I'd like to forward some information that I know and might help a lot of you fill in a couple more pieces to the puzzle as to the reason why the EAR-ONS was so successful in his endeavors and possibly where you might finally nab him. I'm sure this theory has been forwarded before, but as a cyclist myself, I'm sure that I can tell you all a lot of things that I know that he knew.
Although tempted, I will spare you all my theories on his criminal psychology as you've probably heard even better ones by now and from even more educated sources on the matter so will try to stick to what he used to carry off these crimes.
First off about myself.. I love to bike in order to stay in shape. I've rode bikes for all of my life, from my first Schwinn to my first Huffy Thunder Road dirt bike, to my first 10 speed, to my present 21 speed Hybrid and have biked very seriously at times too as our still un-named nemesis has. It was when I heard a couple of particular details at this page: www.lamag.com/longform/in-the-footsteps-of-a-killer/ and on youtube that it dawned on me what the guy was probably doing all along and why it worked so well as a convenient vehicle for his most lethal game.
The above link hints at the fact that he was a planner.. You bet he was.. He was a meticulous planner and his bike fit perfectly into that scheme as I'll discuss below.
But please do not underestimate or downplay him as I've heard some police sources off-handedly doing. As if he was some kind of cowardly weakling. No way.
You see, it takes balls, to go through people's back yards at night where a man with a shotgun might be prone to put several pellets in your body. Where there are pit bulls, rotweillers, and dobermans eager to make you their steak dinner.
Then you have the uncertainty of what the people in the house are going to be doing when you arrive. You might know their patterns but you don't know when somebody is having a hard time sleeping or is up to take a pee who is within arms reach of their own hand gun.
Therefore, doing this in heavily populated residential areas must have taken him a lot of time to perfect. Especially if he planned on being a repeat offender to a crime scene multiplying his chances of being caught. And that brings me to how his biking fit that like a glove.
Biking.. The suspect has been seen riding a bike away from crime scenes. The suspect was known to have huge calves. Here lies everyone's biggest clues as to who he was... The bike is seen multiple times in conjunction with his crimes.. And the calve muscles are the convicting clues that must never be overlooked. There are very few ways in which to develop these muscles to be larger than normal and still fit the profile of this case.. Never lose sight of the calves and what they tell you about the perpetrator.
You get huge calves from the constant peddling of your feet. A normal recreational cyclist will not develop big calves but a hard core one will due to the constant miles that his legs exert themselves to.
Let me explain the range of a typical serious cyclist. They will peddle (I know this from experience) anywhere from 25 to 50 miles a day.. And some do even more.
That means that this guy could have come from a very long distance to do his prowling on the first phase. His pre-break-ins on the second phase... And then the grand finale a few days later.
If you do the math. A car can travel 50 miles in one hour casually. A biker averaging 12 miles per hour will accomplish this in four hours.. And if he has a goal at the other end then can maintain a brisk 15 miles per hour pace to get there in just over three hours. And that's to cover 50 miles! This happens routinely in the world of cyclists I assure you.
There's so many advantages to using a bike instead of a car. Let me explain and please do listen carefully.
- Range. As mentioned above, people may be surprised to learn of the vast ranges that can be covered by the serious cyclist. 25-50 miles on average a day these people peddle and even further if you have a goal. This would allow him to travel from town to town if necessary taking him out of the typical area that you'd at first believe that he was from providing a cushion of anonymity for him. Much further if he had a automobile bike rack which would have increased his range many times over.
- Nonthreatening. When a cop sees somebody on a bike they typically think nothing of it. Now if he/she sees a car many are trained and inclined to run a license plate check. This guy probably knew this or lucked into this advantage.
- Ambiguity. When you see somebody riding a bike slowly through a neighborhood you typically think nothing of it. After all, you can't drag somebody or abduct them with a bicycle. The person moves on and you've forgotten about him seconds later. This works perfectly for somebody who wishes to case a neighborhood. Not so with a slow moving car.. That would draw attention. The type of attention that a predator wouldn't want. Therefore the bicycle would be his favored choice.
- Casing. You actually see a lot riding a bike.. Much more than you do from the boxed interior of a automobile which is inclined to move much quicker than a bike with several blind spots robbing you of many more details if you are there to observe. A bike works perfectly in that capacity even giving you an enhanced elevated view of up to 6 inches over your normal height due to the seat placement over the tires. You sit much lower in a car by the way.
-Travel load. This guy tended to travel light. He could have easily with a simple rear wheel storage carriage or handle bar carriage, carried his bag on the back/front wheel and gotten to the outer rim of a targeted neighborhood with a bike. He could have even used a backpack and peddled along unhindered.
-Stashing the bike. That same get-away bike can be hidden in some bushes, trees, a field, or even laid upon somebody's front lawn and it would have looked as normal as a flag upon a porch on July fourth for that matter.
-Ditching the bike. If the area became too hot or he knew that he was seen upon it fleeing, it can be thrown away easily into the above places and picked up days later if at all.. You can buy used throw-away bikes at garage sales just about every day in the summer time and they're dirt cheap in price. Now, he's a walking pedestrian instead of a cyclist ( a psychological trick of the eye for many as they might not make the connection and still be looking for a cyclist, not a pedestrian.).
From what I've read and the details given on youtube, this guy was a hardcore cyclist and used this traveling tool to his distinct advantage.
To the serious sleuths on this site, you might want to check the logs of biking competitions ( of which he would have had to given personal details to enter ) from this time period. The odds are that he has entered several of them and perhaps placed well at the finish lines to boot giving him further minor notoriety. This may indeed narrow your suspect pool to a significant degree with public records shining light on common names.. Names that other bikers would eventually know and descriptions that they would recognize.
There are people who put off some very spooky vibes.. I see it all the time when I go down the bike paths. These other bikers would be able to finger him given enough details because they too would have felt similar uncomfortable feelings around a nutter like him. Somebody with a distinct squeak in his voice as described by many of his victims.
I hope this helps you all in catching this broken soul.
