NOV. 12, 2002 Belmont Shore Rapist was caught. Below is his MO.
The first DNA-linked attack occurred in Seattle in 1996 and his first DNA-linked attack in Belmont Shore, a district of Long Beach where the majority of the crimes occurred, was in January 1997, the police said. The victims varied: the youngest was 30 and the oldest was 74.
In the latest attack, the police said, the man crawled through a bedroom window in Long Beach around 1 a.m. With his face covered, he awoke the woman. A struggle ensued and she bit him on the hand. The attacker fled, and the woman called the police.
Responding quickly, the police cordoned off the neighborhood. They stopped a man on a bicycle and noticed a wound on his hand. He was arrested on charges of possessing a crack pipe. The police said the suspect was name Mr. Rathbun and he willingly gave a DNA sample and was released. After the tests linked him to previous rapes 32-year-old Filipino drifter, Mark W. Rathbun, was arrested on charges of burglary with intent to commit rape. They said he was linked to many of the rapes by DNA samples obtained when he was taken into custody on drug-related charges in Long Beach shortly after he was said to have attacked a woman as she slept. The police said they had positively linked Mr. Rathbun to 13 attacks through DNA evidence and fingerprints.
The Belmont Shore predator was known for jimmying his way into women's homes through windows and back doors. The women were always alone.Because the Belmont Shore Rapist disguised himself and waited in dark corners under the cover of night, he defied description and was able to elude the police. The methods of the particular crime are so similar, the authorities said they were convinced that Mr. Rathbun is also responsible for 18 attacks where no physical evidence was left.In the latest attack, the police said, the man crawled through a bedroom window in Long Beach around 1 a.m. With his face covered, he awoke the woman. !!!! And boom that's how it should work, the bad guy flees on a bicycle and is stopped by Police and arrested !!!
The Police then take DNA and match the bad guy to the other crimes, and off to prison he goes!
This is who the EAR case should have gone while in the early stages of the series, back in 1976 or 1977, without the DNA portion but you get my meaning.
