I lean closer to thinking his job was being the EAR on a full time basis whether he was a "trust fund baby" or had a similar arrangement.....
This is an angle that I think has a LOT of merit...possibly one that investigators initially discussed or pursued? One of the stumbling blocks a lot of us have is the issue of time management - how did EAR have all this time for stalking/prowling activities while maintaining gainful employment? Woofy has provided a possible (good probability, imo) answer to this question. EAR did not HAVE to maintain a full-time job, because he had other means of support due to a trust/estate/whatever. So he was more or less left to his own devices. Possibly, he was living on his own thereby avoiding the watching eye of parents/relatives (maybe the nearest relatives were deceased or had moved out of the area?)
Back to the original post, with respect to a possible military/LE connection...there just so many possibilities. EAR could have been in ROTC but chose not to enlist, dropped out of college. Certainly a number of the skills exhibited could be learned through scouting or similar programs, although involvement in scouting tends to point a young person in a different direction. Maybe he was rejected by Military/LE/FB... seems if that was the case, someone would remember him as "that guy." Could have completed training and worked as a part-time security guard?
I'm sure there's a lot of other "programs" where some of the skills he exemplified could have been obtained, just thinking of ones that seem common/obvious. Although in the case of EAR, maybe we need to look for the less obvious possibilities.
Sorry if it seems like I'm talking in circles, I do think there's some background where he learned some techniques. And I do NOT think he needed to hold down a 9-5 job, which afforded him ample time for prowling/stalking activities.
