The victims of a thrill killer are generally strangers, but the killers may stalk them for a period of time before the attack in order to fuel the excitement of the hunt. The thrill killers derive intense satisfaction from the process of murder the acts leading up to the kill, seem to be more intense for them then the actual killing. They come to crave the euphoric adrenaline rush provided by stalking and capturing their victims. Most of the individuals are usually psychopaths so they rarely, if ever, suffer remorse for their murders. The primary motive of thrill killers is to induce pain or terror in their victims prior to killing them which provides intense stimulation and excitement. Stalking and hunting their prey becomes an addiction for them much like a narcotic drug.
Normally, the attack of a thrill killer is fast to the kill and there is no sexual aspect to the murder. Once the victim is dead, a thrill killer typically loses interest in him/her almost immediately. Postmortem mutilation or necrophilia is rarely engaged in by this type of serial killer. This pattern represents a stark contrast to hedonist lust killers such as the infamous Jeffrey Dahmer who love to engage in postmortem sexual activities. There is some evidence EAR may have masturbated postmortem in a murder or two.
The ultimate hedonist thrill killer was the unidentified predator who called himself “Zodiac” and operated in Northern California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. For the Zodiac Killer and other psychopathic thrill killers like him, the process leading up to the act of murder affords them the greatest satisfaction of their lives. Once the murder is committed the suspect is finished with this person, without the sexual component of rape or sexual assault.
Sacramento had its own thrill killer Eric Royce Leonard:
SACRAMENTO — A man described by authorities as a withdrawn loner was arrested Thursday in connection with the killings of six people, who were gunned down at close range at a local convenience store and a pizza parlor.
Sacramento County Sheriff Glen Craig said Eric Royce Leonard, 22, who lives near both shooting scenes, was arrested at his apartment about 9 p.m. after ballistics experts identified a .25-caliber pistol owned by his father as the weapon used in all six of the killings.
Earlier Thursday, investigators interviewed the suspect's father, who turned over the pistol.
"The father said he had known for a while that something was not really right," Sheriff's Sgt. Lena Derheim said in a telephone interview.
"His reaction was very docile, very staid, very stoic," Craig said of Leonard's demeanor. He described the suspect as a loner.
"He was the kind of person who wouldn't stand out in a crowd. He would be on the fringes of the crowd," added Sheriff's Lt. Ray Biondi.
Authorities said they had no motive. Earlier they had described the slayer they were seeking as a "thrill killer," who apparently murdered for personal satisfaction, because little cash was taken in the incidents.
Leonard was convicted of execution-style killing of six people in a Sacramento convenience store and at a pizza parlor in 1999, and sentenced to die, but something else happened in court.

A Sacramento man who drew widespread headlines when he raised his hand at a pretrial hearing and blurted out “I am guilty” was properly sentenced to death for six murders, the state Supreme Court ruled yesterday.
In a unanimous decision, the justices rejected the contention that Sacramento Superior Court Judge Thomas J. Cecil should not have allowed jurors at Eric Royce Leonard’s trial to hear about his incriminating comment at the hearing on his motion for change of venue, which was denied.
The crazy part is he killed those people with a .25 Caliber pistol, such a small caliber weapon to accomplish this task.
