Here is a theory given the attack days, times in Rancho Cordova when he first started in 1976. The theory is, the EAR either worked at or attended the Sacramento 6 or Thunderbird Drivein from March until October 1976 Friday night through Sunday night.
Thunderbird drivein (now closed)
11091 Folsom Blvd.
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670

Sacramento 6 drivein (still open)
9616 Oates Rd.
Sacramento, CA 95823

First off, why would he work at a drive-in? Because it would fuel his rich fantasy life of raping and pillaging women and couples. He'd see young couple every weekend night getting cozy. After the 11pm or 1am movie ended, he could go attack. He may have just attended though.
Attacks in and around Rancho Cordova fitting this pattern during the early timeframe:
1 Friday June 18, 1976 4:00 AM 23 Paseo Dr. Rancho Cordova, CA
2 Saturday July 17,1976 2:00 AM 15 "Marlborough Way Carmichael, Del Dayo subdivision"
3 (foiled) Sunday August 29, 1976 3:20 AM "Malaga Way Rancho Cordova"
...
6 Saturday October 9, 1976 3:30 AM late teens La Loma Drive Rancho Cordova
7 Monday October 18, 1976 2:30 AM mother Kipling Carmichael/Del Dayo
8(aborted, maybe wrong victim) Monday October 18, 1976 11:00 PM 19 "Dawes/Malaga -- Los Palos Rancho Cordova"
And this attack, which was the first (I think) where a male victim was tied up:
16 Saturday April 2, 1977 3:20am ended 5:00am Richdale Way Orangevale 1st attack when a man was present, they had returned from a drive-in movie
Perhaps he had been building up the desire to attack couple all along and it's possible it was fueled at the driveins starting around 1976.
About half way between the Sacramento 6 and Thunderbird Driveins is Paseo Drive...
It's about 12 mins driveway between the 2 driveins, so maybe 6 minutes from either drivein to Paseo drive.
March - October was probably drivein season due to fair weather.
Ear had a thing for October attacks which would correlate to the end of drivein season.
