Sexual Burglaries

What we were referring to as "bizarre burglaries" has an actual name, as some on the board have already figured out. "Sexual burglaries" are much more common, such that they have been studied, especially as it related to "sexual homicide".

I came across this paper written about sexual burglaries:

It confirmed my suspicions about the VR's style of burglarizing vs the EAR's. I discerned a distinct difference such that an explanation by others was necessary to account for the difference. The VR's style of burglary (according to this study) would come under the subcategory of "fetish burglary" wherein the burglar had a fixation with women's undergarments.

The EAR's style of burglary (according to this study) would come under the subcategory of "voyeuristic burglary." We are getting back into the area of signature vs M.O. Signature is that part of a serial offenders crime that does not change. The VR, even after attempting to kidnp Snelling's daughter, continued with his fetish burglaries. Russell Williams continued with his fetish burglaries even after raping and murdering his victims.

The EAR NEVER engaged in a "fetish burglary" wherein he showed any undue interest in women's undergarments.

Oh ye of little faith. It may not be here, it may not be LE, it may be something we never even considered, heard of or even thought of (remember EAR surely never even imagined the advancements in technology and DNA etc.). EARONS will be identified. That is a fact. You and I may not be around to see it happen but there will come a day and the world will know his identity. The sad part of that is EAR might be dead and his family will feel the heat and they will suffer. EAR is such a chickenpoop that he will not only victimize the countless victims he raped, tortured and killed but he will leave a family somewhere that will be humiliated, shamed and disgusted. They will have to bear the brunt of all his crimes. My heart aches to think he might have children who will have to know that their father is this pig we have all searched endlessly for while he hides. The light of justice will shine on you EAR. And then there is a place they call Hell and I don't know a lot about it but I would hate to think I might end up there. But even more I would hate to know there is no place else but hell for me and that is your legacy. Doubt there is anything you can do about that! Especially since you have not come forward and confessed your crimes. Even then it is hard for me to believe there is an exception for you to be any where except for hell. Wow, where did this hell talk come from.

Don't let this board discourage you. There are many ways to help. We are all human on this board and sometimes it gets ugly but I have to believe we ALL want the EAR identified and captured. Out of all the years I have done this, I can truly say, there are only one or two individuals I have met on this journey that I question their motives for being here. And by here I don't just mean this board. We all argue at times. We all don't like everyone here. But....if you are serious about helping advance this case to justice don't sweat the small stuff. And this is the small stuff. The primary purpose for being here has nothing to do with all out personalities and differences it has to do with bringing a vicious serial rapist and killer out of the shadows. g

If ears has any kids, they need to know that that they might carry a biogenetic predisposition to psychopathy, based on whatever their dad may have had that skewed him the way it did. They might pass those genes on and never make another ears, because it usually takes more than that to make a sadistic sociopath. But you never know if youre going to be churning out a sociopath that will ruin peoples lives, left , right and center, and most likely your own. Like giving birth to a dick cheney or karl rove. A little blob of cells that feels no empathy for others; just steeped in hatred, anger and duplicity. I'd want to know about my dad being ears before I decided to take the chance at playing genetic russian roulette.

I agree with Grundle. ONS could come to this webiste and confess to his crimes and no one would believe him. Also, there is a ton of speculation that is just garbage.

However. this site is very useful for multiple reasons. It gives the people who really know what they are doing a forum for passing information back and forth.

Plus, there is so much drama in this case playing out today. Thousands of people have been effected by these crimes directly. Image all the heartache that has been caused by just one person. This is not a game, or an interesting past time, this is real. People are hurt and continue to be hurt in the present time by brutality of losing thier loved ones.

Keep up the discourse, its going to work. The more we talk about it, the more we learn. Its only going to take one person to stop DKK. I belive that it iBadges going to happen soon.

Janelle Cruz- evidence of slight change in MO?

The Oakdale 1987 discussion made me think of the possibility of an evolving MO for ONS, as well as the murder of Janelle Cruz. I wonder why ONS would just sneak into a house only to beat someone over the head and leave? (referring to Oakdale crime) To me its a completely different MO then first waking someone up, tieing them up, spending time, and having complete power over one or two people. I agree with f1, there must be something else that Crompton knows, and thats why he put it in the book.

John Douglas, the ex-FBI profiler talks about MO vs signature in one of his books. He writes that the MO for an offender can change (and is an "archaic" method to link crimes in this day and age). Douglas argues that the signature, however, stays the same and is simply what the offender has to do to fulfill himself. That is Douglas's opinion on the matter.

The point I want to make: there was one thing about the Janelle Cruz murder that was different than just about every one of the rapes and murders. Unless I'm mistaken (and please correct me if I'm wrong) it seems that Janelle Cruz was the only victim who was not in bed sleeping when ONS attacked her. Is the consensus thought that ONS just waited for Janelle's friend to slip out the door? And then he just confronted her in the house without waiting for her to fall asleep when she was most vulnerable? I remember her mother saying on the E! special that she was hit on the back of the head when she was walking away from him. In Sudden Terror Crompton writes that there were no ligature marks although there were abrasions and scrapes on Janelle's wrists. And there was blood all over the kitchen. It seems to me that he surprised her somewhere in the house, possibly in the kitchen, maybe struggled with her, then hit her very hard with the pipe (from outside) and brought her into the bedroom. This is a bit different for him. This seems a bit bolder and riskier. So if he changes this part of his MO as late as 1986, perhaps this is why we don't know of any other attacks. Maybe something like the Oakdale attack is what had become of his MO...

One is that ONS gained a half hour by not having to perform the tea cup charade and was free to spend more time biting and bruising the female victims as he was, no doubt, calling names, etc.
The other could be that he lost momentum in killing the man, e,g. not as exciting as the thrill of knowing you had dominion over two potential threats. That mind frame would require more time for him to achieve his pathetic form of arousal.
He seems to have gotten off on the woman suffering more than the man, so in killing her partner )(which would quadruple her suffering ),he may have felt more powerful sexually(meaning maybe he didn't have to spend two hours walking around the house to get a semi- erection as he did in most of the Ear rapes).

Do you mind sharing the autopsie reports with us all? I sill feel the neighbors acted very ignorant in the situation. It's no wonder this guy got away every time.

I don't really thinkit was ignorance; I think it was being naiive. In the '70s, in the neighborhoods (middle class to upper middle class) people weren't really exposed to gun shots and crime. We sure as heck didn't watch CSI Crime Scene Investigates!!!

Gun shots
I have occasionally heard what could be interpreted as gunfire while in my home. In most or all instances, it was probably not gunfire. I considered calling the police in some of those instances, but didn't. I think, generally, most people would not call the police unless they were absolutely certain a gun had just been fired.

I don't know, SOE. If it was 3 a.m. and I think I hear gunshots AND a scream... I think I would be on the phone to police immediately.

There was a instance when a resident in northern california saw a masked man in a neighbors back yard. What did they do? that person closed the curtains and didn't call the cops. These people were clearly not thinking. This ignorance/scared to report/ibeing naiive helped ear/ons get away.

Something Else To Keep In Mind...

You almost never hear automobile backfires anymore. Why? Most cars today are no longer carburated. When carburated vehicles backfire, the sound is practically congruent to a firearm discharge. I can somewhat understand why someone would be hesitant to call the police in a circumstance such as this.

As per the failure to alert police of prowlers/burglars, I have a serious problem with that, and that's something that's bothered me about the EAR/ONS cases since I first read of them back in 2005. True, the argument can be made about people not wanting to get involved, people being frightened, or people not wanting to believe that bad things happen, but ultimately in my view, these people who've failed to act are--to a degree--culpable for what later occurred in many instances: future EAR/ONS attacks. I can't recall who said it (I want to say Benjamin Franklin), but I love this saying: "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing." Apply that to these scenarios. Every time I hear about the woman in San Ramon, CA who saw EAR/ONS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT SANS SKI MASK it makes my blood boil. That's only one of several examples in these cases.

I looked it up and the quote came from Edmund Burke (Jan 12, 1729 - July 9, 1797) an Irish political philosopher, Whig politician and statesman who is often regarded as the father of modern conservatism. Wikiquotes. Yes, in Crompton's book he stated that the people that should have called didn't and the people that shouldn't have called did.

The unwillingness of these witnesses to call is one of a myriad of a factors that contributed to killing these cases. Again, I cannot understand--nor can I defend--the position of NOT notifying police when someone is breaking into a neighbor's home in BROAD DAYLIGHT. A76 is wont to say this, and he's correct: EAR/ONS literally had the luck of the devil.

In the dominguez-Sanchez case, what sounded like a gunshot was heard AND a scream. Ignorance allows something like that for people to not take seriously.

Multiple vehicles

Quick question for anyone, I'm sure its been asked before- did anyone look into stolen vehicles in Sac or elsewhere during the rapes? If they thought he was using different vehicles to case neighborhoods and to go back and forth, how the hell do you do that unless you're rich, own a car dealership (no I'm not serious about that one) or just steal cars and use them for the day or something?

It's okay.... I am not angry at anyone if they feel Remote Viewing is a waste of time..

The only thing I am interested in is whether or not Mr. Crompton and/or Detective Pool

I haven't seen the video, Repoman said he saw Chris Angel on youtube and I needed a comeback line. I went to youtube and thought ..hmmm.monkey's are always funny. So I put monkey in the search and it went to that video. I had my comeback line, and I got someone to review the monkey video for me. I thought it sounded disgusting by the title.

Chances are.....

that EAR probably used a car that was not registered to him or was stolen given that he routinely stole I would hazard a guess and say maybe he swiped a car to use and given his planning and cunning manner I dont think he would use his personal car................

This thread is for posting and discussing similar unsolved crimes that have not been formally linked to the EAR-ONS, but could speculatively be connected.

I'll start with these two unsolved murders from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Laura Kempton
Sept 18, 1981
On Monday, September 28, 1981 at 9:30 a.m., the body of Laura Kempton, age 23, was found murdered in her apartment located at 20 Chapel Street in Portsmouth, NH. The autopsy conducted by the NH Medical Examiner reported Laura died of massive head trauma, consistent with being struck by a blunt object, causing contusions and lacerations of the brain. Laura was a student at the Portsmouth Beauty School and was employed at Macro Polo, Inc. and Karen's Ice Cream Parlor.

Oct 19, 1982
On Tuesday, October 19, 1982 Tammy Little was found murdered in her apartment located at 315 Maplewood Avenue in Portsmouth, NH. The autopsy conducted by the NH Medical Examiner determined Tammy, age 20, died as a result of massive head injuries. Tammy was a student at the Portsmouth Beauty School.

1) Portsmouth was the home of Pease Air Force Base until 1991

2) Portsmouth Beauty School might have had a hard time recruiting students after 1982

Once Again Just Guessing
I'm going to guess that Portsmouth LE has a pretty good idea who killed these girls. Just not enough evidence to make an arrest. key to me is that both of them went to the same school. Stockton LE spent a lot of time trying to find connections between the two vics here to very little effect.

However, these cases came to mind last night when I came across an individual who was stationed at Mather AFB, had an address in Irvine, and also lived in Portsmouth, NH at some point in the '80s. He's someone on whom I've been able to find very little other information, however.

Intriguing though the above info may be, it may sound less intriguing in light of the fact that I've a growing list that thus far probably exceeds 500 names (of men between the ages of 53 and 65 who've lived in, say, Visalia and Sacramento, Sac and Irvine, Sac and Goleta, Visalia and Ventura, and any combination of these).

"In spite of common elements in the two murders, and Lindsay's hunch that "one guy knows about this," he said there's "no physical evidence that it's the same guy.

There is DNA evidence, say the investigators, and a $20,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest and conviction remains active"

At first glance this seems contradictory. But I hope they run the DNA against that from the EAR/ONS. Since it's numbers on paper shouldn't take that long. BTW, I had a look at the New Hampshire cold case website and nothing else jumped out at me.

I've eliminated some, and I've prioritized others. Thus far, the ones that initially looked most exciting have been eliminated.

Visalia Ransacker and class schedules

Strangely enough, the Visalia Ransacker only struck on weekends with the exception of 3 Wednesdays and one Monday. Like EAR, he favored the month of May. We have theorized that he was a student, possibly a military officer in summer OTC, a valley farm kid, incarcerated during the gaps, offending elsewhere, etc. etc.

The gaps coinciding with transitions.....
could indicate that he was doing surveillance on the new areas he was about to start operating in, getting a feel of the surroundings etc. As for the longer gaps when he became ONS it could be that he was committing murders and he wanted to be more cautious and did not want the detectives to link the murders to the rapes (which could have caused a lot of heat), my reasoning is that as the murders occurred he started removing the murder weapons and the ligatures from the scene and possibly staging the crime scenes to make sure there was nothing to link EAR crimes

Yeah ,its very likely your suggestion is correct, it could also account for that there is nothing linked to the ONS after Cruz.

Let's compare the sequence of EAR/ONS gaps with the same exhibited by other serial offenders:

EAR/ONS:

2.5 months, 5 months, 5.5 months, 5 months, 5 years, 25 years of apparent inactivity

Dennis Rader:

3 months, 3 years, 9 months, 7.5 years, 1.5 years, 4.5 years, 14 years of dormancy before captured (at age 59).

Gary Ridgway:

1 week, 1 week, 1 week, 1.5 weeks, 1 day, 2.5 weeks, 2 weeks, 5 days, 6 days, 3 weeks, 1 day, 3 weeks, 1.3 months, 3 weeks, 2.5 months, 1 week, 1 month, 4 days, 3 days, 0 days, 2 weeks, 3 days, 2 weeks, 1 day, 1 week, 1 week, 1.5 weeks, 1 week, 3 weeks, 2.5 weeks, 1 week, 2 weeks, 2 weeks, 2 weeks, 4 days, 1 day...

and then: 2 months, 1.5 months, 1.5 months, 2.5 years, 4 months, 3 years, 8 years, 4 years of dormancy before captured (at age 52).

Ridgway and Rader are among only a few legitimate comparison points that come to mind, because both were (a) unapprehended for a long time, and speculated to have been dead or in prison due apparent inactivity, and (b) both were inconspicuous members of the community. with wives and children. At some point, I'll post graphs that correspond to these gaps, which also note significant events in the respective lives of Rader and Ridgway and their potential relationships to those gaps.

For instance, Ridgway first became a suspect in 1983, but wouldn't slow down significantly until 1984 (by which point, he was probably under close scrutiny). He met his third wife in 1985 and married her in 1988.

Rader's first child was born 7/27/1975. There were no BTK crimes between April 1974 and March 1977.

Rader's second child was born 6/13/1978. He did not offend between 12/8/77 and 4/27/85.

Timeline Gaps
SOE,

The EAR/ONS is truly a case for the criminal history books. Although it is unintentional, he has created one of the most perplexing series of crimes that I have come across. Because he was so prolific, one would have assumed that he would have been caught because of the sheer volume of his crimes (the ones we are sure about).

But that is what creates the problem of accurately producing a timeline of his activities. What is missing from the timeline is all of the EAR's other paraphilic activities. There are the possible and aborted burglaries. There are the prowler/peeper incidents and there are a handful of disputed EAR attacks.

To further complicate this are the other rapists and burglars, some of who purposely altered their crimes to "copycat" the EAR. Thankfully, most of them were caught. If I ever get a free stretch of time to just analyze all of these various possible EAR crimes, I could add them to the timeline. Then we would have a more complete picture of the EAR's activity through his criminal series.

I am still trying to track down accurate information on the 1975 case that was dropped from the list. There are a handful of disputed unsuccessful EAR attacks from early on. And I keep hearing about other burglaries that are believed to have been committed by the EAR. As usual, no specific dates/locations. At some point, I will try to provide you with some of this information but it comes from multiple sources such as magazine and newspaper articles, the tv programs as well as confidential sources (tons of emails through the years).

Going back and finding all of those bits of information is a big undertaking. Most of my time is spent chasing leads. I desperately want to switch from that to just analyzing the case.

There is a strong indication that the EAR was aware of Victim #1 as early as May of 1976. She believed that she was being watched. She was receiving hang-up phone calls prior to the June 18, 1976 attack. There was an EAR attack in June, July and August.

How do you read that in terms of the CSUS calendar year? His activity usually dropped off in the summer months.

Arch, the June 1976 attack and the events leading up to it constitute the one wrench in the CSUS theory. However, when I was in college, I was required to take at least 6 summer credits. I ultimately wound up doing three summers, as I lived on campus for two years and would have had to have vacated my campus housing during the summer if I wasn't enrolled during that semester. I attended school from 2002 to 2006, and not in California, so I have no idea what the protocols were at CSUS during that period. But this is one explanation.

Did anyone notice any attacks taking place at the end of November and the end of April as EAR. Usually those are final assignments or final exam preparation times for students at most Universities and Colleges.

Though I think this scale needs to be updated to the current century, it's likely this article has a lot of validity: It discusses Stressors and rates them from high to low. Here are the top two from a lengthy list for Non-adults:

I am also leaning towards your theory of there being a college connection to this guy in the 70s, because (a) it fits in with the gaps (b) it also helps to explain certain things about the EAR such he had free time in the nights and early morning hours, he also did break into some victims houses during daytime meaning he probably was somewere were he could go unaccountable for periods without arousing suspicion and college would be the perfect place! If you think about it college students can decide not to go to class and do whatever all day or night which probably for this guy would have been his rapes. The estimate of his age is also that of a young male (college age range ). This also leads me to think he wasn't in the police or army when the rapes occurred because given how prolific he was it would be difficult to go unaccounted for in those professions especially the army. The longer gaps as the ONS could also indicate that he now had responsibilities being now older had to balance time between his responsibilities and his double life.

if he indeed lived in the area and had a family, it's highly likely he could have seen her at Bullwinkle's.

Does anyone have any information or background on this attack? It is not described in Crompton's book, it is out-of-sequence (it was added to the list later, from what I gather), and there's no information on where it took place, other than Rancho Cordova.

4-6-78 Attack

SOE,

There is very little information about that possible attack. I got the first hint of it from one of the magazine articles. I can't remember whether it was the Sacramento Magazine article or the New West magazine article. Either way, the author of the article basically recounted a sequence of EAR attacks mentioning the months in which they occurred. He mentioned an attack in Rancho Cordova.

At some point, the SCSD stopped publicizing all of the EAR attacks. Sacramento had two competing newspapers back then. The Sacramento Bee and the Sacramento Union. One paper would have details that the other paper didn't. I suppose it depended upon the reporter.

In the Sacramento Union's article about the 4/14/78 attack on the babysitter in the south area (published on 4/16/78), it mentions that the EAR's last attack was on 4/6/78 in Rancho Cordova. Because it was also mentioned in that other magazine article, someone told both writers about that attack.

There are several other possible EAR attacks that never made it into the newspapers. There is disagreement as to whether they were actual EAR attacks or attacks committed by some other predator. I keep learning of new possibles but I have very little info on them so they are difficult to confirm.

CP,

The victims reported the crimes. It's just that the SCSD or SPD did not provide newspapers with that information. Part of the reason had to do with politics. Lowe was running for sheriff and he didn't want people reminded about the EAR. That is why the 1979 Rancho Cordova EAR attack never made it into the newspapers.

The Woman Who Saw "The East Area Rapist" In Broad Daylight

Hello, Mr. Archangel, sir.

Sir, I think I remember you talking about a woman who quite possibly saw The East Area Rapist.... I can't remember if you mentioned it or if it was in SUDDEN TERROR or both.........

I seem to recall an incident where there was a woman who saw Mr. EAR walking through her next door neighbor's property or something.... and she called out to him... she said something like, "Hey! You! Who are you? What are you doing?"

And The Mysterious Gentleman she saw, upon hearing her calling out to him, put his head down... and replied with, "I'm just passing through. Sorry."

If I remember correctly... the woman said the fella she saw was OBVIOUSLY trying to disguise his voice........

Does this sound familiar, Mr. Archangel, sir? I think it might be in Mr. Crompton's book, but I can't remember where... or perhaps it was you who brought it up......

In any case, I also remember this was an important eyewitness account because if that Mysterious Gentleman was in fact The East Area Rapist... this woman saw him in broad daylight and without his ski mask......

Unfortunately, San Ramon did not follow up. The composites are almost a moot point. None of them have produced a viable suspect either in the 1970's or now. I am finding out that there are almost too many composites and according to AK, they all look like TK.

It goes without saying that it would be wonderful to know the dates and locations of all the under- or un-reported EAR/ONS attacks, and to observe how that knowledge either challenges or bolsters currently plausible theories about where the EAR/ONS was living at specific points in time, and what he may have been doing in those places. I recall allusions to a number of unreported San Jose attacks (either in Crompton's book, or the forum—too preoccupied/lazy to double-check at the moment), confirmation of which would be interesting to say the least.

To Arch, To Port, To Anyone who might know
I would like to know if the woman who had a seemingly prolonged talk with the suspect that she encountered between her house and her neighbors, the one where he said he was looking at the roof regarding solar panels and she didn't believe him, the one where the next morning, the morning after the 6/24 attack, the one where the jacket was found on the walkway, did they get a composite from her; and if so, which composite/sketch was it? She was obviously speaking with him face to face, seemingly close by him and he had no ski mask on. That composite should carry a lot of weight in my opinion. Thanks, Sandia

Cat burglar strikes twice

FREMONT–A "cat burglar," so called because of his extraordinary stealth, paid a visit to two residents of the apartments at 42010 Blacow Rd. early yesterday, according to police.

The first victim was a 54-year-old woman whom he gagged and tied her hands with a telephone cord which he took from the victim's phone.

The burglar spoke very softly, even as he threatened to kill her if she screamed, the victim told police.

The burglar worked so quietly in the dark the victim wasn't sure when he left, taking $16 from her purse, the woman told police.

The victim managed to loosen the gag and called for help.

A man in a neighboring apartment unlied her, police said.

The second appearance of the burglar occurred 15 minutes after the first, at 4:55 a.m., when he was spotted outside the patio door of Murphy J. Hernandez in the same apartment complex.

Hernandez said he awakened to see the burglar trying to open his patio screen door. Hernandez turned on an outside light, and the burglar fled.

Thanks Mishmac. I did not know about that article. That very well could have been the reason. It would also explain him reoffending in Irvine in '86 (the one area no one seems to have suspected).
Of course since you said eight, I am assuming Irvine was not included. From everything I have seen, he succeeded in getting that one in under the radar. Somebody correct me if I am wrong there. I enjoyed reading your blog by the way. HJ2

HJ2: 1981, Cruz & NoCal/SoCal Transitional Period

Hi Hubert (HJ)--

We write whenever we can. You probably have some of your best thoughts at 0300--I know that I do.

No doubt there was some kind of life change that occurred to him around 1981--outside of a major life change, I don't think he would consciously choose to curb the pace he was operating at when he left NoCal--unless he was concerned with LE connecting NoCal to what would eventually unfold in SoCal. He liked what he did--the attacks were getting more brazen and more violent, and the detectives who had their suspicions early on were correct: it was only a matter of time before he started murdering his victims. If he did settle down at this point, then I'm of the opinion that it will be a family member who will crack the age old question of "who is EAR/ONS?"

HJ, when I first delved into this case in 2005, I originally believed that perhaps our perp was a weightlifter or a bodybuilder based upon the reports from Sacramento of him being muscular, but as I received more exposure to a myriad of sources, I came to the conclusion that he was more likely a runner or a swimmer--possibly pointing to HS/college athletics, military, LE training, etc. I still haven't quite settled on a definite answer to this question because I have to wonder how he managed to outrun and outmaneuver LE on multiple occasions if he was a cigarette smoker--and that in itself is another question: even though cigarette butts were found at crime scenes, and if I recall correctly, EAR victims had seen him smoking, was he actually a smoker, or was this more sleight of hand by EAR/ONS?

The Irvine murders stand out to me simply because of proximity--I don't believe that it's a coincidence that he struck in this fashion. He felt comfortable in Irvine, which suggests to me that either he lived in Irvine (I like this possibility very much) or he had family in Irvine. The Witthuhn homicide was an anomaly simply because he reverted back to a single female, and then as you mentioned, he doctored the scene to make it look like a burglary gone bad. I view that simply as him trying to distort LE from identifying his established MO and signature.

HJ, I too have a feeling that Cruz was a "spur of the moment" attack. How he encountered Janelle is unestablished, but I feel that he somehow encountered her through his daily travels in Irvine--not through any peeping/prowling. I agree with your thought on the capriciousness of that attack: he made noise; he was sloppy. Had Ms. Cruz and her male friend investigated those noises, I think it very likely it would have resulted in him probably shooting both of them. Although this too is undetermined, I believe he had a firearm on his person for the Cruz homicide. Prior to Cruz, he had been dormant for approximately five years: he was out of practice. By this time, he was approximately 30 years old. Somebody wrote a post back on the old board years ago about the body and how it changes from 20 to 30 years of age, especially when one doesn't stay physically active. If EAR/ONS wasn't an iron pumper or a runner and he started chowing down on the Twinkies, then he wasn't the lithe, agile EAR of NoCal infamy, and certainly in no condition to vault fences or outrun Orange County Blues. This should be taken into consideration; however, I think a more likely explanation lies here: if he lived in Irvine, he couldn't risk flight degenerating into a foot pursuit--the risk was too high, and I believe the only real fear EAR/ONS had was of his identity being established. This perp has family; he has people close to him, and he doesn't want them to know WHAT he really is. Identity is key here, and he has a history of choosing his battles very carefully. EAR/ONS has the kind of courage that would NEVER permit a fair fight, nor would he ever engage an opponent physically or mentally stronger than himself.

One other comment I'd like to make on the Cruz homicide, and forgive me for being graphic: I always wondered why he first struck Ms. Cruz in the back of the head while she was standing up, and why he chose, rather than to bludgeon her as he did his previous victims, to crush her face with a pipe wrench. That, to me, seems to make the murder even more personal. I don't think she was fleeing him--rather, I think she was simply walking in front of him as she had been instructed, and that bothers me immensely. That's the key: this murder screams personal--personal to him. Did he know Ms. Cruz personally? Had he been rebuffed by her? These are questions to think about.

I agree with you on that point, HJ. I think there are two explanations to why he evolved into a serial murderer: one, think about certain events in 1979 like the light-sleeping husband in Walnut Creek, CA (if memory serves me right; I don't have SUDDEN TERROR in front of me at the moment) that chased him off his property, and of course, Goleta 1 on 1 October 1979. What is the common denominator? He lost control of both scenes. Remember, prior to '79, he was The Big, Bad Notorious EAR and he had committed almost 50 rapes and countless burglaries/home invasions so he was feeling invincible. This was a matter of ego: he was furious with himself, and there was no way that he would EVER again lose control of a scene. Apply this thought to the established pattern he had of "scripting" his attacks: as one early EAR victim suggested in the 2003 SACRAMENTO MAGAZINE article, everything he did was scripted, and he stuck to his script with a demented dedication. Two, not only did the murder permit him a sick, but fulfilling satisfaction, I think it was merely a matter of utility: he wanted ZERO witnesses to identify him. Again, one thing that I noticed early on with this perp: he has always concealed his identity. It's more than a matter of getting caught: I truly believe he has people in his life (family) who love him and care about him, and it's this fear of these "loved ones" (I shudder just thinking the thought that a beast as soulless and pathetic as EAR/ONS actually has a family that cares for him) find out WHAT he really is that terrifies him more than anything else.

What happened in NoCal between circa 1974 and 1979 was pretty remarkable--though I'm not congratulating him. What he did was repulsive beyond words; however, he is one for the ages simply because he was such a prolific, cunning criminal, and it's imperative for the surviving victims and for the general public at large that he be identified, and if alive, arrested. When he relocated to SoCal, I am certain he was aware of the possibility of LE connecting his NoCal crimes to anything performed in SoCal, and this is why he escalated to homicide (eliminate witnesses without compromising his identity). It disgusts me to think that he was probably laughing his head off when he read that Santa Barbara dismissed the possibility of EAR having moved south.

I'll write some more a bit later--this was more lengthy than I thought it would be. Thoughts just unravel as they do.

I think the fear of his loved ones finding out was at the top of his list. I remember watching the interview with the "Ice Man" hit man. From memory his family finding out visibly disturbed him. He could care less about much else.

This could very well be the case. Even though LE was not in agreement regarding the possibility of whether the cases were linked, ONS of course knew they were. This probably rattled him a little b/c every one of those cases mentioned in the article were actually committed by him, despite his best efforts in removing ligatures and altering his m.o. I bet this caused him to cool off a bit, because he probably didn't think that anyone would even consider a connection given the great distances, etc. between some of the crimes. However, he did notice that one of his victims was not mentioned - Manuela Witthuhn. Why? Because it did not involve a couple. I think that the fact that Witthuhn was not mentioned gave him the idea that if he was going to commit anymore murders, they would no longer involve couples.

LS1 always good to see you posting. You're probably right about the newspaper subscriptions. and at the shock EAR/ONS could have felt at seeing that someone had begun to put the pieces together.

What seems clear to me is he feared this connection because he feared it could lead to him. I think this for many reasons. What it was exactly about someone connecting the murders (and EAR crimes) he was scared of is of course the key. My hunch is there is (or unfortunately maybe was) some small detail (it might have to be small) that could only be seen looking at the whole picture: EAR/ONS knew it was there and knew, no matter how remote the possibility, that if spotted things could start to unravel for him. As AE7 said, it could have been a fear of a person close to him putting it together as much as a fear of LE. Regardless, it has escaped notice thus far.

Though I hesitate to bring him up, I think the Zodiac stopped because of his fear of getting caught. The Stine murder was a disaster for him: he was seen by a group of teenagers, possibly by the police, and most likely left fingerprints at the crime scene. People theorize he committed scores more murders but the Fact is no murders after Stine can be connected to him. Whatever drove him to do what he did was overcome by the very real possibility of being caught (though he did continue to write letters for a few more years on and off).

Disclaimer: I am not comparing EAR/ONS and Zodiac - they are two very different killers. I am just pointing out what I believe is an example of a serial killer stopping for fear of getting caught. Why do I sense an AKwilks post with all the pics coming?

Ha ha, I will spare you the pics.

I think you make a good point. Killers can change aspects of their MO, and they can stop in response to events, such as almost being caught.

Also, EAR/ONS wouldn't have to have multiple newspaper subscriptions, he could just go to any campus library and all the major California papers would be available to look at.

This sounds like an "inmature" EAR. The gag, the binding, threat to kill, thief, darkness in the room. If this was EAR as a teen, he moved from apartments to residences, and of course stepped up the rest: own bindings, weapons, mask, and flashlight.

This does seem like a stupid risk for a $16.00 gain. Fifteen minutes between burglaries!? He must've thought Victim I was still tied up. Next time. . .tighter bindings!

Too, before the EAR and ONS were linked, people may have thought of EAR as the Sac. Rapist or Northern California Rapist; and ONS as the SoCal Rapist. Once the link was made, EAR/ONS knew there was a probability that family members and others might make the connection. So perhaps he moved out of state or just went underground.

No one thought of the ONS as anything. Aside from the odd speculative newspaper article and the links among the three Goleta scenes, the linkages among the ten Southern CA were under-the-radar and not established until the late 90s (and not made public until 2000).

Distinguishing features of the Cruz homicide

Someone please correct me if I am mistaken: in all the other ONS homicides (Goleta plus DNA-linked), strange happenings such as prowlers and unlocked dead bolts were reported by residents in the immediate vicinity of the crimes. But not in the Cruz case.

Where I'm going with this is, I've long suspected that Cruz was targeted a little less randomly than the other victims, and that the EAR-ONS may have been acquainted with Cruz on some level.

What other features of the Cruz homicide might reinforce this possibility?

Did Cruz live there with her mother? If so, could the killer have known her mother was in Mexico when he struck?

I agree with you SOE. I believe it has been said here that Janelle was very friendly and had many male friends. She was, apparently, a waitress at a Pizza parlor for a while. If she was an extroverted and friendly waitress, I do not think it would have been unusual for her to reveal to a flirtatious customer, that she had to stay home to work, etc. but her mom and stepfather were going on vacation in Mexico, or something to that effect. Perhaps EARONS was a customer? Maybe he checked in on her from time to time, becoming more and more obsessed with his fantasies. I think her job as a waitress would have enabled a psychopath like EARONS to have easy access to her, and would have allowed him to engage in conversation with her. This would fuel his fantasies. All he would need was to wait for the right opportunity to carry them out.

Bullwinkle's Restaurant

Janelle Cruz worked as a cashier at Bullwinkle's Restaurant, which was located at 14100 Culver Drive in Irvine (off the I-5 on-ramp).

Let's assume, for a moment, that the EAR-ONS first encountered Cruz at Bullwinkle's while patronizing the restaurant, perhaps with his family. This assumption is not necessary to consider the following, but it makes it more compelling.

The linear (not walking or driving) distance from Bullwinkle's restauant to the Cruz residence is 1.28 miles. The linear distance from the Cruz residence to the Witthuhn residence is... 1.28 miles. The linear distance of Bullwinkle's to the Witthuhn residence is 1.11 miles.

The three points are almost equidistant, forming an almost perfect equilateral triangle.

Did the EAR-ONS reside somewhere within that triangle?

I also agree with you. There has always just been something different about the Cruz case. It is said that when a victim is bludgeoned in the face, it denotes more of a personal attack associated with extreme anger than being bludgeoned in the back of the head-indicating more of an impersonal attack We also know that Cruz was first struck in the back of the head as she was walking away from ONS. My guess as in what happened from there is that he moved her to the bedroom and commenced his sexual assault followed by the bludgeoning. I remember some speculating that Cruz might have rolled over during the attack, causing her face to be bludgeoned. However, I don't think that this was the case. From what I understand the majority of the wounds were to her face (teeth knocked out, etc). No other victims to my knowledge were found this way. I think that ONS's m.o. is also interesting in this case: He attacks a little earlier than usual- he doesn't wait until she is asleep, either waits for the boyfriend to leave or the boyfriend just has excellent timing, face bludgeoning, hides in the house and ambushes her, her mother just happens to be out of town for the week, no prowler reports that I'm aware of, and not to mention he has not attacked in almost 5 years.

I think that there is an extremely likelihood that EAR worked or lived in a couple square miles of the crime scenes in the Irvine area. By 1986 it had been 5 years since his last documented murder. He had proven to himself time and time again that he could offend and get away with it. At this time he would have been in his early to mid 30's, had a steady relationship with a woman and perhaps even a family. By this stage in his life he certainly would not be driving hours away or spending late nights hopping over fences and prowling through neighborhoods. His compulsion to rape and kill had lessesnd through the years as is the natural progression of the male sex drive and violent impulses. However, he wanted one last kill to prove to himself that he still could do it whenever he chose to. No doubt he took his time very carefully on Janelle, much more than the other killings or rapes. I believed that it was not random and that he knew of her somehow whether at her place of employment or some type of neighborhood association. This was a time before DNA and he had know way of knowing that this attack would ever be connected to his other crimes so long ago. This made him feel quite comfortable in attacking so close to home. Janelle was a pretty young woman he must have thought. She must have attracted scores of young men and he knew the police would spend all their time on the assumption that it was a young jealous lover. After the murder he wanted that newspaper, (he needed) that newspaper delivered to his home with all the grisly details. There was no taking a chance on being too far away on this one. His script which no doubt he had practiced over and over again "Oh how awful, she was so young, how could this have happened in our own neighborhood!! I am sure his spouse heard something like this. He wanted to hear about the mureder on TV, the newspaper, the local women gossiping about it at the local supermarket. If this was going to be his last time playing GOD he was going to get all it was worth. After BTK was captured it was learned in the later part of his life he killed someone right on his own street. I think BTK and EAR are very similar.

Bullwinkles is a franchise; and where as it serves pizza it is a kids' place, along the lines of Chucky Cheese. (I've been past both but haven't eaten at either fwiw.)
Caspian (being true to its name) is a Persian restaurant.

what you posted hadn't occurred to me but i think it's an excellent observation. you might be really be onto to something here. there's definitely a difference. now that i read your post i am kicking myself for not realizing what you did: he dropped a significant part of his mo (that he had used since 1976) for this crime. did he have to? was the previous way of doing things no longer practical as conquistador said? my bet is it was (for whatever reason - home life, physical condition).

another difference (correct me if i'm wrong)i believe i read (or heard on one of the programs) while she had marks from being restrained she did not have the ligature marks of other victims. if this is accurate, it is another big deviation from his mo. i might be wrong on this. anybody know?

I am still not sold on Visalia. The rape routine he had down pat. What did he say to the Visalia attempted abduction victim? What he said in the abduction attempt therein lies the key on that sequence of events of whether they are the one and the same.

My thought before the book was published and now especially after getting into several of the rapes, Visalia and Sac are not one in the same. The Rape routine is TOO rehearsed. Too much of the same mannerisms, speech, routine, B&E...etc That only comes with doing it before but the "First" victim too me sounds more like his 5th-10th victim.

Was anyone paroled around that time and had to go back to stay with Mommy?

My thoughts about the VR aspect, was this -- he learned not to attack a daughter while the father was at home -- we see what happened at the Snelling attack -- father came to the rescue and if VR didn't have a gun, he probably would have taken one heck of a beating.

In the Sac attacks, at least those first few (I am rereading this book in chronological order presently) I notice he is scrupulous about making sure Daddy is not home when he strikes. Add to the fact he uses restrainsts, gags, blindfolds, to keep the females as immobile and quiet as possible.

As you pointed out though -- it would be interesting to see if any sex offenders with a similiar m.o. were paroled in the year prior to June 1976.

Beware! Don't look for the exact M.O. but similar in technique, stalking, and theft needs. The reason behind me saying "... the exact M.O...". is because you probably will not find that particular M.O. and primarily because he got caught influencing him to learn and adapt. Therefore, look for someone with the same voice, shoe size, and A+ blood typing and similar M.O. He would change his M.O. to assure him not getting caught again. He would of had a long time in prison, juvenile, or a mental hospital to think on how to perfect his techniques. Then when he was released he was: Rehearsed, sequenced, affirmative, and felt confident. And of course, luck plays on his side but even when talking military tactics, luck is a consideration.



Speaking of mental institutions, he could have been on weekend fulows that allowed him to stalk and kill JC. Do NOT overlook the mental ward and think of those places as a 100% secure facility. Although I even think the mental ward scenerio unlikely, it is a great guise.

The Visalia cases are strikingly similiar to the EAR cases. The type of items taken, the lubricant and masturbation. the screens removed and placed, photographs taken or moved, one earring, cheap jewelry, ransacking female undergarments and the list goes on and on. I am convinced they are the same individual. It is fitting of the gradual development from a peeper to a rapist serial killer in my opinion. g

I don't think this has been addressed yet, hence the thread.

Three or four victims' accounts in Crompton's book reported that he occasionally stuttered. Do you think the EAR-ONS was a stutterer? Is it possible that he whispered through clenched teeth not, or not only, to disguise his voice or be scarier, but because it was a manner of speech that minimized stuttering? Or do you think the stuttering was calculated, another effort toward misdirection?

Liar and Disinformation

The following are just random scattershot opinions on various things

Mr. EAR-ONS said... some of what he said might actually have been

true..... let's not forget, Ted Bundy did use his REAL first name

Mr. EAR-ONS asked Victim #15, a 16 year old girl, how she liked his

Victim #15 said Mr. EAR-ONS' penis felt like a hot dog.



Going back to Victim(s) #18 for a second... this was also the attack

in which Mr. EAR-ONS mentioned he was "thrown out" of the Service -



The fact the Mr. EAR-ONS was so willing to divulge this information

has to at the very least be greeted with some mild

skepticism... again, he may have been in the Service and thrown out...

but at the same time I have a hard time believing he would volunteer

this information.... I'm thinking 75% LIE... 25% Possible Truth To It.

John Douglas actually profiled that the killer would have a stutter!He said this was due to the blitz type attacks suggesting that the killer was not confident enough to engage his victims in conversation because of a speech 'disability'.

Although Carpenter attacked in isolated areas (posing as a rambler) where even if he did run into anyone, he could probably just smile, nod or wave and walk on; whereas EAR-ONS did his stalking/re-con in places where he probably had to talk his way out of tricky situations a few times.
I can imagine EAR-ONS being spotted and asked what the hell he was doing, and replying that he was looking for his dog or something like that.There is one report of a man who may well have been EAR-ONS claiming when confronted that he was waiting for his friend (before running away). No mention of a stutter...A stutter is a 'hidden disability'; nobody can tell by just looking at a person whether they stutter. I think that EAR-ONS' 'hidden disability' may well have been his small penis - witnesses and possible witnesses describe a well built, athletic guy of normal height and the composites all indicate a fairly good looking guy IMO. Add to this the likelihood that EAR-ONS probably needed the 'gift of the gab', and the fact that he was very athletic and we really reduce the possible disabilities/disfigurements/physical insecurities (stuttering, bad acne, cleft palate, club foot etc etc) down to one: his small, unreliable member!Maybe this was infact a reason for him attacking the way he did - smart, athletic, good looking guy but knew that (whilst he was attractive to girls) he couldn't follow up his initial impressiveness if things became intimate in a traditional girl/boy way.

I think that you are spot on. I read the trutv article on David Carpenter and found it interesting that he was married twice and had three children. My point is this if he could court and marry twice isn't it likely that the EAR could of had a family as well. The article also points out that Mr. Carpenter held a job and managed to appear normal to most of the people he interacted with.

I'm sure that EAR-ONS also appeared to be very normal (one of the reasons he has avoided capture) and wouldn't be surprised if he has a wife/girlfriend and possibly children.
Carpenter's stutter clearly didn't prevent him from forming relationships once people got to know him - but it would have prevented him talking his way out of a tricky situation with strangers.Perhaps EAR-ONS became a family man once he got a bit older and past his insecurities...having kids would certainly be a way of showing the world that he was a real man.If EAR-ONS is alive today then I would expect him to probably be a Dennis Rader type pillar of the community, either (like Rader) living in one of his old hunting grounds, or relocated to a small, close-knit community where he knows local police and is possibly in a position of some authority - reducing his chances of ever being arrested for a minor offence and having his dna taken.I'm sure that EAR-ONS was terrified when he found out about dna (became known to the public around 1986 - last known EAR-ONS crime also 1986) and has tried to minimise the likelihood of ever having to give a sample by taking on (or maintaining) an 'above suspicion' persona. If he has kids, I'm sure he lives in fear of one of them being arrested one day and familial dna leading back to him (which of course happened recently with the Grim Sleeper).

If Mr. EAR-ONS eventually got married and had children, I would imagine his
wife would be small, quiet, extremely shy and introverted, easily manipulated,
quick to be subservient to Mr. EAR-ONS.... I don't know why I think that, but
I just do...... makes sense considering my opinion that Mr. EAR-ONS probably has
an Inferiority Complex, low self-esteem about himself physically, you know
what I mean?

I would imagine he would have to find a woman who he could trust not to laugh
at him.... someone who would be flawed in her own way..... he'd depend on her

Manipulator
In having read Det. Cromptons book I see the ear-ons as a manipulator who knew what to say to the victims to send the investigation and the press in the wrong direction. He may have led the police to believe he had a van which he mentioned to most victims. I believe he wanted people to think he was poor or homeless as to the references to "all I want is food and money". I believe he scratched on the screens as to see if anyone was awake ( a person would hear the noise if awake but quiet enough not to wake them) or if their was a big dog in the house the sound would make it bark. I feel the ear-ons was a Vietnam Vet (which would put him in the right age range) who was attending college in the area on the G.I. Bill. I am not a betting man but would be willing to say he went into Medicine or Law and resides in the L.A. area where he did his last crimes.

Because he only stuttered at some of the attacks it may have been another ploy to throw off the police. That way they would be looking for a homeless person, driving a van who stuttered. When in reality he was probably well to do, sipped on coctails and drove a mercedes. The guy had to be somewhat cunning not to have been caught. All anyone can hope for is that he has offsprings who will sometime make a mistake and have their DNA checked as in the Grim Sleeper case.

What about Bonnie??
In the book when the victim stated he was crying and was saying "Bonnie" has anyone considered checking Visalia area and Sacramento area death records to see if a woman or girl named Bonnie in the ear-ons age range died within a year before the the attacks in that area started? Possibly the assaults on the victims brought back the memory of a deceased girlfriend and that is why he cried. Just a thought...

Medicine or Law??
In regard to Floater's theory that our suspect might have gone into Medicine or Law is completely unfounded. Most likely EAR was blue collar, janitor, security guard etc. Every lawyer and doctor I have ever met were generally overachievers and had an abundance of self esteem. I believe EAR committed these crimes becasue he had no self esteem, due to the lack of achievement, professionally or in his personal life. The crimes were his way of proving to himself that he was as good as them or better. But you know Floater maybe you are right maybe our suspect was committing murder, rape, burglaries, casing homes, beating to death dogs, running from the FBI on stolen bicycles in between his Organic Chemisty classes and his Residency.

I agree with you completely. I am actually finishing up my final semester of law school so I feel somewhat qualified to comment on this subject. I don't discount the possibility that EAR was a college student (based on the timeline), however, getting into a professional program such as medical school or law school requires great undergrad grades, then there's the lsat or mcat. Even if EAR was a student, there is little chance that he would able to excell in his undergrad studies given the amount of time he devoted to his "extra-cirricular activities."

Nevertheless, Ted Bundy was able to pull it off- graduating with a degree in psychology from the University of Washington and was admitted to law school at the University of Utah...but he did not graduate...his compulsion got the better of him.

I do see EAR as an overachiever when it came to committing crimes, but not in the professional field. I'm not discounting his intelligence, because let's face it, when it came to committing these crimes and elluding LE, his tactics and strategies were brilliant. He was very good at exploiting and taking advantage of LE's weaknesses. For instance, parking a few blocks away from the scene, going through backyards, ski mask, gloves, different jurisdictions, etc. He knew how LE operated and he also knew how to counter their operations. It just amazes me how "lucky" this guy really was. Could this be a coincidence? 50 times? He possessed the confidence to know that he would not get caught as long as he stuck to his m.o. Where did this confidence come from? How was he able to casually walk away from an attack (where the victims just ran to the house next door ) and down the street with no pants? Why was he not worried? He seemed to have this attitude that he was safe- a sense of indestructability. Did he know what section of town LE was monitoring?

What is also interesting to me is how he hit the ground running when he burst onto the scene. I also don't buy that he was a teenage kid either when he committed the EAR rapes. He had the perfect m.o. and it did not deviate much from it. He outsmarted LE over and over and over again. The number is almost ridiculous. Reading ST was starting to get redundant and ridiculous. How can someone offend that many times right under LE's nose and they still do not have one solid suspect? Do people really believe that this was a teenager? No teenager would be that sophisticated. He learned from experience.

If he is still alive, I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn out as something similar to Dennis Rader as a code compliance officer or something to that effect. These people are fascinated with LE and EAR's m.o. leads me to believe that he was no exception. -LS1

My intent in saying Medicine or Lawyer was to get the point across that after going to So. California he began to slow down the attacks. If he were a student and attended classes of this type it would take more of his time to concentrate on studies. Why did he slow down? Injury, more intense studies, having met a women and started a family or did he die? As lawstudent1 said about Ted Bundy, he was able to pull off his crimes. If we knew who or what he was he would probably be in jail. We don't know though and have to keep an open mind until we do. Your right that he could be doing any type of job if he is still alive. My intent was not to offend but to suggest possibilities.

The Janelle Cruz homicide, the

Perhaps the most compelling account I came across in the old forums was [allegedly] posted by the boyfriend of Janelle Cruz at the time of her death.

His post reported of an encounter with Janelle at a neighborhood pool approximately a week before death. He wrote of the presence of another man at the swimming pool whose gaze upon Janelle had a "sexually predatory" manner about it, and how the man offered to drop by her home to show her some kittens for the purpose of her possibly adopting them.

If this account is correct, the probability is good that the "kitten man" was EAR-ONS.

It had been over five years since the last known EAR-ONS homicide. It is reasonable to suppose that the EAR-ONS moved to Southern California to settle there (as well as to escape EAR heat). After the initial murders, his life became a more domestically settled one, and increased relationship stability coupled with decreased free time and solitary time, made continued crimes both less interesting and more logistically difficult (case in point: Gary Ridgway, who committed the bulk of his crimes—55 of 59 known or suspected murders—while single. After he met and married his wife, he committed only two known murders, with an additional two suspected ones).

In addition, if you look at Dennis Rader (who, in my opinion, may be the best reference point for ONS, of any apprehended serial offender), one of his victims (Marine Hedge) lived on the same block as Rader and his family. If the "kitten man" story is true, and the "kitten man" is the EAR-ONS, it's pretty possible that EAR-ONS lived in the same development as Cruz. His homicidal designs on her probably began upon his first encounter with her at the pool, prior to which he had no immediate plans to commit another crime (and for all that's known, has not committed one since). He gave in to compulsion and committed perhaps the riskiest of all his murders, given the proximity of his residence to that of the victim. Injury to her face, which was exclusive in her case, implies the likelihood of her killer having been previously acquainted with her, or knowing her better than he knew the other victims.

Cruz lived within a one or two mile radius (I believe) of the previous victim, Manuela Witthuhn (1981). So, there's a good chance he maintained the same residence from before that date (February 5, 1981) through after May 4, 1986.

It's also possible that the EAR-ONS was acquainted, in some way, with Witthuhn. I vaguely recall reading some reference to this at the old board. If so, it's also possible that the killer lived in the Witthuhn neighborhood and was merely a frequent visitor to the Cruz neighborhood, perhaps having friends or family there, thus explaining his usage of the pool. It's unlikely, given the location of the pool in the center of this development (check it out on Bing, Google Maps, or Google Earth), that the "kitten man" did not have some strong ties to that neighborhood.

Either way, here's what I'm working toward:

There must be some way to determine the inhabitants of every resident within a 1-mile radius of Cruz (and/or Witthuhn), at the time of her murder (1986). The current residents of these neighborhoods can be determined with varying accuracy by performing reverse lookups on each address via whitepages.com. I did this for a while, cross-referencing the other known residences (by city) of each occupant via ussearch.com. This quickly became tedious, and I realized it was probably a wasteful endeavor, as it would be more fruitful to have access to contemporaneous residents as opposed to current ones (most of which are 50 years of age and older, so that suggests a possibility that EAR-ONS still lives there).

Assuming some resourceful individual were able to access these records, they could then, as I did, research the other known cities of residence of each individual (using some better method than the free search at ussearch.com or Intelius), until a list emerged of people whose geographic activity closely matches that of the EAR-ONS. And then, additional research can be done until an offender, or offenders, become compelling enough to present to LE.

Hi Bear,
It would be interesting to know if those offices were there then. There were alot of medical connections in the EAR cases and oviously in ONS as well. There were victims who were nurses, nursing students, daughters or wives of doctors and in some of the outside Sac attacks victims worked at a hospital. I'm glad to see you are still here and working on the case.

I am of the opinion that this was his last hurrah so to speak...he was either testing himself to see if he still "had it" or wanted to commit one more rape and murder for old times sake before quitting the game so to speak. I think so because of the huge time between the previous homicide and the Cruz homicide. I agree with Speakel that probably he had no intention of further hits and then gave in to some strong urges after encountering Janelle, he probably had some fixation with her after seeing her.

I heard they put the deceased on the bottom of the pile but I don't know that as a fact. I hate to give the guy too much credit, a lot of errors by police and the public might be why he didn't get caught but he might have been smart enough to move to another state, country? or did his luck run out and did he get himself killed. He might not be that smart, but smart enough to not brag.
He may have moved to another location after stopping because if you read that poem he sent there is a line about going to exile.......

This case has been looked at from all angles from all sorts of investigators since 1976 (maybe even 1974). They've looked at so many different theories, investigated so many suspects. Part of the problem with the investigation is Mather AFB. There was such a huge transient population of military personnel and dependents that it's the "needle in the haystack" situation. On top of that, you had the post-Vietnam situation. A lot of disillusioned, disaffected vets (you no doubt remember when Saigon fell in 1975). A lot of people dealing with a lot of very deep wounds both physical as well as psychological. The irony: I do not think the EAR was one of them but a lot of these guys are being presented as suspects by the unknowing public.

Zeroing on a suspect under those circumstances...well, you see how far we got with that. Investigators have looked for any patterns, any connections between victims and any connections to real estate, construction, the military, postal workers, meter readers, pizza delivery men, newspaper delivery boys as well as the usual neighborhood weirdo. Even cops were suspected of being the EAR.

The public called in everyone you could think of (except the EAR). Boyfriends, husbands, sons, neighbors, co-workers, etc. At the height of the hysteria, they had over 5,000 suspects. I forget how many suspects Inv. Pool looked at, I think over 10,000. CODIS has searched through over 1.5 million. And still no match.

My own belief (at this point in the investigation) is that there is some witness out there who does not yet realize they are a witness. The investigators kept so much pertinent information from the public. 30+ years later, this pertinent information is now going to be revealed in Det. Crompton's book. So, the next step is making sure that as many people in Sacramento and other affected areas know about the book and read the book. We need to reach people who lived in the areas at the time but moved away.

Someone is going recognize that belt buckle or read about the yellow step-side pickup or read the EAR's poem and say, I know who that is (ironically like David Kaczyinski when he read the Manifesto). That's my take for what it's worth.

So the most important thing that any of us can do at this poiint is get the word out about Det. Crompton's book. And that is something that all of us can do.
The point about detectives keeping pertinent information away from the public is interesting because I believe if the investigators at the time of the crimes had released a bit of information about what this guy liked to say during the rapes or when he reached a climax during the rape it probably would have led to a tip from this guys girlfriend/ex girlfriend or a person he had consenting sex with (paid or unpaid) and would probably would have lead to a tip that would end with cops on his doorstep!

What I find odd...
is that of all the times for ONS to attack Janelle, he did so when her family was on vacation. Same with Manuela Witthuhn when her husband was hospitalized that night. Could be coincidence, but sometimes it appears that maybe he was closer to the Irvine victims than we think. Of all the murders committed by ONS, Cruz and Witthuhn were the only ones who were alone.

However, knowing that Domingo/Sanchez are now DNA tied to this guy blows the theory that he was scared of confronting males with their partners after the previous Goleta attack. Says to me that Manuela was attacked without him knowing her husband would be gone.

I see what your saying AlexA, but my theory is not based on the premise that he is afraid to attack males. It was based on the assumption that he lived in Irvine. If he committed single homicides in Irvine, they probably would not be connected to the other murders. If he committed doubles in Irvine, using his familiar M.O., everyone would know he was there and probably had been there for quite some time. It was published in the papers after the Harrington murders that LE was trying to determine if the Harrington murder and the Smith murder were connected because both involved slain couples in bed who were bludgeoned to death. The next murder he commits is Maneula's and he stages the crime scene to resemble a burglary. Why? Many of us on this board believe that ONS lived in Irvine from 1980-1986 (and possibly still to this day); it just seems odd that both of the Irvine victims were killed when they happened to be alone.

Well, he still continued to also attack lone females well into his EAR/couples attacker persona. so why not alternate when it seemed fit as ONS?

Though I'm of the belief he was simply older and sloppier and less organized for his last 3 known attacks. Maybe we hasn't able to peep and prowl quite so much in Irvine, and with Cruz, he simply didn't manage to get into the house until the male had left (the striking of Janell on the back of the head, I believe, occurred as she was walking down the hall to her room after saying goodnight to her friend). All in all, his last attacks were bummers and he was losing his drive and steam.

Pretty obvious to me at least that EAR/ONS didn't care if there was a man in the house or not as long as he could catch the couple in their sleep. Once he developed the MO of attacking couples (Because Sac LE and the media challenged him by saying he attacked only women) it was irrelevant to him who was in the house. The time he couldn't gain control because the husband was a light sleeper and confronted him he * his pants and ran away.

LOL ...like the way you described the events , nearly cracked my ribs laughing, the funny thing is apparently that husband was naked when he hollered and chased after the EAR! Totally agree with the last point

Likely cities of residence - latest thoughts

At some point last year, I submitted a post discussing the patterns of attacks once the East Area Rapist left Sacramento for good, and where I hypothesized his residence(s) may have been during that period.

Having looked at this case a lot more closely since, I have some clearer opinions on where I think the EAR may have lived.

First, I'll summarize.

Origins: San Joaquin County—Stockton or outlying cities
1974–1975: Visalia (only if EAR/ONS and the Visalia Ransacker are the same perp)
1976–May 1978: Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, Fair Oaks, or Citrus Heights, in descending order of likelihood (with summers and winter holidays spent in San Joaquin)
June 1978–August 1978: San Joaquin County
August 1978–August 1979: San Ramon
August 1979–August 1980: Goleta
August1980–May 1986 or later: Irvine

San Joaquin:
The EAR's first non-Sacramento attack was on 9/6/77. This was one year and three months into his career as the East Area Rapist. He was growing more sophisticated, yet not as sophisticated as he'd be an additional year later, when he was offending in Modesto one day and Davis the next. I believe that the EAR was a student at California State University, Sacramento. Attack #23 occurred in the early morning hours (between 1am and 2am) on Tuesday 9/6/77, which was the first day of instruction at CSUS (as previously noted by Portofleith). I would guess that the EAR hit the highway (the I-5 on-ramp was under a mile from the scene) immediately after leaving the scene, and expected he'd be in Sacramento (an hour to the north) before his victims even escaped from their bonds. The EAR had likely spent his summer here.

After leaving Sacramento in summer of 1978, the EAR did not reoffend in Stockton, but rather, spent three weeks pendulating between Modesto and Davis, striking twice in each location. I believe the EAR was "back" in Stockton at this point, not wanting to announce where he was living by striking there.

San Ramon:
It's hard to say exactly when the EAR moved to Contra Costa, but my guess is August, in keeping with the notion of applying one-year windows (for one year leases) to each of his phases between Sacramento and Orange County, where he evidenced longer-term residences. Moving to Contra Costa in August would also have allowed him ample time to either attempt and fail to keep his impulses in check, and/or to become comfortable enough with his new environment to begin striking. His first known offense in Contra Costa occurred in Concord on 10/7/78. He would offend there once more, six days later, and then hit San Ramon, which would be his sole offense in that city proper.

I suspect, at this point, that the EAR was polished enough to not make his Contra Costa debut in the city in which he was living, as this may have seemed like announcing his new residence. Furthermore, he offended as far South as San Jose, which is 55 miles from Concord, but only 39 miles from San Ramon. Concord, meanwhile, is 17 miles north of San Ramon.

There are two potential parallels in Concord to the Modesto/Davis pattern. First, if we assume that the EAR was living in Stockton during the Modesto/Davis period, then Davis is 60 miles from Stockton, while Modesto is 30. The San Jose/Concord distances from San Ramon present a similar number: 39/17. More significantly, in the final month of his Contra Costa phase, he adopted another pendulating pattern: Walnut Creek, Danville, Walnut Creek, Danville. He may have initially intended to pendulate between a broader distance (Concord and San Jose) as he did in 6/78, but was deterred by some unknown factor.

An alternate possibility for Contra Costra is that he lived in a city in which there were no EAR offenses. Alamo and Lafayette are two good possibilities, in my mind.

Goleta:
Ignoring the small possibility that the Goleta crimes were committed by another, unrelated perpetrator, I believe the EAR moved here ca. August and fully intended to begin leaving no survivors, and therefore was not concerned about any future crimes being connected to his "East Area Rapist" series. That being the case, he likely didn't feel that to offend here while living here would represent any announcement, to LE, of an EAR relocation. I suspect he lived very near the Queen Ann Lane attack, and likely somewhere within the area bordered by Cathedral Oaks Rd. to the south, Cambridge Dr. to the west, and the curving N. Patterson Ave to the north and east. Having failed in this initial attack, I feel he branched out further to the south, but still working within a tight geographic radius.

From Goleta to Ventura is 43 miles, a distance not dissimilar to those the EAR would travel in his post-Sac period. The period of time between his last Contra Costa strike (7/5/79) and his first Orange County strike (8/19/80) was one year, one month, and two weeks, long enough to have lived in Goleta for one year, the period of the typical rental lease.

One alternate and quite viable possibility is that he was living with family or friends in Goleta. Another possibility is that he didn't live in Goleta at all, but returned to offend there to misdirect LE into looking for a "local." If the latter was the case, then I might guess that he may not have offended there a second time if he'd have killed his first two victims as intended. He may have lived anywhere else in Santa Barbara County, or in Ventura County. Of all the Southern CA crimes, those in Goleta were the only ones that were obviously likable as a series, to contemporaneous LE investigators.

Irvine:
The two crimes committed in Irvine were single homicides of lone women, five years apart. By this time, the EAR/ONS was likely very familiar with investigative techniques and likely understood that not only would these crimes not be linked to his doubles in Goleta, Ventura, and Dana Point, but likely also not to each other. With Goleta, the proximity of the three scenes begs the obvious conclusion that the offender lived nearby. The obviousness that these three scenes were linked allows for the alternate hypothesis that the offender did not live in Goleta and was traveling there to misdirect local LE. However, the two Irvine homicides do not allow for a similar hypothesis. These two crimes, though similar, were not linked until forensic science connected them to a common DNA profile. In May 1986, DNA profiling as a crime-solving tool was still unheard of and would not be implemented anywhere in the world until autumn 1987, in England. Therefore, given the very close proximity of the Witthuhn and Cruz homicides, and the fact that the perpetrator likely never anticipated either would be linked to any other murder, I believe it's almost concrete that the EAR/ONS lived or worked in Irvine, specifically the Northwood community (zip code: 92620).

His Dana Point murders of the Harringtons were similar enough to the Ventura and Goleta crimes to invite immediate speculation of a link, and the EAR/ONS likely anticipated this. Therefore, to commit a double in Irvine would have been tantamount to "announcing" his new location. Dana Point is 23 miles from the Northwood area of Irvine, a distance the EAR/ONS had traveled previously.

I believe the EAR/ONS lived somewhere within these red borders:

Brilliant post S.O.E and food for thought...do you think that it was in any way possible that EAR-ONS never left the San Joaquin area, and that his later murders were 'road trips'?


I know this seems unlikely, but I have seen this theory suggested on the boards and could be possible if EAR-ONS was independently wealthy/had no regular job where he would be missed, and had a submissive wife who asked no questions etc etc.

I favour your theory, but was just wondering if you thought it at all possible that EAR-ONS was a Dennis Rader type who lived in one location all along...

Anything is possible, though I think that scenario is highly improbable. Rader lived in one location, and offended in one location (Sedgwick County, KS). The only serial offenders who really offend, repeatedly, so far from home are long-haul truckers and rootless drifter types. I don't think the EAR/ONS was either.

The theory that the EAR/ONS remained in Northern CA and drove to Southern CA to commit all those offenses is predicated on the notion that he did so in order to throw off authorities. Keep in mind, the shift in M.O. and the various differences in the Southern CA crimes between both the EAR series and each other did not make a connection evident to law enforcement, and the EAR/ONS knew this. He did not expect EAR and Southern CA to be linked. He was not aware of DNA profiling (it didn't yet exist) and couldn't have anticipated that, fifteen years after his last known crime, the full breadth of his offenses would be known and published.

In my opinion with the exception of Rancho Cordova/East Sac EAR/ONS never lived where he offended. Nearby yes, just over a city limit, yes but not where he was in the jurisdiction where he struck.Except for the series in Sac he was two or three and out in every other jurisdiction. I still think there's a reason he offended 15 times in the area patrolled bu the Sac Sheriffs. Probably had something to do with the coverage area they had in Sac County. Lots of it is really rural. His moving around gave some of the jurisdictions a chance to deny he had been there and others to deny that the cases were linked. And it muddled up the admin and info sharing. Gave others the opportunity to not co-operate with each other. Walnut Creek, this means you. Having said all that Stockton is a really good possibility because of its location. And the city limits are complex. And at the time the SPD and the SJ Sheriffs weren't the best of friends.

You lay out his pattern of residence the best I've seen.

Do you think it is possible that EARONS was a dorm dweller in the beginning? That he ingratiated himself with other male students, become a "friend" and be asked home to Stockton, CCC, SoCal etc... I think EARONS may have had male roommates, studied their behaviors and grew bold enough to begin attacking with males present. If he had money, which I believe he did, college boys will help you out with a place to stay if you can pay and they won't pay much attention to what you're doing either.

Jane,

I think any of what you propose is possible. I lean toward the notion that, if he was a CSUS student, he wasn't living in a dorm, but was living in off-campus apartment housing that catered to students. I think he was from Stockton, but I think there's a good possibility he may have roomed with friends in Contra Costa and Goleta.

However, if he was living in on-campus housing, this is a good explanation for his summer and winter absences from Sacramento: they were necessary.

But
The more people he interacted with (rooming, hanging out etc) the better the chance somebody would make that call the cops never got. Goes to the point that somebody out there knows who this guy is. They just don't know they know.

This is one of the best posts in a long time, sir. You already know I am super obsessed with Irvine. I don't know how long it took you to write this above post, but it is a post I'll refer to anybody who ever wants to make a case for Mr. EAR-ONS not living near to where he offended. You backed up your theories with logic and with graphics.... and it all makes sense..... it's hypothetical, of course... but very persuasive.... I particularly like that little detail about one year leases...

I'm just curious as to your thoughts about why he went back up to Goleta in the Summer of 1981 to attack. I've always thought this was a little odd. One idea that came to me is that he wanted to commit another double and since the previous murders and attempted murder (H/H) would probably be attributed to a local, he drove up to Goleta because their was already a history.

A few months ago, I began entertaining the idea, "What if EAR/ONS was from Goleta - and not from Visalia or Sac?" I thought it was interesting when I read one of your posts that you were considering the same possibility. This might explain why nothing has turned up on a potential suspect who grew up in Visalia. If this was the case, it might point to EAR being in the Navy because of Lemoore Naval Air Station assuming that there is no other reason that he would be in Visalia. Since no promising Visalia local has turned up as promising suspect, Goleta or not, I tend to think that maybe EAR was not from Visalia afterall. Det. McGowan did say that the suspect who shot at him looked to be about 25 years of age. I have nothing to base this idea on, but was curious as to whether you do?

Nevertheless, I also think it is interesting that the Goleta crimes happened over the weekend (Sun night/ Early Monday Morning H/H attack; Sun Morning Manning/Offerman attack; Sun Morning Domingo/ Sanchez). This leads me to believe that EAR also could have been visiting the area (staying with family or friends) and that maybe he did not live in Goleta at all. There is also the possibility that maybe he had acquired a full time 9 to 5 and the weekends were his only free time, but I feel that this is unlikely as this was his passion; and he would likely not let a job get in the way of his passion.

Wherever EAR retreated to during the summer months of the EAR rapes, it would be interesting to find out whether similar rapes were committed either in Goleta or some other area.

Yeah, his return to Goleta is/was puzzling. I've also approached from the angle that he was from Goleta (having looked at Dos Pueblos yearbooks), or that his family moved there between '78 and '79—or that he had other family there.

Or friends he was visiting.

Or a professional contat/client of some sort.

Or he felt secure in returning to Goleta because he no longer lived there.

Or Goleta's killer wasn't the EAR/ONS.

Stockton Attack
I lived across the street from the home that was hit in Stockton. When I read your theory on Sac State I remember that I-5 between Stockton and Sacramento wasn't completed in 1977. You had drive over to 99 or take a confusing bunch of county roads to get to Sacramento from North Stockton. The road was completed in 1979.

That EAR never lived in a jurisdiction (except possibly Rancho Cordova early on) where he offended. But that leaves a bunch of places where he could have been hiding right out in plain sight. And I think looking for a connection between EAR and his victims outside of the prep and the actual crime is a complete waste of time. He wasn't a co-worker or a neighbor or a bag boy or a tennis instructor.

This is why I feel Lompoc is a distinct possibility during the time frame of the murders. Vandenberg AFB is located in Lompoc, and the NorCal rapes seemed to all "web out" from the location of Mathers AFB. As for Vandenberg in Lompoc, each of the murders took place on a straight shot south along the 101 freeway from that location, progressing further south each time he killed. As if he were expanding his territory further and further every time.

I've had this article bookmarked for a while. I found it via Google News Archive. It has alternately appeared under the headline "Going My Way?"

He Got A Ride
December 7, 1973

VISALIA, Calif. (UPI) — A young burglary suspect being chased on foot by police trotted up to a parked car along Mooney Boulevard.
"Are the cops chasing you?" one of the car's two occupants asked.
"Yeah," replied the youth.
They told him to jump in and the car sped off—to the police station. The suspect was turned over to juvenile authorities Wednesday night.
Plainclothes detectives John Vaughn and Steve Abbott said they had heard the police broadcast on the chase while sitting in their unmarked patrol car a few minutes before the youth approached.

Obviously, the name of the suspect is withheld because he was a juvenile. I wonder if there's any way to obtain it now, or if this article's intrigue shall remain exactly that.

This is pretty interesting. Something that should definitely be followed up on. Was there any other information in that article? I wonder if at least the name of that perp was kept, and if that name would pop up as a poi in other cases?) I would actually be surprised if that info has not been purged though. But maybe those detectives could be questioned to see what they remember of the incident, maybe something could come of this.

The way I read this the "youth" who was running from the cops approached two undercover guys. Maybe officers Vaughn and Abbott are still around. And could remember the name. Or enough of a description to put the perp in or out of the picture.

The two men who offered him the ride were plain clothes detectives.

This is made a little more clear in the version of the story that appeared in The Miami News on Dec 8, 1973:

Going My Way?
When two men in Visalia, Calif. offered a youth fleeling police a ride, he leaped into their car without hesitation. Be he'd made a mistake.
The pair were plainclothes detectives, and instead of a ride to freedom he got one-way transportation to the city jail.
Detectives Steve Abbott and John Vaughn said they had heard the call on their radio, and when the youth—wanted in a burglary investigation—came running by, they casually asked him if "the cops were after him."

I have a couple of questions to ask John Vaughn. I'll print this out and see what I can find out. Steve Abbott died a few years back, and within a week his wife also died. They were, as I recall, both in their 60s, and some questioned their deaths as "natural".

dengas, that's great news (about John Vaugh, not about Steve Abbott), and a great idea on your part. Even if there's no way to remember or recover the youth's name, it could still prove useful (e.g., the youth was Hispanic, black, or incarcerated for a year thereafter).

I would really like to find out if while chasing and investigating VR, LE went back and looked at previous burglary cases and looked into the perps that committed those crimes. It is very common for instance after a rape for LE to look into sex offenders that are in the area. Did Visalia LE do this with burglary cases after VR really started? I sure hope so.
If you think about it, how an offfender starts off....First a little peeping, then breaking in to houses, then ransacking the houses, then breaking in and committing rape, and finally raping and killing. If you look at the date 1973, and if this "kid" was committing just a burglary, it fits. It is prior to VR tearing up Visalia. Man, I sure hope Visalia checked this guy out.

This is the kind of stuff i think the investigation as a whole was lacking in the beginning.Th beginning is where all the answers lye. There wasn't enough communication between the police back then.I absolutely guarantee you he had been arrested by the police or caught by neighbors peeping in windows or burglary. I recently watched a story on tv about the second worst serial killer in Florida history next to bundy.the guys name was Dan rolling. His crimes and profile were very similar to ear. he had an extreme hatred towards woman,that they believed was fueled by the severe beatings he took from his father,and he resented his mother because she did nothing about it.He was caught peeping in windows as a teen,served in the air force in 1971 was kicked out, served time for rape and burglaries .After reading the story online it became real apparent to me that ear/ons life was probably similar and full of violence starting at a very young age. Somebody had to know something back then because he probably was a very disturbed child and teen.

intrigues me. I feel the police probably DID check him out. However, it's possible someone in the department was either related, or, knew the parents. Whoever it was may have quelched the cops, who took him in, and assured them he wasn't a POI.

As time goes on I'm becoming more convinced that EAR/ONS had help from somebody inside the department. With all the pressure that was on the departments back then it should have been mandatory that whoever was brought in should be grilled. I believe they questioned this person, and let him go after somebody interviened. JMHO

Sorry, Set. I'm a cynic and the police aren't my favorite people in the world, but I can't bring myself to believe anyone, inside of law enforcement (or, for that matter, out), would protect a serial rapist or murderer of the Snelling ilk, particularly one that assaulted virginal teenaged girls. Corruption exists, cops often protect their own where it pertains to that, or drugs, or other monetary crimes, but sex crimes are just a different story. Policemen are generally macho, straight-arrow types with little to no tolerance for weird psychological deviations. If one discovered that a close friend or colleague were a serial rapist, I think that relationship would immediately end on that basis. Sexual deviance the likes of the EAR's is a rare abberation, and it would take another sexual deviant of the same type to protect someone like that... and even so, people have a hard time keeping their mouths shut where it pertains to the dirty secrets of others.

There are a lot of variables here. First, every organization leaks like a sieve. It wouldn't take an officer deliberately warning EAR about police activities. All it would take was a secretary in the PD who was smitten with this charming young man. Who treated her like a queen. Or the nice old lady who owned the apartment house where he lived and just happened to work at the Sheriffs Dept. We need to remember that EAR was a sociopath. The reason he was able to go unidentified (if he was) for so long was that the face he showed during the day was very different from the one his victims saw. He was hardwired for success. That didn't involve getting caught, so he did what he needed to do to avoid getting caught. I'll bet he talked his way through ten roadblocks. LE was looking where they always look, at the usual suspects. Result 50 rapes and 10 or more murders. If I could touch type I'd spend some time recounting all the times LE looked right at somebody (or didn't even bother to look) who committed horrible crimes and walked right on by. Google the Sund Peloso murders, or Edward Kemper the Santa Cruz mass murderer. In the Sund Peloso case, long before Cary Stayner self Id'ed as the killer, a local reporter was in the hot tub at the Lodge where the killings occurred. Mr Stayner got in the tub with her and chatted her up. She excused herself, went right to the FBI guys and told them they ought to take a look at him because he was really creepy. They didn't. Too busy trying to pin it on the bikers from Modesto. This got a young park ranger killed. And for your own info googlr Mr Kemper or Polly Klass. 'K I'm tired of typing.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote in your post. Your point, however, is that those in LE have prejudices and tunnel-vision that works against solving certain crimes. This is correct. I think investigators in 2011 are a little wiser with respect to serial offenders than they were in 1977, or in 1888, when London police seeking to apprehend Jack the Ripper were looking for a frothing lunatic.

My own point, though, stands: no one who may have had a good sense of who the EAR was would have covered his ass, unless they were that rare breed of sick duck who's enamored with the sexually sadistic/homicidal type.

As evidence, he cites a Sacramento Bee article from December 1977, reporting Sacramento County sheriff's deputies chasing a suspect wearing a ski mask on a bicycle through the same area the rapist was known to stalk.

The deputies never caught the man, but they found his bike. It had been reported stolen* from the Redding area, the article said.

The bike rider wasn't the rapist, the cops said in the story. But Whitmeyer isn't so sure -- after other crimes, the rapist fled on a bike.

"Just because they had a profile years ago doesn't mean that with years of further investigation that that profile was correct," he said.

Whitmeyer is sure the bike links the rapist to Shasta County. He claims to have other credible evidence, although he would not be specific."

So the masked biker was chased...and caught? Great. By 1977 they were swabbing suspects mouths. Was his swabbed and was he let go for the results? Did Russ have anything to say on anything important, like that?

What is he talking about when he says they had a “profile”? They had psychological profiles of what the perp might be like, but other than shoe size, voice timber, penis size/shape and blood type (along with non-secretor status), they had a mostly blank page. They knew his approx body mass , but even the hair and skin tone differed. So how would a suspect be thrown out for having the wrong “profile”? He either failed the important tests (blood, shoes, penis) or he didnt, and if he didnt, then what would he get tossed for, Russ?

As for Whitmeyers mention of “other credible evidence" to prove his theory, if he cant prove it to the reporter and instead is vague about it, then he had no “credible evidence.” For a cop, even an ex-cop, that is the only thing evidence can be; credible. No one collects incredible evidence to use to convict someone of a crime. (They arent supposed to.)

Let’s presume that he had some credible evidence in his pocket then. The article came out in 2006. Why would he still be hanging on to this credible evidence? Is he holding onto it in hopes that he will crack the case, and wont share it with the wider public, who can possibly hellp an investigation? Im talking about the people who lived at the locale that this man thinks earons came from. They could provide information, possibly, if they knew. Did he canvass the neighborhood or something? Id cut him some slack for that. Other than that, what has that evidence done for the case in the 8yrs since he was clutching onto it? Maybe he found out his kinda sorta credible evidence wasnt credible at all.

It wouldnt be so hard to track down those rich realtor families, then, would it?

Also, he would only be in those places at certain times of the year? WHo checked out these places in the summer months ears was on hiatus?

Also, people would remember him as a rental dude walking into a home or talking to people about a home, or driving a car with a biz logo because his hunting ground was residential areas and neighbors are always very curious -anxious- about who will be moving in next to them. And the cops , according to ST, were looking into all the real estate personnel in the areas of some of the rapes, because of the two women who gave them a false suspect.


The most intruiging witness accounts of a person who mightve been ears in the neighborhood, usually had him usually doing something odd, day or night. Like jumping a fence, walking through yards , looking point blank into homes...these accounts to me seem to be the most likely ear sightings. And hes wearing normal clothes for the area hes in. He did his important surveillance on foot, not cruising by. I mean he may have drove through these neighborhoods and then shown up later in civvies, but I doubt it. If he was in the area enough unmasked, someone might have put it together when they saw the same guy in civvies walking though their yard.


And most importantly, imo, it seems that the fun for him was in being covet in his surveillance. No. Peeping. He was peeping, and that was thrilling. The hunt for him was covert and on foot. To look into everyone’s homes, to see how they lived, to pick and chose his targets. He may have followed women in his car or seen them on the street and targeted them, but the fact that he came back to areas to hit other women closeby several times, makes it obvious that he was running around these neighborhoods as a peeper and an opportunist for rape and robbery. This man walked in many more homes than the ones he raped in.

Ears as a janitor. Its a physically demanding job, youre on your feet the whole time doing physical labor. Even a very young man would have a hard time working all day and then running around like a batshit crazy person,for hours later. Ears, we are told by a witness who was with him and while looking straight at his whole body for minutes, makes a point to mention he had great posture, held himself in way that suggested he learned it in the military. Bending over a mop will put a crimp in your posture. And he was very agile. His response time was fast, he ran around the homes, he biked away. When he committed these crimes, he was well rested that day and in peak shape, imo, for most of the attacks. I also think he was well aware that he needed to be so, in order to get away with it.
He may have been a janitor, but i doubt he was out and about peeping in neighborhoods afer work. He also hit from around 11pm- 5ish am. A janitor coming from his job might smell like detergents and solvents. And do we ever hear from any of the victim reports what his bare hands are like? He used bare hands on victims on occasion, and they are never asked or told, or it is never mentioned to us, what they were like: ie, rough or soft. Rough hands might point to a job with physical labor. It seems like a glaring ommission from any detective work not to find that out.

If you believe he was the VR, then he may have learned that on the job, trial and error, for a year or two before his career as the ear. IMO, the suspicious pesons seen looking into windows to see what type of lock it has, sound like true ear sightings. Thats him learning on the job. Even if his parents were wealthy home owners, all homes are not alike. He was a hot prowlerl and he seemed to learn like the restof them do, on the job.

Also, even the dimmest cop or neighbor who confronted him would want to know if hes doing handywork on that home, why is he breaking into it and not fixing it.

IIs it correct to say that the most reliable information on him suggests that he drove and biked to and from the crime locations, and that he used the bike paths and canals, empty spaces, to approach and leave from a crime scene, frequently? You think he biked and drove to airports, too. Thats a pretty small community that youd be exposing yourself to on the days the time of the attacks, Anything is possible, but that seems to be an easy way to get busted.

Why wouldnt the cops have checked every available point into the communities to find the perp? Since this guy was racking up the attacks like a pinball machine, I can not see them skipping over the logbooks of these small airports and also falling to see the same name pop up on or around the same attrack days in the same areas the airports are located. Whether they looked into it sufficiently or not is another matter. But Im willing to believe that they checked these airports out as a formality, to cover all their bases. If you put the Occam’s razor to the theory that he flew, drove and biked to his destinations, i think it would fail. Criminals are weird. But most of them make things as simple as they can when committing a crime and expecting to get away smoothly. Ear commiitted many, many crimes. Over and over and over again. And the chance that earons was a TV villain who flew, driove and biked to his next victims, is a little far-fetched. IMO, hes not as smart as he’s built up to be, just by dint of not being caught by what looks like truly atrocious LE work, all around.

Yeah; no, that is not an important question. Even if he drove a van that day to do something you could do in most cars on the road in the 70s, it still doesnt jibe with him telling his victims that he lived in a van down by the river or that it needed food. The logic fail has been explained to you a few times now, the lights are on and nobodys home.
