guy access to neighborhoods and homes, it could also have given him contact with potential unsuspecting victims. It also could be that he pretended to be a salesman for the company and having the badge was part of the ruse

Does anyone have any ideas on why the EAR threatened to kill Victim #5's husband? That is the case where the EAR said that he knew her husband was a Captain in the military. Being that the EAR's rage was directed against women, why would his threat be directed at her husband? This was his first Citrus Heights attack. Is that one possible reason that this victim was targeted?

If the EAR didn't know the victim's husband, what could he possibly have against him?

Presumably it was the EAR who called this victim before she became a victim and told her that he was going to kill her husband.

With the exception of threatening (by phone) to kill the victim whom he was talking to (during the only recording of the EAR's voice), this is the only other instance of the EAR doing this.

The question is why did he do it (if he didn't know her husband)?

And while on that subject, why did he call the other victim threatening to kill her (not victim #5 but the one that he was saying "gonna kill you" to.)? To my knowledge, she was the only victim that he threatened to kill (by phone) even though he had made perhaps hundreds of crank phone calls.

I think EAR was always evolving....,and this was just part of his behaviour it took for him to feel his" guilty thrill"..He may have had contact with this couple or witnessed them at the Officers Club...I think he needed to feel their fear..,his Excitement Craves...

If he threatened to kill victim #5's husband then that would not appear to be evolving to me because it was one of the earliest victims (that is if we are sure that on his many phone calls, he didn't threaten to kill except for twice.)


I read somewhere that LE believed he lived in Citrus Heights so that might be the reason they believed that.

Possibly he did know or come in contact with the husband in some capacity. Was he a neighbor? Was EAR/ONS or his father in the military? or did EAR/ONS have some job, maybe something like he pumped gas, and the Captain acted high and mighty with his impressive uniform and made EAR/ONS feel small? I think those observations are very astute Arch. That is an interesting clue.

Yes, the EAR called victim #5 and threatened to kill her husband WITHOUT threatening to kill Victim #5. He later raped her.

The infamous recording of the EAR/ONS threatening to kill was made to a different victim and was made after he had raped that victim. This is the only time that he did that so what was different in both cases that compelled him to want to kill those victims?

We know that on 5/17/77 when he threatened to kill his next two victims, the police did something that angered him. We just have yet to figure out what the police did to the EAR to set him off.

I feel that these are 3 very big clues to this offender's identity.

Which victim are you referring to in the last paragraph? The one that you have the recording of? What number was she? She is the only one he threatened to kill?

I believe that Det. Crompton says which victim she was. I forget right now but she was the only one that he threatened by phone to kill (months after he raped her). She was not Victim #5.

Challenging Russ Oase's Medical Theory...

I have been getting a lot of message on this subject so please let me make this clear. Why the challenge? I will tell you why. Russ in the above KCRA clip above says his theory that EAR worked in the medical field was based on the large number of people connected to hospitals or being patients etc.

Yet, if you read my earlier posting on this thread I have clearly proven that EAR did not preselect his victims. Pages and pages and pages in Sudden Terror prove this man was a prowling machine. If he preselected his victims due to EAR's medical background there would be no need to prowl. He would simply at night go to the house and commit his crime and slither back home.


It is rare that we get someone on TV that gives info about the EAR cases. And he blew it. Because I have just proven above that his theory is based on faulty logic. Russ is ex LE and he put himself in the spotlight by getting a rare opportunity to discuss the case. He should be held to a higher standard. Now potential witnesses will be incorrectly looking at pharmacy techs and other medical professionals, when the evidence shows the opposite. Russ' air time on TV is equivalent to the false sketch put out in 1977. It will bring in false leads and just be an enormous waste of time.

Let me preface this with a clear statement that this is just my opinion. It really does no good for us to fight amongst ourselves. Until there is an arrest or an identification of EAR there are many things we just don't have answers to. The great part about this case is we have DNA. In the end the DNA will be all that matters. Of course we will be curious and want all the details but DNA is the key.I, myself, have gone back and forth on many aspects of this case. In the beginning, it just depended on the day as to my opinion. I have spent years on this case and still changemy mind regularly about pieces of EAR that I'm uncertain about. I try to be open minded but at times I'm not. I find that when i just begin to believe something about EAR I learn additional information that sends me back to a previous thought or opinion. So I guess what I'm really trying to say is..all of our thoughts and opinions are based on the information at hand, the information we have at the Time. It does not make one of us right or wrong. There are many who feel there is a medical connection and many who don't. We won't be able to prove anything one way or another until EAR-is caught. G

I have no idea if Mr. Oase's theory is right or wrong, but I don't think that it is crazy or misguided. We will not know for sure what EAR's motives are until he is identified.
I do want to address the idea that Russ "blew it". This interview came about specifically from a discussion I had with Walt Gray where I familiarized him with the case (he was not a Northern California resident during the EAR era) and suggested that a good story may be how retired LE have continued to work the case. An unfortunate fact is that the "news" always tries to present something that is "new". This interview morphed into an emphasis toward the medical theory rather than just the retired LE angle that I suggested probably because KCRA editors felt that this was the freshest info. I think that we should be grateful that a quality media outlet in Sacramento was willing to do a story - any story - on a case that occured before probably half of its audience had been born. I just see the glass is half full and am happy to keep the case in the public's eye.

I don't think any aspect of a possible medical connection has been dis-proven! Not by a long shot!

EAR was strange. Did a lot of things that don't make logical sense.

He peeped/prowled for his own kicks, I believe, just as much as for selecting victims.

This guy possibly wore fake beards, carried around fake security badges, called victims years after he attacked them. He prowled and attacked and them came back and prowled the very same area!

Instilling fear, confusion and insane terror was just as important to him as his actual attacks.

if any of his victims were connected at all in any way, it would not surprise me in the least if he went out of his way to make it seem like they were all selected at random! In fact, we kinda know he did things like this.

I agree with you Eric David. While I also think Conquistador makes good points, I don't feel people should feel intimidated to disagree. LE knows more than has been released to the public. I feel Russel O. should be respected even if it turns out he is wrong in the end, afterall he is retired and devoting his own time to still work this case without pay. That is dedication and should be respected.

Your vehemence about the EAR not pre-selecting his victims is puzzling, given the amount of data that suggests there was some pre-selection. You claim to have read Sudden Terror, so do you not recall the many victims who received hang-up calls in the days and weeks leading up to their attacks? Victim #1 having felt she was being watched? The would-be victims who discovered ligatures hidden under their couch cushions? The victims whose homes were entered and/or burglarized well in advance of the attacks?

My own personal feeling is that rather than honing in on one victim, EAR preselected a handful of possibles within close proximity. Opportunity would come into play only when he was ready to strike; if preselected Victim A were unavailable, or circumstances were not ideal, he'd move onto preselected Victim B, two houses down. I think that's largely how he operated. Clearly, there were some impulsive attacks, but those represented a minority.

That the EAR had some connection to the medical field is just one theory of many that has bounced around for some time. Each is worth exploring. "Ski Mask Rapist" Jon Barry Simonis worked in the radiology unit of a hospital, and would gather information on victims from hospital records. It's plausible. There's no good reason to challenge or lambast Oase.

EAR preselected neighborhoods and then zoned in on the victims. SOE and I do not disagree on this point. Yes Jon Simonis a similar rapist to EAR ,worked in radiology. To my knowledge Jon Simonis did not walk on rooftops at night, use twine form the construction industry to tie his victims, strike near recent construction sites or attack in seasonal patterns. This idea that all ideas should be given equal weight does not make sense. That would be like me saying that since all victims drove cars that EAR was probably an auto mechanic. Can you disprove it? No. Should I go on TV with this idea and be immune from criticism just because it is my idea? I dont think so.

Instead of going on TV and trying to guess EAR's occupation lets focus on something we all can agree on. In all the places in Sacramento County why did EAR strike in Cordova Gardens first? Why did he start on Paseo Drive? Can we all agree that EAR was very familiar with this area and probably lived within a few miles? Should not the police focus their investigation there. We should not get sidetracked about Irivine or Goleta. It all began in Cordova Gardens. If someone goes on TV about the EAR case they should mention it all began there. The answer lies there.

I am questioning the conventional wisdom that posits that the EAR lived in Rancho Cordova at the time of his first attack. As you probably know, I believed this without question up until very recently. I was basing that belief off of a rather simplistic understanding of geographic profiling. My initial understanding is that when a serial offender is finally identified, it usually turns out that he lived within 5 miles of his first attack.

Further research into this theory revealed that it was true of only a certain type of serial offender, usually younger, but more importantly, disorganized, less intelligent, "marauder-type" offenders.

The EAR/ONS clearly was an intelligent, organized, "commuter-type" offender. According to the "experts" on geographic profiling (who introduced the terms "marauder" and "commuter"), the communter-type offender lived much further away from the areas in which he offended. Part of the reason that he would offend so far away from his "home-base" is so that he would not be recognized by anyone in the areas where he offended.

The other reason that I have questioned conventional wisdom is that most likely the 6/18/76 attack was not the EAR's first crime. It may have been his first 261 but it certainly was not his first 459. That is why it is so important to determine where his first crimes actually were because then I think the conventional wisdom would apply.

It is possible that the EAR/ONS at one time lived in Rancho Cordova (perhaps because his father was stationed at Mather). I do not currently believe that the EAR/ONS was living in Rancho Cordova at the time of the 6/18/76 attack.

The geographic profile indicates that he was living in either Carmichael or Citrus Heights. Prof. Rossmo is the father of geographic profiling. So, I would have to defer to his knowledge and experience. JJ did his own geographic profile that concurs with Rossmo's (for what it's worth).

Why was Cordova Gardens his first? Based on the available information, it was because she was the first victim to be "alone". He was waiting for those opportunities where his victims would be alone. 6/18/76 provided him with that opportunity. And apparently he had not been keeping up on her because she had been alone for over a month before he actually attacked her. If he lived in the immediate area, he would have known much earlier that she was alone.

I do feel that the EAR/ONS had lived in Rancho Cordova PRIOR to the 6/18/76 attack. He appeared to be "comfortable" (ie familiar) with only the Cordova Gardens area of Rancho Cordova (again indicating a Mather AFB connection). As far as I can tell, he didn't venture to much further beyond Cordova Gardens except in one or two incidents.

This is something that I thought long and hard about. I focused my attention to the Rancho Cordova area at the outset. My prime suspect came to my attention because of his centrality to the first EAR crimes as well as the Maggiore murders. Obviously, the original investigators focused on the Cordova Gardens area at the outset of the investigation. Recall that Shelby even believed that the EAR committed a 459-related dog beating in Rancho Cordova in 1974.

Ironically, that still may have been the EAR who then moved out of the Rancho Cordova area only to return two years later for his first 261. The thing that always confused me is that the EAR had 3 immediate comfort zones. Rancho Cordova provided him with the first opportunity to attack a victim while she was alone.

Look at where Jack Jessup (the Pillowcase/Woolly Rapist) chose to commit his first attack once he was paroled to West Sacramento. His first attack was nowhere near his West Sacramento address. Jessup was a commuter-type offender.

Essentially, I agree with you. The EAR's residence will be within 5 miles of his first crimes. I just do not think that 6/18/76 was his first crime. Only his first successful 261. I believe that he attempted other 261's and they just have not been connected to him because his M.O./Signature had not yet been firmly established.

Crompton says that the car stolen in the 9/4/76 Carmichael/Citrus Heights attack was located 1 mile from the scene. Does anyone know if that car was located to the south of that attack which might indicate EAR was heading back towards the Cordova Gardens area? The 10/18/76 stolen car attack was found on El Segundo.

Now that is a good question. Sudden Terror states that the car was found about a mile from the attack. Looking at the map I bet it was found near California Ave. and Fair Oaks Blvd. Guessting or Arch would most likely know for sure. Will they share this tid bit of information with the board?

just been looking over your site as i try to do as often as i can and noticed youve changed one or two things.this has probably been brought up but i must of missed the discussion.on the witnesses wanted section you have addded that the ear/ons was active as late as 1990/91.im still waiting for concrete evidence that he made the call.if he made the call at this time why is it so vaque??1990-91?it either happened in 90 or 91,which one is it?also if this actually happened even without a voice why would the investigators not come public and say this actually happened?it dosent make sense.i highly doubt anything ever happened after 86 that is concrete.

1990-91 Phone Call

MH,

The information about the phone call came from Insp. Shelby. So that information was made public. He provided that information working from memory. I have had the information confirmed. The details of the phone call are being kept confidential by investigators for their own reasons. All we can say for certain is that there is no physical evidence of the EAR/ONS committing 261's or 187's past 1986. However, I believe both the victim as well as Shelby about the phone call as it is consistent with what the EAR has done in the past.

The phone calls have no direct bearing on the investigation. We still do not know whether the EAR/ONS is dead, incarcerated or alive well. The 1990-91 phone call does not in any way clear any of that up. The 1982 phone call is more important because no one knows where the EAR/ONS was between Aug 1981 and April 1986. Apparently he was in the Sacramento area in 1982 in order that have made that phone call.

Because investigators would have been able to trace the call if it was a long distance call. Instead, it was a toll free call so it had to come from the Sacramento area.

It's interesting how I connected 'X' on 13th March 2007. It's interesting that in my memory 'X' fit all the criteria mentioned on the two 'main' sights. Still more intriguing that after a cursory search that 'X' resides and has resided in Sacramento at least since the early 90s, and has a child born around 85 or 86 . . . Interesting how I can connect 'X' (at least in my mind) with ear-ons . . . It's maddening since I have had absolutely '0' contact with 'X' since 1975 when he left home for the Navy and California. Interesting how after further research and digging that I know exactly since 09 where 'X' resides in Sacramento and under what conditions he arrived and his girlfriend's name. Interesting that I can find 'X's' Jr. on MS . . . and am rebuffed in my attempts to connect with him, how his octogenarian, Polish/German mother claims(2006-2007)to have no knowledge of 'X's' whereabouts other than that he is in California . . . interesting. I have contacted everyone that I could who is 'someone' connected with this very intriguing case . . . I mean, I am going mad!

The only thing that would convince investigators is a matching DNA profile. Other than that, you are in a long line of people with a suspect in the case with lots of circumstantial connections (including myself). The proof is in the DNA.

What was confirmed was that a victim received a phone call that she believed was from the EAR/ONS in 1990-91. (Apparently, 1991 according to Pool). We can debate whether we believe that the call came from the EAR/ONS but there was a corresponding police report which officially documents that the call was made. It is consistent with what the EAR/ONS has done in the past so it would come as no surprise if it was, in fact, the EAR/ONS. It also could have been a crank call but few people in 1990-91 were even aware that the EAR was calling his victims and even fewer were aware of what he would typically say.

The post-1986 phone calls are only curiosities. They in no way "prove" that the EAR/ONS was dead, incarcerated or alive and well as the only "proof" we have of the EAR/ONS being alive is his DNA being left behind at a crime scene on May 5th, 1986.

Theoretically, the EAR/ONS could have died on May 6th, 1986. Or he could have been arrested May 6th, 1986. Or he could have resumed whatever lifestyle he was living at the time. The phone calls in no way illuminate or change our understanding of the case in any significant way. If he called long distance and there was a way to trace the call, that would be significant.

The post-1986 phone calls are, unfortunately, case trivia.

forgive my my ignorance but there are only 2 calls i know of.one is the very dubious 90-91 call and the other is the recorded 1978 call.you mention the 1982 call based in sacramento.can you tell me more about this call as i have no info on this at all??very interesting if it is proven btw hope you had a great christmas and hopefully a great 2013!

I would recommend purchasing an ebook copy of "Sudden Terror" (PDF version). That way, you can do a search using "phone call" as the search criteria. It will bring up all of the instances where the EAR made a phone call to his victims. The instances of "hang up" phone calls and crank phone calls are too numerous for me to post here.

Can anyone tell me...?

I have a question about what is often referred to as "the Ninja composite." Does anyone know --- does that composite come from the young girl's hypnosis (I believe she was 13 but I could be wrong) --- this would be the girl who described the bull tattoo --- or is the Ninja composite from another victim/witness?

Some people seem to think it's from a 10 year old boy's account?

Apppreciate anyone who could shed light on that. It's interesting to me because if it's not from the hypnosis girl but another eyewitness then that's two people who recall a tattoo on the forearm. In the Ninja composite it appears to me less like a bull and more like a dog (German shepherd?).

The description was provided by the 6 year old daughter of the first Stockton attack(see p.276 Sudden Terror). Even prior to hypnosis the daughter gave a detailed descripture of the t- shirt, watch, knife belt and belt buckle. The tattoo information came from hypnosis. I agree with you that it looks more like a dog than the Schlitz bull. It looks to me like the Marine Corps mascot bulldog Chesty.


There are two notable aspects to the tattoo. Ear ONS wore long sleeve shirts, windbreakers and jackets in almost all of his other attacks. If he really had a tattoo in 1977, that would place him in a very small minority of men, almost certainly a veteran with either a Marine or Navy background. There were no mainstream tattoos. I worked with soldiers coming back from Vietnam at a college during this time period (71-76) and virtually none had tattoos except for a handful of Marines or Navy who had served in the South Pacific.

I also believe the unique belt buckle was made by Bergamot Brassworks.

My Theories

Hello all. I am new to this board. I remember coming across the EAR/ONS website a few years ago and it having an impact upon me and then I forgot about the case. I read the LA Mag article last week and read Sudden Terror this weekend. Frankly this guy has gotten under my skin and I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this case. For a long time I’ve lived under the assumption that I would hear anyone trying to get inside my house in the middle of night. That I would wake up and react accordingly and keep my family safe. No longer. The past couple of nights, I’ve awoken at 4:00 am and lay awake listening for strange sounds in the house. This is not normal behavior for me.

Because of this, I need to get a little personal closure and get my thoughts out on a public forum. I’m sure they are not original thoughts are will probably be duplicative of others. If I’ve stolen your pet theory and not acknowledged it, I apologize. Feel free to point out below if I have done so. I thank you in advance for allowing me to post this.

A little about me: I currently work in the law enforcement field. I don’t claim to bring any real expertise, however, as I have never dealt with a case even remotely resembling EAR/ONS. However, I am familiar with modern law enforcement techniques, some of which sadly appear to have been developed after EAR/ONS disappeared. This is not meant to criticize the investigators who worked on the case. No doubt they gave their heart and souls in what was ultimately a fruitless endeavor. In fact, at the very least, it seems that we have learned from their mistakes. I am confident that it would be next to impossible for EAR/ONS (or similar criminal) to operate in the same way today as he did back then. Or at least not operate anywhere near as profligately.

With that in mind here are my observations:

1. The most striking feature of this case is this guy’s ability to get inside houses undetected. In fact, it’s astonishing. And frightening. He achieved a level of skill in his chosen discipline (burglary) that rivals the level of skill exhibited by athletes or other professionals operating at the top of their profession. (Think triple crown winning hitters or MVP winning quarterbacks.) I’m certain that June 18, 1976 was not the first time he broke into a house. He had to have had a LOT of burglary practice before he began his raping spree. And not just burglary practice but silent burglary practice. It’s one thing to kick in a back door when no one is home. It’s another to get inside a house silently and unobserved. He was able to detect and exploit individual vulnerabilities particular to each house with ease. More on this below.

2. During the height of his sprees, this guy had to have spent a LOT of time prowling. I figure at least 2 nights prowling for every deliberate attack and probably closer to 3 or 4 nights prowling for every deliberate attack. (1 or 2 nights finding a target and 1 or 2 nights observing that particular target.) In fact at times, he had to have been out EVERY SINGLE night. (See 10/76, 2-3/77, 5/77, etc.) Because of this I think it unlikely that he led a normal family life or even had a normal relationship with a female. In fact I’ve come to the conclusion that at least for the second half of 1976, all of 1977 (except the summer) and all of 1978, Prowling, burglarizing, and raping WAS his job. He took just enough money and jewelry to sustain himself. He seems to eat every time he’s in a victim’s home. Why? Because he’s hungry. With the amount he was out at night, I don’t think he could have held a regular daytime job. At least not with any consistency. I think that he’s out every night, from maybe a couple of hours after dusk until just before dawn. He goes home and sleeps during the morning. He spends his afternoon doing daytime scouting (probably from a vehicle). Because of all this I think he was the ultimate loner. He lived in the cheapest apartment he could find. When he was short of cash to pay rent he may have done day labor. Or more likely, he did straight burglaries in which he took things of value. He would pawn these valuables in cities other than Sacramento. These burglaries would have looked “normal” and would not have been connected to EAR/ONS. One other possibility is that he lived with his mother (as many have suspected.) If so, he probably told her that he had a night time job. She was probably all too trusting (or deliberately ignorant) and believed his story. Unlike a wife, for example, she wouldn’t have demanded to see a paycheck. This whole equation probably changed by the time he started killing in SOCAL. His family, occupation, and living situation was probably different by late 1979. See below.

3. Many have speculated that he was in the military. I spent several years in military before going into my current profession, and I can tell you that during the height of his spree, there is no way he was on active duty. No simple way. If he was on active duty in June 1976 he was kicked out shortly thereafter. No way he could have lived the lifestyle I described above in paragraph 2 and been on active duty. Just not compatible. However, it is possible he spent some time in the military prior to June 1976. Or was in the reserves.

4. His attacks seem to fall into two broad categories that I label pre-planned (or deliberate) and targets of opportunities.

5. Deliberate attacks. This was EAR’s bread and butter. He scouts a neighborhood ahead of time. Both at day and at night. He finds particular houses and victims he’s interested in. He scouts those locations both inside and out. He attacks. At first he targeted females alone. Later he targets couples. Many have been puzzled by his habit of leaving gates open. I think this was his way of marking a neighborhood. At night in the dark the houses and yards tend to run together. So when he is interested in a particular house he leaves a gate open. When he drives through the neighborhood the next day he can see exactly where he had been the night before. This isn’t a foolproof method, however, as an observant homeowner might close the gate the next morning before EAR had a chance to drive through the neighborhood. We know that EAR probably hit the wrong house on at least one occasion. A lot of times, a couple of weeks will pass between when EAR identifies a potential target on a scout and when he focuses in on the target to plan for attack. What follows is a speculative timeline of a typical EAR deliberate attack: Day one: EAR is prowling a neighborhood. In all likelihood he is focusing his prowl on a particular target that he will hit in a couple of days. During the prowl, he identifies another potential target. He leaves the gate open on this new potential target. Day 2: he drives through the neighborhood and sees the open gate. Gets the address. Looks up the phone number for the house. Days 3-10 or so: starts making hang up phone calls. He uses this method to identify the number and kind of people living in the house. Whether a younger female of his liking lives there. He establishes who was in the house and when. Also during this timeframe he may pass the house on his nightly prowl, but isn’t particularly focused at first. By Day 11 or so, knowing more about who lives there he begins to focus his prowl on this target house. He identifies points of entry and what is locked or unlocked. He probably enters the home when no one is there, looking for weapons, staging ligatures, etc. By day 14 or so he is ready for the attack. With all this going on, EAR is no doubt stalking several homes at once. They are all in different stages of his cycle. I feel that he divided his nightly prowls into focused scouting of upcoming targets, and more general prowls for new targets. With all this going on he’d had to have kept copious notes to keep things straight. By the, end he probably had several notebooks full. Today he’d probably use a computer, but back then it had to have been by hand.

6. Targets of opportunity: I believe that EAR’s real turn on was teenage girls. It appears that the only time he broke his script to attack was when he saw a young girl and couldn’t resist. He’s out on a nightly prowl and sees a teenager playing piano. Or carrying clothes to her car. He couldn’t resist. Janelle Cruz probably fit into this category.

7. I feel strongly that EAR’s name came up at some point in the investigation. Reading ST is painful because the original investigators seemed way too willing to rely on their “gut”. They were too willing to eliminate suspects based off nothing but their gut, and not more scientific methods. I’m also troubled by how investigators would eliminate a suspect simply because he was slightly outside the accepted profile. When it comes to heights and weights witnesses are invariably unreliable. I would expect them to be almost completely unreliable in the EAR case, because the victims were all under extreme stress and they all saw him shortly after being woken up in the dark. Those conditions don’t make for reliable observation. So I think it’s entirely possible that the EAR may have been a little larger than most think. Was he 6-5? No. But he could have been 6-0 or even 6-1. I definitely wouldn’t eliminate someone simply because he fell a little outside the common EAR height/weight profile. Please don’t take this as a criticism of the original investigators. Back in those days before the advent of many of our modern tools, cops had little else to rely on than their gut. Tragic.

8. To me the most compelling thing that makes me think that EAR was the VR is the fact that I mentioned above—EAR had to have a LOT of time to practice his burglary skills. The shear volume of burglaries in the VR case lends itself to this pattern. The most troublesome thing about the VR case is the round face composite. This sketch, to me, looks nothing like the later EAR/Maggiore sketches. If it is the same guy, one possible explanation: shortly after the Mcgowan incident he enters the military and goes to boot camp, a place that can lend itself to rapid weight loss. If he made it through, he didn’t make it very far past boot camp and by June 1976 he was out of the military.

9. One possible avenue of investigation is EAR’s access to a seeming large variety of cars. He may have been associated with a used car lot in some way. He also may have frequently traded in.

10. So what happened to EAR? I think the most likely possibility is that he killed invading someone’s home. He may have moved on to new turf, even a new state, when this happened and therefore it was never connected to EAR. The shear volume of burglaries this guy made means that sooner or later his luck was bound to run out. Unfortunately for many victims, it was later. But one night this guy chose the wrong house and ran into a homeowner who was armed, awake, and prepared. Good night. The case was open and shut for the cops and therefore was soon forgotten. A second possibility is that he was caught while attempting one of his crimes in another jurisdiction/state and went to prison for a number of years. By the time he emerged he changed his MO (everyone seems to agree on his intelligence) and continued his killing. Another possibility is that his family circumstance changed and this caused his level of activity to drop off. A married man couldn’t spend as much time out at night. Or at least be married for very long. I don’t think this scenario is likely however. If he did get married, he continued his career but maybe changed his MO and none of his later crimes have been connected. (he no longer left DNA behind in obvious manners). A good example of this is Denis Rader, who deliberately changed his MO later in life. EAR also probably stopped hitting couples as he aged. Denis Rader talked about having to be more careful when he got older because he wouldn’t be able to handle a male victim who fought. Of EAR’s last 9 attacks he appears to have lost control of the male in 4 of them. Danville/Goleta 1/Offerman/Sanchez. 2 of the others were female only attacks. Perhaps he was older than most thought and was already losing his game. Another factor is that the astonishing skill at burglarizing I discussed in paragraph 1 above is a perishable skill. Meaning that if he’s not out regularly practicing it, his skill level will decline. That may be why was caught or killed sometime after 1986.

11. So to sum up my confused rambling in the above paragraph what I think happened to EAR in descending order of probability:

a. He was killed attempting a break in. This was probably in a different state (I would look to the NW first, as EAR definitely likes foliage, at least judging by the pictures of the neighborhoods he frequented). He was probably killed because he got unlucky and his burglary skills were degraded.

b. Same as above, except he was caught and imprisoned.

c. His life circumstances changed and his crimes diminished after first changing his MO. He is probably still offending somewhere, but under a different MO and on a much reduced basis. (years between attacks)





Well that’s it. Thank you for allowing me to post this. I feel confidant I’ll be able to sleep better tonight.

Good Post

You summed up the thinking of a lot of people on this board and did it very well. Not only that but you must like to type. You've applied your LE experience to reading about EAR and his history and your analaysis of why he wasn't caught is probably spot on. People forget that there weren't any personal computers or cell phones or serious video survellance. And here's my point, EAR knew all this stuff, he knew what the police could and couldn't do. I'd be really surprised (and at my age I seldom am) if he wasn't questioned or at least the subject of an FI report. I remember what a Stockton policewoman told my wife after the office complex where she worked was robbed sometime after the second EAR attack in Stockton. "Don't plan on us catching this guy" He knew exactly what he had to do to outwit the cops and his potential victims. Outwitting the victims being as big a part of whatever drove him as outwitting the police. You could sense their (the police) frustration in the interviews they gave the Sacramento press. The Sac Sheriffs for one were openly hoping that someone would blow this guy up.

What makes you think Cruz wasn't his last victim?He was still making phone calls in the early 90s wasn't he?We have no known EAR crimes from 81-86, a murder in 86, another five year gap and then the phone calls in the early 90s.That has EAR committing one known home invasion between 1981 and 1991, so IMO he was no longer breaking and entering, and thus no longer in a position to be shot by a homeowner.

Sleeping at night

Moonlighter- Thanks for a very insightful and well formulated post. I smiled at the part about waking up at 4:00am. When I first read about this case I would wake up at 3:00 am like clockwork because my husband insists we sleep with our patio door open, even in winter. Fortunately, the wake up went away as I delved more deeply into the case.


I do believe he could have offended elsewhere and I am always looking for that. Sadly, there are so many thousands of unsolved cases. There was a rapist in Arizona , if I recall, named the Red Rooster or Red Robin rapist, with a similar MO but his last young victim shot and killed him.

GSK might also have killed himself as the FDLE suggested.

Colonel Russell Williams AKA Kinky Colonel forever altered my perception about who has time to hot prowl every night. He managed to command a military base of 7,000 airmen while still prowling, raping and murdering.

I do think, considering the time period 1974-79, if he had previously been in the military, in Sac he could have been a student on the GI bill.

So they actually suffer. Betttendorf, who worked the RedBaron case for nine months."Their reactions differed from whatever the average rape victim's is in that he added 'some type of dimension— I don't know what it was he added, exactly — but it's something you see in some rape cases and you don't see it in others." He added it in every single case, this terror that he was going to come back. Most rapists do say, 'If you tell anybody, I'm going to come back and get you. 'Almost all of them say that as they're leaving. But they're not believed in many cases."In his cases, all of his victims believed it."

Here are some revealing comments made by RedBaron victims during police interviews:—

"She could think of no one who knew that at this time she was separated from her husband and would be alone in the evenings."—
"The suspect asked her if she wanted a drink and she replied that she didn't drink. He told her that that wasn't true, that she drank a little. . . In attempting to determine how the suspect would know this, the victim stated that she had no idea."—
"He told her he had been watching her and waiting for this for a long time."—"He asked her, 'Where'syour dog?' This surprised her a great deal and she replied that she had to get rid of it."

This was part of the fear. Most of his victims knew little about the Red Baron, but he seemed to know so much about them — things it seems he could have known only if he had been observing the women for a long time. In some cases, he apparently did, investigators believe. But he also would rummage through drawers, purses and medicine cabinets before waking a sleeping woman — and he may have noticed details like a doghouse without an occupant.A smart man can learn a lot from a woman's purse —and no one claims the RedBaron was stupid. A cunning animal, Tucson Police ChiefWilliam J. Gilkinson calls him. •Reyna and Hacker worked on the rape cases along with their other duties until earlyJuly, 1971. By then, the PimaCounty sheriff also had a man, Joe Woolridge, assignedpart-time to the RedBaron case. Woolridge, nowa sergeant, was one of three men in the sand robberies in the county.

By that time, investigators had learned many of the RedBaron's methods and quirks.They didn't have to question a new victim for long to be sure in their minds that he had been there. He would say much the same thing, wear the same or similar clothes and stocking mask, make similar threats. He liked to unscrew porch lights before slipping into their homes. He was an excellent burglar, investigators agree.

Often, he'd use a victim's own kitchen knife to threaten her, her own clothing to gag her. During his attack or attacks, he would bite the woman on the neck,shoulders or breasts, often choking her at the same time. Frequently he would drink beverages from her refrigerator. Never alcohol,though.

The investigators' most consistent clue, the one that tied the Red Baron to the cases, was his shoes. White tennis shoes with black "racing stripes" on the sides, some victims said. They left distinctive, herringbone footprints that investigators soon learned to look for when they arrived at a rape scene. Because he often prowled an area for a long time before striking, they frequently found many prints — all of the same shoe, all with, his characteristic long stride.In late June, 1971, a woman was raped at an apartment complex on the city's fringe but outside the city limits. A few nights later, sheriff'sofficers were called by a young woman living next door to her. She had heard noises and was frightened."We found footprints by her window," Woolridge remembers. "We raked them out and swept them with a broom and wet that down real good . . . and, lo and behold, that next night those footprints were back again."So we checked it for about two or three nights, but we didn't find anything. She heard another noise and we went back and the foolprints were back there again."Woolridge asked for four men and an unmarked patrolcar to stake out the area from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next night."The county just wouldn't pay the overtime, wouldn't give us the money for it. Woolridge's one consolation was that she was able to tell more about him than any other victim. She had awakened as a man was putting his gloved hand over her mouth and a knife to her neck, telling her to keep quiet. Michelle McNamara just gave an interview where she said they suspected him of calling a victim as late as 2001 (or 2002?). I don't know if that was an error or what. I wonder which one it was and what he said that convinced them it was him. Unfortunately, she did not go into that.

Well done, moonlighter. Are you a detective? What is your job in the field?

#6. The woman he caught with the laundry was 28 or 29, not a teenager. Maybe he hit many of the teenagers out of sheer opportunity, but that would mean that he spent more time planning to attack the adult women. If so, the adult women would be his real targets and the ones he was more aroused by. His arousal wasn't based on sex, but sex with violence. He was more violent with the adults, and so more aroused. He also picked adult women as his victims marked for murder, which again heightened his arousal, having kicked it up from rape to now rape and murder. Any old pedo who watches barely legal porn would suspect he was after the girls and be wrong, because they were looking at it from their perspective and not his, which is much different. I think he hated them all but he really hated the adult women more.

I also think he was able to stop his killing for a while after Domingo. From what is said in the LAmag article, she really enraged him and he struck her harder and more than the other female victims. I see on the forum that Smith and sometimes Harrington were thought to be his perfect crimes. But I don't really know what that means because he went on to kill Manuella Witthun and then Sanchez & Domingo afterwards. It may be that his aim was not perfection, but in reaching the biggest high. That he let himself overkill her (he also may have tied her in a more aggressive bondage position than any of his victims), would seem to me that he got the biggest sexual thrill from it, having upped the violence and degradation of the other murder victims. She was also nearly 40. Maybe she reminded him most of his mother, especially when she told him to take it easy, and that's what triggered it: her age along with her admonishment.

Also Sanchez got farther than any other man did, in trying to take the EARONS down. Maybe that was his Danny Glover moment where he thought he was getting to old for this *.



The highlighted part about the Red Baron proves the point that I made in another thread, and that is, that certain criminals have a certain mind set about things. It's not surprising that the Red Baron's behavior is like, or close to, the EARONS'. Did he actually wear a WWI pilot's hat?

Oh, and that athetic shoes were still informally called sneakers or tennis shoes back then. The shoe boom didn't happen until the mid 80s. Now there are too many styles and brand names to count, but back then there were only a few to choose from.



I've always slept peacefully. The only thing it did, is reinforce the idea that I would never live in a house with an attached garage or a sliding door.

Very well thought out theory. You seem to have a good grasp of this case.

Except for point number 8 (that doughboy sketch is a dealbreaker for me, among other things), your theory isn't that much different from my own.

It's striking to me how all of us can review this case, digest it, and come up with one or two points that really stand out. Yet what stands out for person A will be different than what stands out for person B, C, D, etc. Your point number 1 is something that made quite an impression on you. Yet, it's something I hadn't really considered before. So I appreciate getting your perspective, regarding the significance of EAR's "silent burglary" skill. Do you credit your experience in LE with seeing the significance of this skill, or from some other source? Aside from what you express in your theory, can you share with us any other insights about the guy that results directly from his extraordinary skill at "silent burglary"? In other words, what else does this highly developed skill tell us about him, in your opinion?

Also, point number 7 is something that hsan't really been discussed on this board a whole lot. Would like to see more discussion of it. I too think LE probably did come across the EAR at least once; yet for dubious reasons, dismissed him.

Applauding- Here is how the Red Baron got his name.


"Tucson police also were looking for another multiple rapist who operated in a different area and whose methods were different. As part of their investigation, a large map of the city was tacked up with colored pins showing where each assault occurred.

To separate the two rapists .police used blue and red pins, because that's all they could find.Somewhere along the line, someone walked up to the board, noticed that the red pins far outnumbered the blue ones and asked what was going on with the Red Baron.The name stuck. So did the red pins. For a long time."

I'm glad the GSK now has a more manageable moniker.

What Bothers Me
Is EAR getting away with attacking 15 times in the area policed by the Sac Sheriffs. And one of the incidents recounted in Sudden Terror I think. One of the investigators had a suspect he wanted to go further investigating, his boss told him definitively that his suspect wasn't EAR and ordered him to "drop it" Why?

Thank you. For a moment I thought you were going to say they named the blue pin man Snoopy.

Also to finish up the thought on why he he attacked the young girls more impulsively, I think it was because they gave him less trouble. Did any of them even scream? The most trouble I remember them giving is one tried to run out of the room and another one wouldnt turn over for him. The last girl he attacked, he did so in a home where her parents were sleeping. But mostly he was out to dominate the adult women. He treated them worse, he terrorized them more intensely, and that’s what really turned him on. I think even in the book they mentioned that the woman with the laundry who he knocked unconscious andbroke her nose, that that might have been the first time that he went through every kind of sexual act on a victim, and came to climax multiple times. She was nearly 30, so closer to the age of the woman who escaped him just prior to this attack. And closer to the ages of his murder victims. Except Janelle.

It’s odd but I haven’t really thought about Janelle as a girl, but more of an adult. She was 18 years old, and the others were 16 years old and under, if I am not mistaken. In reality, she was just a child, but for some reason I thought she had gone through a lot of sad experiences in her life and seemed more mature. I do not think she was attacked impulsively. As has been said recently, she lived next to a park, she had those huge slanted, square hedges next to her house. On Dark Minds, I think they said her home was lit up like a fishbowl from those hedges, and he had time to watch her for multiple nights to see she was alone. I think maybe the need for him to attack was high, but that he still did some watching before he picked a victim, for his own sake, if he hadn’t been doing this since 1981.



Leaving the gates open as a marker, as a way to find himself to a home at night is interesting. I don't know how well that would work, though. Like you said, I would think most people would notice if their gate was open the next morning and then close it., especially if thay had a dog that they let out, or young kids, wihich a lot of them did.
I think it was rare that he hit the wrong house out of confusion. I think he did enough note taking to find his way to one or more houses a night. Because he was so concerned with his escape route. He had to know that the house that he hit was going to have the particular escape route or routes he preferred.

You mention that you think he was pawning things to live on. It seems logical. But if you’re in LE or criminal justice education, you know that a lot of rapists aren’t focused on stealing when the whole purpose of the attack is to rape. In his case, terrorize. Which is why some people think he only took some money, and not a big sum when he could have. When he left expensive jewelry and took costume jewelry, etc.
Even though diamonds rings depreciate in value, gold and platinum do not. So you would think he stole the rings to live on. But he supposedly threw one ring away after it took a lot for the woman to take them off her swollen fingers. It seems like he was taking them off of them women to degrade and humiliate them, as wel as to show them he owned them, now. I didn’t recall him taking the husband’s rings, and those would have been precious metals. He took a husband’s ring once, that I recall. That husband instinctively had tried to get out of bed and attack him when he was roused from sleeping, and he had hit him with his gun several times after that, because that had made him mad.

If he did pawn some of the rings, LE should have scoured every pawn shop in the area and well beyond it. Did they? They should have also showed up to interrogate the fencers that they knew about or who had been out of jail at these times. Did they?
LE should have also had a reliable photocopy and description of the wedding rings that were taken. Most couples have at least one wedding photo taken close up of their hands wearnig the wedding rings that joined their union and also for insurance purposes, in case they are stolen. So LE should have these in their files, and should also have left copies with pawn shops to contact them if someone brought in the rings.

There is so much shoddy or badly retold LE work in the book, that it is very frustrating; I agree with you! I bet you could catagorzie the amount of things not followed through or followed through incorrectly, and it would be longer than the 3-part list of things you wrote in your OP.

Wasn't it the "Walter" character that a detective was told to stop going after? I can't remember why, though.

Wasn't it the "Walter" character that a detective was told to stop going after? I can't remember why, though.
F1 and Applauding- i wish i could post the full series on the Red Baron here, but it is 4 page PDF series that covered 4 full pages of newsprint. He was able to elude the police because he was watching them as much as he was watching his victims. For example: A police shift ended at 5:00, with the new surveillance crew arriving at 6:00am. So he attacked shortly after 5:00 and was gone before the next shift even hit the streets.

He had to have known some things about how the police were going about looking for him. I bet he took some time to wander or drive around and observe them setting up traps and such, too. He seems to have had a lot of time just to watch the police as much as the victims. So one night might be him just observing police, and another, the women. Sounds very plausible to me. What do you think, moonlighter?

Round Face

How a SKI MASK Affects Comps



Drifter- i have come to the conclusion that the only comps that would matter in this case would come from sightings in Goleta prior to Domingo Sanchez. Note the futility of the Red Baron Comps. We have Round Face on the right and Triangleon the left.

Applauding- I hope Moonlighter responds. During the height of the Visalia Ransackings a police radio was stolen out of a surveillance van. Nightdriver always believed that the GSK was following police activity and possibly the amateur CB Patrol groups activities. I think, though, a prowler would have to have nerves of steel to elude some of these dragnets.. . . on a roof top, tree??

I wonder how many attacks EAR aborted because he became aware that the intended victim was alert and being careful. For example checking every window and door every night. This guy had to be able to depend on people getting sloppy. On not thinking they could be a victim for whatever reason. Or a neighborhood not looking out for each other. Reality was as one of the police officers in our neighborhood said the best you can do is make an intruder break something to get in. If they are willing to do that they are in.

The aborted Queen Ann Lane attack deserves extra attention. I am interested in the preparation period leading up to it (7/5/79 - 10/1/79).

Why do I think the Queen Ann Lane attack is important? It was the first (attempted) murder where the EAR entered a property with the intent to kill the victims. It is not of critical importance whether EAR killed the Maggiores or Professor Claude Snelling. They were not planned or 'thrill kills'. The Queen Ann Lane attack is the first planned killing where the EAR entered a property with the intent to kill and I believe it is of critical importance for that reason.

I would like to ask other posters to reflect on this: What happened between July 5 1979 and October 1 1979 to turn EAR into ONS, a rapist into a murderer? EAR was responsible for dozens of rapes by this time so why NOW does he decide to kill?

I believe something has happened that:
Made him Relocate to SoCal
Acquire a pet dog
Kill his victims

... All at the same time. They are unlikely to be coincidental.

I have been wondering if this possible "event" that occured between 7/5/79 and 10/1/79 was the death of his mother?

Suddenly alone, did the EAR acquire the pet dog for company ... to replace her?

Was he now able to kill because his mother was not fretting about the crimes being reported on TV anymore? (He told one victim his mother got upset when his crimes where reported on TV.)

I have been looking into the murder a prostitute that happened in SoCal in this EAR-to-ONS "transition" period (7/5 - 10/1). The woman has the right first name and her surname is very similar to a POI surname from Sudden Terror.

But I have run out of road because I don't have a way to determine if she had a son. If she was childless, obviously, I could eliminate her. Background check websites have not helped even when searching by her SSN.

I can't help but think the three things I mentioned above (relocation, dog, murderer) happened at the same time for a reason.

What happened to turn him into a murderer?

Dog Incidents

I no longer feel comfortable providing any personal details on this board. (I am sure that you understand). So I will speak in the abstract. There were two incidents that I am aware of where dogs reacted abnormally at the presence of a prowler (presumed to be the EAR). This means that the dogs under normal circumstances would bark and instead, in the presence of the prowler, would cower. Det. Crompton's book, "Sudden Terror" mentions some additional incidents where dogs would not bark.


I know of two incidents where a prowler (presumed to be the EAR) showed absolutely no fear whatsoever in the presence of attack dogs trying to lunge through a window. We know of the dog beatings in Sacramento and Goleta and the dog stabbing (again presumed to have been committed by the EAR).

I have heard rumors where the EAR would poison dogs, and we can imagine that someone as cunning as the EAR would befriend dogs. What we can assume about the EAR regarding the German Shepherd is that he would not knowingly take an animal to a crime scene that could be easily tracked back to him. So far, that has proven to be the case.

What Dogs?

Maybe I'm missing something. I thought that the EAR was known to avoid dogs. In one attack there was a puppy, and in another there was a older dog. He is believed to have killed two poodles one in Rancho and one in Goleta. He may of stabbed a dog that ran up to him in Goleta. In one Sacramento attack a small dog came after him barking and he retreated briefly before regrouping and ignoring the dog. In Organvale two dogs barked at him as they wrere let out the front door. He apparantly took the same three toed dog to two different murders. Other than the dog that he apparantly brought with him what makes you think he could control dogs in some kind of special way? Seriously please explain. I think I missed some piece of information along the way. From what I have read most of the dogs except the puppy and the older dog, alerted and barked at him as one would expect.

I am only providing anecdotal incidents. I cannot explain the reaction of the dogs. That is the point. In each case, the dogs reacted out of the norm. Never acted like that before or since the incidents in question. Someone on here mentioned bear urine (or something to that effect). I have no idea. I know that dog handlers from Mather AFB were being looked at because of these anomalies.

I really am beginning to wonder what are we all dealing with here. I do not mean that as a slight on our efforts, but this individual is a complete and utter paradox as he progressed in his crimes. I think we really, really need to go back to the original 8 EAR crimes to get a hold on this person, and if possible dig up "bizarre" burglaries / break ins prior to 1976 in Rancho Cordova. Ignore Visalia for the time being and concentrate on RC. 1970 - 1976 robberies / burglaries in this time frame should give us a picture / trail.

Just to add......The Kennel Master of the 320th was murdered at a Sacramento gas station while being robbed. To my knowledge, it is still unsolved.

Just to add to your post, there was a 320th dog handler who was looked at in the Maggiore murders. He had some interesting things to say about the drug trafficking at Mather. The German Shepherd at Goleta 2 and 3 have brought renewed interest to any dog handler's at Mather.

I am sure that you will understand that because there is no way in which to determine why the animals reacted the way that they did there is little point in going into detail. I would have to dredge up print outs from the old discussion board.

What is still relevant is the bloodhound reactions to the EAR's scent. In "Sudden Terror" the dogs reacted strongly to the EAR's scent (according to the dog handlers) because he either had a physical problem or a drug problem.

The drug problem is obvious. I would like to know specifically what physical problem the dogs would react to.

In "Sudden Terror" (I think) the behavior of one of the bloodhound was describe as untypical. Someone postulated that it may have been a response to an illness or use of some drugs. Dogs are very sensitive to the odors humans give off. Some people think they know when people have a serious health problem.For example Cancer. Their noses are typically 10,000 times more sensitive than yours and mine. My Lab would rather hunt the ground where other dogs have been than almost anything. I posted a comment about taking the bloodhound out to Sunrise Mall or along to suspect interviews. It may have sounded humorous but I was dead serious. Again, LE didn't use all the tools in their toolbox.

Interesting read. With regards to the EAR, I would start with the obvious -- that being drugs. We know on different occasions, he has taken drugs from his victims. I also wonder if the bloodhounds can detect alcohol in someone's system? (I am assuming that they can). The EAR has also helped himself to beer taken from the victims in a few cases.

The less obvious, but mentioned in previous posts, was diabetes (and the EAR's need to eat while at his victim's homes). Drug trafficking continues to rear it's head in this investigation, so that is where I am looking with respect to the tracking dog's reactions.

Just curious, does anyone know what bear urine smells like? I would figure it would be pretty strong and thus detectable by the victims.

"The Night the Maggoires Died"--as written to me

"I just recently hard about the EAR/ONS and have been reading up on the crimes. I was just born in 75 and EAR started his raping in 76, my parents moved to Ranch Cordova in 76ish over off of McGregor Dr and Folsom Blvd. I called my mom last night and asked if she know anything about EAR or story’s of that time. She filed me in a lot about how the residence of the area where scared and panicked. Well in talking with my mom she brought up the Maggiores ( I didn’t mention anything to her that I have read their story), and she proceeded to inform me that my Grandmother at the time was head night nurse at Mather AFB hospital when this incident occurred, and that the Maggiores where taken to the Mather Hospital that night. With out going into to much detail, my mom told me that Brian was brought in DOA, but Katie was still alive muttering to my grandmother where is my husband, while she passed in my grandmothers hands.

I have tried explaining to my mother that this crime was tied in with the EAR, but she seems to believe that it was solved like 2 months later, that Mather AFB found the guy that shot both Brian, and Katie Maggiores, and that they imprisoned him for the crime, as the guy that shoot both Maggiores was a MP on the base and that this crime was related to drugs.

I myself think its related to EAR, and I am searching for any information my mom informed me of with no leads.

Just wanted to share the story."

The neighborhood

It was very unusual for the time period to have a couple out walking their dog murdered. I recently read that Jessup was apprehended for the Woolly Rapist crimes because he kept re-offending in the same neighborhood and was caught in a stake-out. That strategy never worked with EAR because he was so adept at moving neighborhoods.



However, the early attacks along Paseo are representative of a band of attacks and the Maggiore murder scene happens to fall right in the middle. Biondi said in an interview that they interviewed "thousands of airmen". That lead either went nowhere because it was either a) not relevant or b) there was a conspiracy.

This neighborhood was ground zero for EAR.Maggiore and Paseo attacks
