This doesnt really fit in with any other story discussed here. For example its not like EARONS where we dont know who did it. Its not a story about the who but the why. Chris Benoit was a professional wrestler who was considered one of the best wrestlers in the world. He wrestled in Japan, ECW, WCW, and finally WWE. He was a favorite of "smart" fans who loved technical wrestlers like him who broke the stereotypcial mold of professional wrestler. He worked and clawed his way to get to the top and in 2004 at Wrestlemania 20 at Madison Square Garden he won the biggest prize in wrestling, the World Heavyweight Championship. He celebrated that catharthic victory that was the seeming culmination of a 20 year journey. He embraced his wife and kids, but most emotional for wrestling fans he embraced his best friend and fellow wrestler Eddie Guerrero who like Benoit was not the traditional Wrestler. At that wrestlemania Eddie successfully defended the WWE title. They embraced and held their titles up, the symbol of the culmination of two long paths. Within three years though, Eddie, Benoit, his wife, and his youngest son Daniel would all be dead.
In 2005 Eddie died due to a heart overgrown from steroids (roids play a role in this whole story. Benoit was shattered as Eddie was his best friend, his shoulder to cry on. At the same time Benoit was in excruciating pain, pain that every wrestler knew too well. Pain from the havoc wrestling wreaks upon your body. Now that was joined by the emotional pain of losing his best friend. But Eddie was the first, many of Benoits friends from the wrestling business were dying and they were dying young. The only way to say it is that they were dropping like flies. Big Boss Man, Sensational Sherri, Miss Elizabeth, Bif Wellington, and others all died in the years from 2000 to 2007. Many of the were Benoits friends and these constant deaths got to him, they made him worry about his own health, and as we will see worrying was something Chris Benoit did almost as well as wrestling. But Eddie dying was the coda, the straw that broke the proverbial camels back. Eddies death changed Benoit. He became lost, he wrote to Eddie in a journal regularly (Ill go into detail about some of these writings and safe to say some of what he wrote is interesting) and kept the last message Eddie ever left him in his voicemail just to hear Eddies voice. Eddies death in this story is usually looked at as the moment when Chris Benoit became a broken man not just physically but emotionally.
At the same time Benoit was a man worried constantly for his safety. The murder of the daughter of a wrestler amongst other things made Benoit paranoid and worried. He was worried someone would do the same to him and his family. And these feelings reached their peak after his win at Wrestlemania 20, as Champion he was in the limelight more than ever before. He moved his family out into a suburban atlanta mansion with high fences. It was out in what could be classed in the middle of nowhere. When he would go to the gym, drive to and from the airport for WWE events he would always go home a different way, paranoid someone was tailing him. These were just some of what he did to feel safe. He was never to anyones knowledge basing this on any real or even pericieved threat as he never stated whom exactly he feared. In general it was a fear of the world, and no doubt the deaths of hus friends played into that, Benoit was losing control and was tryinh desperately to regain even a semblance of it.
Benoit was a patient a Dr. Astin who can only be described as someone who made Zahorian look like a priest. Astin prescribed the pain addled Benoit and other patients with opioids, painkillers, steroids and just about anything else. He would have his patients fast from the drugs so that when they took a test the readings would justify an increased dosage. Astin became Benoits physician in around 2000 and would see him regularly up until his death. Prescribing the steroids needed to get the body of a wrestler, the weight loss pills to get rid of the belly that resulted and of course the painkillers and opioids that numbed the near constant pain Benoit was in. Benoits prescriptions were a nausiating list that makes your skin crawl, though your skin crawls even more when you realize Astin had over 100 patients other then Benoit that he treated in the exact same way. And he had two of whom who died as a result. Astin would finally face justice in 2009 but as of now if I have read the news right Astin may very well be out of prison.
Chris Benoit was married to a fellow wrestler. Nancy Benoit best know by her name in WCW "Woman" was a valet and managed Benoit. She was Benoits second wife and together they had a son (Benoits third child) named Daniel. Nancy retired to raise Daniel while Chris began his tenure in WWE. But they lived a life far from perfect. Domestic strife was common and in 2003 Nancy attempted to file for divorce because Benoit was being abusive. But she changed her mind and stayed. But things only got worse, because she also became addicted to drungs and like Benoit self medicated because she too began to see all of her wrestling friends dying young. The two would clash but make up, one moment they could be screaming and yelling about Chris not seeing Daniel often enough. The next they would be making plans to open a wrestling school. But in the spring of 2007 things were reaching a breaking point. Nancy was getting fed uo with Chris not being home. And he said she "was acting like Hitler". They were two drugged up loose cannons who would go off
On June 24th 2007 Benoit was set to wrestle CM Punk for and to win the ECW Championship at the WWE Pay Per View "Vengeance: Nigjt Of Champions". He did not show up, something Benoit never did. WWE stated he was not there because there was a family emergency. No one knew what that meant, some heard that Nancy and Daniel were coughing up blood. All that was certain was that Benoit was not there. That day Eddies nephew and Benoits friend Chavo Guerrero along with WWE ref Scott Armstrong recieved texts from Benoit, the text of which were Benoits address and the fact that his dogs were left outside with a door open. Chavo had spoken to Benoit that saturday which is where the coughing up blood story came from. Benoit had ended that conversation by telling Chavo "I Love You Chavo". In an interview in 2014 Chavo stated that Benoit sounded "off" during that call...
On that Monday WWE contacted the local Atlanta police. WWE could not reach Benoit and no doubt WWE knew about the texts. The Police went to Benoits home and had a neigbor open the house. When they got there they decribed a "strong smell of decaying bodies". And what they found inside was horrifying. Nancy was tied to chair with wire and had been strangled to death. A copy of the bible was left by her side. Daniel was found dead in his room, he was also strangled and had a childrens bible next to him. And Benoit was in his weight room, he had hung himself from a weight machine, and he had done it in such a way to insure maximum pain as he died. It became apparent what happened...
WWE first told the world the news that Chris Benoit and his wife and son were dead. Many thought it was a fake story as just two weeks before WWE chairman Vince McMahon was "killed off" on an episode of Monday Night Raw. But it wasnt fake, that nights RAW became a tribute to Benoit and McMahon broke character and explained how all of this was real, the Benoit family was dead.
By that time news outlets aired the news that meant WWE was showing a tribute to a killer. The next day McMahon stated that the true facts had come to light and that the "healing process" was starting. With that he also banned Benoits name and image from WWE tv, a ban that has even today never been broken.
Benoit killed Daniel and Nancy, Nancy first on Friday and Daniel the next day and Benoit on that monday (some go as far as saying he hung himself as the Police entered the home, though there is no evidence to support this). During that time we knew he googled things such as "how to bring someone back to life". But even then that means from saturday until monday that Benoit stayed in that house with the bodies, wandering around doing things we may never know, thinking thoughts we will never know.
That was Part 1, Part 2 will focus on the investigation into what Caused Benoit to do it. Discussion is encouraged
