Between May of 1918 to October of 1919, the bustling city of New Orleans was hounded by vicious, ax-weilding psychopath known primarily by his epithet, as the Axe Man Of New Orleans. He was vicious in his attacks, offending in the victims own homes and as his moniker suggests, they were all killed with an ax. Not all the time was is brought to the home, but taken from the homeowners themselves. The murderer had an affinity for jazz-music, as portrayed in a purported communication sent to the press via Axe Man Of New Orleans:
Hell, March 13, 1919
Esteemed Mortal:
They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether that surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the Axeman.
When I see fit, I shall come and claim other victims. I alone know whom they shall be. I shall leave no clue except my bloody axe, besmeared with blood and brains of he whom I have sent below to keep me company.
If you wish you may tell the police to be careful not to rile me. Of course, I am a reasonable spirit. I take no offense at the way they have conducted their investigations in the past. In fact, they have been so utterly stupid as to not only amuse me, but His Satanic Majesty, Francis Josef, etc. But tell them to beware. Let them not try to discover what I am, for it were better that they were never born than to incur the wrath of the Axeman. I don't think there is any need of such a warning, for I feel sure the police will always dodge me, as they have in the past. They are wise and know how to keep away from all harm.
Undoubtedly, you Orleanians think of me as a most horrible murderer, which I am, but I could be much worse if I wanted to. If I wished, I could pay a visit to your city every night. At will I could slay thousands of your best citizens, for I am in close relationship with the Angel of Death.
Now, to be exact, at 12:15 (earthly time) on next Tuesday night, I am going to pass over New Orleans. In my infinite mercy, I am going to make a little proposition to you people. Here it is:
I am very fond of jazz music, and I swear by all the devils in the nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people. One thing is certain and that is that some of your people who do not jazz it on Tuesday night (if there be any) will get the axe.
Well, as I am cold and crave the warmth of my native Tartarus, and it is about time I leave your earthly home, I will cease my discourse. Hoping that thou wilt publish this, that it may go well with thee, I have been, am and will be the worst spirit that ever existed either in fact or realm of fancy.
The Axeman
People were so worked up over this letter that various people were having live jazz bands play in their homes or pubs, where they would remain for the entirety of the night. Others were even willing to take a shot at the mad man, leaving their doors open and waiting for him with firearms ready.
Michele 'Mike' Pepitone, pictured right, was attacked and slain in his sleep by a large individual wielding an ax on October 27, 1919. He was the third husband of his wife Esther, pictured right, who was awakened during the attack and saw the man flee from the scene. This crazed attack would mark the twelfth and final time that history had heard from a serial killer known as The Axe Man Of New Orleans.
This case actually caught my interest before that of the Zodiac early on in my teenage years... the idea that an individual could do such heinous things and reaching out to taunt but never get caught has long pre-dated that of EARONS or Zodiac or BTK.
Axe Man is actually getting some pretty good expression in the media these days, most recently in AMERICAN HORROR STORY. For a while, I was considering doing a special on him for YouTube before contemplating doing it about EARONS. This is a positive thing for our case because it shows that these moments of history, no matter how disturbing or ugly they may be, will never be forgotten. Granted, EARONS has DNA to back it's case up whereas the Zodiac can always be argued, BTK is done for and the Axe Man... well, they're now pointing the finger at a pharmacist named Joseph Momfre.
Mumfre was better known by his connection to Esther, who ended his life in self-defense during an altercation stemming from the disappearance of her previous husband Angelo Albano, that took place two years after Mike Pepitone's murder. He was a criminal who also had connections to various crimes including arson and armed robbery, as well as going by numerous aliases. Angelo had dissolved a partnership with Mumfre some time before his disappearance and Esther promptly approached him, asking for the whereabouts of her ex-husband.
Mumfre's response was rather dodgy, as it implied that he had not even known she was this man's wife but that he was being held for a ransom that would be disclosed on a later date. Two months later, an armed Mumfre appeared at the front door of Esther's home where she and her children lived. He demanded her jewelry before threatening to end her life the same way that he ended her husbands. She went to her bedroom and retrieved a handgun, which lead to the shootout that ended the life of Joseph Mumfre. Esther very fortunately survived an expensive trial that declared her actions were in self defense, particularly after witnessing the brutal murder of her late husband Mike Pepitone.
Was Joseph Mumfre the Axe Man Of New Orleans? That depends on whether or not you take into consideration the 'mob' elements of the crimes committed. New Orleans at the turn of the twentieth century contained a plethora of organized gang activity, mostly associated with Italian immigrants that made up that of the Axe Man's victims.
Were the killings committed by a hired gun of sorts who relished in his work?
Many questions remain unanswered but it does appear that Momfre is the chief suspect in the Axe Man Of New Orleans case. While most do not associate the mafia's criminal element of extortion being involved, it is one to consider. Especially given the era and those affected by the mad man himself.
Back tracking this guy should prove to be a useful tool in our future endeavors with the EARONS.
