THE DEFINITIVE VR THREAD

I thought an isolated definitive VR thread was needed and would be helpful.

9/3/73 8:15pm. Subject was spotted in flower bed looking in complaintant's bedroom window. Described as WMA, 25 years old, short cut blond hair, clean shaven with a round face.

9/10/73 615 W. Kaweah 9pm. A separate complaintant at a different residence was walking to her car which was parked at the curb in front of her house. Observed a subject exit from the backyard of her home. Subject observed her standing by her car and turned back towards her house and yelled "Catch you later, Sandy!" and then jogged northbound on Stevenson St from Kaweah. Described as WMA, 20-30 years old, 5'10" to 5'11", medium build, short cut blond hair, with a round face. Complaintant mentioned having a prowler problem for two months previous and on 10/10/73 at 10pm along with two friends observed the same suspect looking in a sliding glass door at the rear of the home.

7/24/75 1501 W. Kaweah (Ward Residence/McGowen incident) "Debbie stated that the suspect was wearing a black ski mask with light colored eye, nose, and mouth holes, he was approximately 5'10" to 5'11" and whom she described as a heavy build. She observed his arms and noted that he appeared to be fairly muscular and strong. She related further that she believed that the suspect had just come down the stairway from the upstairs apartment in which they had rented to a subject and that she had surprised him and he grabbed her and tried to knock her down so that he could get away."

12/9/75 1600 hrs. Ward residence called Agent McGowen saying that she found numerous shoe tracks under her daughter's bedroom window and that her daughter had complained of prowlers at her window in the past. The tracks were checked by McGowen and Shipley -- same measurement & pattern as those left at other ransack burglaries.

1-28-76 14 yr old female living at 600 S. Burke Street. She stated on Sunday 1/18/76 at approximately 11:00 PM she and her sister were sitting in the family room watching television. She looked up and observed a white male adult looking in the window. She stated that when the subject noticed that he had been discovered, he turned and walked away, last seen northbound out of the backyard. She described the subject as being in his early twenties, 5'11" 190 lbs., light colored short cut hair and with a round face. She described him as being light complected and thought he was weraing a dark green army jacket.

Early prowlings
Lets start with the early prowling incidents that occurred in '73. Some of you have info on the suspicious person seen peering into windows AND being spotted leaping out of someone's backyard. The "catch ya later sandy" incident. The prowlings were right in the heart of the ransacker neighborhoods. Let's start with this early prowler's description.

Early prowlings
Im lacking a few details but I think the overall incident was a lady was leaving her house. She is getting into her vehicle which is parked on the street. She sees a young man jump over her fence from her backyard. He sees her he knows he's spotted so he turns toward the house and says "catch ya later sandy" as if saying goodbye to someone at the residence. He then proceeds to jog eastbound on the east/west street. No one at the residence was named sandy. It was a "oh * I've been spotted" move.

Thanks ZForce. Very interesting! It is amazing this guy wasn't caught. I'd wager it would be a different story these days with everyone having a cell phone and camera, as well as security cameras all over the place, alarm systems, 911 etc. Is there anything I can read about VR's activities beyond what has been mentioned on this board? Thanks

Thanks ZForce. Very interesting! It is amazing this guy wasn't caught. Not really. However, if this thread keeps unfolding chronologically there might be some new minor details that come out. For instance, if the gal who mentioned a prowler problem for two months is accurate...that puts him out in the Kaweah neighborhood as early as July 1973.

Yeah that's pretty much the typical overview of VR. I believe you've always been able to find that info in the references section of the Wikipedia page though. I think this thread will end up enlightening a lot of people to the case with more in depth info.

Does anyone know when the VR was first considered to be ear/ons and by whom. I don't think LE in Sacramento today think there is any connection to the cases and they have more information than all the lawn chair investigators on this board have put together. There must be a reason for this. As far as law enforcement in Sacramento is concerned they are two seperate perps.

For all we know this VR is EAR/ONS could have been a false clue planted by ear/ons himself to throw us off of his tracks. The evidence clearly indicates that this perp knew how to plant false clues.

Its the Visalia PD which first saw a connection and then went up to Sacramento when they heard about EAR back in the 70s, they must have been convinced of a link based on the offenders description, behavior , MO etc, however Sac PD werent to keen, I think the Sac police were not keen on Visalia stepping into the scene because Sacramento police were struggling to make headway in the EAR case and further publicity would have put them under more pressure than they were already under. In the THS documentary one of the Sacramento detectives , I think its detective Shelby says around that time they didnt have too much info to give to the public , I assume they were struggling in their investigation. Sac PD `s initial strategy of trying to catch EAR without alerting the media and public had failed and with rising panic they were under pressure and the emergence of the Visalia PD with their possible theory would have really put the cat amongst the pigeons. Without trying to bring back the discussion of the two offenders and whether they are linked or not (or whether they are the same individual) -there is enough clues , behavior characteristics at the crime scene,MO etc to see why detectives in Visalia and why the current detectives believe in a link......

yep , another thing to add to that would be - the guy could not go unaccounted for during the week either because he was living with a parent/relative/guardian or he had some other responsibility during weekdays

Actually it was May 1977 that Sac PD and VPD started to work together on the two crime series possibly being one. It was Sac SO that didn't believe they were connected.

this is very revealing , clearly this guy had a fixation on this lady. Was her home burglarized or was there any activity around her residence after 10/10/73?

The EAR and Law Enforcment

I agree with C1521 that the EAR was not LE. He probably was not the son of LE. I'm leaning the other way, believing that he was a paroled sex offender. With that said, I cannot categorically rule out the possibility that he was somehow connected to LE. It could something as simple as he hung around cops (like Edmund Kemper did.

The thing that continues to bother me is the Shelby situation. (How did the EAR know where Shelby lived). There was another similar situation involving another EAR investigator that I cannot go into detail about but suffice to say, Shelby was not an isolated incident.

The knowledge about the phone calls (and calling unlisted numbers) bugs the hell out of me. The town hall meeting bugs me. How did the EAR learn of the unpublicized meeting (if not from LE). There are plenty of cases where the serial offender turned out to be a peace officer. So, while I do not believe that to be the case here, it cannot be completely ruled out.

Phone taps and bugs were not that difficult to obtain (or create). The phone boxes were on the side of the house and usually were not locked. Slightly more sophisticated bugs (and listening devices) were available and were put into the actual phone handset.

I don't think that the EAR went to those extremes. There was a lot that he didn't know. It is curious that he knew when most of the males would not be home (without being detected himself). That took some dedication on his part.

I wish ND was around to expound on the phone tap that allegedly was on one of the victim's phone. Because it seems incredible but then again, this case is incredible. This serial creep has managed to outsmart ALL of us.
Ive been thinking deeply about this issue of EAR knowing when males were not at home, and maybe the answer may be simpler than we thought. There is evidence to suggest EAR had known or selected some victims in advance. Could it be that maybe he overheard conversations between the victims and the household males while he was prowling? PI s have a habit of lurking outside hotel rooms,motel rooms and apartment complexes listening in or sometimes photographing and videotaping their targets......................I thought maybe EAR spied in on the conversations of some victims from outside their windows and eventually he got to know when certain males were gone...Afterall EAR did peep in couples doing all kinds of things I thought its also likely he heard all sorts of things being said by potential victims

Could it also be that the hang up calls were a way of testing the water for example in some houses the male/dad/brother usually answers the phone............therefore if EAR did not hear a male answer the phone he would then go to the house and see if the male was around........

Hi, just enter Glasby in the search bar on this site and that will help you find past discussions. Glasby, in my opinion has a connection with EAR/ONS either directly or through a close cohort. I was convinced it was Glasby -- 3 toed, "white" german shepard connection, beat up Offerman's janitor, patient of Offerman and Manning, but it can't be. He is too young and was in high school in Goleta while EAR/ONS was attacking in Sacramento. He went to live with a retired, bad cop in Sacramento and as SoE pointed out that cop lived incredibly close to Rancho Cordova and Citrus Heights. There are other connections that someone shared with me that I can't say. The LE connection on another thread makes me think Glasby and this cop knew EAR/ONS. There are so many aspects to this case it is mind boggeling.

The other connections that were shared with you , sounds intriguing..........is this from a very reliable source?

Do you know if that cop connected to Glasby has been looked at to see if he had any other unsavory "associates" ? The more this cop is mentioned, the more I wonder............

Considering how different LE agencies were not apparently sharing information with each other very well makes one wonder how many pieces of seemingly minor information slipped through the cracks.
I can't say if he did have other unsavory associates but the saying "birds of a feather flock together" comes to mind.

The frustrating thing is that Glasby, the cop, and the circles associated with these people have been explored -- very thoroughly, by professionals and nonprofessionals alike, and by multiple generations of investigators.

Long story short, EAR remains unidentified.

Unlisted numbers and the poem

From about 1962 (when my dad was a Realtor) until about 2009, the data that R.E. brokers and appraisers could purchase through each CA county had all the property details of purchase, size, sellers and buyers names PLUS the phone number of the current owner. This was done so that a county wide emergency system could eventually be used, but instead it caused a privacy issue and the phone numbers were removed from the published data. Also, "neighborhood issues" (or meeting notices) are usually published in the Multiple Listing Service announcements.

From the poem I read signed "EAR" he seems to be an "anti establishment" spoiled brat who's parent was either a judge, attorney, or LE. He touts not having to have an 8-5 employment status, but he calls his own shots and still has his own money with the disapproval of a parent.

That is very interesting about the realtors and appraisers having that information, names and phone numbers that is.
About his not having an 8 to 5 job, I wonder about that. Most of his attacks took place on weekends, I wonder if his leisure seeking took place before and/or after work and on his days off, or maybe before/after school.

The EAR's Attitude toward Women

Something just dawned on me about the EAR/ONS' attitude toward women. In the FDLE Profile (as well as John Yarbrough's interview on the MSNBC Investigates program), the conventional wisdom is that the EAR was punishing women because they were "wh*res". This may be part of his twisted, sick thought process. He certainly used that term in the recorded phone call.

He attacked underage girls who were virgins. So the belief that he targeted "loose" women (which was inferred in the FDLE Profile) may not be completely accurate. His use of the word "b*tch" over and over again suggests to me that he was angered at assertive women (no doubt women who rejected him). The Women's Liberation Movement was still very much in it's ascent in 1976 and a lot of dominant (and homophobic) males were threatened by the notion of women's equality.

(Is this were a dominant, controlling mother comes into play?)

For whatever reasons, he avoided the neighborhoods that were considered lower-class or low-income areas. As far as I know, no EAR activity in the Mills Park, White Rock or Cordova Court subdivisions. And he, for the most part, avoided apartments, especially in the low-income areas.

Could it be that he attacked the type of women that he was attracted to but rejected him? Friday's comment about the unattractiveness of the composite sketches got me thinking more about this.

It's just a developing theory, but I think that it was the rejection (real or imagined) that set the EAR off. (And maybe was the stressor the preceded an EAR attack). It is possible that he had just come to expect rejection and his ego would not allow him to be denied. Perhaps he was attacking women that he would never have a chance with under normal circumstances.

There is some indication of this with #5 and #6. In SoCal, I am wondering if he didn't try to approach either Charlene Smith, Patrice Harrington, Manuela Witthuhn, or Cheri Domingo and was enraged by the rejection (after he had built up his body).

In Janelle Cruz case, I believed that he befriended her but became enraged when he saw her in the room with her friend.

Also, could it be that the women that he continued calling were someone who rejected him?

What are some of your alternative ideas, Drifter? If you list a few here I am willing to examine and judge each one on its own merits. What we are trying to do is look at each piece of information in context and how it applies to the crime, victims, time period and location. If you can take information and take another view and angle on it I would be happy to see your POV.

Most important is your input. If you have your own ideas and perspective that varies from the group think, by all means, share them. C1521 convinced me that the EAR/ONS lived in that Cordova Meadows/Cordova Gardens subdivision at one point. I do not agree with him that the EAR was definitely a CHS graduate between 1971 to 1976. But I am looking nonetheless because he may be right.

I have to weather the criticism of my views on the Maggiore case. Have the courage of your convictions to stand by your views whether they be popular or unpopular. But also be flexible and willing to amend your position if there is a persuasive counter-argument. I have flip-flopped so much that I am thinking about running for President Yell.

Thanks very much for your replies to my concerns upthread. Am glad I posted those concerns, and got them out of my system.

As a professional writer and something of a perfectionist, I probably have been a bit too hard on posters here. By training, I look very closely at the way in which someone expresses himself or herself in writing. I tend to evaluate communication based on the quality of the writer's logic, internal consistency, persuasiveness, conciseness, presumptions, grammar and spelling, and related variables.

But for the purpose of this message board, that approach probably is a tad too literal. As Arch says, I need to look more at the "big picture". Any particular comment or idea is of the moment, and may not mean much in the grand scheme of things. And many posters write sloppily. But it's all momentary, and we move on.

Beliefs about EAR evolve over time. It's these evolved "beliefs" that matter. Accordingly, Speakel's "belief" that EAR was a "White male" has solidified over time (if there was ever any doubt), and now is virtually everyone's "belief". And so that trait becomes the consensus, with a very high probability of accuracy. Okay, I get it.

Also, I like Arch's comment about the relationship between openness to "beliefs" and plausibility. "...having an open mind to something that is not plausible becomes interpreted as lending it undeserved credibility". Very true! And, by the way, I agree that the "probability" that TK was the EAR is so low as to approach zero, and therefore not worth discussing.

Speakel has the right idea ... be certain of only what is virtually certain ... a list of a few basic traits wherein the probability of their accuracy is so high as to approach 100 percent. Speakel will even go so far as to "slightly" narrow the focus, when feeling brazingly ... daring. Smile

Oh what a frustrating and difficult case! From time to time I may need a few days vacation from all this, to clear the cobwebs from my brain, and gain some perspective.

I never had any doubt that he was chosing his victims because he couldnt have these beautiful women, and so became angry and would just take them. The ones hat were out of middle and high school, I mean. He made comments about how beautiful they were (or maybe just their bodies), on occassion. He had a hard enough time keeping hard during his attacks, that if he wasnt attracted to the women, he didnt seem to be able to carry on with an sexual assault.

It's not a fluke that all of the girls and women were pretty or that he didnt have a few handicaps in his quest for women without a gun and mask. His small penis has probably got something to do with it.

Unless this is an elaborate ruse by the police to try and hurt his pride and roust him out, all his victims, even the virgins, mentioned what a small penis he had. I'm thinking he probably got rejected at least once, maybe even laughed at, and his hatred of women, started with his mother most likely, then becomes even more entrenched. Speaking of his mother, I wonder if she also didnt shame him sexually. Specifically with him touching himself. He starts off his sexual assaults by masturbating and the things he says to the victims sort of sound like he's trying to make them react in disgust to him, maybe moreso than fear. I mean, it sounds like he's challenging them. I dunno, just a feeling I got after reading all those victim reports. It most probably was a page out of his sexual fantasy script, to either have the girl respond in disgust and affirm his shame and hatred, or favorably, and reaffirm his belief that women were whores. Cant win with this guy and his one-sided arguments.

Anyway, he may have been aggressive and merciless, but he was also not confident in his sexual prowess. There's the big problem of his soft penis and how to keep it going during his sexual attacks. But he also mentions things to victims like, 'I bet you like a big cock', and he brought a bigger dildo to penetrate at least one victim with. And most glaringly, I think he was picking the very young girls not out of a fetish or paraphilia, but because they were much much less secually threatening than the victims who were grown women.

What I find so odd about earons is, if he hated women so much, and he couldnt get it up much...dont most offenders who have this combination routinely beat their victims? He tortured them psychologically and with the bindings but he didnt beat them unless they tried to phsically resist him. I dont remember him beating them out of a burst of anger due to his sexual failings, which you would have thought would happen at some point. Instead, when he encounters a 'difficult' victim, he just keeps threatening to kill them 'if'... even though theyve kept resisting him. Its sort of odd how he goes from this, to bludgeoning them to death. Its said that the two people who resisted him and got away, the woman and that guy who surprised him, made him snap and finally do what he wanted to do, which was kill people. But werent there also a few 'regular' rapes inbetween those and the murders? Youd think he's have beaten the next victims so much worse, that an uninterrupted escalation would be seen in the step towards murder. Sort of like he did with the one victim ealier on, who was doing her laundry in the garage (he broke her nose and brutilized her worse than the previous victims, who physically resisted him).

It's not a big thing, but its just a touch weird that it went from rape/threats, to murder. I think he definitely hated women, but I also think he wanted to kill the men just as much as the women, and who knows, maybe more.



EDIT: If he wasnt totally incapacitated, I wonder if he started sexually victimizing women or girls when Viagra became widespread.

i think ear/ons was a drug user..i put not keeping it up down to... either speed or cocaine.. also behaviour like paceing around talking to himself..crazy rambling..clenching teeth..keeping things tidy..narcotics comes to my mind...anyone who has done these drugs will know what i mean.

In my opinion, and I agree with you FMC. Ear had behaviors that clearly indicated his use of drugs. I dare you to say you have never been around a drug user and hadn't a clue. We have many who operate in high places who pull it off all the time and not exclusively sexually. But, EAR had clear sexual indicators that those who have pharmacology behind them should or would recognize. EAR had many OCD behaviors that would indicate a million different odd behaviors in one odd duck!!! I will go further into it at a later date. Knowing what he did and did not do during his rapes told a lot .....EAR was known to rape multiple times.. Don't forget that there are Opiates which can make a man last a long long time! Remember he masturbated in between a commonly known act for heroin addicts. Vicodan, morphine, oxy- contin, damson p, darvoset, percodan, fetynal, there are many more, the list goes on and on. But opiates do keep you going...

Do you have a background in pharmacology? Because opiates dull the sex drive, and ears didnt need help staying hard for a long period of time, he needed to stay hard enough for the few minutes it took him to complete a sex act. (Ill get back to this at the end.)
People heavily into opiates, like heroin addicts, are not having sex. Read any book about a famous rock star from the 60s, 70s or 90s. They slow you down, make you drowsy, sleepy. They make you slur your words and lose your balance. Something he was not, and could not afford to be, during his crimes.

There are two things that can be said about ears, and that is that he was a sexually sadistic psychopath and he had OCD. Psychopaths who are sexual sadists typically do have high sex drives. Young men masturbate a lot (more than you seem to think, Im guessing), and sexual psychopaths usually have high sex drives. Its’s a typical complaint from their partners; they cant keep up with the demands.

Ears had a very intense fantasy life, but unlike any sexually normal person, he couldnt do what sexually aroused him, which was to hurt women. So yes, he masturbated a lot in addition to just doing it a normal amount, which is still a lot. The crank phone calling, the peeping, (if he was VR) the burglarizing homes, ... all of these things would excite him to the point of having to orgasm. Its all about being devious and violent, that was what he was (mis-)wired for sexually. The power he held, the degradation or destruction of the lust object, that's what excited him.

The refractory period of a guy his age (18-30yrs) isnt long, maybe 10-30mins. He had problems getting and maintaining erections though, whether it was psychological or physiological, so sometimes his would be a little longer. He was hanging around and eating between the times he raped/orgasmed, waiting out the refractory period. He was in a lot of homes for a long time, some for hours, and I dont have a chart but the longer he was in a home the more likely he was going through refractory stages and raping at the end of each. Of course, not all of the attacks were alike.

There were some attacks where he was hypersexual, there were some victims with which he had a more difficult time keeping an erection, there were times when his penis was harder than softer, or bigger than littler. I think he was a compulsive masturbator since puberty hit him. He already has a high sex drive because he’s a psychopath, to add to that he has OCD, and mental illnesses make people unhappy, cause depression. And the way he would self-medicate would probably be through masturbation; its the most handy way to self medicate, and you train yourself from a young age, basically. And a lot of the things he does, from the lotion to what he says to the victims, indicates that he has a preoccupation with masturbation, and he needs it, and he needs to work through something with the victims about it.

Anyway, I think that peeping really turned him on, he must have started it young, too. I dont think he kept his hands off of little earons while he was staring into houses. LE also thought he was jerking it outside because he came into some of the homes naked from the waist down. Thats probably true, but busting into someones home naked to your shoes may have just been a calculated move to terrify the victim from the first moment. I think he only did that with the single women, too. With the men he would have aroused suspicion at his trueintentions and caused them (with the women) to jump into action. He was all about facilitating things the easiest, most effective way to control the victims up until he raped, and he wanted the men in the dark about it , completely (though im sure he mustve known that the men knew what he was mos likely doing when he took the women from the room).
Anyway, my point is, that if he couldnt keep his hands off himself prior to the attack, he may not have had gone through a refractory period allthe way, or just not been in the mood due to other things. For example, when things go a little awry for him according to his plan, he gets mentally muddled...that is not drugs, that is OCD. But an example of both this and his compulsive wanking mightve caused his trouble achieving an erection with the victim that night. I think he saw her in the home was he was out peeping, he thought she lived there, so thinkling that he wouldnt be breaking in for an hour or two, he masturbated. Then to his surprise she was gathering her things up to leave and his break in plan was botched, but having marked her he still wanted to go through with it, so he meets them at the front and forces them back in. The scenario of how he ran his plan and how he raped was off because of this monkeywrench in his plans: he leaves the man out front, and takes her to the bedroom to rape & ... he has trouble getting an erection throughout the attack (and only stays there for like an hour).


Psychopaths self medicate, like any other person with a mental illness may, so he may have done drugs. He is rather paranoid in the homes, so you would maybe point to speed, which has that side effect. Except.... you get a high tolerance to speed pretty quickly and so you need to take more, but when you take more and more, it leads to freakouts: paranoid or violent, but either way, messy occurances. I think if he was taking speed over the 6 years he was raping and killing, that he would have had some trouble, problem, slip up ...because thats over 50 crimes he committed (much more if you include all the lesser crimes, like burglary, etc) , and the level of difficulty in pulling off the crimes was high, and they usually lasted over long periods of time when he was in a home. So maybe he used drugs recreationally sometimes, but he does not seem to be an addict, and he especially does not seem like he was using them during his crimes. Hell, if its true that he was pouring beer down the sinks, then Id guess he was an ‘I keep my temple clean’ sort of guy. Or at least smart enough not to do anything to take an edge off during the commision of the crimes, where the consequences of him not being on his best were dire and scared him more than anything else would. Certainly not the crimes he committed. He didnt need to drink or do drugs to carry off a crime or to hurt people. He spent copious amounts of time , sometimes years, planning out most of his crimes. He broke into homes and prepared them for the attacks. He knew he had to be fit and on his toes, during every phase of the crime. And hurting people was the whole reason he was doing it at all. These were the high points of his sexual life, and they happened infrequently and he had to make them last, both that night, and for his longterm wank bank afterwards. He was pumped on adrenelin and excitement during his crimes, he didnt need drugs, they would not help him , they would take away from the enjoyment of being in the moment, i think.

The thing that we sometimes mistake for paranoia with ears, is the constant checking and recheckiing of things while he’s in the home. That is classic OCD, and the OCD is strong with this one. If you want someone to remember him, you should put that in a profile: obsessive-compulsive behavior; doing things over an again, repeating words or sentences, checking and rechecking to see if he’s locked the door, tying his shoes three times over,etc. (And the other thing is : high, reedy voice.)


I dont know what is “telling” in what he does and doesnt do wrt sex. I can think of two things off the bat that are telling, but they have nothing to do with drugs.

Ill reiterate: I think his goal during the rapes did not seem to be to go the longest he could during a sex act , with or without drugs. His goal was to stay erect enough for a scant few minutes, enough to complete a sex act in a fast to normal amount of time for a man who wants to get off and doesnt care about the other person. He hung around to get past normal refractory periods and do it again, to make the most out of his night, i guess.
With some (most?) of the women, his goal wasnt to get in and get off. He wanted to penetrate them, withdraw and do something else -or just watch them squirm in distress- and then do it again. I think he was getting off on violating them in that way, as many times as he could, and then watching their distress and getting a lot of excitement from that. Thats how he prolonged the attack. I dont think he was losing an erection during those times, or prolonging it for a bigger orgasm for himself. The most pleasure was in the violation and distress of the women, and the orgasm he eventually had was just a release.

Heroin are able to get erections but it does take a very long time to ejaculate and sometimes there is the tendency to lose your erection half way through sex.Heroin addicts do lose their sex drive but not altogether.They can and will have sex but amount varies from person to person though.

Some people will use speed or cocaine and when they have had enough they may take opiates or Benzodiazepines to come down so this could explain EAR/ONS behaviour.Speed/Cocaine users will think of sex non-stop and can ejaculate multiple times one after another but erections can also be hard to maintain.The clenching teeth and talking to yourself are also traits of Amphetamines.Another problem that occurs is the penis also shrivels up and make it appear smaller than it is.Amphetamine users can also stay up for nights on end,They sleep very little apart from when there coming down.

In my opinion I would say that yes EAR/ONS was a drug user but no an addict.In one house he asked about a Doctors bag.One thing is drug addicts dont tend to live to old age so this could explain him vanishing.Another thing could be after his last attack Domingo/Sanchez in 1981 he could have got clean but in 1986 when Janelle Cruz was attacked could have been because he Relapsed.

One thing thous was that he hardly ever took money from peoples houses.If he was an addict then I would be expecting him to take all the money he could find.

Take all this information from somebody who knows about Drugs.This is something I know a lot about without going into details.

stole drugs from one of the victims i believe..some cocaine..maybe a ruse..but if he was coming down and out of snow..he may have been able to resist taking the money..but i bet he could'nt resist another line. just like if he got hungry and couldnt resist the turkey.

Anything is possible. But when you start down tracks like these, youre starting from the bottom. He is a sexually sadistic psychopath. Its obvious that drugs were not his motivation for what he did. He didnt take the money or expensive jewelry, ususally, or it wasnt his focus. In the 50some homes that he hit, you have only heard that he took drugs from one house. In 50some hits, some of those people are going to have prescription painkillers, speed (dieting), etc, in their medicine cabinets. He didnt need any drugs to enhance his orgasm, this was the peak of him being present in the moment and doing what made him feel orgasmically good. When you do drugs, you can become erratic in your behavior. You can have depth perception and balance problems. He never showed anything like that --and this is someone who rode a bike (off-road) to get away sometimes, where you need those skills. He does not seem, from everything that has been shown of him, the type to take a chance, and he's smart enough to know he needs to be fit and alert or hes going to lose it, lose control and make a mistake, maybe get caught. The OCD part of him might even panic if he lost control. CONTROL. Everything he's doing is to be in complete control. Over himself, over the women, over the household, over the community and over the police. But mostly himself.
At least one victim said he was fake-shaking and asking for drugs...that right there says a lot. If she could tell he was faking it, and it sounds like he was, then that shows you that he's most likely just using that as another ruse.

And what recreationally used drug makes you have sobbing fits and talk about your momma?

Again, if your main objective is to rape women, why would you do heroin/an opiate as an enhancement? Im going to go out on a limb here and say, I dont think he wanted a soft, shriveled penis that only partially worked to rape women with, and to depress the high he wanted to get through raping. As for speed, how irritating would it be to have your nose run inside a noseless mask? Who of his victims ever heard him sniff? And in all of those attacks, which were highly charged, he never lost control and did something off the script. He beat men into submission and he beat women who physically tried to repel him. The one victim he coldcocked in the laundry room was due to the fact that he LOST control on the previous attack and was furious because of it, not randomly high and punchy.

Its hard not to notice that in most of the attacks, he did thngs between raping & reoffending. He also had the women try to make him hard (again). That is a very interesting question you have posed ! I dont think this aspect has ever been thoroughly dissected but it is a very fascinating aspect.....I would be very eager to hear your theory...............

It also occured to me that there is an irony here :EAR was not too concerned with touching womens breats during his crimes yet when he started hitting in Sacramento rumors spread that he was cutting off womens breasts and nipples....

And in all of those attacks, which were highly charged, he never lost control and did something off the script. He beat men into submission and he beat women who physically tried to repel him. The one victim he coldcocked in the laundry room was due to the fact that he LOST control on the previous attack and was furious because of it, not randomly high and punchy.

Its hard not to notice that in most of the attacks, he did thngs between raping & reoffending. He also had the women try to make him hard (again). He's also probably 18-25 during (a lot) of the attacks. I put down the conservative amount of time for a refractory period for ages 18-30, but in the bracket of 18-25, if he's really excited and he hasnt eaten too much food, he could go less than 10 mins and stay hard (for him) enough to keep offending without having an orgasm.

He's bold because hes overconfident. He's well-planned because he has OCD and the only thing he comes close to being scared by is getting caught.

How many heroin users have you seen that were as fit as he was? How many people even use heroin recreationally? He has strong OCD symptoms, which means that he;s probably a highly addictive personality. He shows more indications that he's addicted to food than drugs. When you do drugs, you can become erratic in your behavior. You can have depth perception and balance problems. He never showed anything like that --and this is someone who rode a bike (off-road) to get away sometimes, where you need those skills. He does not seem, from everything that has been shown of him, the type to take a chance, and he's smart enough to know he needs to be fit and alert or hes going to lose it, lose control and make a mistake, maybe get caught. The OCD part of him might even panic if he lost control. CONTROL. Everything he's doing is to be in complete control. Over himself, over the women, over the household, over the community and over the police. But mostly himself.

Interesting stuff ! I have been fascinated by the drugs connection in this case. It makes sense what you said regarding recreational use of speed. If EAR was active in the wee morning hours and then also burglarizing houses and scoping some during the day he probably didnt sleep much at times ........., taking this into account the use of speed makes sense . I have heard that some housewives also use the drug to keep going throughout the day and be able do all their household chores etc . The drug usage could also explain why there is evidence to suggest that either EAR knew Glasby or knew of him.......

Earlier today I was referred to an article about Keith and Patti that I had actually seen before. It was from 1988, long before LE knew the EAR/ONS was responsible for their unfortunate murders. Upon reading it again, I was immediately struck how some facts seem to have been rearranged in our minds, based off our initial grasping of the material at hand.

Here are a couple things I noticed:

1. Patti's interaction with a jogger and a stranger did not occur days or weeks before the murder. It happened long before she even married Keith, moved to San Francisco and then to Laguna Niguel with him. If this was indeed the EAR from before, he would have had to keep tabs on her from all over the state. I don't really see that happening in 1980, especially when he could have easily chosen another victim.

2. Whether or not his first sighting of her was at the grocery store, I don't really know obviously. It would appear that way, but since he had his "kit" with him, it's safe to say he followed her to and from the store from the initial get go.

3. I believe Keith and her began kissing when she was putting away the groceries, hence leaving a few items in the bags, before moving into the guest bedroom. I also find it quite interesting they weren't utilizing the main bedroom, but hey, to each their own.

4. All in all, I just find it incredibly sad that it took near 21 years for the families to realize it was a true psychopath who did them in. That whole section where Keith's dad blames Patti's possible past just breaks my heart; especially since she was a true innocent here.

5. The fact that the bedding was re-made over their bodies is a rather bizarre touch, and also that he closed the bedroom door behind him. It's like he finally respected their privacy after he did what he wanted.

6. Roger Harrington was surprised that the front door was locked when he showed up, which indicates to me that Keith and Patti really never locked their door that often. So I wouldn't be surprised if on this night, while they made love, one of them merely forgot to lock it.

Not that it would have mattered anyway. I'm sure he had his break-in kit with him.

What are all your thoughts?

Access to gated communities
If EAR/ONS folowed some of his victims home (which I tend to believe in the case of Charlene and Patrice) I agree with Amber that he just could have followed her into the gated community when the gate opened, the sensor senses another car and won't shut and allows it in. If there were human guards at the gate at that time, I don't think that is probable but with gates that you enter an access code, or have a remote opener, it is very possible, I have done it many times. If he followed her to the gate and couldn't get in and then entered from the golf course or jumped a wall, how would he know which house she lived in?

I doubt they had modern gates with remote openers back then, its most likely there were guards- I seem to remember someone on this board mentioning something about there being guards at Niguel shores back then and one of the them getting into a spot of bother....... This bit about this case is quite puzzling because from what I have read and heard there wasnt much prowling activity in Niguel shores compared to Ventura or Goleta ,.....it is really intriguing and leaves a lot of questions about ; how EAR came about to select Patti

For those of you who are proponents of this, I couldn't help but notice the proximity between Camp Pendleton and the Harrington home. Laguna Niguel has always struck me as an odd area for his first OC attack and when I mapped it that was the first thing that jumped out at me. Does anyone know where the bloody glove mentioned in Sudden Terror was found? At the very least that will tell us which way he went when he left the scene that night.

The Hedge Wall

Never seen this mentioned or discussed on here.

At the end of the street where Janelle lived, there stands a huge hedge wall that wraps around her entire complex. From the street, it appears to be a normal wall, but the closer you get, one realizes it is actually split in two, allowing pedestrians to move from the neighborhood to the main road.

If one was to stand in the middle of the wall, no one could see you there from either side (when looking straight on). However, when one does stand there, the direct view in sight is Janelle's house and specifically, her garage door where he gained access to.

Interesting, MM. I like the way the footage of Janelle pulses in and out. The musical choice works too. It reminds me of 'Southland Tales' (an unfairly maligned movie), in which that piece was also used.

Although I have to say the piece only mentions that EAR is wanted for break ins,rapes and murders-lets not forget that EAR committed countless other crimes like theft, making nuisance and harassing phone calls, committing lewd and indecent acts in peoples houses and bedrooms, suspected murder of animals, vehicle and bicycle thefts, committing lewd and indecent acts to minors and the list could go on

The news articles at JJ and Arch's sites give conflicting information about the Maggiore murders. The initial reports say there was only one suspect seen fleeing the area. Later the news accounts indicate there were two men and the comps were released and EAR disappears from his familiar hunting ground. Coincidence? Did EAR leave the area because he was the shooter of the Maggiore's or did he live near the murder site and the door to door canvasses were making him nervous?

I'm glad you posted this. I am curious--and disturbed--to learn that SCSD waited a month before pounding the pavement and canvassing the neighborhood. I would think this would be done immediately as the recollections of potential witnesses would be at their freshest points. That's troublesome.

I suspect that he had connections in Sacramento; what they are specifically are debatable points. I don't, however, think it coincidence that he left Sacramento in April 1978 at the time the suspect composites were released. This has been discussed a month or so back, but it doesn't hurt to revisit old ground: I feel that a combination of the door-to-door work and the composites were enough to warrant his flight. Somebody in Sacramento knew (KNOWS) the identity of this criminal.

You were pretty vocal about investigating the suspect's origins in Fresno, Visalia, etc., and I think that's a good idea, and--I'm sure we're in agreement on this--I would hope that SCSD took the time to do this back in 1978, but I have to question that considering what we suspect to be the outcome of the 1977 meeting between that agency and Visalia PD.

I think you're right--there is an EAR connection with Maggiore.

In my business life I used to tell people "If what you are doing isn't working, do something else." It sounds so simple but in my experience that process of thinking outside the box doesn't happen near as often as it should. Like I've said before (probably too many times) the way most cases get solved is by doing what the Sac Sheriffs did, a bunch of legwork and canvassing followed by a tip or two that point them at a suspect. Didn't work this time. Do something else.

I'm wondering who the thousands of airmen were who Biondi said they interviewed? I know that there were quite a few in the 320th who didn't even get questioned. So if there were some in the 320th that slipped by, then I'm positive many from the 323rd didn't get questioned and probably no one from the 349th. Maybe Biondi solved some big cases....I don't know....I know of 2 cases (ear and UC Davis murders) where he bungled them. This is why when Hirschfield got popped, the DA wanted nothing to do with Biondi, who was original lead detective.

Having been guilty of know-it-all-ism a time or two in my life and hopefully learning from the resulting embarrasment I kinda sympathize with the LE guys who worked their tocuses off to catch this guy. I just get suspicious when I see someone in front of TV cameras a lot.

Next on the to-do list.
Put to bed the Visalia Ransacker/EAR/ONS connection. Is there anything physical to link them? If not we are stuck with that ol' bugbear preponderance of evidence. What does that tell us? Has LE dug in on this, if not are they willing to? If not, why not? Then take the HS yearbooks from the High School(s) in Visalia. (I'm assuming there's a continuation school or trade school) Check 'em out. Then the ones from surrounding towns all the way to Fresno. Look for anyone who resembles the composites. Get some newspaper publicity, TV stuff. I mean this is a good story for the media. And don't forget the dropouts.

I'm fast convincing myself that the ransacker was somebody no one would suspect. Good kid, played sports, decent grades, well liked and real good at hiding his perversions. Like my schoolmate *Bob from that other thread. If he'd been one of the losers the Visalia PD would have rounded him up.

The Stench of Lies

"There's nothing that I detest more than the stench of lies". The older I get, the more I understand this line from "Apocalypse Now". This case has been continually hampered by the stench of lies. They are like tares that have been sown among the wheat. The lies continue even to this day and the effect is pretty much the same.

The first lies were the witholding of the fact that there was a serial rapist attacking victims in east Sacramento. The next lies came with the release of the phony "artist's conception" and "psychological profile" of the EAR. Then there were the lies about whether the VR was also the EAR.

Then the lies about the Goleta cases not being connected to the EAR. Then the lies about Joe Alsip. Then the lies about the Irvine cases not being connected to the others.

After DNA cleared up any questions about the EAR being connected to Ventura and Irvine, the lies continued about whether the Goleta cases were connected and this board was used to both perpetuate and proliferate those lies.

DNA, thankfully, has put those lies to rest. Now the lies about TK also being the EAR/ONS continue unabated. The linking of the stepside pick-up to the EAR continues even though it has been pointed out that the composite sketch associated with the driver of the step-side pick-up A) looks nothing like TK and B) probably is not of the EAR.

Young EAR









The lies about the enhanced composte sketch continue unabated even though it has been pointed out that the sketch most likely IS NOT of the shooter of the Maggiores. So, even if that composite is of TK (it is not), it is not of the person who murdered the Maggiores (and who is believed to also be the EAR).

Dumber & Dumberer











The lies through the years have had the same result, to misdirect and confuse the investigation. Even the EAR/ONS, himself, would tell victims lies with the same purpose in mind: to misdirect and confuse the investigation.

I have spent the last 7 years attempting to figure just what the truth is. I share as much of those findings as I can but there are some on this board who are both resistant and contemptuous of the truth. They have contempt for both the truth and the victims of the EAR/ONS.

I cannot speak to their motivations but I can say this about liars: " 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Anyone who comes on this board and continues to mis-state case facts is a liar and he is doing the work of the "father of lies". And let's face it, the Devil has been on the EAR/ONS' side since day one.

I went and checked the newspaper articles from Visalia. The Pillsbury Doughboy was the first sketch published in the newspapers. The detailed sketch was published later. I posted this info some time ago. It might have been on the old board. The shooting occurred on 12/10/75 (if my info is correct). The date on the detailed composite is Jan 9, '75 which obviously is a mistake (if the detailed sketch came from McGowen which is what I was told). I have the article where the Doughboy sketch was published but unfortunately, I did not write down the publishing date. But the Doughboy sketch made it into the newspapers first.
I have the article, which is titled,"Police Seek Public Help To Identify Suspect," but I also don't have the date of the article. The first line, however, states, "This is an artist's drawing of a man being sought in last week's shooting at Visalia Police Detective William McGowen." It continues... "The sketch was based on a description provided by the officer. The suspect is described as being in his 20s, with light blonde hair, pale complection, short stubby fingers, 5-feet, 10-inches tall, and weighing about 180 pounds. He is thought to frequently wear a fatigue type jacket. He also is wanted for questioning in numerous ransack burglaries in Visalia in the last TWO YEARS. Police said they believe the man lives in the Mt. Whitney High School area, more specifically south of Highway 198 between Court Street and Demaree Road. The man may collect stamps and coins and is thought to live a normal life in the daytime and is frequently on the street during the early evening and nightime hours, officers said. He is not believed to be a known criminal. Police said citizens already have been providing information about possible suspects, but at this point, (???can't read the word", in addition to possible leads, would be the most helpful information. Sgt. John Vaughan or detective McGowen and Duane Shipley may be contacted. The telephone number is 734-2011. Anonymous tips may be given to police by calling 734-5302. Vaughan cautioned citizens not to approach the suspect, who is armed and considered dangerous.
Note: it sounds like this would make the beginning of the ransacker in 1973.

I told you that the one on the right, which you kept posting next to the Maggiore composite, was a detail-degraded, third-generation copy of the sketch on the left. And you ignored that and continued using the degraded copy (which was published in the newspaper and then apparently xeroxed before being scanned) to make your point.

So, (a) Arch has stated that the basis for this composite was the prime 'VR' suspect at the time, who has since been DNA-eliminated from the EAR/ONS crimes, and (b) the copy on the left is clearly the same material, simply adulterated by multiple generations. So, the copy on the left should not be used as a basis for anything. I am considering removing it from my compilation.

Visalia LE did their best to keep the Snelling murder in the public eye and tocmake their case to Sacramento that the Ransacker was EAR ONS. They ran Claude Snelling's murder in the Fresno Bee every week for several years.

This article appeared in the Fresno Bee on 9/7/1977, the day after the first Stockton. Note the smooth face and stubby fingers comments here:

To my knowledge, the detailed composite sketch didn't make it to the paper until May 18, 1977, the side by side with the Sacramento rape suspect.

THS Composite Sketches

There were two composite sketches used on the THS Investigates the ONS program purportedly of the EAR/ONS. We could never determine where these composites came from. Some of that mystery has been cleared up. Both composites came from Sacramento. (They were thought to have come from SoCal). The composite of the younger-looking suspect is associated with the yellow step-side pick-up mentioned in the SCSD department memo. It is possible that the younger EAR composite is, in fact, the EAR but then that would eliminate the 1977 composite sketch as being the EAR because the composites are clearly dissimilar and not of the same person.

It all depends on whether the person driving the step-side pick up was, in fact, the EAR. I would find it difficult to believe that the EAR would be seen in an area on 3 occasions prior to an EAR attack. The EAR was a ghost. So right now, I would be willing to say that the composite sketch of the younger person IS NOT of the EAR/ONS. But time will tell.

The older, long haired composite is associated with a 261 from mid-1978 that most likely is not connected at all to the EAR/ONS. There was a similarity in victimology but it is not from any known EAR attack. It is the composite that resembles Michael Bolton. (Thanks SOE, that was classic). In all likelihood, this person (as well as Bolton) is neither the EAR or TK.

This older person clearly is not the same person depicted in the sketch of the younger suspect associated with the step-side pick up.

If I get Arch--the episode 4/5 7:21 sketch = the SCSD yellow pick-up "Young" sketch.

The sketch shown in 4/5 6:50 (what we call "Michael Bolton") is from a rape (Arch says "261") in Sac which may not even be EAR.

An additional comment: the "1977 Composite" is currently thought to be EAR. It's on Arch's ear-ons.com website and can be seen on Speakel's link below ---> in the EAR/ONS section, labeled "Sacramento, CA 1977".

The other sketches below simply show up in the THS episodes. They are listed in case I got something wrong with understanding Arch's references.

That is a good question. Unfortunately, I do not have a good answer. A suspicious person matching the 1977 composite sketch was seen in 1976. I believe Port posted the 1976 composite sketch. The person in the 1976 composite sketch had longer hair but other than that, he looked like a twin of the person depicted in the 1977 composite sketch.

The person associated with the step-side pick up was seen prowling elsewhere (near the American River College, I think) on another occasion. He could just be another burglar/prowler with no association to the EAR crimes other than being seen in the area.

The 1977 composite sketch has a resemblance to the Maggiore composite sketch (the first one released on 2/16/78. Not the enhanced sketch released on 4/16/78). So, I would put my money on the 1977 composite sketch.

That could change if we ever see this composite sketch done by the Davis PD.

Ironically, of the two chances that we had at seeing what the EAR/ONS really looked like, no composite sketches were done. The first chance occurred when the EAR was seen boogieing down the Sacramento levee after he fled from the scene of the 4/14/78 attack. The second chance occurred when the EAR was seen by the San Ramon witness.

Those are the only two times that I feel that witnesses actually saw the EAR without his mask (as opposed to just seeing a suspicious person who may or may not have been the EAR).

Special note: because the EAR was sporting a mustache on 4/14/78, that increases the likelihood that one of those composites from the Maggiore homicides is of him (or strongly resembles him).

That annotated list is pretty accurate. There is one composite sketch that is seen in the background of Inv. Pool's office (from the A&E CCF program) that I have not been able to determine where it came from or if it has any relevance to this case.

There is also the full body "Ninja Turtle" sketch that was shown on the A&E CCF program. It shows the EAR wearing a half-mask and his cross-rig web gear and what appears to be the navigator flashlight around his neck. It also shows the "bull tattoo" on his arm. I thought that came from #15 but it instead came from the Stockton case where the young witness saw the tattoo. (That should have been my first clue...)

THS composite sketches

Hi Arch, I obviously see these sketches differently, but I think they look almost identical except I always thought the older one was an aged enhanced version and I was so surprised when you said it had no connection. Do you think there is any possible way that perhaps the younger one was older that sketched possibly due to being seen at night? A lot of people say he was in his 20's others said 30's and one said 30's to 40's. What if EAR/ONS was 30 and at night he looked younger and in the daylight he looked older? Just a thought. The only reason I care is because if we can establish different sketches by different people at different times and they look alike that really will give us a good idea of what he looked like.

I do believe that the younger sketch was seen during the day. The older sketch was provided by a rape victim (not an EAR victim). I think most of us can agree that the EAR would never rape anyone without his ski mask and gloves on. Not 100% on that but 99% on that. Besides, the older sketch does not look much like the Half-Mask Sketch, IMO, so that further eliminates him as being the EAR. The M.O. of the rape was also not consistent with the EAR. And this has never been considered an EAR crime. I think the victimology was the only thing consistent. But it is out there in case anyone recognizes him.

Not 100% on the gloves but certain that he was not wearing a ski mask. That is how the victim was able to provide the details for the composite.

i dont understand how any of them are productive in this case?ive noticed a few posters who have put alot of hard work into revising yearbooks firstly in my opinion the wrong graduating year a secondly you are looking at thousands of faces trying to look for someone who may resemble a sketch done 30plus years ago that probably dosent even come close to the ear.witness composites are notoriously vaque.when it comes to all the composites im sorry but with respect your chasing your tail.in fact i would not even bother with any of them.more emphasis should be put on geography and his behaviour/words he used during attacks to rekindle someones mind on a person they once knew from sac.but in order for this to happen more information needs to be released to the public.as for the composites,i wouldnt bother.just my opinion,i dont look to offend anyone.

I agree it is a long shot on the composites. But based on recent info assuming it is all accurate we may finally have a composite that shows what this person may have looked like. This is only a starting point and one tool to be used in solving the puzzle. This is why it is critical to determine the age. This offender never believed this spree would last this long. Hence he had to have made some mistakes early on. And I believe he offended close to home. If I were a criminal I wouldn't drive 30 mins away to an area I knew nothing about to commit my first few crimes. You would be extremely nervous and want to be in a comfort zone, especially when breaking into a home an assaulting and raping someone. I hope that doesn't sound callous. I mean you would be pretty nervous. This is why pinning these first GE attacks down is critical. Using a photo from a yearbook is one way to start and may be a waste of times, but it is one of the few solid pieces of evidence we have to work with

I am glad that you two are confident about how this case is going to be solved and that, in your opinions, the composite sketches will not have anything to do with it. However, the first order of business is just clearing up where these composite sketches came from (which is why we are discussing them here). The second order of business is determining if any of these composite sketches have any bearing on the case. It is news to most of us here that the half-mask composite sketch is the ONLY reliable likeness of what the EAR/ONS looked like. It is useful for eliminating most (if not all) of the other composite sketches of suspicious persons.

So, these composite sketches have already caused an evolution in our understanding of the case. It is a useful way to ballpark what this creep looked like around 1977-78. The composite sketches are also useful in determining whether or not these cases are connected to the Visalia Ransacker case or the Maggiore murders (both of which I continue to have my doubts).

So, while it might be a waste of your time deliberating about them, I have found this information to be quite enlightening and is probably the most useful information that I have come across in the last 7 years of looking into this. This information could have saved me a lot of time in terms of eliminating suspects who had little resemblance to the half-mask sketch while at the same time allowing me to focus on those who did.

It also would have bolstered the belief these other cases are probably not connected. I have been coming to that conclusion independent of these mismatched composite sketches but now knowing which composite sketch is actually of the EAR/ONS, it only adds to my suspicion.

Even in the worst of cases, composite sketches have provided some insight into what an offender looked like (to the victim or witness at the time). They are more useful for eliminating suspects. We will be able to judge the accuracy and reliability of the composite sketch only after the EAR/ONS is identified.

The half-mask sketch is but one of the many puzzle pieces falling into place which will assist in identifying the EAR/ONS. There is no piece of the puzzle that is either insignificant or "a waste of time".

Just to add some positive glossy sheen to what you said......it doesn't matter which side of the fence people are with regard to the composites , the positive thing out of this is that all the stuff (regarding the composites) has been sorted out and the fact has now been separated from the fiction and we can get on with analyzing facts.This to me is positive and a step in the right direction . The unfortunate thing is that this could not be sorted out before all the documentaries in this case - a lot of people out there who saw the TV documentaries on EAR will be stuck with the false composites that have been chimed out . The good thing about small steps in the right direction is that , eventually as we take more small steps we will find that we have gone very far in the right direction when we look back at this later......

Arch- thank you for chiming in. I feel you and a few others will be the major reason this case is solved. I think your concise feedback is needed and critical to this board. Of course everyone has great points and it is great to see lately that people are not taking things personally when someone disagrees with their opinion. We all need to feel free to throw ideas into the hat. It may be that one of them opens the door to catching this criminal. I know from experience it will help the victims families if closure can be found. There is nothing worse than having a family member murdered and not knowing who did it.

While EAR was offending it would have been pretty bold (or stupid) for some garden variety prowler/burglar to hit East Sac. I fact news reports at the time said the crime rate in East Sac went down to just about zero. Point being if somebody saw a prowler the chances were better than average it was EAR.

Timeline of EAR attacks

So I have had this hunch since the beginning that EAR ONS didn't move from Sac area until Goleta attacks. For some reason when I read that he was gathering items to move it didn't make a whole lot of sense. He doesn't seem like the type of guy to fill his house with stolen items and use them as everyday appliances. Trophies, though yes.

But looking at the timeline, it is as if he starts bouncing the attacks around just to confuse LE. Also, in the beginning there was a bit more earlier rapes in the PM's around Sac. Granted he hit all over the place...but as he started changing counties the times consistently seem to be a little bit later, plus less frequent. After the Davis, Modesto and into Contra Costa I don't think he hit before 2AM. It could very well be that I am overthinking it...but I feel he was doing much more driving in the later attacks.

This would be in line with Conquistador's theory - that EAR commuted to the bay area attacks b/c of the heat in RC and also to lead LE to believing that EAR had left the area. Another interesting oberservation by Conquistador was that many of the bay area attacks took place on weekends.

Anything We Can Lock In On?
I haven't crunched the numbers on the specifics of the day and time of the EAR's attacks. Is there anything that eliminates the EAR as a Monday through Friday 9 to 5er?

No, though if he were a 9-to-5er, he wasn't getting very much sleep.

And if you think about it, the younger you are the more energy you have. I know at 30 I had 10 times the energy as 40 and so on. Which leads me to believe he was 23 to 25 when his attacks started. By 86 he was burnt out. Not really a shocking revelation but at 25 I could work all day stay out all night and work again. The older we get we can do that once in a while before we reach burn out....sorry for the weak nsight.

I think that is a valid observation supported by most criminal psychologist studies on serial offenders. There are always anomalies but they are the exceptions to the rule.

I read Sudden Terror a long time ago but I forget a lot of the details. Was there any decline in the amount of time spent in the house as the attacks progressed? This could answer that he was in fact commuting and wanted/had to be back by a certain time. I would also guess that the longer he stayed in a house suggests he was more comfortable with that particular area.

I also remember him saying something to a victim about "having to wait until my parents leave, so I can go home" ... whether that was a fact or fiction it seemed like a weird thing to say to a victim. Maybe he worked a night job with little supervision and if he came back to early his parents/roomates/wife/whoever would ask questions..

Correct me if i am wrong, but as far as i remember my recent read of ST, the longest stay in the victims homes were in the SAC area. He walked away into the night from his 3rd (failed) attack with no pants on, seen by a witness. Very unlikely that he had a long way to travel. According to ST the EAR watched one of his future victimes over a lenghty time out of a window of his residence (this could be a fictional encounter) and most detectives thought that he lived nearby. So when he began to commute to his crime scenes outside SAC, his time to stay in the houses decreased... Most serial offenders start their crimes surprisingly close to home bevore they start to widen their target zones.

That is an interesting observation regarding the length of time the EAR spent in his victims house. There probably is some correlation between the length of time the EAR spent in a victim's home and how comfortable he felt in the area. I think that there is also a correlation between how uncertain the EAR was that someone would be returning home and him hanging outside in the backyard (or even forcing the victim into the yard).

In some cases, he was certain that no one was going to return. Other times, he was not certain at all and was on edge. It might provide some insight into how much pre-rape intel the EAR had gathered on his victims. The ones in which he gathered more intel on might indicate some type of connection to that victim or vice versa.

Thanks for the info there. As far as cars go, can somebody fill me in, if they remember, how many cars he stole from victims? This was weird to me hearing that considering what a risk and how it isn't in his MO at all. Maybe his bike had a flat? lol. How far away did the stolen vehicle(s) end up?

Another interesting thing I was looking at in the Walnut Creek and Concord attacks. I believe the Concord attacks were very close to Concord John Muir Hospital and Walnut Creek a couple right next to John Muir Hospital Walnut Creek. You can literally see the hospital from a couple of WC attacks. I wonder if he knew the procedure of LE transporting the victim to hospitals right after for an exam. Maybe he watched, or was present when they were brought in. Nobody would be looking for him there...

One of the teenagers who was playing outside one of the EAR attacks would later become one of Gerald and Charlene Gallego's murder victims. Sad to think that she had no idea nor did her friends that less than a year later she would be brutally murdered. g

Posters here have noticed that in his role as ONS in Orange County, he "seemed" to have some sort of connection to hospitals. That hospital connection may also apply to Sac, but not sure. In Sac, the big connection there "seemed" to be universities and possibly home construction.

Speakel, thanks for clarification! So i was wrong assuming that EAR felt more comfortable in Rancho Cordova an spent more time with the victims. Just by the way: 2 or more than 3 hours in EAR´s presence, being repetedly assaultet and terrorized must have felt like an eternity to the victims. I´m trying to imagine how the surviving victims lived on with that horrible experience?
Perhaps Arch is right and the length of EAR´s attacks depended of how intense and accurate his recon work actually was.When EAR became ONS and with one exception (faild first Goleta) left no survivors, no one can tell how much time he spent in the houses. I doubt that he invaded and killed in a "blitz" attack (often mentioned by SoCal investigators). If he simply blitzed his victioms, he would have missed his power/cotrol games with the victims. Power/control games seemed part of his signature, like the bondage fetish was. I still wonder what part of significant EAR signature is still being held back by LE. What i know of police procedure, there will be a distinctive part of signature that still is held back info.

I read somewhere on here that EAR/ONS stalked nurses. Along with him being seen wearing surgical type masks and carrying a doctors bag. Maybe his mother was a nurse? But the medical theory seems to have some promise.

To All Possible Witnesses

I fondly address all of you "lurkers" out there. You have some reason(s) to lurk here and believe me, we welcome you to continue. I am hoping that some of you scan our boards because you have a re-occuring thought or glimpse of a memory that has stuckwith you for many years. That thought is worth listening to again.

In my case, I have either lived in or gone to school in most of the areas that ONS/EAR has committed crimes in during the period of time in question (mid 70's to mid-80's). I have also worked in LE in most of these areas during the time in question. I have seen many things while shopping, dining, visiting friends, going to movies, etc. and realized some significance of what I saw later on. Here is a brief example: I was driving down the road in my own car going to a picnic in a rural park. I saw a man next to a vehicle bent over at the side of the road. I thought he was looking at his tire. Within minutes of my arrival at the picnic, the whole hillside at that location went up in smoke. He was an arsonist who had started a brush fire. Though allegedly a "trained observer" that observation was totally lost on me at the time.

Review the postings on this site and visit the ONS/EAR websites noted here also. Scan your memories for anything at all that you think might be even remotely of interest with regard to these cases and post them here. There are many here who have worked for years on these cases and know more than LE at this moment. Your insight(s) may be relevant. Don't sanitize your thoughts with regard to your recollections-in other words don't think, "oh how dumb, I am not going to write that."

Now, of course, I am inviting all sorts of people here who may not be legitimately interested in solving these cases but rather in perpetuating a hoax. Please refrain as this is serious business with countless lives having been affected by this perpetrator(s).

DO NOT NAME NAMES-if you know a NAME, feel free to send it via private message to any of us posting on the board. Post a description of what you saw, when you saw it, why it seemed strange to you, etc. so that the many of our "heads" can consider it.

Also, please RESPECT THE RULES OF THE BOARD and AETV.

Definitely, this is a long shot-but maybe all we need is one well placed "long shot." Thank you.

I believe he also mentioned his mother's family receiving crank calls and that their home location was not far from several other EAR attacks. He mentioned foot prints outside his mother's bedroom window, as well. Sandia read it as well, maybe she remembers more....

The poi had "stared down" eastsacguy's future mother through the window and she ran out of the room.

I remember he said their German Shepard bit the poi and that is why they felt it was suspicious when their dog was hit and killed by a car (a few days? weeks? later). However, the person that hit the dog, stopped and pulled the dog off to the side of the road. (That part sounds to me like it might just have been an accident because if you intentionally killed someones dog would you get out of your car to pull him off the the road?)

The poi matched the exact description of EAR/ONS. There had been lots of activity in the neighborhood and crank calls.

I recall he said they were not that afraid because there were a lot of people living in the house: his future mother, grandmother and two uncles.

I didn't get any new information from his post, (that I picked up on anyway), BUT I am trying to remember if he mentioned the poi getting into a car and, if so, was there a description of the car? I would like to think I would recall that, if he mentioned it, except my eyes were glazing over from being on the computer too long and I was pretty tired.

I can't recall anything else at the moment.

I don't believe there was any mention of the POI getting into, or driving, a car. He later found his dog, which had bit the interloper, dead as a result of a hit-and-run. From how it appeared, the driver had stopped and moved the dog from the street to the side of the road. There was no direct connection made between this event, and the previously described interloper (it was implied that the poster believed these events to be related). When I read this, I dismissed the events as unrelated (on the basis of, it would be hard to stage or plan something like that).

I believe the poster also described his grandmother having been approached by a motorist brandishing a gun, who attempted to get her into a vehicle, but was unsuccessful as the grandmother fought him off and escaped.

teacher would call you in... and when you went in... you were told
a "story" by the person who went in before you... and then you had to
relate this "story" to the person after you.... until it went from the first
person to the last....?? anyone ever do that experiment in school?

The point of the exercise being that by the time the "story" had reached
the last person... it no longer resembled the "original story"....

I hope Mr. eastsacguy comes back to the discussion board...

Memory is a tricky thing.

If he never comes back... his story might end up being about corn dogs, John Merrick,
and Zeta Reticulans...

Growing up in terror in Sacramento

Hi, I'm new here. I was just a kid growing up in Sac. during EAR's reign of terror. But, the vivid memories of those times stay with me to this day. This guy was the boogie man to me and my friends. My older brother and I lived with my divorced mom during those years. And I'll never forget her finding strange footprints in the backyard. Cautiously walking throught the house, her checking every possible hiding spot, baseball bat in hand. Stuff like this happened way too often. The thing that made it very creepy is that he struck in locations that were located just houses down from where we lived. Scary coincidence. We lived on Sand Bar Circle, where he attacked the couple and told them to tell the pigs he was going to kill the next victims. Then, we moved to La Riviera Drive, where he also struck. The memories of ski masks and those scary looking sketches haunted me always. I think it was especially worse for me because I was pretty much a latch key kid, alone and hearing noises. And I'll never forgive my jackass older brother who thought it would be funny to don a ski mask and rip down the hallway full speed at me. Great thing for a ten year old. Geez. And no my brother wasn't EAR, he was only fifteen. But anyway- for some reason I always made this weird connection with the bad guy in the "Dirty Harry" movie, to EAR. It wasn't just the ski mask, either. Just whenever I thought of EAR and who he really might be, I always pictured that creepy guy in Dirty Harry, leaning over Eastwood, speaking through clenched teeth about killing the girl. I wonder if EAR was a fan of that movie. This thought was especially bolstered when Crompton's book mentioned how EAR hissed when he spoke. When did "Dirty Harry" come out? 1975?

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who would love to put a switchblade knife into
Mr. EAR's leg.

I think the villain in that movie might have been inspired by The Zodiac

Killer. The killer in DIRTY HARRY is named SCORPIO.

Ah, that's right, Scorpio. That charachter was an obvious reference to Zodiac. Forgot bout that. Although, if the charachter was referring to Zod, maybe he should have been wearing black horn rimmed glasses when leaning over Clint. Lol. Somehow not as terrifying.

Do you remember the news broadcasts? The gun sales going up?

How about the town hall meeting incident? Did you hear about that back
then?

What were some theories as to who people thought this guy was? Military?

Were you and all your neighbors really paranoid back then?

EAR-ONS and Dirty Harry

I thought of Dirty Harry when I read a particular passage from Crompton's book, p. 215:

“Don’t look over this way or I’ll kill you,” a voice broke the stillness. “Roll over on your stomach. Do you know what a .45 magnum is? I’ll blow your brains all over the room with it if you don’t do what I tell you,” the voice growled through clenched teeth.

Compare that to this famous dialogue from Dirty Harry:

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Aaron- I didn't keep newspaper clippings or anything. Being so young then, EAR terrified me. I didn't want to remember it. But, no doubt, I have recollections of many conversations the adults had about EAR. And you could not avoid the newscasts (good old Dick Cable- anchorman) or the articles. I do not remember there being a theory of him being military (at that time, but it was early on). I do know of the town hall incident, but not at that time. Although I attended and lived near Del Dayo elementary school, and I remember there being meetings there about EAR. As for the Sand Bar Circle incident, I was just houses down. I used to play wiffle ball with friends right in fromt of that house.I remember there being rumors at the time that the victim had her nipples cut off. I also remember a very elaborate alarm system (for 1970s) going up on that house shortly after attack. All of those houses on that block had the levee and the American River bike trail directly behind them. It would be your backyard fence, and ten yards away the levee. One could stand on that levee and peer directly into any of those houses. And beyond that levee was a very large, complex American River Bike Trail system that led to a foot bridge that would take you across the American River to Rancho Cordova (which was often referred to as the other side of the tracks. The Carmichael side was much wealthier). It was a perfect surveillance and getaway system. Interesting to note- the Sherriffs Training Academy is located almost directly behind the victims house, on the other side of the levee, within the grounds of the American River bike trail. Although, I can't honestly remember if the academy was there at the time of the attack.

Oh, and I remember everyone talking about the dishes on the back trick right after Sand Bar Circle. People always talked about that. They talked about how they would get around that, etc. As for the footprints found at our sliding glass door, it may have been totally innocent. But, people always looked for those things. Having that levee and river just yards from the back of your house made you feel so vulnerable. It was so easy to envision how one could simply hop a fence in the dead of night, come through the glass door or window, and hop it to escape into acres of thick brush and wildlife. Not to mention the relatively short jaunt to the footbridge that took you to another zip code in a matter of minutes.

Scorpio?

The sun sign of Scorpio runs from October 22nd - November 22nd. It rules sex, and death; an alternate symbol is the Phoenix. Do any POIs have a DOB in the Scorpio range?


SOE: Does your date trending for his attacks indicate a DOB in that range? Someone said a profiler? said he would have given himself a present for his birthday?

Birthdays and tattoos
I've looked at ten or so well-known serial killers and examined the dates of their murders in relationship to their respective birthdays, and in none of those cases did their appear to be any significant relationship between their birthdays and their murders.

My initial comment about the EAR-ONS sporting a tattoo has not been acknowledged. If only one victim of many described a tattoo, and it was under hypnosis, is it possible that the EAR-ONS either did not actually have a tattoo, or that perhaps it was a "temporary" tattoo designed to produce a misleading description?

Personally... I don't think Mr. EAR-ONS had a tattoo.... it was a ruse...

Someone said he drew it on his arm to purposefully have the victim(s) see it ...

It was done to distract, to misdirect, to have the victim(s) remember a transient
detail that could be washed away after the assault.

Mr. EAR-ONS was heard whispering to a possible partner-in-crime.... I don't
buy that as well..... He was alone.

He made a victim promise that she didn't see a van down the street.

There was no van down the street.

A victim remembers a tattoo.

What she remembered was a "drawing" of a tattoo on Mr. EAR-ONS' arm - a
drawing he put there... and after all these years we're talking about it... the
desired effect resonates even after all these years.

But I may very well be wrong.

You know those Crackerjack sticker type of tattoos? Do they have fake tattoos
like that that are really big?

Oh, and I remember everyone talking about the dishes on the back trick right after Sand Bar Circle. People always talked about that. They talked about how they would get around that, etc. As for the footprints found at our sliding glass door, it may have been totally innocent. But, people always looked for those things. Having that levee and river just yards from the back of your house made you feel so vulnerable. It was so easy to envision how one could simply hop a fence in the dead of night, come through the glass door or window, and hop it to escape into acres of thick brush and wildlife. Not to mention the relatively short jaunt to the footbridge that took you to another zip code in a matter of minutes.
Wow very interesting information indeed .........I hate to say this but EAR chose a perfect location for his nefarious deeds

On October 21st, 1982, EAR made a phone call to his 24th victim.

Hadn't seen this posted before...

From what I've read, that's the only EAR-ONS activity between S/D and Janelle Cruz, a little less than 5 years.

Thats a good question I was thinking there must be something that occured during the attacks on those victims or maybe somehing about them that this guy could not get over hence he called them either to scare them or maybe he was infatuated with those females in particular.

I read on this board once that up to 9 different neighbers of a victims home have been called after an attack. Thats alot of houses. He was definitely into the prank call thing.

AND he probably kept the personal items as trophies or spoils of war, If more publicity had been given to some of the items he stole maybe someone close to him would have made a connection and called in with a tip.

The prank calling thing got me wondering did detectives look closely into people with histories of prank calls back then?

I have the addresses, and what you, 222 Unit, are suggesting fits the VR. The second address would be on the southwest corner of the Visalia Ransacker's areas, just blocks from where the gun was stolen that killed Claude Snelling in 1975. So, I am looking forward to further discussions with you, especially what our local LE told you regarding the fingerprints. I'm hoping that Cody W. wasn't the source of information to you as several of the things he told me were BS.

Great question....but I've been working with the idea that he was paroled out and didnt serve out his entire sentence, possibly is caught breaking parole some time after the Cruz murder, and sent back to finish out his original sentence. If one came up for parole after serving a minimum of 50% of their stretch back then, then we'd probably be looking for someone with a lengthier sentence....say 8-10 years maybe? Of course, it will be for something that didnt send up a red flag with the authorities and the county of offense most likely would have been Santa Barbara, Orange, or Ventura.

Well according to caseprofiler he is organizing gang rapes in Los Angeles nursing homes, so Veterans homes would be the next place to look. Did you post the phone numbers so some one could actually make phone calls? Would they call and ask if earons was there? Or maybe ask if there was a white blue eyed male approx. 6 ft. tall that was making inappropriate advances to the other elderly patients? I can image that would lead to thousands of new POI's. Ha ha. Every nursing home I've ever visited has white male patients making inappropriate advances at female patients....

Well, I think what EARS/ONS was doing was far beyond inappropriate advances. I was more in the line of questioning Administrators who have 10 year history with the facility, If there was anyone that stands out that ever gave them reason to think a person seemed a reasonable suspect. Remember someone may know something and not realize they do. The line of questioning may trigger a memory or suspicion that never suggested them to think otherwise. Cleaning out a room after death finding unusual tokens etc.
No need to apologize just find ONS if your so smart.

Visalia attacks VS EAR attacks


Visalia attacks VS. EAR

In Visalia there were approxamately 125 homes ransacked and burglarized from April of 1974 until January of 1976. He preferred east to west streets two to one over north-south streets 58-28. His activities were predominately Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Took money in cases, threw female underwear in a more exagerrated manner than other clothes in 45 cases. Opened more than one point of entry so as to have ways to escape. Screens in the same manner as EAR attacks. Left items on the inside of doors as a warning or alarm. Removed money from piggy banks or takes banks and leaves other more valuable items. Ransacked bedrooms, took articles of female underclothing, cosmetics and or one earring from pairs. He stole weapons, all pistols with many other firearms left in plain view. He took 22 ammo, 12 guage shells, or 20 gauge shells. He also tore or took photos of girls or children. Oh and I should not forget to mention the blue chip and green stamps that he took when they were present in the homes. There was fingerprints that left evidence of VR putting lotion on his hands. There were photos torn up and scattered about. EAR had torn photos and one victim found them behind her couch a few weeks after the crime. I think this should provide sufficient evidence that these are the same individual.

In all the VR-EAR and ONS crimes many valuable items, such as money, jewelry and numerous other items that are left in plain sight and less valuable tokens taken. There were fingerprints left in most of the cases. As in EAR cases, some items that were taken were recovered at later scenes. Another significant act that EAR did is leave a bottles of lotions at the scene. This was also done in Visalia.

Other items taken:

T-shirts, pajamas, rings, cell flashlights, coins, necklace, a gold locket with a photo of a baby, perfume, lotions and too many to list.

I will look further as I know I have other information about the similarities rather than the differences. I have no investment in EAR being the VR but I do think there are striking similarities that cannot be ignored. We will only know when there is some resolution in this case. But I certainly cannot ignore the fact that I think there are more things that stand out as a possibility that VR is EAR than not. Reminding everyone this is just my opinion. g



If you compare the cases in Sacramento it is difficult to not see the similarities in just about everything VR did. I think this should give us some things to discuss. g

I think if were going to discuss the EAR vs VR we should focus on the dissimilarities like drifter mentioned. We've got similarities coming out the wazoo now. Kind of a waste of time to keep piling them on.

It is important to note that most of the similarities are actual facts about their known behaviors and most of the dissimilarities are based on physical descriptions of eye witnesses. IMO they really are not very dissimilar when you realize and take into account just how inaccurate eye witness statements often are.
