In this post, I am going to discuss the change of locations for the East Area Rapist. Before I start, I'd like to throw out a disclaimer: I'm not saying this or that is authentic. This narrative is solely designed for speculation.
When it comes to the East Area Rapist and studying the location(s) of where he targeted his victims, oftentimes the main source of confusion stems toward him relocating from Northern California to Southern California from July 5, 1979 to October 1, 1979. A common answer for this purpose is due to the thwarted attack against a couple residing in Danville, California, primarily because of how close the notorious rapist was to being apprehended and identified. However, it's worth mentioning that regardless of the circumstances to his sudden departure, this three-month interval during the summer was a commonality for the East Area Rapist during his reign of terror.
Nevertheless, the botched attack could be a motivating factor for transitioning to Southern California, but ultimately nobody knows for certain. The possibilities are endless, along with the speculation. Was this change of scenery brought on by schooling? Perhaps a new job that required reliable transportation was the basis.
Moreover, an interesting connection that seemingly gets overlooked is the possibility that moving and or attacking in Goleta, California was planned for a while and not completely spontaneous and entirely improvised. One year prior to the unfortunate murders of Dr. Offerman and Dr. Manning, a prowler was reported in the vicinity twice in one year. Each incident occurred in Santa Barbara on Vineyard Road, and details this stranger(s) as approximately 6'0 tall and wearing all dark clothing with a stocking cap. Both separate accounts pinpoint this happening between 2:00 - 2:30 in the morning. Whenever the stranger was spotted, he would turn around and scale the fence.
Of course, those two dubious events could be unrelated to the East Area Rapist. Nevertheless, we do know he didn't mind traveling a lengthy distance to stalk and commit burglaries and rapes, and he did ultimately transition from NorCal to SoCal, so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility for it to be the offender.
Unfortunately, nobody knows definitively. There is zero evidence to suggest the most reasonable answer. However, there is another relocation that doesn't gets spoken of regularly, and that is the change of location from Visalia, California to the emergence of the East Area Rapist in the summer of 1976 in Rancho Cordova, California, which is roughly a three-hour commute.
To be completely fair, we cannot say for certain the Visalia Ransacker and East Area Rapist are the same person, though there is a lot of circumstantial and coincidental evidence that points to them being the same individual. For this post in particular, I'd like to suggest they are one in the same.
If they are the same person, the question has to be asked: Why did he move from Visalia to Sacramento County? Much of the evidence for the East Area Rapist suggest him being a generally young offender, possibly in his late teens or very early twenties. If we assume he was a teenager in high school at the beginning as some speculate, and if he is the Visalia Ransacker, that would make him a juvenile; young enough to not be living on his own, thus moving locations not by his own volition.
Therefore, was he living with relatives -- parents or other family members? If so, what caused them to relocate? Moreover, an interesting question would be - After moving from Visalia, depending on the timeline (after December 10, 1975), did the ransacking in Visalia come to a complete halt? The evidence says so. Thus, six months later, a new string of crimes began to rise in Sacramento County in many clusters. Perhaps the family moved because they felt Visalia was an unsafe location. Furthermore, if the crimes were suppressed and practically non-existent after moving, then suddenly a new wave of similar crimes emerge in NorCal in the specific timeframe of events, could their son or family member have been the Visalia Ransacker and East Area Rapist?
I'm curious to know if law enforcement has cross-referenced teenagers and families moving from Visalia or other locations nearby to schools in Sacramento County, such as Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, Citrus Heights, and other locations in the general area where the East Area Rapist started attacking. Were there any lists compiled of new enrollment students specifically in 1976 and 1977? Surely there were names of students on a list tied specifically to each classroom. Cross-checking those names to databases in the Visalia area seems paramount.
There are two other things I noticed regarding the Visalia Ransacker which I find somewhat intriguing. Whether or not it has any valuable meaning, I can't make that assessment. Nonetheless, here is what I noticed:
1) The Visalia Ransacker never attacked on a Tuesday.
2) There is a similar timeline connection between VR and EAR. In 1974, Visalia Ransacker attacked on 6/23/1974. He then disappeared for a few months until reappearing on 9/14/1974. Similar to the East Area Rapist when he would go dormant sometime(s) during the summer months and reemerge once again in September or October. A good example for the East Area Rapist partaking in this similarity is during 1977, when on May 28, 1977 in Sacramento, California and disappeared until September 6, 1977 in Stockton, California.
Mainly, the premise of this post is focused on the age and relocation of the offender (assuming the Visalia Ransacker and East Area Rapist are the same person). If we consider the offender to be relatively young who was living with family, that poses the question: If anyone was living in the area of the time these ransackings were occurring, and were approximately the same hypothetical age as the offender (teenager), do you recall any of your friends moving locations sometime after the last attack on December 10, 1975, but before the East Area Rapist started striking? Did you know anyone, maybe in passing from school, such as a classmate that you didn't speak to often, or did you have a friend-of-a-friend, fitting this scenario?
One issue that could possibly dismantle or substantiate this theory would be the East Area Rapists' first attack on June 18, 1976 in Rancho Cordova, California. Moving is a strenuous job that takes valuable time and preparation. If the Visalia Ransacker is the East Area Rapist, I'm wondering when school in the Visalia area released students for summer vacation in 1976.
The East Area Rapists' first victim claimed she felt she had been stalked for a month prior to the attack. Granted, some families are lenient when it comes to the end of a school year since the last week -- especially for young people -- doesn't have homework involved. Plus, if a family is moving towns, they typically visit the location multiple times prior to making the big change in order to get a general feel of the area and ask themselves if this is the decision they truly want to make. This could provide a moment where the East Area Rapist could develop a certain interest and attachment to a woman (his first victim) and suddenly grow a deeper fascination by the time he and his family made the jump. That could imply he lived rather close to the victim, especially considering she didn't recognize the vehicle that continued to relentlessly prowl the area. Her only description was the vehicle being green and was an older, medium sized American made automobile.
In closing, these are just a few miscellaneous thoughts. I know there is much debate as to the Visalia Ransacker and East Area Rapist being the same person. There are many inconsistent reports as to the age of each particular offender, along with their weight. My post isn't suggesting my information is completely factual; I'm only providing a possible scenario for cross-referencing purposes that I believe is worth pursuing.
