With a crime spree this extensive, it's understandable many things will get overlooked in terms of possible evidence and connections. Last night, I was looking over some of my notes and thought I'd share some interesting tidbits.
Attack 45 occurred on June 2, 1979 in Walnut Creek, California. I covered this crime in part 10 of my twelve part series. There are many interesting details with the post-attack that needs to be addressed and looked at more thoroughly if it hasn't already. (https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/6eqnz3/the_east_area_rapist_part_10/)
When the authorities received a call about the attack on the babysitter and were heading to the crime scene, they saw a 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass weaving in and out of traffic. They quickly pulled the driver over on suspicion of drinking while intoxicated. As they did so, they noticed the male driver matched the numerous descriptions of what The East Area Rapist allegedly looks like.
While the officers were questioning the driver, another patrol officer arrived to the scene with his K-9 dog. The canine began picking up a distinctive odor coming from inside of the vehicle before being alerted to the driver. The police immediately apprehended the suspect and charged him with drunk driving and sexual assault, believing they had finally caught The East Area Rapist.
Shortly thereafter, the driver was released with all charges dropped due to a police conduction error. Due to the canine sniffing the inside of the vehicle first rather than the suspect, the foul smell could have been numerous things which is why the dog reacted strangely.
Even more interesting was an incident that occurred during the questioning of the driver when he was pulled over. A person living in the proximity to where the attack on victim 45 -- the babysitter -- happened, called the police and reported seeing a pantless prowler in the neighborhood. Patrol officers on duty answered the call and quickly arrested the perpetrator.
According to the prowler's testimony, he was employed as a janitor and once his shift ended at 7:00 p.m. he went searching for his missing cat. He mentioned he lived Pleasant Hill, California, which is a ten minute commute to Walnut Creek, California, where the attack on the babysitter occurred. When the authorities searched his vehicle, they discovered numerous photos of women taken by a camera with a zoomed lens. One photo in particular was of a woman who was leaving the car wash (earlier that day?).
After that incident, I haven't been able to find any subsequent information on that individual who was caught pantless. There is seemingly no mention of his name, the vehicle he was driving, or what happened to him after being apprehended.
Nevertheless, things continue to get more peculiar. Sergeant Larry Crompton, author of "Sudden Terror" was working the crime committed on the babysitter (attack 45). However, the authorities -- primarily the Walnut Creek Watch Commander -- refused to cooperate. In his book, Larry details what he was told by the commanding officer, *Sergeant, understand something. We don't want your help, we don't need your help. We don't want you in our city. We don't want your Task Force in our city. We can do our own job. Understand? The East Area Rapist has not been in our town and will never be in our town. If you go to the press, we will deny it. We don't want you in our town.*
The reason I bring this particular topic up is due to the subsequent attack in Danville, California on June 11, 1979 -- nine days after the event in Walnut Creek, California. I won't be discussing attack 46 per-se, but if you are interested, part 11 is where I discuss the attack in length (https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/6fxxny/the_east_area_rapist_part_11_becoming_the/).
Hours prior to the assault on June 11, 1979, a woman living in the vicinity went to check on a vacant home that was located on the street northwest of where the victim was later attacked. She discovered a car wash ticket in the driveway, which was not there the day before. According to the description detailed in Richard Shelby's book, "Hunting a Psychopath," the size of the ticket was 2 x 3/4 by 2 x 3/4. Moreover, "Car Wash 6/9/79" was found printed on it.
The question now arises: Is there a connection? From Danville, California to Walnut Creek, California, it's a ten minute commute. The pantless prowler who had photographs of women stashed in his vehicle had a picture of a woman leaving the car wash. Granted, it could all be a coincidence, but it's certainly worth noting. Furthermore, the sole fact of law enforcement in Walnut Creek refusing to cooperate with Larry Crompton is quite astonishing.
As I said earlier, I haven't been able to find any information pertaining to the aftermath on the arrest of the pantless prowler. Going on the assumption the individual was later released, could he have actually been The East Area Rapist? From my perspective, I find it very suspicious that this person was pantless when apprehended and it just so happened to be near the attack on victim 45 (the babysitter).
Additionally, the press conference (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdk9V0QSSj4) held in 2016 gave mention that law enforcement is withholding two pieces of information related to The East Area Rapists' modus operandi. While we don't know precisely what evidence they have, could it possibly be that The East Area Rapist photographed his soon-to-be victims (or random women in general) during his stalking process?
Not only that, but hours later after discovering the car wash ticket, victim 46 was attacked. Interestingly, this attack was connected to the Original Night Stalker by DNA evidence.
What are your thoughts on the matter?
