ONS Knots

ONS Knots: From the FDLE report on the ONS HOMICIDES: "The ligatures that were left behind on the first crime scene were tied with decorative diamond knots around the wrists of LYMAN and CHARLENE SMITH. The ankle ligature were tied with square knots, which were different from the wrist ligatures.

The Harringtons and Manuella Witthuhn had ligatures marks on their wrists and ankles. Janelle Cruz had a bruise abrasion on her right wrist and evidence of a soft ligature used on her wrists.

I have posted photos of the diamond knot and the square knot.

There is something to these knots...I just can't place it. I have looked up these knot extensively and have not found much. The Navy uses both of these knots. The square knot is similar to the Surgeon's knot. Scouts use the diamond knot and the square knot. I really that the diamond knot is a significant clue in finding out who our offender is.

In the "Offender Characteristics" in the FDLE profile, it discusses the knots tied had significance to this offender. "We believe the diamond knot was signficant to your offender." It was also stated that he likely fantasized about his crimes, imagining the use of bondage and the tying of ligatures with this decorative knot. Typically being masturbation fantasies in which he thinks about what he would do if he had the opportunity. g

Hold on, I am sure it is coming..The square knot is also known as the reef knot. It is considered a handy knot for temporary ties. The knot we use to tie our shoes is a double slipped square knot. TK invented that knot..

A similar bomb was delivered to Dr. David Gelernter, associate computer science professor at Yale University. The alleged sender — Mary Jane Lee of Cal State's computer science department — knew nothing of the parcel.

On June 23rd, the accomplished scholar received a package roughly the size of a shoebox. When he opened it mayhem erupted. The smoke from the explosion triggered fire alarms and sprinklers, the noise brought others running and the damage he sustained was horrendous.

The blast ripped off part of Gelernter's right hand, destroyed the sight in one eye and hearing in one ear. Bleeding, he managed to drag himself down five flights of stairs and staggered to the campus' medical center blocks away. By the time he got there, his vital signs were critical.

He was stabilized and rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital. The story of his difficult recovery makes fascinating reading in his book "Drawing Life — Surviving The Unabomber." Said to be fine artist, Gelernter had to re-learn to paint with his left hand.

He is, above all, a survivor — and the last one to live through a Unabomber attack.

"There are computer scientists far more distinguished than I...I don't even like computers very much."
- David Gelernter, on being targeted by the bomber, who saw computers as evil.

Soon after the bombing, a man telephoned the hospital where Gelernter's brother — a geneticist — was working. His message was brief and threatening; "You are next."

The same day Gelernter was hospitalized, The New York Times received a letter postmarked Sacramento, California.

Directed to assistant managing editor Warren Hoge, the letter claimed to speak for a group calling itself FC. Its authenticity seemed beyond question. Not only did it predict the latest two bombings, it connected the earlier Unabomings with a coded clue. In part, it read:

"We are an anarchist group calling ourselves FC. Notice that the postmark on this envelope precedes a newsworthy event that will happen about the time you receive this letter, if nothing goes wrong. This will prove that we knew about the event in advance, so our claim of responsibility is truthful. Ask the FBI about FC. They have heard of us. We will give information about our goals at some future time. Right now we only want to establish our identity and provide an identifying number that will ensure the authenticity of any future communications with us. Keep this number secret so that no one else can pretend to speak in our name."

The identifier — 553-25-4394 — read like a Social Security number. It turned out to be just that, and belonged to a paroled con. Co-incidentally, he had a prominent tattoo reading "Pure Wood." The only possible connection the FBI could come up with was that somehow, the Unabomber had stolen or found the ex-con's ID where he claimed to have lost it.

Kaczynski placed pieces of wood (and other nature materials) in his bombs. He was also a wood carver.

Also, the ONS most definitely placed wood (and other nature materials) in the bed of two of his victims.

Kaczynski not only would have known how to tie diamond knots, he would have had an attraction to their symbolism as "wood badges".

I find it strange that after all those rapes, he only began to experiment with bondage when he had a corpse to try it on. He tied everyone the same, bound wrists, bound ankles, until he started murdering. Fist he used decorative knots on the first couple, and on one of the following women, he tied the wrists to the ankles, presumably after she died. So his fantasy then was to tie dead women into bondage? I dont know much about the murders because it wasnt covered in ST, but I dont think he followed up this murder by using some new thing on the next one.

This is graphic and revolting but, as we all know, when a person dies, their muscles relax and the waste is no longer held within. So is this also part of the fantasy they have when theyre fantasizing about posing dead victims? Look at this progression from peeping, to breaking into homes, ransacking, raping, murdering, and then the next phase... which looks like we got a peek at in these crimes.


If he's not dead or in jail, and hes not murdering, then he's probably going off somewhere alone (if he doesnt live alone) to relive his fantasies. Dig up his costume jewelry and family album pictures and relive the good old days.

Oscar/DNA/Visalia

Just spoke with Oscar Clifton's wife. Not good news. He has signed papers to be put on life support, simply because when he dies, all legal work will terminate on his behalf. So far, what they have heard is that the DNA on the hairs from the ski cap were too decomposed, and DNA could not be determined. They are still awaiting DNA on the semen from the pubic hairs...hopefully results in October.



I know that this may not have anything to do with EAR/ONS, but I am still thinking that there IS a connection. I think that Donna Richmond, Jennifer Lynn Armour, and Beth were all at the hands of our VR.

They make me sick to my stomach. Oscar's family somehow never told me about the nylon over his face. All they ever said was that he had been picking peaches for $, and went to the St. John's River to get the peach fuzz off.

I'd previously read this article although some of the more popular sources have her last being seen at Kmart. The facts of the Armour case need the most ironing out of any on the Visalia end.

The newspaper is where I'd start. The case should have been fairly well covered and who knows what additional details might be obtained. Any idea if Oscar has ever been looked at in conjuncture with the Armour case, other than here on the board?

Overall Case Theory

Here is my approach to this case. I do not believe in the "perfect crime." I do not believe that one serial offender can commit at least sixty 261's (and attempted 261's), at least ten 187's, an undetermined number of 459's, prowlings, etc. -AND- not leave behind some evidence that will ultimately lead to him being identified. I would say that is impossible in this case.

That means that by carefully reviewing the available evidence and soliciting the public's help, this perpetrator CAN be identified (confirmed by the DNA he left behind).

What has been the obstacle thus far? First, time and money. Investigators do not have the luxury of being able to focus solely on this case. They have a case load. They are trying to solve MANY cases current as well as cold. If they had the time to focus solely on this case, there are limited funds for both investigating suspects and testing DNA.

Next, you have the old LE nemesis of not sharing information. You still have the departmental rivalries preventing cooperation between agencies and investigators. I am happy to say that there has been unprecedented cooperation within recent years.

As mentioned, we are starting to find the EAR's mistakes. We are understanding why he did this or that and didn't do this or that. Each time we find an M.O. shift, we start looking closer and paying attention. There is usually a clue to his identity there.

I will use the "Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez) case as an example. One kid wrote down a license plate of a strange vehicle in his neighborhood. Even though the car was stolen, RR left a single fingerprint that led to his identity.

That single clue is somewhere in the case files. Once it is found, it will lead to the EAR/ONS' identity.

Confrontation
The EAR has confronted couples in the past (and forced them back into the house). I think it was pure luck that the young man left when he did. If he remained at the Cruz residence, he would have been tied up and killed that evening.

Hi Port,

I agree with you 100%. I was thinking if he was outside the window, waiting and watching and planning on entering when they were sleeping but when the male was going to leave he decided to enter the garage and confront them both, but too late, as he was entering the garage the male was already exiting. I think maybe he lost his opportunity.

Didn't he confront Janell in the entry hall or possibly by the door that comes in from the garage? Do you think there was a possibility the male friend had left just seconds before she was attacked?

Also, Janelle said she thought the noise was the washing machine. I wonder when her friend left, she opened the door to the garage to go to the washing machine and EAR/ONS was standing right there!!!!! Oh, that is such a terrifying thought.

I read somewhere that Janelle was struck in the face at the "door" (I always thought front door, but I wonder if it was garage door)and it was theorized she was struck because she might have recognized her attacker, but what if she was struck immediately to prevent her from screaming? In other words I wonder if she was knocked out. But then again, Janelle's mom stated her daughter was struck from behind. I would imagine what Janelle's mom said would be the correct statement. So now I am thinking, she opened the garage door, saw him, was running away down the hall and he caught up to her and hit her on the head from behind. She would have been screaming in this scenario, so that makes me think the male friend would have at least been inside his car or completely gone to not have heard her.

The male friend must be so traumatized not only because Janelle was murdered but to realize how close he came to being a victim too. I freak myself out just typing this.

Overall Case Theory (Goleta)
I think that the Goleta attacks will tell us much about the offender. This was DKK's forst So Cal attack during his ONS phase of crimes (yes I do believe that to be true). Why did the offender not use the dish trick that served him so well in the previous rape cases? I believe that he did not want these attacks to be connected to the attacks up north. There are two possible reasons for this. Number one was that he was living in So Cal and if there was a newspaper article linking local crimes to offender that began in Sacramento the eyes in the room might focus on him. The second theory (my theory) is that the offender never left Sacramento. As he became more evidence conscious and more advanced he had come to understand geographic profiling. The Sac Union article in July of 1978 put forth the idea that some police thought that the Visalia Ransacker and the East Area Rapist might be linked. I think he thought that is the last time I will committ a crime where I live. The risk was simply to great. It would have been already been difficult to explain his past residence/work history in the Visalia area (yes with about 90% positive he was the VR) and now Sacramento. He would not create a link to a third separate geographic area.
You will notice at the EAR crimes continued they were farther and farther away from Sacramento. He knew that he could not undue the locations of the crimes he had already committed but in the future he would try to make LE think that he was far away from where he started and it worked briliantly. Why Goleta? My guess that he probably had some distant link to the SB area. Maybe he went there on vacation, maybe he had some family that lived in the general area. I think he at least had some general knowledge of the area. It was also out of newspaper range of Sacramento (pre-internet days). If a serial rapist started attacking in So Cal and no dish trick was used it would have been extreemly unlikely Sacramento the newspaers or the police would have picked it up. Since he decided he could not use his favorite dish trick (to avoid a link to Sacramento) he really handicapped himself of his best alarm system (which I beleive he originally picked up by leaving stacked dishes by doors in his burglary days). To a detective unfamiliar with EAR the Goleta attacks would appear to be the work of an inexperiended criminal. After the Goleta attack failed and his near capture and the long ride home I think he decided that the next time it would be murder, even if he had to rape the female in front of the male to start the deadly confrontation. In his mind that would be completely justified. After the first double murder it was easy to kill from there. I do beleive that he shot Rodney Miller and Claude Snelling but that was to avoid apprehension not killing for the sake of killing.He must have known that after the failed attack that any following home invasion in Goleta would be connected to his first attack there. He knew that there was a risk that a detective familiar with EAR might read that report and find some interesting parallels. The home invasion at night by a masked knife wielding madman, same language, same separating of the couples etc. Why did he risk going to Goleta again thus creatng a link to the original EAR-like attack, he could have attacked in Riverside, San Diego and so forth. The answer is simple he could not let it go. It was a challenge just like the Sac Bee saying he only attacked single women. He suffered from a major inferiority complex that raged in his mind. That was why the couple in Dana Point was murdered. The gated community was another challenge in his warped mind. "Do you think your safe behind that gate?" I am sure he thought to himself.After he decided to go back to Goleta he knew he would have to try to complicate the crime scene as much as possible to try to cast doubt with an EAR connection. There would be murder as opposed to just rape, a dog would be brought to the crime scene just to top it off. He felt comfortable bringing his dog to the crime scene because he did not live in that community it also helped him blend in as an ordinary jogger. Even though he did not live there when he was in Goleta he was still not at his home thus had no real alibi and did not want anyone in Sacramento noticing he seemed to be always gone on the dates of those attacks. He was a calculated risk taker. IMHO

Why the Woman Alone / Couple Debate?
I don't think the Witthuhn & Cruz murders were deescalations at all just because they were alone and I don't believe trying to understand why they were alone will yield insight to the killer. Here's why: in EAR's last ten crimes in northern California (Contra Costa County), he attacked 5 couples and 5 women/girls alone. He didn't make a transition to couples in Orangevale in April of '77 and stay with it - instead he flip-flopped for the duration of his crimes between couples and women alone. So why would we assume that the socal murders would be any different? If you take away the Goleta murders for a second (since we do not have evidential proof of involvement), we know for certain that EAR attacked two couples (Smith/Harrington) and two women alone (Witthuhn/Cruz) - a 50/50 split that is identical to his last ten northern rapes.

pure speculation here...
If EAR was 26yoa in '76 then he'd be 36 circa Cruz.
comparing this w/ BTK: of the 3 victims he took after age 40* 2 were elderly. Rader said the choice involved his ability to handle the victim.
I don't think ONS wanted to whip up on any buff male (that was awake) in 1986. for BTK-like reasons.
* he took no victims between ~32 and 40. The 3 victims he took after age 32 were all lone females.

Paul Jackson and Vance Roberts

Guys did Paul Jackson and Vance Roberts DNA ever got checked against EAR/ONS. These two committed crimes in Portland in the 1980s'. Their pictures in the 1980s' look similar to the photos of the ear/ons.

Multiple cars/ Persons on visits from home

When I look at the cases there are two things that I see. It seems that several types of cars/van were observed in the neighbourhoods before the rapes. Also several of the male/female occupants of the homes were away out of town. Now what does this mean. It can mean that this perp had access to several cars or vans that was used to stalk his victims. Also, it appears that he knew when some victims were home alone. What does it mean?

We have discussed before, but maybe it is time to bring it up again. How would a person have access to so many cars? Perhaps he was a driver between used car dealerships.

Or the vast majority of the cars/vans seen had nothing to do with the EAR-ONS crimes.However, the car dealership/hire idea is a good one and worth pursuing - maybe there is a simple 'angle' like this which LE overlooked...

Anyone know a used car dealer?
It seems to me that the cars he (assumed) was seen driving were older model cars/vans. My father-in-law had a used car lot in Huntington Beach and would hire young drivers to transport them to other lots, sometimes great distances. We should all ask our "older" friends if they ever drove cars in this manner to find out if they were on a set schedule, or how the scheduling of the car moves went. Does anyone know an ownder of a used car lot?

some excellent thoughts.Finding a connection in this case seems to be the most difficult and puzzling aspect of these crimes.I still wonder about the real-estate connection, maybe he even worked in a bank.Also how cars are thought to associated with these crimes? v-bug,1950s truck were the only ones i am aware of.Im not even sure if all these vehicles were even his getaway car?One victim said they were sure that he heard the engine of a vbug start after EAR left his house.

My Visalia POI has real estate connections, but I don't know if he was ever in Sacramento or in Ventura/Southern CA. He attended Berkeley, collected coins, wore/collected military garb, is left handed, around 5'9", looks just like one of the composites, lived in the area of McGowen's flashlight incident, etc. He was also at Atascadero State Mental Hospital for a while, extremely smart, and also into photography,.

I wouldnt be the surprised if he spent time in a mental hospital,just for the fact that some of the victims heard him bawling.At some point he may have come completly unglued and a family member had him admitted.He may have been put on heavy meds and might explain why he just stopped.When was he in the hospital?It would be pretty easy to find out where he resided or his family,through a background check.Allot of the things about your poi obviously add up for him to be a poi. Personally if i felt that strong about him i would tell LE.Dont just sit on it, thats why hes never been caught.I have no doubt that somebody close to him has had suspicions and never made the call.

I have taken his name to LE, and have had several follow-up conversations. I just don't know what exactly they have done, are doing, or will do with the information. That is one of the very frustrating things about taking a POI to LE...obviously they can't keep us informed on what the find. Next, I want to find out this guy's shoe size. It won't prove anything, but I figure the more I can find the better. The guy has a temper, has definitely been on heavy meds (lythium and others). In 1973 he lived in an abandoned house. He is still alive, healthy-athletic, and I consider him to be dangerous. If I had $1,000 to spend, I would go after his DNA myself.
After re-reading Sudden Terror, I personally think that he had a friend "driver" and that he was setting up house with the things he stole. In Visalia, the Visalia Ransacker took a suitcase, canned food, & antique dishes in one of his last break-ins. The Snelling girl was, I believe, either 15 or 16. EAR started out with young girls. I believe that we who have posted for years need to keep reiterating what we know. There are new people coming to the board every day who haven't had the advantage of the old AE posts from Archangel76, Ista, LFL, NightDriver, and others.

I am new to this board and I think you all are incredible. There are so many questions and all seem to have no solid answer. This car thing has my mind spinning. I don't know if someones already said anything I'm about to say so, sorry. How would I get access to multiple cars if I were staking out the house of the person I was going to rob and rape? The only things I have come up with so far are that he borrowed or rented them. My parents let me use their cars all the time and if I asked a friend and made up a legit reason they probably wouldn't mind either because they trust me. I think he was smarter than to use a vehicle that was associated with his work. Just a guess.

oh and I know this is far-fetched but it seems to me like he wasn't opposed to stealing cars either. Perhaps people on vacation or a neighbor who schedule conveniently left one car at home for a set window of time. Hell, he probably stole spare keys and no one ever knew he "borrowed" their cars. There goes my imagination.

You have brought up an interesting thought. The guy in Visalia went in and out of houses with ease. EAR seemed to as well...scoping out neighborhoods in advance. He probably lifted the keys and stole cars. I wonder.

I agree with SammyT that it's possible (and even probable) that most of the vehicles described in Sudden Terror had no connection to the EAR. Almost all the circumstances that yielded a vehicle description were tentative in their connections, with no direct line between the witness observation and the associated EAR offense. There's a good chance one or two of those reports may have been of the EAR's vehicle. Consider also the variables involved with such observations: at night, it's difficult to ascertain the color of a vehicle. Sodium vapor street lights, in particular, distort the color of objects with their distinct orange hue. Additionally, how many of you would know the make, year, and model of a car you observed from a distance, even if you had some reason to believe that car was significant?

The most solid data from Sudden Terror, in my opinion, with respect to vehicles is that some of the victims heard a VW engine start up after the attacker left. Obviously, these individuals knew enough about cars to know the sound of a VW engine.

With respect to Visalia, it might benefit the case to begin looking away from this region. I no longer think the Visalia Ransacker was the EAR/ONS. There's still a possibility, but I think that possibility is slim. I don't think the EAR/ONS had any connection to Tulare County. I also no longer think he was from San Joaquin County. I still believe he may have spent a month there, however, in summer of 1978, when he was attacking in Modesto and Davis.

and you may be wrong. I will still try to solve VR in hopes that EAR/ONS can also be solved at the same time. I understand your doubts, and respect them. There isn't a board for VR -- absolute lack of interest in solving the VR. But, there are many who still consider the possibility that EAR began as VR, I being one.

An extensive check was done in Sac and surrounding towns and cities by LE on motels, hotels and other places offering nightly accomodation for rent during the EAR period. No person was found. I can see this guy staying with relatives in Sac but when he starts to attack in towns and cities away from Sac as EAR where is he staying. Was he camping?. Was he using an R.V.? Was he staying in houses under construction? Was he staying in his car?

In the Gainsville case Danny Rolling was camping. If the Modesto person of interest was EAR then there was a possibility he was staying at night in houses under construction.

If he was staying at night in homes under construction was he ever charged by LE or some City or town Bylaw enforcement agency for trespassing on property.

Slept in the car. If he slept away from his residence, which I doubt he ever did. But if he was in fact ex-military he could sleep anywhere anytime. I got my discharge in 1968 and I can still sleep on command. Makes my wife soooo mad.

point because some people here have suggested that EAR may have been commuting to carry out the attacks in the Bay area between attack 39 and 45 (as evidenced by a lot of Saturday rapes and very little activity during the week), but I dont think he may have necessarily needed to stay somewhere overnight considering that this guy was nocturnal it could also be possible he drove to crime scenes (arriving after dark) and then went back "home" to sleep during daytime hours

Worth Remembering

One of my father-in-laws friends was an FBI agent (long deceased). He told me after a long and well lubricated dinner that there are about 25 ways that murderers get caught and most of them are smart enough to figure out 20 of them. It was the other five that got 'em caught. EAR somehow knew all 25. he didn't give LE any connections between himself, where he slept, what he drove or any of his "social habits" I'll wager he knew they were going to profile him, And what the profile would say. Then he didn't conform to the profile. I've posted before about the Stockton policewoman who interviewed 6 of the Sacramento victims. She told my wife "Don't plan on us catching this guy."

There was a guy who spent a lot of time in motels in Sacramento and the Bay Area where he killed or injured people and the FBI never caught him on the radar. It's pretty difficult to identify someone with a false name. I don't think there's any point in telling you folks who this was since you probably already know who I am talking about. He also slept outdoors, in parks, wooded areas, etc... He was known to sleep outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions, even sub-zero temperatures... Some say EARONS slept outdoors as well.

If there was a hotel/motel connection I would guess it would be prevalent in the alternating four Modesto/Davis attacks where he's obviously commuting between the two towns and attacking on 1 to 2 day turnarounds.

interesting point about EAR possibly sleeping outdoors, there was report were someone said he smelled stale there could be something here...............maybe the guy was a drifter and lived rough from time to time

Not to my knowledge (I was about six at the time, so it wasn't discussed in great depth around me). I do know that the woman hired a bodyguard to protect her in her home.

What if ear/ons is not from Sacramento or California

I just finished reading Ann Rule's book on Ted Bundy "The stranger besides me". Just before Bundy was executed he confessed to kidnapping, raping, killing and disposing of a girl he kipnapped from a school play ground during the school's lunch break in Pocatello, Idaho. Police now believes that girl was 13 year old Lynette Culver (Bundy did not know her name).



What I found interesting was that Bundy stated that on the day he killed Lyne Culver he had a strong urge to kill a female. So he loaded up his VW bug car with enough gas in Utah (he did not want to stop and refuel in Idaho maybe because he did not want to leave a trail that police can follow) and drove from Utah to Pocatello, Idaho killed and dumped Lyne and then drove back (on that one tank of gas) to Salt Lake, Utah. That is over 300 miles on one tank of gas.



The Idaho police did not have a clue that they were looking for Bunday or even someone living out of state as the killer until Bundy confessed.



My point is this: We and LE are all focused on EAR/ONS being someone who lived in Sacramento as a young man. What if he is not from Sacramento but drove into the city like Bundy did then committe crimes and then drove out of the city and out of the state of California

The reason I believe the Visalia Ransacker was local to Visalia
In the mid 1970 as today Visalia was split in half ( north and south ) by highway 198 and with only two high schools Redwood to the north and Mt. Whitney to south.The only way to cross over from south side to the north side was at over passes or very busy intersections and that would have been very compendious on foot.All of the ransackings were on the south side only , while just across 198 on the north side was a prefect area for ransacking named Green Acers , upper class homes with lots of trees and shrubbery and Mill creekrunning straight thru.. If a outsider from say Lemoore Naval Air Station was the Ransacker he would have found Green Acers a prime target, but no , all ransackigs were on the southside in his comfort zone.IMO I believe the VR was a local young man and a student or former student of Mt. Whiney H.S.

Yes Port he could have been a serviceman but most rent in Hanford or Lemoore and he would've had transportation available to drive over to the northside to park and scout out the area.I believe the ransacker was young and didn't alway have a car available at that time.I also believe he had a connection to the Mt. Whiney band and remember the note left in the Whitney parking lot the next morning after the Snelling murder, for Beth, and that was before the after noon Times Delta printed the story.

Zoom out from Visalia and look at how many small towns are within a 20-30 minute drive. He didn't have to live in Visalia. And assuming (There's that word again) that The Ransacker morphed into EAR he was a devious son of a gun. Proven by the fact that nobody has caught him yet and without DNA he probably wouldn't everr be Id'ed

The idea of him living in another town has been kicked around by pretty much every local familiar with the case, but we always end up back in that neighborhood. Interestingly, his first confirmed burglary is on Linda Vista...and while he repeat hits on the same streets throughout his spree...he never returns to Linda Vista. A little too close to home maybe?

The last known call that was made to a victim was in 1991, according to an interview with law enforcement. Prior to that the latest call was made in 1982.

Thanks for that info , Interestingly victim 24 was attacked in La Riveria drive and EAR seemed to have a lot of activity and attacks on that road in the last months of 1977- there must be something significant about this road and victim for him to make contact 5 years later

Another article stated that LE said the EAR had a vasectomy

and there's been contention with that too. Only one investigator has ever said there was a 1991 phone call. Others say it didn't happen, like the author of "Sudden Terror."

It was clear he was unaware of any 1991 phone call and right after the interviewer asked him about it, she referenced the '78 call (the well-known one that was recorded) confusing him in the process. Inv. Crompton or any other LE is not privy to everything, especially in a case that stretches as long and as wide as the EAR-ONS crimes.

M13,

The 1990-91 phone call is significant because if it came from the EAR/ONS, it establishes that he was alive and well as late as 1990-91. Not dead or sitting in prison somewhere. If he was alive as late as 1990-91, then he is, in all probability, alive today.

The call did happen to victim #7. Troy you are right that the interviewer may not of posed the question properly. I was on the line with Larry Crompton during the interview and we all talked afterwards and I clarified to Larry and Michelle the facts surrounding the call. At that time Larry stated "he did not have any personal knowledge of those calls and therefore he could not speak about them" It is a very significant call. And it does let us know that EAR was still actively interested in his victims.

What is interesting in Crompton's book about "Margarita Lopez" (attacked on 10-1-77 and who was called on 10-21-82) is that the attack did not happen in her home and the man is given two last names..."Westcott and Hays" Pg. 278.

Calling from where?
Does anyone have any idea where EAR was calling in all his phone games/threats from? I suspect a lot of the time he was calling to check when potential victims were at home and their neighbors.
Anyway was he calling from a payphone or somebodies house he had broken into? maybe he was a phone phreak? How long do you have to stay on the line for a phone trap to work?

In Sudden Terror it is mentioned that during the infamous "gonna kill u" call there was clicking heard on the other end of the line, as if EAR was tapping the switch hook erratically. Now this may have been a hallucination of mine but I seem to recall hearing that this was a method of defeating phone traps.

RADIO BUGS:

The next step up in Phone Tapping – How to Tap A Phone is some kind of radio bug. In the days not so long ago when the BT issue phone was a wedge of cheese shaped affair with a dial on the front, a favourite bugging device used to be the ‘drop in’ mike. The handset microphone was a carbon granule device, quite bulky but easy to remove; unscrew the mouthpiece, slip off a pair of wires from their terminals and its out. The crafty buggers found a much better use for all that space than filling it with carbon granuals. Buying microphones from the very same people who supplied BT, they would empty out of the granuals, put in a much smaller mike and would empty out the granuals, put in a much smaller mike and a small radio transmitter, then seal the whole thing back together again. Drop it into the handset and off you go. It is estimated that the numbers made around the world ran into millions, so they were not uncommon! Still used for bugging public telephones, but not much good for the wide varity of office and home phones now in use.
SERIES AND PARALLEL BUGS:

Also very common and readily available are a variety of bugs which connect either in series with one telephone wire or in parallel across the two. The series bug has the advantage of only transmitting when the telephone is used; the parallel one transmits continuosly in its crudest form (and most commercial bugs are pretty crude) but can be a little more difficult to detect by simple voltage measurements. Let’s face it, it would be a trivial matter to design a bug that is both triggered by use of the phone and virtually impossible to detect by voltage measurements, but since almost nobody takes seriously the idea that they may be a suitable target (do you think you are, for instance?) and therefore won’t be checking, why bother with anything complicated?

INFINITY TRANSMITTER:

The most exotic of the commonly used listening devices is the ‘infinity transmitter’, so called because once the victim can be snooped on from anywhere in the world. Anywhere his phone can be reached by direct dialling, that is. This is what you do: dial up the victim’s number and hold your little black mystery box close to the mouthpiece. In the simplest versions, the mystery box just sends a tone down the line which is picked up by a frequency selective circuit inside the bug. The mystery box activates the infinity transmitter, which you previously attached to the victim’s phone. Once activated, the transmitter prevents the phone from ringing, and instead sends down the line any sounds picked up by the victim’s telephone, or by the bug’s own internal microphone.

This is how it works. On recieving the activating tone, the transmitter passes enough current between the two lines to fool BT’s equipment into thinking that the phone has been answered, so the ringing tone is cancelled and the line is opened. Once connection is made, all the bug has to do is to modulate the line voltage in just the way the telephone itself would. Not very difficult. The victim is entirly unaware of anything happening and, with a hookswitch defeat installed, it could be his own telephone acting as a microphone for the transmitter. The bug will automatically cut out if the handset of the victim’s phone is lifted, allowing it to be used normally.

HOOK SWITCH DEFEAT:

Much simpler than the infinity transmitter, and used in much the same way, is the hookswitch defeat. When you hang up the telephone, a switch disconnects the handset… unless, that is, somebody has doctored the phone. The simplest method is just to wire a resistor across the switch. In use you phone the victim, apologise for having called up the wrong number, let him hang up but keep your phone off the hook to hold open the connection. Then you listen in. The sound level won’t be very high, so you may need an amplifier.

The difficulty with a plain hookswitch is that you need access to the telephone itself and enough time to dismantle it. There is also the possibility that an innocent caller may be slow to hang up and find himself accidently eavesdroping. A bit of a giveaway. Hookswitch defeats are easy to spot by anyone familiar with the insides of a telephone, but can often be overlooked in inspection by a suspicious buggee since, unlike infinity transmitters and the like, it could easily be part of the workings of the phone.

Take the idea of ‘looking as if it belongs’ to its conclusion and you have the ‘lost’ tranmitter. What you do is to find a large-ish component in the telephone (or typewritter, calculator, or whatever) which itself uses any signal you need access to. You then rush home to your garden shed and knock up a device which not only does what this component does, but contains a transmitter too. You package it to look exactly like the component you’re replacing. Then you pop back one night and swap the two around. Anyone inspecting the phone or whatever will find it contains exactly the components it should – no more and no less. The transmitter is really and truly lost.

This really is big league stuff – the kind of trick employees of rival governments like to play on each other. Not the kind of thing you will personally come across unless you have access to very valuable information indeed. There’s an American company called Fox which could be persuaded to come up with the goodies if you approach them in the right way and have the funds. They’re in the phone book.

Okay that is about it for Phone Tapping – How to Tap A Phone, but do bear in mind that BT are very touchy about having alien equipment connected to their lines, even if it is just a capacitor and headphones.

Well if an athletic, mid 20s white guy stopped by the police twenty minutes after an EAR crime, with lotion, shoelaces, a knife and a gun in his car wasn't investigated with a fine tooth comb then I'm not so surprised that EAR-ONS managed to slip the net.
The 'guy with the lotion' (according to 'Sudden Terror') was fingerprinted and had his property searched, but wasn't put under surveillence to check if he had access to other residences, didn't have a blood sample taken and worst of all wasn't arrested on suspicion of rape and made to sweat out some tough questions at the police station.

ROY MORRIS - The Man With A Bad Knee

Hello, Mr. SammyT, sir. I like your posts. You seem to be zeroing in on the same
things I am zeroing in on. Smile

There is another suspect in the book who basically has a PHANTOM STATUS and perhaps
may be a bit more difficult to track than The Man With The Lotion.

At least The Man With The Lotion was fingerprinted and photographed... this other
suspect wasn't even questioned because he had a "bad knee".

This other suspect is referred to in "SUDDEN TERROR" as ROY MORRIS.

A police informant talks about ROY MORRIS as being 21 years old,
blond hair, around 5 foot-nine, not a big fella. Drank a lot of beer.
He was a burglar and a thief.

ROY MORRIS was even arrested for prowling.

The police informant said ROY MORRIS was adopted... and Morris'
father (step-father) was a real estate salesman who apparently went
crazy or something and had to check himself into a mental institution...
something along those lines.... and his mom was dying of cancer.

He wasn't known to have any girlfriends.

The police informant said ROY MORRIS lived in Vallejo, but every time he
came to Sacramento it coinicided with the rapes committed by The East Area Rapist.

The officer who got ahold of this information did some investigating, tracked
down Morris' mom and his sister.

Roy Morris' sister told the officer that Roy Morris had been in a motorcycle
accident in 1974 and that he had a pin in his shoulder and a bad knee.

The officer found out where Roy Morris had worked, went to his work place to make
some inquiries and found out that nobody liked him and that Morris had been fired.

The supervisor at the place Morris worked said Mr. Morris walked with a
NOTICEABLE LIMP.... it was because of this information that there was
NO FOLLOW-UP.

It was reasoned that The East Area Rapist was agile, fast, athletic,
phyiscally fit... and, therefore, a man with a limp can NOT qualify as a
possibility.

Regardless, I wish Roy Morris had been tracked down and thoroughly checked out.

This information can be found in Chapter 23, Pages 211 - 213.

This interaction between the officer and the police informant happened in 1977.

Wasn't this the same excuse OJ Simpson used as his defense as to why he could not have killed 2 people?Yeah, right, bad knees...

Crompton really needs to check those two guys out. I would also like to ask him some questions. I wish he would post on here sometime so we could get some answers.

In my opinion, Roy Morris is not a great suspect. No victim ever describe EAR as walking with a limp, which is not something you can hide. Plus, he lived in Vallejo. "Every time he comes into Sacramento, a rape occurs" is the sort of exaggeration many "out of the woodwork" informants are prone to. I believe EAR lived in the Sacramento area. We know he did a lot of recon, so Roy Morris would had to have come into Sacramento a lot more frequently than just when the rapes occurred; so frequently, in fact, that he'd had to have practically lived there.

The Informant who gave the Roy Morris information to the officer in SUDDEN

TERROR... I don't know... by reading between the lines I got the impression

that The Informant was a drug addict or a male prostitute or something along

those lines... The Informant asked the police officer for $5, but the cop was

only willing to give him $3.... I think both of them knew what the other was

on about, you know what I mean? By virtue of the fact that The Informant

gave off a Hustler type of vibe, it's only natural to assume not ALL of

the information he gave the officer would be 100% golden.

The information The Informant gave the officer seemed partially true... the whole
"the guy lives in Vallejo and rapes occur in Sacramento when he comes down" comment....
yeah, I admit, that part of the tip wasn't exactly one of the highlights....

But there was more than enough credible information that I feel at the very
least an adequate elimination should have happened.

There's an old expression I heard in a western with Richard Boone, I think.... it went
something like this:


"It's better to have a gun and not need it... than to need a gun and not have it."


In other words, it's better to have eliminated Roy Morris no matter how unlikely he is/was
The East Area Rapist than to have assumed he wasn't "good" for The East Area Rapist.

And yet, Mr. SpeakelOfEngrish, sir, I know exactly where you're coming from.... police
officers have to allocate their time and resources and can't go out there chasing
every lead down.

They have to look at it... and see if it makes sense to follow it... or not.

Like others have stated, suspects were eliminated because of the size of their penis.
I acknowledge that the "bad knee" thing irks me. Everything else looked sort of good
except that damn knee....

Oh well....

Shouldn't be a surprise.
I'll lay odds that somebody who interacted with or read the "Lotion Man" report said to a superior "We ought to follow up on this guy" and the superior said "Naa, not him, drop it and go to work on this." Not anything shady going on here, just human nature. And it's hard for me to believe that at a point (Maybe not here) EAR was one of the subjects that somebody in a position of authority said about "Naa, not him. Go to work on this."

Interesting info ...thanks; I had been wondering about the Visalia connection and now that you mention the lotion the dots are connecting, funny enough during Watergate someone said "follow the money" I think with the VR/EAR/ONS the term "follow the lotion!" ( LOL) would be more appropriate. That suspect is the best suspect I have heard of in this case and I am shocked he wasnt thoroughly scrutinised. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence- because cops didnt find anything at his house they should not have dropped it- interestingly someone wrote a post a few days ago saying that maybe EAR kept his souvenirs in storage and now that I think of the lotion man and you join those two facts .........you kinda get were Im going with this argument....anyone know if the lotion man has been followed up recently ?

You are right dengas, VR also left fingeprints on a magazine. The fingers had been in lotion near or at the time of viewing the magazine. With that knowledge I am fairly certain he was using the lotion for a the same purpose, minus the rape victim. g

Common Bonds Chart

I periodically update this chart as I learn new information. For example, I have found real estate ads from the weeks of the Harrington murders and Manuela Witthuhn's. The house directly across from Manuela was for sale and a home in the Harrington's gated community was for sale by owner. I also learned that Patrice Harrington's father was a career Air Force officer- a Colonel who practiced law and who was retired from the Air Force at the time of her murder.

If anyone has information to update this chart, please send it to me. I may have too narrow a focus in just looking at real estate, medical, etc.

My only suggestions might be adding the Maggiore's under the "Aviation" and "Military" sections.

And also making a category for "Computers/High Tech" adding "H & H" and Domingo & Sanchez, as all four worked in computers and/or at high tech business companies. Also add Keith Harrington, as his father (whose house he was living in) invented and patented a high tech video surveilance camera system.

Excellent suggestions Akwilks! i wish we had data to do the same thing with the EARS victims. We do know some were nurses or the children /spouses of doctors, some went to the same computer lab at CSUS, etc. I just feel that I am missing other obvious links, but the high tech angle is certainly one to consider.

Rentals and For Sale properties...

even if not involved in residential real estate as a client it seems possible home listings played a part in his stalking.

2 dna-linked EAR crimes were rental....The 1st being a home from which the victims were packing to move.

The 2nd being a home which was owned by the victim's boyfriend and was for sale.

Perhaps he used real estate postings to get a feel for what the land value/rents were like in particular neighborhoods in order to access the type of people who would reside there, income level, professions ETC. Assuming such factors played into who he decided to target,.

I want to preface this post by saying that Mr. Witthuhn suffered greatly for the tragic loss of his wife. For new posters, David Witthuhn posted on the old board as "Irvine" and graciously answered questions by fellow posters. I also hope that posters read with great empathy how this crime impacted Mr. Witthuhn, ultimately contributing to his early death in 2008. We need to remind ourselves that for every victim raped or killed there were/are peripheral family members still suffering. That is why I am very serious and focused in my research.

His mention of an unknown voice of someone sounding of African American descent left on the answering machine the day before the murder of Manuela is noteworthy. There are two Sacramento sources that say Ear sometimes disguised his voice to reflect a southern accent.

Nick g, You are very kind in your interest. I am only going by what I have been told or what I know factually. You ask many questions that brings back stuff that is hard to remember and hurts as well. All efforts are out the window, so here is a few facts as I know them.
The lamp was taken and presumed the murder weapon.
Yes he made the scene look like a robbery.
The TV was just moved from a back bedroom and left on the patio.
No carving gone just lamp and like a crystal ball on a wood base about six inches total height.
The tape from the answering machine was taken I was told.
Had one mysterious call one day earlier obviously a older african american decent voice.
I checked out (ama) as soon as I found out the situation when I could not get a hold of my Wife.
I was in a total of three days.
Yes they asked and no I did not encounter anyone.
Yes some jewelry was taken.
Yes a fence around the back yard.
Irvine has a park on just about every block.
There was a few vacant homes as it was a new housing development at the time.
We had contacts with a construction boss to fix defects.
Nothing ever mentioned of strands of fiber.
The LE questioned anyone and everyone around or work environments, neighborhoods, and the Hospital.
The LE I feel did more than expected and really tried considering they assumed I had something to do with this.
Myself I have been the focus of Police Depts., Sheriff depts., FBI, IRS, phone taps, surveillance, DNA, hypnosis, lie-detector tests, FBI and Police, entrapment plans, media suspicion and hours of interviewing by all. They were pretty thorough related to me. They were always kind, empathetic and respectful. It still caused many repercussions. I have had a heart attack and died,brought back, 2 Grand Mall seizers, anxiety attacks, mini-strokes, large stroke and I'm still here. I have never went the route of benefiting money wise by interviews, books or such, which I have been offered many times.
There was some relief having LE focus in the right direction after 17 years but I feel a lot of waisted effort and time was spent that could have been better directed. That's just hindsight though. In all fairness they didn't know either and we did not have the technology we have now.

I take my hat off...
Thank you Port for saving this...These are the words of a man who is sadly not with us any longer. The amount of trauma he has endured is unlike anything I could ever imagine. He was very brave to come foward and speak about what happened. Rest in Peace.

One really cannot help but wonder just what kind of contact ONS was making with his victims in the days and weeks prior to their passing.

That was very nice of David to come to the boards in 2005 and share all that with us. Anyone have the questions that reference those answers David provided?
