Background voices on EAR recording solved!

A match was found between the "Gonna kill you" recording background voices and the voices from the Monday Night Movie, "Breaking Up," which was airing the night of January 2, 1978, when the EAR called the Contra Costa victim.

Saund and I gave it a listen, after I located a copy of the hard-to-find telefilm.

This recording of this EAR call has been on the net for years, at the EAR-ONS.com site; and later in 2013, it was published with Michelle Macnamara's L.A. Magazine article on the EARONS.

The telefilm is listed for airing at 9:00pm Pacific Time, in the tv schedule section of the January 2, 1978 local (Sacramento) newspaper (neutero provided).


After studying the movie audio and EAR recording, it can be stated with confidence, that the background voices are one and the same; they sync together.

What does this mean?

This means that the main voices that are heard in the background, behind the EAR's vocals, belong to this movie. It means that anything that can be heard on the EAR recording that matches the movie, has been solved, and now we are free to move on to identifying any other vocals or sounds that can be deciphered from the recording which do not belong to the movie.

These miscellaneous (non-movie generated) sounds could be real sounds coming from people or places. If they are, then they may be the key needed to unlocking the identity of the EARONS.

With the mystery (of those background voices on the EAR recording that belong to the movie) being solved, the bar to discovery has been been set considerably higher now, as the harder to hear(reach) noises in the background of the EAR recording are the ones that are left to be identified and matched to their sources.

Chief Paul Holes of the Contra Costa Criminal Forensics department has been notified of the findings. As I posted here a couple of weeks ago, he will be sourcing the EAR recording, and now movie audio, to the group of blind persons he has assembled to help break down the EAR recording.

Because all of the sources used are accessible and available to the public, and the findings are clear and obvious, there was no reason to keep the findings a secret, and I have chosen to post them here.  There will be more to come on the findings in the next few days.

There is no doubt that most of the background voices in the "Gonna Kill You" recording are from this movie.

What is fascinating is how people (myself included) "heard" things that conformed to their preconceptions.  Quaser and others heard conversations concerning towing and auto repos.  Others heard what seemed to be hospital chatter.  I was so convinced that I heard a doctor's name that I located a doctor by that name and identified where he worked in 1978.  I then looked to link my POIs to that location.  It turns out that all that effort was wasted since it is not from a hospital, but from a stupid made-for-TV movie.  Dammit!

We all probably will cling to our preconceptions even without this recording as "proof" that we are right.  But it does remind us that we need to be open to all possibilities even as we form our opinions.  IMHO

Yeah; I mean it's a common psychological trick that we use all the time to make sense of things.
I also heard a name, I would have called it one of the clearest things I had heard in recording, at one point. I also looked this person up, and get this: he lived 5 mins from  Manuella's home, and 5 mins from Janelle's, and he was  located smack-dab in the middle of them both. Which brings up another thing that is even harder to explain than psychological processes, and that is how common it is to find outrageous coincidences when looking for a suspect to fit an unknown perp. 

2 more things regarding this recording: I got what was arguably the clearest bit of audio from the recording wrong. But I got a deeply buried vocal in the recording right, down to just one word that was slightly off; and I did it just by listening to the audio enough times.
 I put the recording on a loop and listened from earbuds for hours at a time. Because, while I mentally checked out after a while, i knew a part of my mind was still listening to the recording, and still working to make sense of what i was hearing. When I tried that through conscious listening, I ended up filling in the gaps with what I thought would make sense. When I didnt pay attention to it but just had it on autopilot, my brain was cycling though different configurations of what it was that I was really hearing, and some of it stuck, and worked.  And my advice to anyone scared to listen to the recording is put it on for a day while you work. It'll strip away the scary mystique you are affording this guy, and you will see how ridiculous he actually sounds.

And the other thing was, when I first started listening to the background voices, I thought it was exactly what it turned out to be: a tv show with an actress from the 60s. I thought that because Lee Remick's delivery has the affectations of , well, of exactly who she was;ie, an actress who learned her craft in the late 50s & thru the 60s, and that era has its own acting affectations, including how they delivered their lines.  I got pulled away from that idea through exchanging ideas with other people who thought they were 'real' and not 'fictional' voices.  I wasnt immune to catching someone else's enthusiasm, and thats how you get influenced. So sometimes following your gut is a good thing and you should have more faith in yourself. Just dont be blind to logic and fact, and be willing to adapt to what you learn even though it goes against your conjecture or what you want it to be.

Please upload this as soon as possible so we can then work on isolating the parts of the background noise that aren't from the TV. In a way this is good, if we can get an exact copy of the movie, we know that any sound that doesn't appear in the movie but is on the call, is coming from the background of either the caller or the victim.

It's just sad that individual private citizens had to go to so much work to find this out. I mean, it is claimed that the FBI looked at the tape, but if they already knew this, why is Paul Holes over in Contra Costa getting together with blind people to analyze the background noise of the tape, completely unaware that much of that noise is coming from a TV movie?

Are LE really so incompetent that an actual cold case investigator who is working on the case hasn't been informed? No insult to Mr Holes, I'm grateful that there is at least someone in LE willing to take an actual proactive interest in the case. It's just annoying that the FBI may have figured this out back in the 70s but refused to tell us.

How was closure brought to victims by identifying background noise?

A victim has expressed thanks for this small but vital piece of knowledge about a key piece of public evidence. "Closure" might be strong, but let's not start this, okay? This is a good development. Bravo to all involved.

Sorry, but your question, especially the "background noise" part, sounded testy. It seemed like you were zeroing in on a nitpick of language, moving past everything else. If I misread that, I honestly apologize. So let's move on.
