Trailside Killer David Joseph Carpenter

David Joseph Carpenter was found guilty in a series of murders known as the Trailside Killings in Marin (Cinderfella. Tamelpias and Point Reyes) and Santa Cruz. He would lurk about in remote areas waiting for a victim but he also attacked women that he had acquaintance with. Carpenter had been attacking women for decades and had been held in both state prison and mental facilities for his crimes.
Prior to the Trailside killing spree he had been in California State then Federal custody.
Interesting facts about David Joseph Carpenter:
- Sent to Preston Youth Authority at age 14 for molesting two cousins paroled 12/1948.
- Bludgeoned an early victim with a hammer in 1960 attack(Lois DeAndrade: Coworker/San Francisco)
- Incarcerated 6/17/1970 (Folsom)-2/28/1977(Vacaville) California State Prisons
- Incarcerated 3/1/1977-(Sacramento County Jail & McNeal Island, WA) - 5/21/1979 (Lompoc) on Federal parole until 10/28/1982. Paroled to halfway house in San Francisco.
- Rape charges were dropped for early crimes and convicted of robbery, kidnapping and crimes of violence
- Suspect in many burglaries
- Had eyes that were described as blue and hazel
- Kept a rape kit that included rope and wire bindings
- Sometimes slept in deserted homes
- Scouted locations and carefully selected attack sites
- bed wetter into early teens
- abused small animals
- Mother very domineering and beat him
- Mother would lie to protect him
- Mother made him take ballet as child so loved ballet as adult
- Father alcoholic
- Very manipulative
- Very intelligent
- Cried on the witness stand during his second trial when talking about being successful.
- Wore a size 9 1/2 shoe but bought a 10, believed, to throw off investigators
- Had type A blood
- Had a severe stutter that tended to dissipate during attacks
- He had noticeably little hair on his hands making them appear really pale. Does that mean he had little hair on his legs too?
- Used both a knife and gun during attacks
- Would get women to have sex with him that was consensual
- model prisoner and parolee
- used multiple cars both owned and borrowed
- Had accomplices at times
- tried to frame another for murders by giving him the .38 used in some of the murders
- Told others that safety deposit boxes and storage units were good places to keep weapons and loot from robberies
- Some victims found with only one earring
- Returned to one crime scene documented due to new shoe prints found days later with same shoe
- Said he was the Zodiac killer
He is still alive at San Quentin. He is now 85 years old.
